하나님의 은혜와 보장된 축복(히7:4-10)
서론
지난 10월 25일에 삼성 이건희 회장이 돌아가셨다. 아버지 이병철 회장의 후임으로 삼성을 맡아서 삼성을 세계적인 기업으로 성장시켰다. 대단하신 분이다. 그런데 제가 약간 충격을 받았다. 그 장례식이 서울 동작구 흑석동에 있는 원불교 절에서 있었다. 얼마나 안타까운지 모른다. 그분이 원불교에 신도인 것은 들었습니다만 그동안에 누군가는 복음을 전했겠지 하는 마음이었다. 현대 그룹의 정주영 회장도 불신자 상태에 있다가 돌아가실 때 얼마 안되어서 예수 그리스도를 영접하고 돌아가셨다는 이야기를 들었다. 저는 그런 기적이 이건희 회장에게도 일어나지 않을까 기대했다. 그런데 그렇지 못했다. 돌아가신 분은 그렇다고 하더라도 문제는 그 아들 이재용이다. 자녀들도 있고 손자들도 있다. 저는 이 사건을 보면서 그들을 위해서 기도해야겠다는 마음이 들었다. 우리가 살아가는데 있어서 주위에 사각지대가 대단히 많이 있다. 주변에도 그런 사람들이 많이 있다. 그 재벌도 숨을 주님께서 거둬가시니까 끝나는데 그것을 모르고 살아가는 많은 사람들은 볼 때 얼마나 안타까운지 모른다. 뿐만 아니라 살아가면서 육신적인 고통을 받는 사람들이 많다. 의외로 우리 주변에는 시달리며 살아가는 사람들도 많이 있다. 올 해도 한 달 밖에 안남았다. 이 연말을 맞이해서 주변을 점검해보아야겠다. 실로 우리가 받은 축복은 어마어마하다. 우리만 알고 누리는 것이 아니라 그들에게도 알려줘야겠다. 하나님의 은혜와 축복이 얼마나 어마어마한 것인지를 알려주어야겠다. 저는 성경을 보면 정말 곳곳에 우리에게 축복을 주시기위해서 매사에 세심하게 간섭하고 계신 것을 본다. 오늘 말씀을 통해서도 하나님의 많은 은혜와 보장된 축복을 발견할 수 있었다. 모든 것이 한 구절 한 구절 마다 어마어마한 축복이 감추어져 있고 하나님께서 축복을 주시기 위해서 준비하고 계신다.
1. 하나님의 은혜
1) 십일조의 의미
4절에 아브라함이 멜기세덱에게 십일조를 바쳤다.
히 7:5 레위의 아들들 가운데 제사장의 직분을 받은 자들은 율법을 따라 아브라함의 허리에서 난 자라도 자기 형제인 백성에게서 십분의 일을 취하라는 명령을 받았으나
뿐만 아니라 레위 자손들도 십일조를 바치라는 명령을 받았다. 여기에 하나님의 큰 은혜와 사랑이 들어있다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 모세를 통해서 레위인을 선택하게 되는데 십일조의 비밀에 그 속에 들어있다. 이스라엘 백성들을 출애굽 시킬 때에 하나님께서는 애굽의 장자들은 전부다 죽음의 사자를 통해서 죽게 하셨다. 하나님께서 모든 처음 난 자를 심판하시겠다고 결정하셨는데 이스라엘 백성들은 구분해서 살리셨다.
민 3:13 처음 태어난 자는 다 내 것임은 내가 애굽 땅에서 그 처음 태어난 자를 다 죽이던 날에 이스라엘의 처음 태어난 자는 사람이나 짐승을 다 거룩하게 구별하였음이니 그들은 내 것이 될 것임이니라 나는 여호와이니라
거룩하게 구별하셨다고 나온다. 거룩하게 구분한 것이 어떤 식으로 하셨냐면 어린양을 잡아서 희생제사의 피를 뿌리고 문에 바른 사람들은 다 건너가게 되는 축복을 받았다. 하나님께서는 희생양을 통해서 그리스도의 십자가를 잡는 사람들은 전부다 거룩하게 만들어주셨다. 그러면서 하시는 말씀이 “내가 너희 장자를 구분했지 않느냐. 이 장자들은 내 것이다” 하고 말씀하시는 것이다. 이스라엘 첫번째 나는 장자들은 한 명도 빠지지 않고 살아남았다. 장자라는 것은 그 가문을 잇는 사람이다. 장자가 죽었다는 것은 그 가문이 끝났다는 것이다. 하나님께서 말씀하시기를 내가 너희 장자를 살렸으니 그 장자는 다 내것이라고 하신다. 내 것이라는 것은 하나님께서 내 영광을 위해서 사용하겠다는 의지를 말한다. 하나님께서 성전을 지어서 성전에서 수종들고 제사드리는 일을 장자에게 맡기시겠다는 것이다. 그런데 모든 12 족속의 장자들이 모여서 하나님 일만하게 되면 복잡한 일이 생긴다. 그래서 하나님께서는 명령하신다.
민 3:45 이스라엘 자손 중 모든 처음 태어난 자 대신에 레위인을 취하고 또 그들의 가축 대신에 레위인의 가축을 취하라 레위인은 내 것이라 나는 여호와니라
민 18:21 말씀 보게되면 대신에 너희들은 그 레위인에게 십일조를 바쳐라, 그러면 그들이 그것으로 살고 너희는 각 가정의 기업을 이어나가게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨다. 이스라엘 백성들이 가나안 땅 들어갈 때 족속마다 땅을 나누어 각자 자기 땅에서 살 수 있도록 하셨다. 그런데 하나님께서 레위 족속을 택하셨기 때문에 열 한 족속만 땅을 갖고 레위 족속이 가져야할 땅을 11족속에게 나누어준 것과 마찬가지이다. 레위인은 제사만 지내고 예배드리는 일만 할 때니까 너희 가진 땅에서 10분의 일을 나누어서 레위인들이 살 수 있게 하라 하신 것이다. 십일조가 이렇게 시작되었다. 십일조라는 것은 장자들의 생명의 값인 것이다. 각 가정의 장남들은 전부다 성전에서 하나님을 섬겨야할텐데 집에서 일하는 대가로 십일조를 레위인에게 드리고 그들은 각 기업에 전념할 수 있게 된 것이다. 죽어야될 장자를 살렸기 때문에 그 가문이 살게되었는데 그 대가가 바로 십일조인 것이다. 십일조라는 것은 하나님께서 우리에게 가정을 주시고 생명을 주신 것에 감사하는 표시인 것이다.
2) 영원한 제사장
그런데 문제는 이 레위인들이 십일조 받기 이전에 멜기세덱이 먼저 아브라함에게 십일조를 받았다는 것이다.
히 7:6 레위 족보에 들지 아니한 멜기세덱은 아브라함에게서 십분의 일을 취하고 약속을 받은 그를 위하여 복을 빌었나니
아브라함이 왜 바쳤는가. 그 때는 하나님의 명령도 없었다. 멜기세덱이 달라고 요구를 해서 받은 것이 아니다. 아브라함이 스스로 자원해서 드렸다. 왜 그런가. 멜기세덱이 큰 복을 줄 자인줄을 알았기 때문에 바쳤다는 것이다. 멜기세덱과 레위인과는 차이가 많다.
히 7:8 또 여기는 죽을 자들이 십분의 일을 받으나 저기는 산다고 증거를 얻은 자가 받았느니라
하나님 명령해서 십일조를 드렸는데 십일조를 받은 레위인들은 다 죽었다. 죽어나간 후손이 이어서 제사하는데 그들도 죽게된다. 다시 말씀드리면 축복을 주는 자들이 계속 죽어갔다. 그런데 멜기세덱은 물려받은 후손이 없다. 산다는 증거를 받았느니라. 멜기세덱은 바로 죽음이 없는 사람이었다는 것이다. 이 멜기세덱을 통해서 그리스도가 바로 그런 분이라는 것을 나타내고 있는 것이다.
시 110:4 여호와는 맹세하고 변하지 아니하시리라 이르시기를 너는 멜기세덱의 서열을 따라 영원한 제사장이라 하셨도다
영원한 제사장은 바로 창 3:15을 성취시킬 바로 그 분이라는 것이다. 멜기세덱은 대단한 인물이고 축복을 주는 인물인 것을 확인할 수 있다.
2. 보장된 축복
1) 멜기세덱의 축복
히 7:10 이는 멜기세덱이 아브라함을 만날 때에 레위는 이미 자기 조상의 허리에 있었음이라
후손들이 아브라함의 뱃속에 있을 때 아브라함이 멜기세덱을 경배하고 십일조를 바쳤기 때문에 모든 후손들이 멜기세덱을 경배하고 예물을 바친 것과 마찬가지이다. 레위인이라고 하더라도 그들은 멜기세덱의 축복이 필요한 사람들이었다는 것이다. 구약시대에 인간의 죄 문제를 해결했던 모든 제사장들도 다 그리스도의 축복과 은혜가 없으면 안된다는 것이다. 멜기세덱 사건이 성경에 보게되면 창세기와 시편에 나타나는데 대단히 중요한 메세지이다. 만일에 멜기세덱의 축복 사건이 없었다면 어떻게 되는가. 또 아브라함이 십일조를 바쳤던 사건이 없었다면 어떻게 되는가. 그렇게 되면 예수님이 그리스도이시며 제사장되신 것이 불법이 되는 것이다. 분명히 성경에는 아론의 후손만이 제사장이 될 수 있다고 기록하고 있다. 예수님은 아론의 후손이 아닌데 어떻게 제사장이 되느냐. 그리스도가 아니라고 부인할 수 있다. 그런데 아브라함이 다행히 제사장을 만나서 경배한 것을 보면서 멜기세덱이라는 반차가 또 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 이것을 보게되면 아브라함에게 일어났던 이 전쟁은 우연히 일어난게 아니라 하나님의 절대계획 속에서 일어난 것을 다시 한 번 확인할 수 있다. 간단히 보면 아브라함의 조카가 붙잡혀가서 가서 살렸다 하고 볼 수 있다. 그런데 거기에 나타나는 멜기세덱을 통해서 그리스도가 이런 계통을 통해서 참 제사장으로 서는 것을 보게된다. 여기서 중요한 메세지를 잡아야한다. 우리에게 일어나는 어떤 사건이라고 하더라도 모든 것에는 하나님의 뜻과 계획이 있다. 특히 언약잡은 우리에게 일어나는 모든 사건에 조그만 일이라고 하더라도 하나님의 어마어마한 뜻과 계획이 숨겨져있는 것을 보아야겠다. 조금 전에 말씀드렸다. 하나님께서는 우리 언약잡은 자에게 항상 많은 풍성한 축복을 주시길 원하고 계신다. 그런데도 불구하고 살아가면서 힘들고 실패한 것 같다는 생각이 들 때가 많이 있다. 꼭 잡으시기 바란다. 절대로 실패가 아니고 힘든 일이 아니라는 사실이다. 하나님께서 최고로 좋은 것을 주시기 위하여 준비된 축복의 원인이다. 너무나 힘드신가. 그 힘든 것을 주님께서 알고계신다. 내가 힘든 것 보다도 힘든 것 위에 더 큰 축복을 하나님께서 예비하고 계신 것을 붙잡아야겠다. 모든 것이 다 축복과 관계되어있다. 하나님께서 인간에게 주신 축복권이 여러군데 나타난다.
2) 보장된 축복
신 21:5 레위 자손 제사장들도 그리로 갈지니 그들은 네 하나님 여호와께서 택하사 자기를 섬기게 하시며 또 여호와의 이름으로 축복하게 하신 자라 모든 소송과 모든 투쟁이 그들의 말대로 판결될 것이니라
제사장에게 큰 축복권을 주셨다. 예배권과 축복권과 치리권을 주셨다. 그래서 하나님께서 주신 이 축복은 보장해주시는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 목사된 저도 여러분들을 위해서 축복기도를 많이 한다. 하나님께서 그 축복권을 주셨기 때문에 하나님께서 보장하시는 권세이다. 하나님께서 분명히 그 말씀대로 응답하실 것이다. 부모님들에게도 축복권을 주셨다.
창 48:20 그 날에 그들에게 축복하여 이르되 이스라엘이 너로 말미암아 축복하기를 하나님이 네게 에브라임 같고 므낫세 같게 하시리라 하며 에브라임을 므낫세보다 앞세웠더라
야곱이 요셉의 아들 므낫세과 에브라임을 축복한다. 그런데 야곱이 축복한 그대로 축복이 임한다. 창 49장을 보게되면 야곱이 열 두 아들에게 축복하는 내용이 나온다. 그 말씀이 그대로 성취가 된다. 부모는 하나님께서 가정의 제사장으로 세우신 분이다. 유대인들은 이 부모님의 축복권을 알기 때문에 부모에게 절대적으로 순종한다. 자손들을 위해서 마음껏 축복하시기 바란다. 하나님께서 권세를 주셨기 때문에 그 기도한대로 그대로 응답된다. 또 성경을 보게되면 하나님 자녀에게 주신 권세가 있다.
요 1:12 영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니
우리에게 어마어마한 권세가 있다. 사단을 이기는 권세를 주셨다. 어마어마한 권세이다. 하나님께서 보장하시는 권세이다. 우리 영적으로 힘든 사람이 있는가. 고통받는 사람이 있는가. 권세를 사용하시기 바란다. 나는 비록 부족하다고 하더라도 하나님께서는 자녀에게 권세를 주셨기 때문에 사용하면 그대로 응답하신다. 그 권세는 내 권세가 아니라 위로부터 주시는 하나님의 권세이기 때문에 가능한 것이다. 한가지 더 축복하시기 바란다. 자신을 위해서 축복하시기 바란다. 나를 축복해달라고 기도하시라. 하나님의 뜻을 이루게 해주세요, 영광돌리는 사람이 되게 해주세요 하고 기도하시라. 특히 언약을 잡고 기도하면 반드시 응답이 될 줄로 믿는다. 이 응답받는 여러분 되시기 바란다. 언약에는 능력이 나타나기 때문이다.
3. 언약의 능력
1) 언약궤의 비밀
언약궤의 비밀이 있다.
히 9:4 금 향로와 사면을 금으로 싼 언약궤가 있고 그 안에 만나를 담은 금 항아리와 아론의 싹난 지팡이와 언약의 돌판들이 있고
이 돌판은 무엇을 이야기하는가. 모세가 받은 돌판은 하나님의 말씀을 의미한다. 이스라엘 백성들에게 왜 그 말씀을 주셨는가. 너희는 노예 체질, 죄의 체질에서 살았다. 이기는 방법은 말씀을 붙잡으라는 것이다. 다시 말씀드리면 언약의 돌판은 진리되신 그리스도를 상징하는 것이다. 진리되신 그리스도만 잡으라는 것이다. 그 안에 만나도 들어있다. 만나는 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에 있을 때 내렸던 하늘의 양식을 나타낸다. 광야에서 그것 없이는 살 수가 없다. 무엇을 나타내는가. 생명의 떡 되신 그리스도를 붙잡으라는 것이다. 그리스도를 붙잡으면 산다는 것이다. 그 다음으로 아론의 싹난 지팡이가 있다. 이스라엘 백성들이 아론이 제사장 직분이 되는 것을 보고 부러워서 불평한다. 하나님께서는 열 두 족속을 모아서 지팡이 열 두 개를 성전 안에 놓았다. 그런데 다음날 아론의 지팡이에만 싹이 나기 시작했다. 살구 열매가 열렸다. 놀라운 사건이 생긴 것이다. 심지도 않고 바닥에 열두개를 똑같이 놓았는데 거기에만 싹이 났다. 지팡이는 딱딱한 죽은 나무이다. 그 죽은 나무가 살았다는 것은 바로 흑암의 권세에서 사단의 권세에서 살리신 하나님을 나타내는 것이다. 그러면 새싹은 무엇을 의매하는가. 부활하신 그리스도이다. 죽은 상태에서 살아는 것이다.
민 17:8 이튿날 모세가 증거의 장막에 들어가 본즉 레위 집을 위하여 낸 아론의 지팡이에 움이 돋고 순이 나고 꽃이 피어서 살구 열매가 열렸더라
이 살구는 항상 깨어서 지키고 있다는 의미가 있다. 그리스도께서는 옛날이나 현재나 미래까지도 항상 우리를 지켜주시고 인도하신다. 이 어마어마한 비밀이 언약궤 가운데 숨어있다. 그런데 이 모든 것을 그리스도를 상징하고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 그리스도의 능력이 나타난다.
2) 언약의 능력
우리가 언약을 잡으라고 이야기한다.
삼상 3:3 하나님의 등불은 아직 꺼지지 아니하였으며 사무엘은 하나님의 궤 있는 여호와의 전 안에 누웠더니
사무엘은 항상 하나님의 언약궤 앞에 있는 전 안에서 살았다. 사무엘은 항상 언약을 떠나지 않았다는 것이다. 하나님께서 너무나 사랑하셔서 어마어마한 축복을 주시는데 그것이 단편적으로 삼상 3:19에 나온다.
삼상 3:19 사무엘이 자라매 여호와께서 그와 함께 계셔서 그의 말이 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 않게 하시니
이 축복 받으시기 바란다. 언약 잡고 계속 누리게되면 이와 똑같은 역사가 나타날 줄로 믿는다. 사무엘에게만 주시는 역사가 아니라 여러분들에게 주시기 위해서 기록된 말씀이다. 뿐만 아니다.
수 3:17 여호와의 언약궤를 멘 제사장들은 요단 가운데 마른 땅에 굳게 섰고 그 모든 백성이 요단을 건너기를 마칠 때까지 모든 이스라엘은 그 마른 땅으로 건너갔더라
언약궤가 강 가운데 있으니까 물이 끊어져서 벽이 되었다. 무엇을 의미하는가. 여러분들의 삶을 위험 가운데서 지켜주신다는 것이다. 죽을 위기에 있지만 사실은 하나님께서 완벽하게 여러분들을 지켜주고 계신다. 여러분들의 문제는 전혀 문제가 될 것이 없다. 바로 언약의 주인공 되신 그리스도께서 계시기 때문이다. 믿으시기 바란다. 잡으면 나의 것이다.
수 6:8 여호수아가 백성에게 이르기를 마치매 제사장 일곱은 양각 나팔 일곱을 잡고 여호와 앞에서 나아가며 나팔을 불고 여호와의 언약궤는 그 뒤를 따르며
이스라엘 백성들이 여리고 성을 점령하는데 언약궤가 먼저 앞으로 갔다. 7일 동안 돌았다. 언약궤를 앞서서 돌기만 했는데 여리고가 무너졌다. 그 어마어마한 여리고 성이 손도 안대고 무너졌다. 여러분들이 언약을 잡고 있게되면 흑암의 권세는 하나님께서 무너뜨리신다. 우리가 감당하지 못하는 것은 하나님께서 하시는 것이다. 다시는 일어나지 못하도록 완벽하게 무너뜨리신다. 언약궤가 가는 곳에는 요단이 마른 땅이 되고 여기고가 무너지는 역사가 일어났다. 다시 말씀드리면 모든 문제와 위기가 하나님의 능력으로 완전히 해결된다. 여러분들의 최고 위기와 문제는 최고의 응답으로 떨어지게 될 줄로 믿는다. 왜 그런가. 하나님께서 여러분들과 함께 계시기 때문이다. 모든 문제 해결자되신 주님께서 여러분 속에 함께 계시기 때문이다. 응답받는 여러분 되시기 바란다.
결론
고전 10:11 그들에게 일어난 이런 일은 본보기가 되고 또한 말세를 만난 우리를 깨우치기 위하여 기록되었느니라
이 모든 일어난 사건은 구약시대에 끝난 것이 아니라 지금도 똑같이 일어날 수 있다는 것이다. 내 언약으로 받아들이는 순간에 반드시 말씀이 성취되는 축복의 역사가 나타날 줄로 믿는다. 승리하시기 바란다.
God's Grace and Guaranteed Blessings (Hebrews 7:4-10)

“4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. 5 And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; 6 but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better. 8 Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives. 9 Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.”
Introduction
The CEO of Samsung passed away last month and the son who inherited the company had made the company into a very renowned company. I believe that Samsung and the CEO of Samsung are greatly renowned. I was really surprised when the former CEO passed away as well as with his funeral. His funeral was held at a Buddhist temple and when I saw that, I thought it was unfortunate. I heard that the CEO was Buddhist but I wondered if anyone around him shared the gospel to him. Also, the former Hyundai CEO was a nonbeliever but before he passed away, he accepted Christ and became a Christian. I truly hoped that the same miracle was going to happen to the former Samsung CEO but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. The former CEO passed away but the problem was the current CEO, the son of the former CEO and his grandchildren. When I saw this, I realized that I needed to pray for this family. The reason why I am discussing this situation regarding Samsung is that there are a lot of people around us who are living like this and who have become our blindspots. These conglomerates are living without knowing who Christ is but there are so many other people who are busy living their lives without knowing who Christ is. Not only that but as we are living in this world, there are so many people who are living in suffering. Even people around us and people we know are living in suffering. We only have one month left of 2020 and we need to examine our surroundings once again. The blessings that we have received are tremendous, we shouldn’t just know and enjoy them by ourselves but we need to share them with people around us. We need to share how tremendous the blessings that God has given to us. When you look in the Bible, in order to bless us and give us His grace, God showed us His concern and focus. Through today’s scripture, there were many prepared blessings and grace that God has prepared for us. Each Bible verse has hidden tremendous blessings that God has prepared for us.
1. God's Grace
1) The meaning of tithe
Verse 4 - Abraham gave an offering to Melchizedek.
Verse 5 - Not only that but the sons of Levi also gave offerings. When you look at the content of tithe, I realized there is great blessing, grace, and love of God behind tithe. We can see the mystery of Christ within tithe. When the Israelites experienced the Exodus from Egypt, God killed all of the firstborns of Egyptians but God saved all of the Israelites.
Numbers 3:13, 45, 21 (“Because all the firstborn are Mine. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They shall be Mine: I am the Lord. 21 From Gershon came the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimites; these were the families of the Gershonites. 45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. The Levites shall be Mine: I am the Lord.”) - How did God discern the people, it was determined by who gave the blood sacrifice and posted it onto their doorpost, these people were saved during the Passover. Through the blood sacrifice of the lamb, God made them righteous through the cross. That is why God said that these firstborn were His. That is why every Israelites who held onto the covenant of the blood sacrifice, they were saved. The history of the firstborn, there is an important meaning behind it, they received the entire inheritance. If the firstborn died, the blood line and lineage of that family ended. God said that His firstborn are His and this means that He will use them for His glory. God allowed all of the worship services and blood sacrifices to arise through the firstborn. All of the 12 tribes’ firstborns died and that would cause a huge problem.
Numbers 3:45, 21 - When the Israelites entered into the land of Canaan, their land was separated into 12 separate lands so they could live peacefully. God chose the Levites and they would carry on the inheritance of each household. Only the 11 tribes had land and the land that the Levites had to possess was distributed to the 11 tribes. God chose the Levites and they were responsible only for performing blood sacrifices and giving worship to God. So, the tribes would divide the tenth of their land so that the Levites could live there. This was where the word, “tithing” started. Tithing was used as a term to place a price on the lives of the firstborn. All the eldest sons of each family had to serve God in the temple, but they gave tithes to the Levites in return for their work at home, so that they could devote themselves to their respective businesses. God would save the eldest son who was supposed to die, for all mankind were supposed to die, and this allowed the entire family to live and the pricing behind this was paid by the tithe. Tithe allows us and our family line to thank God for all of the things that He has given to us.
It says that Abraham gave tenth of his spoils to Melchizedek. The moment Abraham saw Melchizedek, he gave the tenth of his spoils without any hesitation. Melchizedek didn’t request or demand Abraham to give him the tenth of his spoils but Abraham gave it voluntarily. Why was that? Abraham knew that Melchizedek would give him great blessings.
2)The eternal priest
Verses 6, 8 - All of the Levites who received tithe all ended up dying and perishing. The descendants of Levites continued to offer blood sacrifices but they also died as well. But what about Melchizedek? There were no descendants that he left behind. What kind of person was Melchizedek? He experienced no death. Through Melchizedek, it explains who Jesus Christ would be like. Just like it was explained in Psalms 110:4 (“The Lord has sworn And will not relent, 'You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.’ ”) - He is the Messiah who would fulfill the covenant of Genesis 3:15. Abraham was able to see that Melchizedek was a tremendous being.
2. Guaranteed Blessings
1) The blessing of Melchizedek
Verse 10 - When Melchizedek met Abraham, Abraham was still in the loins of his father. Abraham would worship and serve Melchizedek and give his tithe to him which allowed the descendants and people of the Israelites to also give their offerings to Melchizedek. These were people who needed the blessings from Melchizedek. In other words, all of the priests who would perform sacrifices to cleanse the sins of people, they still needed God to help with their own sins. This shows a great message from Melchizedek. What would happen if the event of the blessing of Melchizedek did not exist? What would happen if Abraham did not give tithe to Melchizedek? If that were to happen, then it would become illegal for Jesus Christ to become the Priest. It absolutely said that only through the lineage of Aaron, you can only become a priest. But Jesus did not come through the lineage of Aaron so people can argue that Jesus cannot be a priest. But thankfully Abraham met a priest and served Melchizedek and gave his tithes to him. When you look at this, the war that happened to Abraham, it happened according to God’s absolute plan. If you look at this simply, you can see that Abraham caused this war to happen in order to rescue his nephew, Lot but Melchizedek who appeared though this war was able to rise up as a True High Priest. There is an important message that we must hold onto from here. Even small incidents that arise in our lives, we need to see that there are God’s great and absolute plans behind them. We who have the covenant, any situations that arise, there are tremendous blessings and plans of God hidden in them.
I have mentioned this before, for those who hold onto the covenant, God wants to pour down His tremendous and great blessings to us. But despite that, we only focus on our hardships and failures. You need to hold onto something here. There are no problems and hardships for us. God wants to lead us towards greater and better blessings. Are you having a hard time? God knows how hard it is for you. Even if you are having a hard time, we need to hold onto the fact that there are greater blessings that God has hidden for us. All things are an opportunity for blessings. There are different incidences where God has prepared blessings for you.
2) Guaranteed blessings
Deuteronomy 21:5 (“Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come near, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister to Him and to bless in the name of the Lord; by their word every controversy and every assault shall be settled.”) - God prepared great blessings for the priests. The blessing to minster and to bless people in God’s name. These are the guaranteed blessings that God has poured down to the priests. That is why as a pastor myself, I have been guaranteed the blessing to bless you and I always pray the blessing prayer for you. Since God has granted me this blessing, I am able to bless you. God will absolutely bless you. Also parents have been granted this blessing to bless your children.
Genesis 48:20 (“So he blessed them that day, saying, 'By you Israel will bless,' saying, May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.”) - We can see Jacob blessed his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. But the exact blessing that Abraham gave to his child, Isaac the to his son, Jacob were also bestowed the exact blessings to his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. The exact blessing and message was fulfilled exactly as it was prayed and relayed to them. God was the one who prepared the parents to bestow blessings onto their children as parents. The Jews knew the significance of the blessings of their parents so that is why children never go against their parents. As parents, you have the authority and blessing to bless your children. When you pray the prayer of blessings to your children, then God will absolutely answer and bless your children.
You also have blessings as children of God as seen in John 1:12 (“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”) - We have tremendous authority as children of God. We have the authority to overcome Satan. This is a tremendous authority. This is the guaranteed authority God has given to you. Are you in the midst of problems and suffering? Use your authority. You may feel lacking but God has granted you authority as children of God and when you pray with that authority, then God will answer you. That authority is not your own but is the authority from above, it is God’s authority. May you bless your children. May you pray for the blessing to bless yourself. Ask God to bless you since you are a child of God. Ask God to fulfill God’s plan for you and that you can give glory to God. Especially when you pray with the covenant, then absolute answers and blessings will come. Receive answers. Inside of the covenant, there are tremendous blessings and answers.
3. The Power of the Covenant
1) The mystery of the Ark of the Covenant
Hebrews 9:4 (“Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.”) - Within the covenant, there were the golden censer, Aaron’s bud, tablets of the covenant. The tablets of the covenant were referring to the word of God. Why did God give His word to the Israelites? God was reminding them that they used to live as slaves and they need to come out of the lives of living like slaves by holding onto the word. In other words, the tablets of the covenant were referring to the word of God and Christ. When you hold onto Christ, then that is it. There was also manna. When the Israelites were in the wilderness, God poured down manna to them for them to eat and survive. What does this mean? Hold onto Christ who is the bread of life. When you hold onto and “eat” Christ, then you will live. Regarding Aaron’s rod, there were many people who were envious of Aaron because he was designated as the official priest. God commanded them for them to bring 12 tribes but only Aaron’s rod started sprouting. Fruits were being bore through Aaron’s rod. This was a great event. The 12 rods were all out there but only Aaron’s rod was sprouting with fruits. A rod is made up of a dead tree and branch but it bore great fruit, what did this mean? This was showing God who will give life from the hands of darkness. The sprout of fruits is referring to Christ. This means that Christ will grant us life.
Numbers 17:8 (“Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds.”) - This almond tree holds the meaning that it is always guarded and stays awake. Always remember that God is alive and always watching us. God is always watching and protecting us whether it was in our past, present, and in our future. The ark of the covenant, this is all representing Christ. It represents the power of Christ. We keep telling you to hold onto the covenant.
2) The power of the covenant
1 Samuel 3:3, 19 (“And before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the Lord where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, 19 So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.”) - Samuel always lied next to the ark of the covenant. Samuel never left the ark of the covenant. God truly loved and blessed Samuel who always stood next to the ark of the covenant and the content of his blessings is seen in 1 Samuel 3:19. May you receive this blessing. When you hold onto the covenant, then the same blessing will come to you. What is absolute is that these are the same blessings and works that not only arose for Samuel but it was recorded to show us that we all receive the same blessing.
Joshua 3:17 (“Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.”) - The water stopped and it spilled. What does this mean? God will protect you in the midst of problems and crises during your life. You may seem like you are standing before a crisis but God is perfectly guiding and protecting you. Your problems are not problems at all. It is because Christ who is the main figure of blessings and the covenant is with you. When you hold onto the covenant, it becomes yours.
Joshua 6:8 (“So it was, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Lord advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.”) - When the Israelites were walking around the wall of Jericho, the ark of the covenant was leading them and was ahead of them. All they did was walk around the wall of Jericho while they were holding the covenant and the wall broke down. The Israelites did nothing but just walk around but this wall completely collapsed. When you hold onto the covenant and the word of God, then all darkness will be broken down through God who is with you. Things you cannot do, God will do it. God will break anything down. May you hold out this. Wherever the covenant goes, that place will become an overflowing and flourishing land. All problems and crises will be completely solved through God and His covenant. Your greatest problems and crises will become the greatest blessings and answers for you. Why is that? God is with you. Jesus Christ who is with you solved all problems. May you receive answers.
Conclusion
1 Corinthians 10:11 (“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”) - In other words, all things that happened in the Old Testament didn’t just happen for no reason but they will occur and be fulfilled in our lives now and in the future. When you take the covenant as your own, then the blessings and God’s word will be fulfilled in your life. May you be victorious in the name of Jesus Christ.
