Paul, the Heavenly Citizen (Acts 22:24-30)

Scripture: “ 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him. 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, 'Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?' 26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, 'Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.' 27 Then the commander came and said to him, 'Tell me, are you a Roman?' He said, 'Yes.' 28 The commander answered, 'With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.' And Paul said, 'But I was born a citizen.' 29 Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him. 30 The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them. ”

Deacon Min went back to China again and her father is very ill so his prognosis is that he can only live for about a month. With her husband, she returned back to China. Please keep them in your prayers. What I am thankful for is that before he didn’t know about Christ but before he returned back to China, he accepted Christ and started his walk of faith. What is absolute is that he told me that he was a child of God and he has assurance that he is saved. Also, Deacon Min had no worries when she returned back to China because she knew that her father is now a child of God and is saved. Before he passes away, I am very curious what his last words will be. What is very important is what you will say before you pass away. I think what sums up the conclusion of your life is what you say before you die. Before Karl Marx passed away, he was asked what his last words was and it was recorded by his maid, but his last words were, “Go on. Get out!” That was how he died. Karl Marx who caused such an uproar in this world with his ideology of communism but his last words were, “Go on. Get out!” You may be able to deceive many people in this world but what you say before you die, it is your true self. Also, Napoleon’s last words were, “I lived a very anxious life. France. The Army. Josephine.” This great Napoleon who may be seen as almighty before many people’s eyes and who conquered so much in his life, those were his last words and died a pitiful death. Also, the famous musician, Beethoven, before he passed away, he applauded and said, “Applaud, my friends. The comedy is over.” Beethoven thought his life was a joke and comedy, and he died in emptiness. Before the famous author, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe died, he said, “Save me. More Light!” Before he died, he asked the maid if she could open the window because it was so dark for him. The world famous author, that was his last words. He was so famous in this world, extremely wealthy, and successful but when he died, he died a very pitiful death. When thinking about success, what is true success? Before Pastor Charles Spurgeon died, he said, “The Lord has died for me. It is finished.” These are such beautiful words. Such a beautiful ending to a person’s life. What did Jesus say before He died? He confessed that it was finished. All of the problems of mankind, Jesus Christ finished all of them before He died on the cross. He is giving us the message of hope that the problems are no more and that He finished all of that on the cross. Because of Jesus’ ministry on the cross, we are able to live with hope. Last week we discussed regarding the message of Apostle Paul giving the message to the Jews. He had such a passionate heart for saving and sharing the gospel to the Jews but the last message that he gave was that God had given him the message to save the Gentiles and when the Jews heard this, they were angry. They were angry because the Jews thought they were the only chosen people of God not the Gentiles.
1. Romans Citizen
1) The commander's order to bind Paul:
Verse 24 - The commander of the army couldn’t see anymore of this and knew that the crowd will try to kill Paul so he withdrew Paul away. So many people were coming after Paul to try to kill him and the commander realized that Paul was a criminal that needed to be stopped so the commander took him and captured him into prison to find out what he did wrong. What our remnants need to hold onto from here is that when we live our lives, there are people who don’t research or listen to explanations but gather their own judgment and thoughts first. There are people who think that they are right and smart so they make decisions without listening to people first. This was what the commander did wrong. You have to understand how rash thinking can cause problems in the future. For our remnants, whatever work or circumstances that you are in, don’t make rash or hasty decisions but think about it carefully first. When I look at my life, whenever I made any hasty or rash decisions, I realized that those decisions have caused trouble and more problems in my life. In order to be successful, we have to be careful in decision making. Those who are hasty, they will absolutely fail and this is the frame that we must break out of. When the commander made this rash decision, Paul did not stand still and proclaimed that he was a Roman citizen.
2) The status of a citizen:
Verses 25, 27, 29 - When the soldiers heard that Paul was a Roman citizen, they ran to the commander and told him. The commander came running to confirm if Paul was a Roman citizen. The commander confessed that he paid a lot for his Roman citizenship and asked Paul how he obtained his citizenship but at that moment, Paul proclaimed that he was born a Roman citizen. The fact that he was born a Roman citizen, you were considered to be in a different social class and standing than everyone else. When the commander heard this, he became afraid as seen in today’s scriptures. The fact that he was binding a Roman citizen, this cause him to be in great trouble. This is an important message here. Paul didn’t do anything but all he did was reveal that he was a Roman citizen. But once this fact was revealed, the commander became afraid. This means that this is the status of our citizenship as children of God. The moment we are aware of our citizen as a children of God, Satan has no choice but to flee and be afraid.
Not long ago, we visited a meeting in Harry Hines of the Jeung San Do, a religious movement founded. We went out to evangelize into that field but the representative came forward and we talked to him, and we told him that we were from a church. This person was an elite and he graduated from a prestigious university but the moment he saw us, he was taken aback and told us to take a seat. He made us sit down but didn’t come out to see us for at least 30 minutes. I was wondering what he were doing for he was taking a long time but when I saw him in his office, he was trembling in fear. I asked him to come out and talk to us but he kept on trembling and shaking. When I saw him like that, I felt so sorry for him. This was the same image of a shaman shaking in fear when we visit them. When we would visit shamans, they would yell at us and command us for to leave and get out. This was the same image of the man in the Jeung San Do meeting that we visited. When we accept Christ, the Spirit of God enters into us and Satan has no choice but to tremble in fear. We don’t have to say anything but Satan is trembling in fear at just our presence. But if you go into a shaman’s house, the shaman is more fearful of you than you are of her. We have this tremendous identity and power as children of God.
3) The authority of a citizen:
The commander of the Roman army became afraid of Paul. This is because we have authority as a children of God. Verse 25 - Paul completely changed the entire atmosphere when he revealed that he was a Roman citizen. This was because Roman citizens had great authority back in the day. If you bind a Roman citizen or take them to jail without a proper court case, then that is considered extremely unlawful and leads into severe punishment. This was a severe case for the commander because he bound and punished a Roman citizen without a proper court case. Why was this? This was because Paul was a Roman citizen. This shows the great advantages and power that Roman citizens possessed.
If you look in the Bible, if you look his Roman citizenship in a spiritual sense, Roman citizenship is nothing compared to the citizenship that we have as a child of God. Let us look at the great power that we have as children of God. John 1:12 (“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”) - We have the power to become children of God. We are children of God so who would dare to come against you? We have been given this tremendous power and authority.
Ephesians 1:3 ("Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.") - This was given to us. The moment we accepted Jesus Christ, all of the power of God has been given to us.
Luke 10:19 (“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”) - Who gave this authority? God gave us this authority. God, the Creator gave it to us. Then, that means that everything is finished. If we just stand still, then everything is given to us. Especially within this 40-day prayer challenge, we need to enjoy this authority and power that we have as children of God. If this message is true, then isn’t it rightful for us to enjoy it? Wouldn’t it be pitiful if we have this power and authority but we don’t know how to enjoy and utilize it? Truly enjoy it in the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ proclaimed that it is all finished.
2. Paul's Suffering
1) Punishment with the whip:
There is something that we must hold onto here, we have to see that Paul was suffering. It said in today’s scriptures that Paul was being scourged, whipped. For Romans, the subjective nations were seen as low as animals. When a Roman citizen punishes a non-Roman citizen, they would punish them with a leather and sharp whips. They would use these whips for basically animals so this was considered a whip for low-class people and animals. But they were using this whip to punish Paul. But Jesus Christ was also whipped. This means that he was treated the same way as an animal would be treated. They were punishing him with the heart that he was nothing more than an animal and they didn’t care for his existence. Then, what about Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ was seen as the most cursed. Why did Jesus have to die this way? He had to die in the most pitiful and cursed way possible. This was because He died for our behalf, we who was seen as the most cursed before God.
Isaiah 53:5 ("But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.") - When Jesus Christ suffered on the cross, He suffered and died for our behalf. Because He suffered and died for us, we didn’t have to go through that in our lives. Because of Christ, we were able to experience freedom in our lives. That is why we call Him, the True Prophet. Through Him, we gained new life back to God.
Isaiah 53: 6 ("All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.") - All of the curses of mankind, God put all of that on Jesus Christ when He died on the cross. He took all of the curses of mankind and bore all of that, and died on the cross. That is why our problems are solved. Isn’t this so amazing? When we pray, that is why we need to give thanksgiving.
Hebrews 2:14 ("Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.") - Jesus Christ who was sinless, He took on the flesh and bore all of our sins, and died on the cross. He went through all of that so He can overcome the power of death and Satan for us. We who were bound by Satan, Jesus Christ died on the cross and broke down the power of Satan completely. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, Satan thought he had won. It was not Christ who died but it was Satan who was completely broken down and perished through the death of Christ. Because Jesus Christ fulfilled the role of Christ on the cross, we are now alive. Jesus Christ solved all of our sins and problems, and He confessed that He finished everything then all we have to do is enjoy this. Then, there is something that we must check and examine. Wherever Paul went, he went through suffering but why did he have to suffer?
2) The reason for Paul's suffering:
2 Corinthians 11:24-26, 28 ("From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.") - If we see what Paul went through, he went through every kind of suffering possible but why did he had to go through all of these sufferings? It was not like he was Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ proclaimed that it was all finished but why did Paul have to go through all of the sufferings? I won’t go through every reason why but I will give you three reasons.
When Paul was stoned, he was stoned in the region of Lystra but after he was stoned, he returned back to that region. He did’t try to escape but went straight back to the region. He did this because he saw the lives of the disciples more important than his own life. And, within the region of Lystra, the important disciple, Timothy was found. His entire life was focused on making and establishing disciples. Then, it was said that he was beaten by the rods. He went into a certain region and saw a person being demon possessed so he healed that person but people arrested him and beat with a rod for healing that demon possessed girl. It says that he was beaten many times and they didn’t care if they killed him so they beat him endlessly. He was beaten so much that his skin was falling off his body. Why would he go through all of these sufferings? He could’ve confessed that he was a Roman citizen during those times but he didn’t. He saw God’s absolute plan first before his own. Through this, he was able to save the church of Philippi. Through all of his sufferings, he was able to revive and save churches. Another incident was a shipwreck that he experienced. In the midst of that problem, everyone on that ship was saved through Paul because of that storm. Those people were saved and those within that region where the ship landed were saved. His main problem was not his sufferings but what caused his heartache the most were the state of the churches. What was more important than his own life was the lives of people around him. He exhibited the image of an true evangelist. When I read this, I felt so embarrassed and asked God for repentance. How could we possess the same faith as Paul? We should really repent before God. May we hold onto the covenant and be victorious.
3. From the Old Frame to the New Frame
1) The blessing for the evangelist:
We have received the message of the 237 center and as we saw in the RUTC (Remnant Unity Training Center) news as well, we need to hold onto this as our prayer topic and break out of our old frames. When we break out of our old frames, then we can change our fate. I believe this is true. When Paul broke out of his old frame, his fate changed completely. Only when you break out of your old frame, then can your life completely change. If you are not able to break out of the old frame, everything within your life, your finances, family, and problems will never change and be solved. The Bible and Jesus Christ continuously gave us the message that we need to break out of our old frames.
That is why Jesus Christ asked in Matthew 16:13 ("When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, 'Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?' ") - What was the point of this question? Jesus Christ was saying to break out of our old frame and truly enjoy the true Christ. Matthew 17:8 ("When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.") - This was when Moses and Elijah appeared before the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration but in the end, only Jesus remained. This is showing us that we must hold onto only Christ.
Matthew 18:1,4 ("At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, 'Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' 2 Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, 3 and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.' ") - The people of this world, who is seen as the greatest? People see those with the most amount of money and wealth but in heaven, that is not the case. The president is not at the highest place in heaven but those who have humbled themselves to the lowest place are those who will stand at the highest place in heaven. Because you are stuck in the frame that you need to be the greatest and in best place in this world, then you cannot stand in the best place with God. Who does God bless? God blesses those who break out of this frame.
We can see that Deacon Philip went into the region of Samaria that no Jew wanted to go into as seen in Acts 8:5 ("Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.") - This was possible because Deacon Philip broke out of the old frame. God blessed Deacon Philip and allowed him one of the greatest blessing of meetings with an Ethiopian Eunuch. Truly be blessed in the name of Jesus Christ. Then, how can we break out of our old frames?
2) How to break the old frame:
What must we break first? We need to break the darkness working within our lives first. We are doing the second part of the 40-day prayer challenge, we need to break the darkness working within ourselves and our family. Then, we are able to break out of our old frames. When you realize what your old frames are, then you can come out of them. To do that, what must we do? Enter into Galatians 2:20 (“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”) - Discard yourself and entrust yourself to God. Enter into deep prayer. Think about this. What are your old frames? What are the fate, frames, and destiny that are holding onto you. Pray about this and ask God what this may be.
I am going to give you a homework assignment. There are old frames that we all possess but think about them and send me via kakaotalk chatroom what they are to me personally. I won’t expose this to anyone else. Also, think about what the old frames that we must break down within our church and send them to me as well. Let us break out of the old frames together. May this become our covenant and the covenant of our church.
<Conclusion>
Hold onto Isaiah 49:16 ("See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.") - We possess this tremendous power and authority as children of God. This shows us who we are. God said that He has inscribed us within the palms of His hand. We are not saying that He simply wrote on His hand but He inscribed onto His hands. This means when you inscribe something onto a stone, He did the same thing to your name onto His hand. This means that your name will stay with Him eternally. It doesn’t matter what mistake you have made or if have fallen in the past because your name is still written in God. You are a child of God forever. Your walls are before Him, before God. This means that God will protect you for the rest of your life and until you die and meet God in heaven. May you go out boldly. May you receive answers in the name of Jesus Christ.
천국 시민권자 바울(행22:24-30)
서론
이민 집사님이 다시 중국으로 갔다. 아버님이 지금 아주 위독하셔서 한 달도 넘기지 못하겠나 하는 얘기를 듣고 얼른 다시 출발했다. 남편하고 다 같이 갔다. 그를 위해서 기도해주시기 바란다. 감사한 것은 그 분이 예수님을 전혀 모르시다가 여기 오셔서 예수님을 영접하고 하나님의 자녀가 되서 신앙생활을 조금 하시다 가셨다. 분명하게 자신은 하나님의 자녀가 확실하다고 하는 얘기를 몇 번이나 들었다. 집사님도 우선 아버지가 하나님의 자녀가 되셨기 때문에 큰 걱정은 안하시면서 갔다. 돌아가시면서 최후에 무슨 말씀을 하실지 궁금하다.
우리 인생에서 가장 중요한건 내가 마지막 숨을 거둘 때 무슨 말을 하느냐가 중요하다. 그 마지막 한마디가 여태껏 살았던 모든 결론의 한마디이다. 1883년에 돌아가신 칼 막스의 곁의 시녀가 그분이 돌아가시기 전에 기록해야할 말이 있는지 물어보았다. 그는 마지막 말은 남기지 않고, 시끄러우니까 나가있으라 말했다. 그리고 돌아가셨다. 이 땅에 유토피아를 건설하겠다고 하면서 공산주의를 일으켜 수 많은 사람을 죽음으로 몰고갔던 칼 막스는 죽을 때 “시끄러!” 하면서 죽었다. 세상에서는 나름 성공했는지 몰라도 죽음은 달랐다. 나폴레옹은 죽으면서 나는 불행하게 살았다 하고 중얼거리면서 초라하게 죽었다. 세계적인 영웅인 전 유럽을 점령한 나폴레옹이 죽을 때는 불행하게 죽었다. 유명한 음악가 베토벤은 “친구여 박수를! 모든 희극은 끝났다” 하면서 죽었다. 인생을 희극으로 생각하고 이제는 희극이 모두 끝났다 하면서 허무함 속에서 죽었다. 괴테의 파우스트는 살려주세요 하고 비명을 지르며 죽었다. 그 작품을 쓴 괴테 자신은 “창문을 열어주세요, 빛을 주세요” 하면서 죽었다. 세계적인 문학가도 죽을 때는 비참하게 죽었다. 이 사람들이 추구했던 세상적인 성공이 무엇이었는가.
스펄전 목사님이 돌아가실 때는 주님이 나를 위해 돌아가셨다 하면서 돌아가셨다. 참 아름다운 소리 같다. 예수님은 뭐라고 하셨는가. 다 이루었다 하시고 돌아가셨다. 인간이 도저히 해결할 수 없는 모든 문제를 다 이루었다 하시면서 숨을 거두셨다. 모든 문제가 완전히 해결되었으니까 너희는 이제 살았다 하는 희망의 메세지를 주시면서 돌아가셨다. 주님의 십자가 사역 때문에 우리가 소망을 갖고 살아가고있다.
1. 로마 시민권
1) 천부장의 결박명령
지난 시간에 사도바울이 말씀을 증언하는 것을 보았다. 정말 유대인을 살리기 위해 간절한 마음으로 복음을 뜨겁게 증거했다. 그런데 마지막 하나님께서 나를 이방인의 사도로 세우셨느니라 하는 얘기를 하자마자 유대인들이 격분을 하고 일어나 저 놈을 죽여라 했다. 우리만 하나님의 백성이지 어떻게 이방인이 하나님의 백성이 될 수 있냐 하면서 난리를 일으켰다. 소동이 일어난 것을 보고 천부장이 사태를 수습하기 위해서 사도바울을 붙들으라 했다. 사도바울이 히브리 말로 해서 알아듣지는 못했지만 뭔가 큰 범죄를 한 것 같이 보이는 것이다. 수 많은 사람들이 죽여라 하면서 폭동을 일으키니까 보통 범죄자가 아니구나 한 것이다. 천부장이 잡아서 채찍질해서 왜 그랬는지를 밝혀라 하고 명령을 했다. 우리 렘넌트들은 여기서 한 가지 잘 잡아야할 것이 있다. 우리가 살아가는데 있어서 많은 사람들이 자세히 조사하지도 않고 자기 선입견을 갖고 사람을 정죄할 때가 있다. 스스로 똑똑하다고 생각하는 사람들일 수록 자기가 미리 판단해서 조사해보지도 않고 결정을 한다. 이 천부장이 바로 그런 행동을 한 것이다. 이 성급한 결정이 얼마나 잘못되었는지를 우리가 알 수 있다. 우리 렘넌트들이 앞으로 성공하기 위해서는 어떤 일이 있다고 하더라도 내 선입견, 기분에 따라 판단하지 않고 자세히 상황을 조사하고 결정하기 바란다. 저는 여태까지 살아오면서 상황을 묻지 않고 성급하게 결정하는 것은 큰 문제를 일으킨 것을 많이 보았다. 리더가 되기 위해서는 좌우 사정을 잘 조사하는 것이 중요하다. 조급하게 결정하는 것은 실패의 틀이다. 그 틀에서 벗어나야한다.
2) 시민권자의 신분
이 천부장이 결박하는 것을 보고 사도바울이 내가 로마 시민권자다 하고 밝힌다. 그 소리를 들은 백부장이 깜짝 놀라서 이 사람이 시민권자입니다 하고 보고를 한다. 천부장이 깜짝 놀라 쫓아와서 당신이 로마 시민권자가 맞느냐 하고 묻는다. 어떤면에서 이해가 안되는 것이다. 수많은 유대인들이 죽이려고 하는 연약한 사도바울이 자신이 시민권자라 하게 되니까 의외인 것이다. 천부장이 나는 많은 돈을 주고 시민권을 샀는데 너는 어떻게 얻었느냐 한다. 사도바울이 나는 나면서부터 있었다 한다. 나면서 부터 있었다는 것은 한 단계 위라는 말이다. 그 이야기를 듣고 난 후에 29절 말씀에 그 결박한 것 때문에 두려워했다고 나온다. 시민권자를 묶었기 때문이다. 사도바울은 아무것도 안하고 나는 로마 시민권자다 하는 것을 밝혔을 뿐이다. 그런데 그 사실만 듣고 천부장은 두려움에 떨었다. 이것은 무엇을 의미하는가. 우리가 하나님의 자녀된 신분이 그렇다는 사실이다. 우리가 하나님의 자녀된 신분만 밝혀도 흑암은 떤다. 우리 하나님 자녀된 신분은 어마어마하다는 사실을 잡아야한다. 영적세계에 있어서는 분명히 우리가 하나님 자녀된 신분을 밝히게 되면 떨게된다는 것이다. 얼마전에 달라스 헤리하인즈 쪽에 증산도가 모이는 곳을 찾아갔다. 그 전도현장에 찾아가서 문을 두드렸다. 거기 있는 대표가 나왔다. 교회에서 얘기 좀 하러 왔습니다 하고 들어갔다. 그 사람은 엘리트였다. 서강대학교 동문과를 졸업한 엘리트였다. 그런데 그 사람이 우리를 보자마자 당황을 하더니 잠깐 앉으세요 하고는 가서 20-30분이 되도록 안나왔다. 기다리다가 안되서 가서 들여다보니 얼굴을 보니까 두려움에 떨고 있는 것이다. 잠깐 나오시라고 하니까 벌벌벌 떨며 나오는 것이다. 이 사람이 참 심각하구나 하는 마음이 들었다. 한국에서 무당집에 갔을 때 무당들이 우리를 보고 떠는 똑같은 모습을 봤기 때문이다. 못들어온다고 나가라면서 문을 쾅쾅 닫고 하는 것을 본 적이 있으니까 이 사람이 똑같은 상태구나 알 수 있었다. 우리가 하나님의 자녀가 되서 예수 그리스도를 영접하는 그 순간에 그리스도의 영이 들어온 순간에는 흑암이 벌벌벌 떨게된다. 아무소리 안해도 그냥 떨게 되어있다. 정말 누리시기 바란다. 우리는 보통 존재가 아니다. 이 사도바울을 보고 천부장이 두려워했던 것 정도가 아니다. 왜냐하면 우리에게는 권세가 있기 때문이다.
3) 시민권자의 권세
행 22:25 가죽 줄로 바울을 매니 바울이 곁에 서 있는 백부장더러 이르되 너희가 로마 시민 된 자를 죄도 정하지 아니하고 채찍질할 수 있느냐 하니
이 한 마디에 모든 것이 변화된 것이다. 왜냐하면 시민권자 된 자의 권세가 있기 때문이다. 만일 정당한 재판 없이 중범죄로 확정이 되지 않았는데도 결박을 시켜버렸다면 결박한 자는 엄중한 처벌을 받게된다. 오늘 29절 말씀에도 결박한 것 때문에 두려워했다고 나온다. 시민권자를 결박을 했다는 것은 있을 수 없는 일인 것이다. 왜 그런가. 이 시민권자는 소속이 로마 황제 소속이기 때문이다. 당시 로마 시민권자라는 것은 어마어마한 세력을 갖고있었다. 그런데 성경을 보게되면 로마 시민권자의 권세라는 것은 영적으로 본다면 천국 시민권자의 모형에 지나지 않는다. 이것을 보면서 우리가 잡아야할 것은 우리가 받은 권세가 얼마나 큰가 하는 사실이다.
요1:12 영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니
하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세이다. 여러분 우리가 하나님의 자녀인데 누가 우리를 함부로 할 수 있겠는가. 이미 우리에게는 어마어마한 권세가 주어지고 시작하는 것이다.
엡1:3찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주시되
현재 완료형으로 되어있다. 이미 예수 그리스도를 영접하는 순간에 아버지께서 가지신 모든 신령한 복이 주어졌다는 것이다.
눅10:19 내가 너희에게 뱀과 전갈을 밟으며 원수의 모든 능력을 제어할 권능을 주었으니 너희를 해칠 자가 결코 없으리라
누가 주었다고 얘기하고 있는가. 내가 라고 얘기한다. 주님께서 우리에게 주신 것이다. 그렇다면 끝난 것이다. 우리가 가만히 있어도 나타나게 되어있는 것이다. 우리 40일 기도하는 동안에 이 신분 권세를 누리면서 기도하시라. 주님께서 약속하신 말씀이 나의 것이 되도록 기도하는 것이 당연한 것 아닌가. 이미 우리는 하나님의 자녀로 모든 것을 받았다. 아무것도 받지 못한 것처럼 기도하는 것은 비참한 것이다. 정말 누리시기 바란다. 주님께서 완전히 다 이루셨다. 여기서 우리가 한 가지 잡아야할 것이 있다. 사도바울이 지금 고난을 당하고 있다.
2. 바울의 고난
1) 채찍의 형벌
행 22:24 천부장이 바울을 영내로 데려가라 명하고 그들이 무슨 일로 그에 대하여 떠드는지 알고자 하여 채찍질하며 심문하라 한대
사도바울을 보자마자 채찍질을 하고 심문하라고 한 것은 로마 사람들이 속국된 백성을 어느정도로 하찮게 보느냐 하는 것을 나타낸다. 속국된 백성들은 로마인이 보기에는 노예나 짐승 수준인 것이다. 그 사람들을 심문할 때는 로마사람들에게 쓰지 않는 가죽 채찍을 쓴다. 가죽 끝에가 쇠덩어리든지 뼈를 넣어서 치는 것이다. 그것은 원래 사람에게 쓰는게 아니라 야생마 같은 것들을 길들일 때 쓰는 것이다. 말이 펄펄 뛸 때 한 번 쓰게 되면 꼼짝 못하고 떨어져 나가게 하는 것이 가죽 채찍이었다. 그런데 이것으로 때리라는 것이다. 예수님께서 이 채찍에 맞으셨다. 예수님께서 가죽 채찍에 맞았다는 것은 짐승 대접을 당했다는 것이다. 너같은 자는 맞아서 죽어도 된다 하는 뜻이다. 가장 저주받은 자에게 주는 형벌이었다. 왜 그런가. 예수님께서 돌아가신 것이 가장 저주받은 자의 모습으로 돌아갔기 때문이다. 우리 인간이 받은 저주를 대체하기 위해서 저주받은 모습으로 돌아가신 것이다.
사53:5 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다
예수님께서 저주받은 모습은 예수님 자신의 저주가 아니라 우리가 받을 저주였다. 우리가 받을 저주와 고통, 고난을 주님께서 모두 받으셨기 때문에 우리가 나음을 받았다. 그럼으로 우리가 자유함과 평안을 얻었다. 그래서 우리는 그 분을 보고 참 선지자라고 얘기한다. 하나님께 온전한 몸으로 나아갈 수 있게 하기위해 형벌을 받으셨다.
사53: 6 우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다
우리가 받은 모든 죄악을 하나님께서 예수님께 다 담당시키셨다. 중범죄자로서 저주받은 몸으로서 죽으시는 것이다. 인간의 모든 죄를 짊어지시고 죽으시는 것이다. 그래서 우리 문제가 해결된 것이다. 얼마나 기가막힌 사건인가. 우리는 기도하면서 정말 감사가 나와야한다.
히 2:14 자녀들은 혈과 육에 속하였으매 그도 또한 같은 모양으로 혈과 육을 함께 지니심은 죽음을 통하여 죽음의 세력을 잡은 자 곧 마귀를 멸하시며
아무 죄도 없으신 하나님의 아들께서 육신을 입고 이 땅에 오신 것은 우리를 위해서 죽으시기 위함이라는 것이다. 죽음을 통해서만이 죽음의 세력을 잡은 마귀를 멸할 수 있기 때문이다. 사단의 노예, 마귀의 종노를 하는 우리를 건져내시기 위해서 오셔서 십자가에 못박혀 죽으셨다. 사단은 예수님을 십자가에서 죽였다고 했지만 알고보니까 자기가 죽는 일이었다. 그래서 우리는 예수님은 참 왕이십니다 하고 찬양을 드린다. 주님께서 그리스도의 직분을 행하셨기 때문에 우리가 살고있는 것이다. 우리가 한 번 점검해야겠다. 에수님께서 십자가에서 못박혀 돌아가시고 우리 모든 문제를 완전히 해결하셨다. 그리고 다 이루셨다고 하셨다. 모든 것이 실질적으로 다 이루어졌다. 이제 누리기만하면 된다. 그런데 성경을 보면 한 가지 체크를 해야될 것이 있다. 사도바울을 보면 계속 고난을 당한다. 왜 사도바울은 고난을 당하고 있는가.
2) 바울이 고난받은 이유
사도바울이 직접 기록했다.
고후11:24-26 유대인들에게 사십에서 하나 감한 매를 다섯 번 맞았으며 세 번 태장으로 맞고 한 번 돌로 맞고 세 번 파선하고 일 주야를 깊은 바다에서 지냈으며 여러 번 여행하면서 강의 위험과 강도의 위험과 동족의 위험과 이방인의 위험과 시내의 위험과 광야의 위험과 바다의 위험과 거짓 형제 중의 위험을 당하고
이 바울이 당한 것을 보게되면 인간이 이 땅에서 받을 수 있는 고난이란 고난은 다 받았다. 왜 이렇게 고난을 당하는가. 예수님은 우리를 위해서 고난을 받으셨지만 사도바울은 그럴이유가 없었다. 여기에 중요한 이유가 있다. 세가지만 말씀드리겠다. 돌에 맞았다는 얘기가 나온다. 이것은 2차 전도여행 때 루스드라에서 돌에맞아 거의 죽은 상태로 버려졌다. 아침에 일어나서 다시 성으로 들어갔다. 그러게 돌에 맞고도 도망가지 않고 다시 성으로 들어간 것이다. 자기의 죽음보다도 더 귀중한 디모데가 있었기 때문이다. 바울이 당한 고난은 절대제자를 찾기위해서 당한 고난이었다. 세 번 태장을 맞았다고 나온다. 그 중에 한 번은 빌립보에 가서 귀신들린 여종을 귀신에게서 벗어나도록 해주었을 때다. 그 사건 때문에 고발되어 붙잡혀서 태장을 죽도록 맞았다. 많이 쳤다고 나온다. 유대인들은 40대 이상 때리면 죽을지도 모르니까 39번만 때려라 하는 규정이 있다. 그런데 로마 사람들은 그런게 없다. 숫자도 세지 않고 죽을때까지 때리는 것이다. 원어를 보게되면 살이 다 터져 피가나는 상태에서 감옥소에서 찬양을 했다고 나온다. 왜 당하는가. 시민권을 내놓았다면 당하지 않았을 것이다. 자기 육신을 생각하는 것 보다도 하나님의 계획을 먼저 봤던 것이다. 그 결과로 감옥소의 간수과 가족이 구원받고 빌립보 교회가 세워졌다. 바다의 위험이라고 나온다. 로마로 가는 길에 유라굴로 태풍을 만난 것과 비슷한 사건일 것이다. 유라굴로라는 어려움 가운데 그 배에 탓던 276 명의 사람이 구원을 받았다. 멜리데라는 섬에 도착해서 많은 섬 사람들을 구원시키고 치유시켰다.
고후 11:28 이 외의 일은 고사하고 아직도 날마다 내 속에 눌리는 일이 있으니 곧 모든 교회를 위하여 염려하는 것이라
사도바울은 그런 고통을 받은 것이 문제가 아니라는 것이다. 그보다도 더 눌리는 것이 모든 교회를 위해서 염려하는 것이라는 것이다. 내 자신이 사는 것 보다도 영혼이 구원얻는 것이 더 소중하기 때문이다. 참 전도자의 모습인 것을 볼 수 있다. 저는 이것을 보고 부끄러웠다. 회개가 나왔다. 정말 어떻게 하면 이 사도바울과 같은 믿음을 가질 수 있을까. 참 우리가 하나님 앞에 죄송할 뿐이다. 정말 우리가 언약잡고 승리하시는 여러분 되시기 바란다.
3. 옛틀에서 새틀로
1) 전도자에게 주신 축복
237 선교 센터를 통해서 메세지를 주신 것을 뉴스를 통해서 보았다. 우리가 이것을 하나님 음성으로 잡아야겠다. 우리가 옛 틀에서 새 틀로 바꿔야겠다. 우리는 이걸 평생언약으로 잡아야한다. 옛 틀을 깨면 내 모든것이 바뀐다. 사도바울이 옛 틀을 완전히 깨버리니까 완전히 다른 삶을 산 것이다. 옛 틀이 깨져야만이 새로운 삶을 살 수 있다. 이것을 깨버리지 않게되면 건강, 경제, 모든 영적 수준이 옛 틀을 벗어날 수 없다. 이것을 발견하는 것이 중요하다. 성경을 보게되면 계속적으로 옛 틀을 벗으라 하는 내용을 주님께서도 말씀하셨다. 예수님께서 제자들을 보고 사람들이 나를 보고 누구라 하는냐 하고 물으셨다. 제자들은 “엘리야 입니다 예레미야 입니다 세례요한 입니다 선지자 입니다” 라고 대답한다. 주님께서 물으시는 질문의 포인트가 무엇인가. 너희들 그런 틀에서 벗어나라는 것이다. 이제 그리스도를 제대로 잡으라는 것이다. 이것 아니면 안된다는 것이다. 마 17장에 변화산 사건이 나타난다. 엘리야도 모세도 나타납니다. 결론은 무었인가. 오직 예수 외에는 아무도 보이지 않았더라. 이 틀로 바꾸라는 것이다. 다시 한 번 영적인 눈을 떠야겠다. 마 18장에 제자들이 물었다. 천국에서 누가 큽니까. 예수님께서 말씀하신다.
마18:4 그러므로 누구든지 이 어린 아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 천국에서 큰 자니라
세상에서는 누가 큰가. 돈 많은 사람, 높은 사람, 잘 나가는 사람들이다. 천국은 절대 그게 아니라는 것이다. 천국가게되면 대통령이 높은 자리에 있는게 아니라 자기를 낮추는 사람이 높은 자리에 있다는 것이다. 많은 사람들이 아직도 그 기준의 틀에서 벋어나지 못하는 것이다. 천국과는 전혀 반대인 것을 모르고있는 것이다. 옛 틀에서 벗어나면 산다는 것이다. 누구를 축복하시는가. 틀에서 벗어난 자를 축복하신다. 행 8장에 유대인들이 도저히 가지 않는 사마리아 성을 빌립 집사가 갔다. 자기가 갖고있던 옛 틀에서 완전히 벗어난 것이다. 하나님께서 빌립 집사에게 한 없는 축복을 주시고 에디오피아 내시고 구원하게 하셨다. 사도를 부르지 않으시고 빌립 집사를 직접 보내셔서 구원시키셨다. 정말 축복받는 여러분 되시기 바란다. 우리가 이 틀을 어떻게 깰수있는가.
2) 옛 틀을 깨는 법
이번 메세지에서 우리가 먼저 깨야할게 있다. 자신에게 있는 흑암을 먼저 깨야한다. 흑암을 먼저 깨야 옛 틀이 깨지는 응답이 시작된다. 우리가 40일 기도 2차를 하고있는데 계속 자신에게 있는 흑암을 꺾으시기 바란다. 가문의 흑암의 꺾으시기 바란다. 그럴때 옛 틀이 깨어지는 축복을 받을것이다. 옛 틀이라는 것은 이것이 내가 바꿔야할 옛 날 속성이구나 하는걸 깨닫는 순간부터 문제가 해결된다. 이렇게 하려면 어떻게 해야하나.
갈2:20내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라 이제 내가 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 사랑하사 나를 위하여 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이라
이것을 놓고 집중기도하시기 바란다. 깊은 기도 들어가시기 바란다. 생각해보시기 바란다. 내가 있는 틀은 무엇인가 생각해보시기 바란다. 도무지 나의 운명과 재앙을 막을 수 있는 새 틀은 무엇인가. 기도하시고 발견하시기 바란다. 제가 숙제를 하나 드리겠다. 내 자신이 깨야될 옛 틀이 무엇인가를 생각해보시기 바란다. 저에게 카톡으로 한 가지만 보내시라. 개인적으로 보내시기 바란다. 다른 사람에게는 공개 안하겠다. 두번째 우리 교회가 깨야할 옛 틀이 무엇인가. 한 가지만 보내시기 바란다. 저하고 같이 깹시다. 제 개인 카톡으로 넣어주시기 바란다. 이 언약이 나의 언약, 우리 교회의 언약 되야한다. 같이 큰 응답 받으시기 바란다.

사49:16 내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼고 너의 성벽이 항상 내 앞에 있나니
여러분 우리가 하나님 자녀된 어마어마한 신분과 권세를 갖고있다. 우리가 어떤 존재인가를 기록하고 있다. 내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼다고 말씀하신다. 새겼다는 것은 만연필로 썼다는 것이 아니다. 땀나면 지워진다. 여기서 새겼다는 것은 돌에 새겼다는 단어를 쓰고있다. 새겨서 영원히 없어지지 아니하는 것이다. 하나님의 손바닥에 새겨졌다. 여러분들이 어떤 실수를 하고 넘어져도 아무 상관없다. 여러분 이름은 돌에 새긴 것 처럼 깊이 새겨져있다. 영원한 하나님의 자녀다. 너의 성벽이 항상 내 앞에 있다. 성벽은 지켜주는 것이다. 내가 너를 끝까지 지켜주겠다는 것이다. 우리 이 생을 다하고 주님 만나는 그 날 까지 지켜주실 줄로 믿는다. 담대하게 나가시기 바란다. 응답받는 여러분 되시기를 예수님 이름으로 축원한다.
