“응답을 받지 못하는 이유"

1 여호와의 손이 짧아 구원하지 못하심도 아니요 귀가 둔하여 듣지 못하심도 아니라 2 오직 너희 죄악이 너희와 너희 하나님 사이를 갈라 놓았고 너희 죄가 그의 얼굴을 가리어서 너희에게서 듣지 않으시게 함이니라 3 이는 너희 손이 피에, 너희 손가락이 죄악에 더러워졌으며 너희 입술은 거짓을 말하며 너희 혀는 악독을 냄이라 4 공의대로 소송하는 자도 없고 진실하게 판결하는 자도 없으며 허망한 것을 의뢰하며 거짓을 말하며 악행을 잉태하여 죄악을 낳으며 5 독사의 알을 품으며 거미줄을 짜나니 그 알을 먹는 자는 죽을 것이요 그 알이 밟힌즉 터져서 독사가 나올 것이니라 6 그 짠 것으로는 옷을 이룰 수 없을 것이요 그 행위로는 자기를 가릴 수 없을 것이며 그 행위는 죄악의 행위라 그 손에는 포악한 행동이 있으며 7 그 발은 행악하기에 빠르고 무죄한 피를 흘리기에 신속하며 그 생각은 악한 생각이라 황폐와 파멸이 그 길에 있으며 8 그들은 평강의 길을 알지 못하며 그들이 행하는 곳에는 정의가 없으며 굽은 길을 스스로 만드나니 무릇 이 길을 밟는 자는 평강을 알지 못하느니라.
서론 Introduction
막 Mark 2:5
제가 칼럼을 하나 읽었다. 뉴질랜드 사는 목사님의 사모님이 3년동안 질병을 앓고 있었다고 한다. 그러다가 어느 집회에 참여 하게 되었다. 그런데 첫날 메시지에서 큰 은혜를 받았다. 그 가운데 가장 마음에 담긴것이 스스로 회개를 하지 않았다 깨달은것이다. 그 메시지를 붙들고 기도 했다고 한다. 그 집회가 끝난 후 사모님은 많은 집회에 모인 성도들 앞에 간증 했다고 한다, “저는 주신 말씀에 은혜 받고 깊은 회개에 들어갔습니다. 하나님은 제게 치유의 역사를 이루셨습니다. 3년동안 제게 고통을 주었던 질병이 깨끗히 나았습니다” 라는 간증을 했다. 그 이야기를 읽으며 죄로 인한 질병이 있구나 깨달았다. 그렇게 성경에서 과연 그러한 것이 있는지 찾아 보았다. 마가복음 2장에 그 내용이 나온다. 중풍병에 걸린 친구를 치유하기 위해 친구 네명이 그 환자를 데리고 예수님 앞에 나아왔다. 사람들이 너무 많아 들어갈수 없었다. 지붕에 올라가 지붕을 뚫고 들것을 천장에서 내렸다. 그 모습을 본 주님께서 하신 말씀이 막2:5이다, “예수께서 그들의 믿음을 보시고 중풍병자에게 이르시되 작은 자야 네 죄 사함을 받았느니라 하시니.” 죄사함을 받았다는 예수님의 선포의 말씀에 그는 벌떡 일어나 걸어서 나갔다고 나온다. 죄사함 받는것이 이렇게 중요하구나 다시한번 깨닫게 되었다.
1. 하나님의 긍휼 God's mercy
1) 이스라엘의 불평 Israel's complaints
사 Isaiah 59:1-2, 58:3

우리가 계속해서 이사야서를 보고 있지만 죄에 대한 문제에 대해 오늘 이야기 하신다. 1절 말씀에, “ 여호와의 손이 짧아 구원하지 못하심도 아니요 귀가 둔하여 듣지 못하심도 아니라” 불평하는 이스라엘을 보며 하신 말씀이다. 이 내용은 사 58:3 에서부터 그 내용을 확인 할수 있다. “우리가 금식하되 어찌하여 주께서 보지 아니하시오며 우리가 마음을 괴롭게 하되 어찌하여 주께서 알아 주지 아니하시나이까,” 이스라엘 백성들이 아무리 기도해도 하나님께서 응답 해주지 않는다 불평하는 내용이다. 그 원인을 말씀해 주시는데 그것이 2절에 나온다, “오직 너희 죄악이 너희와 너희 하나님 사이를 갈라 놓았고 너희 죄가 그의 얼굴을 가리어서 너희에게서 듣지 않으시게 함이니라”. 너희가 응답 받지 못한 이유는 너희 죄악 때문이다 라고 하시는 것이다. 그것이 너희와 너의 하나님 사이를 갈라놓았다 라고 말한다. 이 사이를 갈라놓았다는 것은 히브리 원어를 보면 마붓딜림 이라는 단어를 쓰고 있는데 이는 담벽을 이루었다 라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 지금 하나님께서 가까이 가시려고 해도 더럽고 추한 죄악으로 담벽을 쌓아 갈수가 없다는 의미이다. 너희들이 응답 받기 위해서는 더럽고 추한, 냄새나는 담벽을 헐어라 하는 말이다. 그런데 이 사람들은 기도를 하고 있다고 한다. 마태복음 23:37에 보면 주님께서 말씀하신다, “예루살렘아 예루살렘아 선지자들을 죽이고 네게 파송된 자들을 돌로 치는 자여 암탉이 그 새끼를 날개 아래에 모음 같이 내가 네 자녀를 모으려 한 일이 몇 번이더냐 그러나 너희가 원하지 아니하였도다.” 지금 이사야서를 계속 보아오고 있지만 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들에게 계속해서 메시지를 주시며 돌아오라 하신다. 예수님께서 지금 말씀 하시는것이다, 내가 얼마나 많이 돌아오라고 했느냐. 그러나 너희는 원하지 아니하였도다 하는 것이다. 그럼 여기서 우리가 생각 해보아야 한다. 이스라엘 백성들은 기도 했다고 한다. 그런데 주님께서는 원하지 않고 있다고 말씀 하신다. 여기에 무슨 문제가 있는가. 이것은 하나님께서 주시기 원하는 참 응답을 이스라엘 백성들은 원하지 않고 있다는 말이다. 이것이 중요하다. 응답을 받으려면 하나님이 원하시는 기도를 해야 하는것이다.
2) 이스라엘의 신앙 상태 The state of Israel's faith
사 Isaiah 59:3-4

그러면 그들이 어떠한 기도를 했는가. 바로 3절부터 이야기한다, “이는 너희 손이 피에, 너희 손가락이 죄악에 더러워졌으며 너희 입술은 거짓을 말하며 너희 혀는 악독을 냄이라”. 놀라운 말씀이다. 너희 손이 피에 젖어 있다는 말이다. 너희가 하는 모든 행동은 남을 멸망시키는 일이고 그것에 전념하고 있다는 말씀이다. 너희 손가락이 죄악에 더러워졌다고 했다. 그 뜻은 구체적으로 악행을 행했다는 말이다. 또 너희 입술은 거짓을 말하며 너희 혀는 악독을 내니라 했다. 입에서 말하는 것들은 거짓이며 남을 모함하는 말을 한다는 뜻이다. 그리고 악독한 일만 일삼는것을 말한다. 이게 무엇을 의미하나. 지금 이 사람들의 기도제목들이 바로 이러한 것들 이라는 말이다. 그들의 기도제목은 전부 자기 기준에 의하고 자기만을 위한 것들 이라는 말이다. 하나님 믿는다고 하는 사람들의 기도이다. 이런 기도 전혀 하신적 없으신가. 너무나 고난을 받았는데 예수 믿는 사람들에게 그런것이다. 하나님, 살아계시다면 원수를 갚아주시옵소서. 정말 저런 사람이 천국에 가야겠습니까? 이런 기도는 하나님 앞에 합당치 못한 기도이다. 4절, “공의대로 소송하는 자도 없고 진실하게 판결하는 자도 없으며 허망한 것을 의뢰하며 거짓을 말하며 악행을 잉태하여 죄악을 낳으며” 이스라엘의 영적 상태가 얼마나 타락 했는지 이 말씀 통해서 알수가 있다. 하나님을 믿는 사람이 하나님이 주신 율법을 떠난 것이다. 율법을 집행하는 제사장들도 불의에 가득 차 있는 것이다. 이 법에 참 의미를 모르고 하나님의 뜻을 모르고 오직 기준은 자신의 유익을 바라는 것이다. 하나님께서 저를 사랑하시면 그 증거를 주셔야 할것 아니냐, 어떻게 이럴수가 있나 하며 원망 하는 것이다. 하나님께서 말씀하신 네 이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하라 라는 말씀과 전혀 상관없이 말이다. 이들이 어느정도로 타락 했는가, 그 누구도 자기가 억울한 일을 당해도 고소하는 일이 없다. 억울한 일을 당해도 고발해서 이걸 풀어주세요 하고 법정에 나가는 사람이 없었다. 그 뜻은 나도 그렇게 똑같이 살면 되는거야 생각 하는 것이다. 말씀에, “허망한 것을 의뢰하며 거짓말을 말하며 악행을 잉태하여 죄악을 낳으며” 악에는 악으로 갚는 것이다. 눈에는 눈, 이에는 이 라고 네가 그러면 나도 똑같이 한다 라고 대응 하는것이다. 지금 이러한 상태가 이스라엘 백성들의 영적상태이다. 이 시대 뿐만 아니라 많은 시대에 이런 모습이 나타났다. 로마서 3:12, “다 치우쳐 함께 무익하게 되고 선을 행하는 자는 없나니 하나도 없도다.” 하나님 떠난 자가 영적으로 깊이 썩어있는 것을 말한다. 복음을 떠난 자가 가진 본성을 나타내는 것이다.그럼 이것을 어떻게 고칠수가 있느냐 이 말이다. 근본적으로 오염 되어있는 영혼과 육체를 해결하기 위해서는 오직 주님께서 말씀하신 요3:3 말씀 밖에 없는것이다, “예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 진실로 진실로 네게 이르노니 사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 없느니라.” 죄를 해결 할수 있는 정확한 방법은 제사장 되시는 그리스도를 붙잡는것이다. 그렇기 때문에 우리가 그리스도를 붙잡아야 하는 것이다. 이 부패된 세상을 고치는 것은 그리스도 뿐이다.
2. 하나님의 은혜 God's grace
1) 소망이 없다 There is no hope
사 Isaiah 59:5-6
요 John 3:14-15
뿐만 아니다, 5절, “독사의 알을 품으며 거미줄을 짜나니 그 알을 먹는 자는 죽을 것이요 그 알이 밟힌즉 터져서 독사가 나올 것이니라”. 독사의 알을 품는다는 말이 무슨 말인가. 악행을 행하다 보면 그 악행 통해 또 다른 죄악이 탄생되는것을 말한다. 내가 악을 행하면 그 다음 행할 악이 예비 되어 있는것이다. 죄가 이렇게 무섭다. “거미줄을 짜나니”, 그 악을 행하면서 촘촘히 거미가 거미줄 짜듯이 치밀하게 다음 악행을 계획 하게 되는것이다. 그 알을 먹는 자는 죽을것이다 라고 한다. 그 알은 죄악을 나타낸다. 그 죄악을 행하는 자는 반드시 죽을것 이라는 말이다. 그 알이 밟힌즉 터져서 독사가 나올것이라고 한다. 악이다 하고 밟아 버리는데 그 안에서 오히려 터져서 독사가 나온다 라고 하는 말이다. 악행을 행하는 자의 미래를 말하는 것이다. 미래가 멸망 될 뿐만 아니라 그의 후손까지도 마귀의 자녀가 되는 것을 말한다. 6절 말씀 보겠다, “그 짠 것으로는 옷을 이룰 수 없을 것이요 그 행위로는 자기를 가릴 수 없을 것이며 그 행위는 죄악의 행위라 그 손에는 포악한 행동이 있으며”. 여기서 그 짠것으로는 옷을 이룰수 없다 했다. 치밀한 계획을 세워 악행을 하지만 결국엔 그 뜻을 이루지 못할것을 말한다. 악한 계획을 세워 그것이 결국 성공되지 못할것 이라는 말이다. 뿐만 아니라 자기를 가릴수도 없다는 말이다. 이 거미가 거미줄을 친다. 그 거미줄에 걸리는것들을 거미가 잡아 먹는다. 거미는 거미줄을 치지만 거기에 숨을데가 없다. 그러니 천적을 만나도 자신을 보호 하지 못한다. 이것이 악인들의 모습 이라는 말이다. 악인들은 항상 악을 행해 불안과 공포에 항상 시달린다. 항상 근심과 걱정, 불안 속에 살아가는 것이 악인들의 모습이다. 바로 이것이 마귀에게 장악 된 사람들이 사는 흑암의 세상이다. 이들은 아무리 자기 머리를 써도 자기의 뜻을 이룰수 없고 결국에는 멸망 당한다는 말이다. 많은 사람들이 이러한 고통 가운데에 빠져 살고 있다. 어떻게 해결하나 이것을. 예수님께서 말씀 하신다. 요3:14-15, “모세가 광야에서 뱀을 든 것 같이 인자도 들려야 하리니 15 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라.” 사단을 멸망 시키는 십자가를 바라볼때 우리는 사단을 이길수 있다는 사실이다. 세상에서 사단을 이길수 있는 힘은 오직 그리스도이다. 십자가 통해 완전히 해결 되었다는 사실 믿는 자 마다 영생을 얻었다 했다. 그래서 그 분이 참 왕 되신다.
2) 평강이 없다 There is no peace

6절 이어 7절 보시라, “그 행위는 죄악의 행위라 그 손에는 포악한 행동이 있으며 7 그 발은 행악하기에 빠르고 무죄한 피를 흘리기에 신속하며 그 생각은 악한 생각이라 황폐와 파멸이 그 길에 있으며”. 왜 그런 결과가 생기는지 하나님께서 정의 하시는 것이다. 그것은 바로 죄악의 행위 이기 때문이다 하신다. 그리고 한가지를 지적 하신다, “손에는 포악한 행동이 있고 발은 행악하기 빠르고 생각은 악한 생각 이라 한다. 몸과 마음, 그리고 생각까지 전부 악으로 가득 찬 것이다. 그 가득찬 것들을 가지고 자기의 유익을 위해 기도 한다고 한다. 1절을 다시 보면 기도 하면서 하는 말이, 여호와의 손이 짧아 구원하지 못하고 귀가 둔하여 듣지 못하시냐 이 말이다. 58장에 이야기 한것과 마찬가지로 금식을 했는데도 기도 응답이 없고 마음을 괴롭게 했는데도 응답을 주시지 않습니까 부르짖고 있는것이다. 하나님께서는 도저희 응답 하실수 없는 것이다. 그래서 황폐와 파멸만이 거기에 있다는 말이다. 그들이 열심히 찾아 간 것의 결과가 바로 이러한 것들 이라는 말이다. 롬 3:14-15에 로마 시대에 타락된 모습을 말한다. 이스라엘 백성들과 똑같은 상태 였다, “그 입에는 저주와 악독이 가득하고. 15 그 발은 피 흘리는 데 빠른지라.” 입에서 나오는 말은 마음속에 있는 것들이 나오는 것이다. 마음속에서 나오는것들은 항상 악덕과 저주가 가득 한다고 한다. 우리 예수 믿는 사람들이 원망 하고 저주 하는것은 정말 삼가해야 할 일이다. 저주와 원망이 왜 나오는지 8절에 나온다, “그들은 평강의 길을 알지 못하며 그들이 행하는 곳에는 정의가 없으며 굽은 길을 스스로 만드나니 무릇 이 길을 밟는 자는 평강을 알지 못하느니라.” 참 평강의 길을 알지 못하는 사람들은 이 길을 헤메일수 밖에 없다 라는 말이다. 참 평강의 길은 그리스도 안에서 얻어야 하는 것이지 그 밖에서는 절대로 얻을수가 없다. 돈이 줄수 없고 권세가 줄수 없다. 오직 그리스도 만이 참 평강을 줄수가 있다. 한국에 역사를 보게 되면 조선시대 왕들의 평균 수명은 47세 였다. 그 역사를 보면 평소에 건강했던 이들이 왕만 되게 되면 병에 걸리고 약해졌다고 한다. 왕은 전국에 산해진미를 먹으며 최고의 의료진들이 대기해 있다. 그런데도 평균 수명이 47세 이다. 빨리 죽는 이유가 스트레스 때문인것이다. 왜 그렇게 왕들이 스트레스를 받았나. 악한 신하들이 계략을 꾸미고 여러 암투와 문제들로 스트레스에 항상 노출 되는것이다. 왕이라 한들 전부 자기 맘대로 할 수는 없었다. 그래서 조선 시대 왕들만 보아도 평강이 없이 슬픈 삶을 보낸 이가 대부분 이었다. 그리스도가 없으면 평강이 없다. 주님께서 이에 말씀 하신다, “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라.” 오직 주님만 붙잡으시라, 주님만이 유일한 해답 되신다. 이스라엘 뿐만 아니라 모든 나라에 죄의 세력이 넘쳐 흐른다. 237 오천종족 위해 그리스도가 나의 망대가 되지 않으면 안된다.
3. 하나님이 절대망대 God's absolute bartizan
1) 시대재앙을 막는 파수꾼 Watchmen who block historical disasters
롬 Romans 5:1, 마 Matthew 16:16, 롬 Romans 1:16
이 시대를 보며 하나님께서는 저와 여러분들을 시대 재앙 막는 파수꾼으로 부르셨다. 로마서 5:1, “그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 얻었은즉 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님으로 더불어 화평을 누리자.” 믿음으로 말미암아 구원 받은 우리는 하나님과 화평을 누릴수 있는 축복을 받았다. 세상 사람들이 실패하는 주 이유는 의식주에 모든 관심이 있기 때문이다. 이길수 있는 방법은 마16:16 그리스도를 붙잡는 것이다. 이스라엘 백성들 처럼 고통 받는것이 아니라, 그리스도 붙잡는 순간 우리의 운명이 바뀌는 것이다. 로마서 1:16, “내가 복음을 부끄러워하지 아니하노니 이 복음은 모든 믿는 자에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력이 됨이라 먼저는 유대인에게요 그리고 헬라인에게로다.” 우리가 복음만 붙잡고 선포 하게 되면 이 시대의 재앙을 막을 축복을 받을 것임을 믿는다.
2) 나라를 살리는 파수꾼 Watchmen who save the nation
창 Genesis 45:7
하나님께서 또 우리를 나라 살릴 파수꾼으로 쓰기를 원하신다. 요셉을 보시라. 창 45:7 말씀 보면, “하나님이 큰 구원으로 당신들의 생명을 보존하고 당신들의 후손을 세상에 두시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나니.” 요셉이 이 복음을 잡게 되니 이스라엘 온 식구가 다 살게 되는 것이다. 이 가문 통해 나중에는 이스라엘 이라는 온 나라가 이루어 지게 되는 것이다. 이 복음 갖게 되면 나 뿐만 아니라 가정과 가문, 지역과 나라 살리게 될 줄을 믿는다. 여러분 사는 지역이 여러분이 가진 복음 통해 살아나기를 바란다.
3) 후대를 살리는 파수꾼 Watchmen who save the future generations
마 Matthew 21:13
세번째는 후대를 살릴 파수꾼의 역할을 감당하기를 원하신다. 마21:13, “그들에게 이르시되 기록된 바 내 집은 기도하는 집이라 일컬음을 받으리라 하였거늘 너희는 강도의 소굴을 만드는도다 하시니라.” 주님께서 성전에서 진노하는 모습이다. 하나님의 관심은 무엇 이었나. 기도 하는 뜰, 아이들의 뜰, 이방인의 뜰 이다. 이것이 너무나도 중요한것이다. 부활 하신 주님께서 말씀 하셨다, “온민족으로 제자 삼으라고 하셨다. 그렇게 이 세가지 뜰을 세우는 것이다. 이 축복 받으시는 여러분 되시라.
결론
민 Numbers 6:24-26
말씀 맺겠다. 민수기 6:24-26, “여호와는 네게 복을 주시고 너를 지키시기를 원하며 25 여호와는 그의 얼굴을 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며 27 여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 드사 평강 주시기를 원하노라 할지니라 하라.” 이 말씀 꼭 붙잡으시라. 이스라엘 백성들이 응답받지 못한 이유가 뭔지 우리가 살펴 보았다. 우리가 복음을 잡게 되면 어떤 축복을 받을것인가 에 대해 말하는 것이다. 하나님께서는 복을 주시고 지키시며 우리에게 당신의 얼굴을 비추고 은혜 주시며 평강을 주시기를 원한다. 하나님께서 언제든지 이러한 축복 주시기를 바라며 여러분들을 기다리고 계신다. 이 언약 붙잡고 기도할때 보좌의 축복, 성삼위 하나님의 놀라운 역사가 여러분 에게 임할줄을 믿는다.
The Reason You Do Not Receive Answers (Isaiah 59:1-8)

“1 Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, And your fingers with iniquity; Your lips have spoken lies, Your tongue has muttered perversity. 4 No one calls for justice, Nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies; They conceive evil and bring forth iniquity. 5 They hatch vipers' eggs and weave the spider's web; He who eats of their eggs dies, And from that which is crushed a viper breaks out. 6 Their webs will not become garments, Nor will they cover themselves with their works; Their works are works of iniquity, And the act of violence is in their hands. 7 Their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; Wasting and destruction are in their paths. 8 The way of peace they have not known, And there is no justice in their ways; They have made themselves crooked paths; Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.”
Introduction
There was a news article that I read and this pastor’s wife had a physical illness for three years. And, this news article was about a healing experience. This pastor’s wife attended a conference and received a lot of grace. The reason why she received a lot of grace was because she realized that she has not repented for her sins. After she attended the conference, she held onto the message and prayed. After this conference, she came before her church congregation and gave a testimony. She told them that she gave a gratitude of repentance before God and God allowed me healing through repentance. She experienced illness for three years but God healed her through her repentance. When I read about this, I realized that we may experience illness due to our sins. I looked into this through the Bible. I found this Biblical scripture in Mark 2:5 “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, 'Son, your sins are forgiven you.' ” - Four of this person’s friends took his friend before Jesus. There were so many people that they couldn’t go before Jesus so they bought their friend before Jesus through the roof. Jesus who saw this, He responded in this verse, Mark 2:5. After Jesus said this, this paralytic person was completely healed and walked off. This is how important it is for us to receive forgiveness of our sins. We have been looking at the book of Isaiah and today’s sermon will be about sin.
1. God's Mercy
1) Israel's complaints
Verses 1-2 - The Israelites were complaining before God.
The reason why they were complaining is seen in Isaiah 58:3 “'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?' 'In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers.” - The reason why they were complaining was because they were praying before God but God was not answering them. So, they were pleading for God to answer their prayers.
The reason why God was not answering their prayers is seen in verse 2. The reason why they were not receiving answers to their prayers was because of their sins. To what extent? Their sin was separating them from God. Their sins were separating them from God like a thick wall separating them both. This wall and barrier was their sins. God was telling them to receive cleansing of their sins but the problem was that they kept on committing sin before God.
Matthew 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” - This was what Jesus said. God kept on giving the Israelites His word and kept telling them to come back to Him. Jesus Christ was telling them that the reason why He came back to them was so that they can return back to God. But the problem was that the Israelites were not willing to come back to God. The Israelites said that they were praying to God but God did not want their prayers. Then, what is the problem? This means that the Israelites did not want the answers that God wanted to give them. In order to receive answers, we must pray the prayers that God wants. Then, what kind of prayer is this talking about?
2) The state of Israel's faith
Verses 3-4 - This is an astounding scripture. It says that our hands are filled with blood. Everything that we do causes destruction to people around us. Our fingers are filled with iniquity. This means that our hands only do the work of wickedness. What we speak is only filled with lies and criticism towards others. We only do the work and act of evil. What is this talking about? The Israelites’ prayer topics were filled with only evil and wickedness. Their prayers were only filled with what they wanted and only were filled with their own desires. These were the people who would call themselves people of God were praying. You may pray to God to kill your enemies and ask God to take away their enemies. This was the prayers of the Israelites and people who are filled with their own desires.
Verse 4 - This sounds like the corrupt spiritual state of the Israelites. People who say that they believe in God but they were living outside of God’s law. They were only filled with the legalism of the world. They saw no meaning in God’s laws and they were only filled with their own standards. They tell God if God truly loves them then God will only bless them and fill their life with only good things. They don’t care about God’s law and command of loving their neighbors. If something bad happens to them, they don’t try to forgive that person or ask God for help but they want God to just avenge that person. This is you wanting to live the life that you want. They only do evil. They only want revenge. They are filled with the thoughts of what you do to me, I will do to you. This was the spiritual state of the Israelites. This was not only during this time but this is the same thing that is happening in the world right now.
Romans 3:12 “They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” - People who are separated from God, they are spiritually rotting. How can we fix this? We must solve our spiritual and fundamental problems through only one method.
That method is seen in John 3:3 “Jesus answered and said to him, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.' ” - The only method to receive forgiveness of our sins is through Jesus Christ, who is our True Priest. This is why we must hold onto only Jesus Christ. The only person who can solve our problems in this wicked and evil world is Jesus Christ alone.
2. God's Grace
1) There is no hope
Verses 5-6 - To hatch viper’s eggs means that if we continue to sin, then it will only grow wickedness and evil. If you continue to sin, then this will only allow your sin to grow. This is how scary sin is. Then, it talks about the spider’s web. Just like how spiders build their web, people who sin, they continue to plan to commit sins over and over again. Those who consume their eggs, they die. These eggs represent sin. Those who sin, they will absolutely die. Out of those eggs, poison will come out. When you crush these viper’s eggs, the poison of the vipers will come out. This is talking about the future of people who commit sin. Not only will the life of those who commit sin die but your future generation will perish and be destroyed as well.
Verse 6 - Those who come up with a plan and commit sin, their plans will never be completed in the end. Their future will ultimately be destroyed. You can’t hide from your sins. A spider builds a web and they catch their prey through their web. You can’t hide from the spider when you get caught in the web. This is showing the evilness of your sins. When you commit sin, you are always living a life in fear. You are always caught in anxiousness and fear when you are living a life full of sins. This is the life of darkness. This is a life controlled by Satan. No matter what you do, you can’t get yourself up. Many people are living this life and suffering. How can we solve this?
Jesus tells us in John 3:14-15 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” - When we look at the cross that destroyed Satan, then we can win against Satan. The only power that has the power to destroy Satan is only through the power of Christ. Only those who believe in the cross, then you will have eternal life. That is why Jesus is the True King.
2) There is no peace
Verses 7-8 - Why is there no peace? It is because of your sin. Your entire body and feet are soaked in sin. You continue to commit sin. All you talk about is sin but you continue to pray to God with sin. Then, you come around and ask God why God is not answering their prayers. That is why even if you fast, you receive no sins. God cannot answer their prayers. That is why God said that their ways will be filled with only destruction and wasting away. The result of their fate is filled with only waste and destruction.
Romans 3:14-15 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood.” - This talks about the corruption of Rome during that time. This is talking about the same spiritual state of the Israelites back then. Their words coming from their mouth, it is only filled with curses and evil. We who are people of God, our words should not be filled with curses or bitterness.
Verse 8 - Why should we not do this? People who don’t know the true path towards peace, they have no choice but to continue to live in sin. True peace is found in Christ alone but people keep looking elsewhere for their sins. Money and power cannot give you true peace. True peace is found in Christ alone. When you look at the history of Korea, you can see the average lifespan of the kings during the Joseon dynasty. Once they became kings, they would all die of an illness. They were usually fed with the best foods and receiving the best medical care but their average lifespan was 46 years old. They died early due to stress. Why would they go through stress? It was because they were filled with people around them who were filled with evil and wicked conspiracies. The kings couldn’t do anything they wanted. That is why they all ended up dying without peace and died in despair. If you don’t have Christ, then your life will be filled with only misery and despair.
That is why Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” - Hold only Christ alone. He is the only way and answer. This is not only for the Israelites but we must hold onto this. All of the Christians and people of this world must hold onto this. We cannot save the 5,000 tribes if we don’t hold onto only Christ as our bartizan.
3. God's Absolute Bartizan
1) Watchmen who block historical disasters
When we look at this age, God has called us watchmen to save this corrupted world.
Romans 5:1 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” - We who have been saved, we have received the blessing of a watchman. We were able to find peace in God. The reason why people of this world fail is because they are only filled with worldly knowledge and worldly materials.
We must hold only Christ as seen in Matthew 16:16 “Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' ” - The moment we hold onto Christ, our fate and destiny is completely changed.
Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” - When we hold onto only Christ and preach only the gospel, then we can block the disasters of this age. God wants to use us as watchmen for this age.
2) Watchmen who save the nation
Genesis 45:7 “And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.” - When Joseph held onto this covenant, Joseph was able to save his entire family. And later on, Joseph was able to save his entire nation. When we hold onto the gospel, then we can save our family, family line, our nation, and the world. Our fields will be saved because of us.
3) Watchmen who save the future generations
Matthew 21:13 “And He said to them, 'It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ' ” - We can see that Jesus was furious in this Biblical scripture. Where was God’s focus? It was towards the 3 courtyards (Gentiles, children, and prayer). The resurrected Christ commanded for us to go to all nations and make disciples. We must build these 3 courtyards. May we receive these answers.
Conclusion
Hold onto Numbers 6:24-26 “The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; 26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” - Hold onto this scripture. We talked about the reason why the Israelites couldn’t receive answers. When we hold onto the gospel, these are the answers that we will receive. God told us that He will bless and keep us. God wants to bless us and shine His face upon us. He wants to give us peace. God wants to give all of this to us so we must look up to God who has this kind of heart towards us. May the great power of the Triune God and heavenly throne be upon us.
