하나님의 영광의 광채(히1:3)
서론
오늘은 성경 한 절을 가지고 본다. 오늘 참 중요한 말씀이다. 꼭 응답받는 중요한 시간 되시길 바란다. 저는 이번 주 간에 말씀을 보는데 삼상 17:45에 다윗이 한 말씀을 묵상해보았다.
삼상17:45 다윗이 블레셋 사람에게 이르되 너는 칼과 창과 단창으로 내게 나아 오거니와 나는 만군의 여호와의 이름 곧 네가 모욕하는 이스라엘 군대의 하나님의 이름으로 네게 나아가노라
골리앗은 전쟁하기 위해서 큰 칼과 창과 단창을 들고 싸우러 나섰다. 그런데 다윗은 만군의 여호와의 이름으로 간다고 이야기고 있다. 생각해보시기 바란다. 전쟁에는 마땅히 창과 칼과 단창이 있어야한다. 그런데 하나님을 믿고있는 다윗은 그게 아니었다. 만군의 여호와의 이름으로 나간다고 했다. 지금 세상 사람들이 생각하고 있는 방법을 이야기하고 있다. 세상 사람들의 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방법이 칼과 창과 단창을 준비하는 것이다. 어떻게 본다면 당연한지도 모르겠다. 그런데 문제는 믿는 사람들도 세상에서 문제를 만나면 칼과 창과 단창을 준비한다. 당시 상황도 마찬가지였다. 하나님을 믿는다고 했던 이스라엘 백성들이나 사울왕도 그들이 의지하는 것은 칼과 창과 단창이었다. 그런데 다윗은 영적인 방법, 하나님의 이름으로 나갔다. 사울왕이나 이스라엘 당시 하나님을 믿는다는 군대들도 영적인 세계를 보지 아니하고 전쟁에 나갔다는 것이다. 지금 코로나 사태를 보고있다. 코로나의 병에 걸리게되면 치료약이 없다고 하고있다. 걸린 사람들을 보게되면 두려움과 근심과 불안에 빠진다. 그래서 미국 사람들이나 유럽 사람들이 건강함에도 불구하고 두려움과 근심과 불안에 빠져버리니까 죽어버리는 것이다. 수많은 믿는 사람들도 그냥 속절없이 죽어간다. 여기서 우리는 분명한 것을 잡아야겠다. 눈에 보이는 현실이 있다. 그러나 눈에 안보이는 영적세계가 있다는 것을 생각해야겠다. 영적 세계는 하나님이 주관하고 계시다. 그런데 죽느냐 사느냐의 결정은 하나님께서 하신다. 교회를 다니면서도 영적사실을 바라보지 못한다면 똑같이 운명을 생각할 수 밖에 없고 자기 의지로 스스로 싸워서 이기려할 수 밖에 없다. 우리는 다윗을 다시 생각해봐야겠다. 정말 하나님께서 살아계심을 믿는다면 믿는 자들은 어떻게 해야하는가. 기도해야겠다. 문제를 만나면 기도해야겠다. 여기서 우리가 분명히 잡아야할 메세지가 있다. 지난 번에 봤습니다만 바울이 멜리데에서 물리기만 하면 죽는 독사에 물렸었다. 그런데 아무렇지도 않았다. 왜그런가. 하나님께서 지켜주신 것이다. 왜그런가. 바울은 하나님께서 원하시는 일을 해야하기 때문이다. 바울은 멜리데 섬에서 독사에 물림을 통해서 오히려 멜리데섬의 지도자를 만나서 복음을 증거하는 축복의 기회가 생겼다. 그렇다면 믿는 자들에게는 문제를 통해서 하나님께서 응답을 준비하고 계시다는 사실을 붙잡아야한다. 바울은 문제를 통해서 더 큰 영적인 축복을 받게되는 귀한 기회가 되었다. 그러므로 우리는 영적인 눈이 띄어지는 것이 대단히 중요하다. 오늘 비롯 한 절이지만 한 절 가운데서 나타나는 영적사실을 분명히 붙잡아야겠다. 아주 주옥같은 하나님의 아들에 대한 말씀이 기록되어있다.
1. 하나님의 아들
1) 영광의 광채
히1:3 이는 하나님의 영광의 광채시요 –
예수님은 하나님의 영광의 광채라는 말씀이다. 광채라는 것이 무엇인가. 광채라는 것은 헬라말로 아포가스마라는 말이다. 이것은 영광의 근원에서 나온 광채라는 의미를 갖고있다. 다시 말씀드리면 빛의 근원에서 나오는 광채라는 말이다. 예를 들면 이 광채라는 것이 태양에서 나와서 달에 비춰서 달에서 나오는게 아니라 태양 자체를 나타낸다. 그래서 이 광채를 요 1:4에서는 생명의 빛이라고 이야기하고 있다. 영광의 광채되신 그 분은 생명의 빛이라는 말이다. 죽은 자를 살리는 빛을 나타낸다. 예수님은 죽은 자를 살리시는 빛이고 그 분이 바로 하나님의 아들이다. 바로 그 분이 우리와 함께 우리 속에 계시는 우리 주 예수 그리스도이다. 분명히 잡아야한다. 내 안에 계시는 분은 보통 분이 아니라 죽은 자까지 살리시는 능력의 생명의 빛을 갖고 계신 분이다.
2) 본체의 형상
히 1:3 –그 본체의 형상이시라—
하나님의 아들되신 예수님은 본체의 형상이시다. 형상이라는 것은 헬라어로 카락테르라는 말이다. 카락테르라는 것은 보이지 않는 본체의 보이는 모습이라는 의미를 갖고있다.
골 1:15 그는 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상이시요 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이시니
쉽게 말씀드리면 눈에 보이게 나타나신 하나님이시라는 말이다. 예수님은 눈에 보이게 나타나신 하나님이시다. 요 14:9에 빌립사도가 예수님에게 아버지를 보여달라고 한다.
요14:9 예수께서 이르시되 빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘 어찌하여 아버지를 보이라 하느냐
나를 보면서 왜 아버지를 찾고있느냐 하시는 말씀이다. 사람들은 겉모습을 자꾸만 보기를 원한다. 그러나 예수님은 하나님의 본질을 보여주고 계신다. 우리가 형상을 분명히 붙잡아야한다. 형상은 그림자와 같은 힘없는 존재가 아니다. 하나님의 형상이라는 것은 보이는 그 모습이다. 여기서 잡아야할 것이 있다.
창 1:27 하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고
처음에 아담과 하와를 창조하실 때 하나님께서는 자기 형상대로 창조하셨다. 아담과 하와를 통해서 하나님의 보이는 모습이 나타난 것이다. 그러나 인간의 타락으로 인해 하나님 형상을 잃어버린다. 예수 그리스도를 통해서 우리가 하나님의 형상을 회복하게 된다. 여기서 우리가 붙잡아야할 것이 있다. 나를 보면 하나님의 형상을 바라볼 수 있겠느냐. 이것을 점검해보시기 바란다. 나를 볼 때 ‘아, 저 분은 정말 하나님의 형상이 있어‘ 하는 소리를 듣고 계시는가. 많은 사람들이 이런 말을 듣지 못하고 있다. 예수 그리스도를 영접함으로서 모든 것을 받았음에도 전혀 누리지 못하고 있다. 그 이유가 무엇인가. 우리가 다시 한 번 그리스도를 발견해야겠다.
2. 그리스도 3직
1) 선지자(중보자)
오늘 본문 말씀 보게되면 계속해서 그리스도의 3직에 대해서 정확하게 말씀을 주신다.
히 1:3 –그의 능력의 말씀으로 만물을 붙드시며—
여러분 여기서 붙드신다는 것은 인도한다 이끈다 하는 의미를 갖고있다. 무엇으로 인도하고 무엇으로 이끄는가. 능력의 말씀으로 이끄신다. 바로 예수님의 선지자 직분을 나타낸다. 예수님께서 선지자 직분을 행하시면서 오늘 말씀을 보면 중보자의 역할을 행하신다. 오늘 말씀에서 만물을 붙드신다고 이야기하고 있다. 그리스도는 창세기서부터 계시록까지 전 과정을 한 눈에 보고계신다. 한 눈에 창세기서부터 계시록 세상 끝날까지 한 눈으로 보고 계시는 분이 예수 그리스도시다. 인간에게는 각 시대가 있고 각 사람이 있고 여러가지가 있다. 그 모든 것을 한 눈으로 인도하고 계시다. 만물을 인도하신다. 만물을 인도하시는데 하물며 하나님의 형상을 가진 인간은 어떻겠는가. 심지어 땅바닥에 있는 조그만 벌레까지도 모든 것을 다 보고계시고 알고계시다는 것을 생각해야한다. 그렇다면 우리 하나님의 형상을 가진 우리에게는 어떠시겠는가. 모든 일을 섭리하시고 모든 것을 말씀으로 인도하고 계시다는 것을 분명히 잡아야한다. 바로 이 분이 우리의 중보자 되신다. 중보자에 대해서 딤후 2:5에 말씀이 정확하게 나와있다.
딤전2:5 하나님은 한 분이시요 또 하나님과 사람 사이에 중보자도 한 분이시니 곧 사람이신 그리스도 예수라
하나님은 한 분이시지만 중보자도 한 분이라고 말하고 있다. 중보자가 어떤 분이신가. 하나님과 사람 사이에 중재하시는 분이다. 하나님과 사람 사이에 문제를 해결하실 분은 오직 한 분 그리스도이다.
엡 2:16 또 십자가로 이 둘을 한 몸으로 하나님과 화목하게 하려 하심이라 원수 된 것을
십자가로 소멸하시고
무엇을 말씀하고 있는가. 중보자가 하신 역할에 대해서 이야기하고 있다. 중보자가 하신 역할은 하나님과 사람 사이를 화목하게 하신 것이다. 십자가를 통해서 하나님과 사람을 화목하게 하셨다. 그런데 이것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 십자가로 이 둘을 한 몸으로 만드셨다. 예수님이 중보자 역할을 하시는 것은 하나님과 사람과의 원수된 관계를 화목하게 할 뿐 아니라 하나님과 우리를 한 몸으로 만드는 일을 하신 것이다. 억만 죄악 가운데서 하나님께 범죄하고 외면하고 배반했던 인간을 십자가에 피흘려 죽으심으로 하나님과 화목하게 하시고 뿐만 아니라 하나님와 한 몸이 되게하셨다.
욥 16:19 지금 나의 증인이 하늘에 계시고 나의 중보자가 높은 데 계시니라
욥은 벌써 오래 전 사람이다. 욥이 영적인 눈을 뜨고 이야기하는 것이다. 나의 증인이 하늘에 계시다는 것이다. 나의 중보자가 하늘 높은데 계시다. 이 중보자가 십자가에서 완성시키시고 지금도 하늘 보좌에 계신 줄로 믿는다. 지금도 여러분의 하나하나를 다 보살피고 계시다. 여러분이 기도하는 내용을 다 듣고 계신다. 그 분은 참 중보자이시다.
2) 제사장(대속자)
히 1:3 –죄를 정결하게 하는 일을 하시고—
죄를 정결하게 했다는 것은 제사장 직분을 감당하셨다는 말이다. 그래서 우리는 예수님을 대속자라고 한다. 이 대속자라는 것은 ransom 혹은 redeemer라고 한다. 이 죄를 어떻게 정결하게 하셨는가. 죽으심을 통해서 하셨다. 대속이라는 말의 원래 말은 돈이 없어서 노예로 팔려갔는데 돈을 지불하고 다시 사오는 것에 사용했었다. 그런데 예수님께서는 딤전 2:6에 이야기한다.
딤전 2:6 그가 모든 사람을 위하여 자기를 대속물로 주셨으니—
죄 가운데 멸망 받아야하는 우리를 대신해서 예수님이 몸으로 지불하셨다. 욥 19:25에 재미난 말씀이 나타난다.
욥 19:25 내가 알기에는 나의 대속자가 살아 계시니 마침내 그가 땅 위에 서실 것이라
욥이 대속자를 발견한 것이다. 여러분 대속자라는 것은 히브리말로 하면 가알이라고 한다. 이 가알이라는 것은 부채를 대신 값는 자를 나타낸다. 또 하나는 기업 물을 자라는 의미를 갖고있다. 이 기업 물을 자에 대해서는 룻기 4장에 자세히 자타난다. 룻기를 보게되면 나오미라는 여자가 아들들을 데리고 모압 땅에 들어가게된다. 거기서 며느리 룻을 받아들인다. 그런데 거기서는 아들 둘이 다 죽는다. 이 나오미는 거기서 도저히 살 수 없어서 룻과 둘이서 베들레헴으로 돌아온다. 이 베들레헴에 와서 며느리 룻이 보아스를 만나게 된다. 보아스는 남편하고 가까운 친척중의 한 명이다. 그 내용을 보게되면 보아스와 룻이 결혼해서 자기 남편의 가문을 잇게되는 내용이 나타난다. 이것을 계대 결혼 혹은 수혼법이라고 이야기한다. 이것은 구약을 보게되면 형이 결혼해서 자식이 없이 죽게되면 동생이 대신 형수과 결혼해서 가문을 잇게 해주는 법이다. 만일에 잇게 해줄 형제가 없다면 친척이 대신 해줄 수 있다. 이것은 저주받아서 멸망받을 수 없는 가문을 다시 살리는 의미를 갖고있다. 당시 대속자, 기업 물을 자는 어떤 역할을 하냐면 그 집안에 자식을 낳게해서 가문을 이을 뿐 아니라 잃은 재산을 회복해주는 일을 했다. 그래서 정상적인 가문으로 회복시켜주는 법이다. 그것을 보고 가알, 즉 대속자라고 이야기했었다. 그런데 우리는 예수님을 대속자라고 이야기한다. 왜 예수님을 대속자라고 하는가. 축복 받을 수 밖에 없던 인간이 범죄함으로 인해서 죄와 저주 가운데 놓였다. 주님께서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가심으로서 그 모든 죄의 값을 지불하셨다. 저주받기 이전 상태로 회복시키셨다. 예수님께서 이 땅에서 하신 대속자의 역할은 회복시킨다는 의미를 갖고있다. 여기서 가장 큰 축복을 받았던 사람이 룻이었다. 룻은 보아스와 결혼함을 통해서 예수님의 가문에 들어가는 축복을 받는다. 다시 말씀드리면 어떠한 저주받은 가문이라고 하더라도 주님의 십자가를 붙들게되면 가문이 회복된다는 말이다. 모든 것을 회복시켜주시는 대속자되신 주님이다.
3) 왕직(상속자)
히 1:3 –높은 곳에 계신 지극히 크신 이의 우편에 앉으셨느니라
예수님께서 십자가에서 모든 문제를 해결하시고 높은 곳에 계신 위엄의 우편에 앉으셨다.
막16:19 주 예수께서 말씀을 마치신 후에 하늘로 올리우사 하나님 우편에 앉으시니라
예수님께서 십자가에서 모든 일을 끝내신 후에 죽으시고 부활, 승천하셔서 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨다. 하나님의 어마어마한 영광을 물려받으신 순간이다. 왕위를 상속받으시는 장면이다. 어느 정도 받았는가.
빌 2:9-10 이러므로 하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사 하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고
죽기까지 복종하셨던 그리스도께서 모든 것을 완성하시고 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으실 때 하나님께서는 만왕의 왕으로서 만주의 주로서 세우셨다. 아버지 하나님의 놀라운 영광과 존귀를 자기 아들 예수 그리스도께 넘겨주셨다. 이것이 바로 상속자 되신 예수님이다.
엡 2:6 또 함께 일으키사 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히시니
이것은 무엇을 나타내는가. 예수 그리스도를 영접하는 순간에 하나님의 자녀된 축복을 누린다. 하나님의 자녀가 되는 순간에는 예수 그리스도 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉게되는 축복을 받는다. 하나님 보좌 우편에 주님께서 앉아계신 그 자리에 예수님과 함께 앉는 축복을 받는다.
롬8:17 자녀이면 또한 상속자 곧 하나님의 상속자요 그리스도와 함께 한 상속자니 우리가 그와 함께 영광을 받기 위하여 고난도 함께 받아야 할 것이니라
우리는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 순간에 이미 하나님의 상속자가 되는 것이다. 주님께서 하나님의 상속자가 된 것과 마찬가지로 우리도 똑같이 하나님의 상속자가 되었다. 우리는 하나님께 아버지 하면서 기도한다. 이것은 앞으로 우리 사는 것은 최씨 가문 김씨 가문 조씨 가문이 아니라 하나님의 가문에 들어갔다는 것이다. 하나님을 아버지로 모신 하나님의 가문 속으로 들어가게 된 것이다. 이루 말할 수 없는 어마어마한 영적 축복이다. 우리가 이 사실을 알고 정말로 이제부터 붙잡아야할 것이 이 믿음을 갖는 삶을 살아야 이 축복을 제대로 누리게 될 줄로 믿는다.
3. 믿음의 기도
1)영적 사실의 믿음
삼상 17:47 또 여호와의 구원하심이 칼과 창에 있지 아니함을 이 무리로 알게 하리라 전쟁은 여호와께 속한 것인즉 그가 너희를 우리 손에 붙이시리라
여기서 중요한 것을 붙잡아야겠다. 우리에게 생기는 사건이나 모든 것이 눈에 보이는 사실을 통해서 결정되는 것이 절대 아니다. 이 골리앗이 힘이 쎄고 강대하고 많은 병사들을 갖고있지만 절대로 그것으로 전쟁의 승패가 결정되는 것이 아니라는 말이다. 이기느냐 지느냐는 하나님께 속했다. 말씀 붙잡으시기 바란다. 사느냐 죽느냐는 하나님께 달렸다. 내 문제가 해결되느냐 되지 않느냐는 내 손이 아니라 하나님 손에 달렸다는 것이다. 문제가 생기면 세상만 바라보지 말고 영적인 눈을 뜨시기 바란다. 어마어마한 축복이 그 속에 들어있는 것을 발견하게 된다.
히1:14 모든 천사들은 섬기는 영으로서 구원 받을 상속자들을 위하여 섬기라고 보내심이 아니냐
우리는 이미 하나님의 상속자이다. 하나님의 상속자가 되었기 때문에 우리를 위해서 막강한 천사들을 보내주셨다. 저와 여러분들을 보호해주시고 지켜주시기 위해서 보내주셨다.
마 21:22 너희가 기도할 때에 무엇이든지 믿고 구하는 것은 다 받으리라 하시니라
기도할 때 중요한 것을 말씀하신다. 그냥 무의미하게 기도하지 말고 믿고 기도하라는 말씀이다. 영적 사실을 믿고 기도하라는 말이다. 다윗은 믿음 하나로서 완전히 골리앗을 꺾었다. 우리는 하나님의 상속자이다. 응답받는 여러분 되시기 바란다.
2) 언약기도
우리는 어떤 문제든지 기도해야겠다. 우리가 기도할 때 어떤 기도를 해야할 것이냐를 다시 붙잡아야겠다. 아까 바울이 멜리데 섬에 가서 살았던 이유를 말씀드렸다. 바울은 언약을 잡고 있었다.
엡 2:10 우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라
우리가 창조된 것은 하나님께서 뜻이 있어서 창조하셨다. 선한 일을 위해서 지음을 받았다. 그리고 이 일은 하나님은 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 구원하셨다고 이야기 한다. 우리 각자에게는 하나님께서 특별한 계획을 갖고 계신다. 이 땅에 살면서 이 영적사실을 깨달았다면 하나님이 나에게 주신 사명을 붙잡아야된다는 말씀이다. 불신자들과 똑같이 삶을 사는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 나에게 원하시는 일이 있음을 붙잡는 것이 중요하다. 사도바울은 축복받은 이유가 행 20:24에 나타난다.
행 20:24 내가 달려갈 길과 주 예수께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치려 함에는 나의 생명조차 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니하노라
여러분 기도 가운데 하나님께서 나에게 주신 사명이 무엇입니까 기도해보시기 바란다. 그 기도 가운데 하나님께서 나에게 주신 사명을 발견했다면 그것을 향해서 힘써 달려가시기 바란다. 삶과 죽음을 주관하시는 주님께서 생명 걸고 주님 앞에 나가게 될 때는 주님께서 우리 생명을 책임지실 줄로 믿는다.
막 16:15 또 이르시되 너희는 온 천하에 다니며 만민에게 복음을 전파하라
하나님의 가장 큰 마지막 소원은 237복음화, 세계복음화이다. 이 언약 잡으시기 바란다. 어떤 일이 생겼다, 문제가 크던 작던간에 문제가 생겼다면 기도 속으로 들어가시기 바란다. 삶과 죽음의 갈림길에 있다면 기도 속에 들어가시기 바란다. 믿음 속으로 들어가시기 바란다. 그럴 때 하나님께서 붙드실 것이다. 그것을 위해서 서원기도를 하셔도 좋다. 하나님께서 주신 이 사명을 감당하기 원하오니 저를 붙들어주옵소서. 서원하신 것을 반드시 이루셔야한다. 반드시 큰 역사가 나타나게 될 줄로 믿는다.
결론
렘33:2-3 일을 행하시는 여호와, 그것을 만들며 성취하시는 여호와, 그의 이름을 여호와라 하는 이가 이와 같이 이르시도다. 너는 내게 부르짖으라 내가 네게 응답하겠고 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라
모든 일을 만드시는 분은 하나님이시다. 그리고 성취하시는 것도 하나님이시다. 하나님의 계획이 다 있다. 시대를 향한 국가를 향한 하나님의 뜻과 계획이 있을 뿐 아니라 개인을 향한 뜻과 계획이 있으시다. 그 계획, 사명을 발견하시면 부르짖으시기 바란다. 오늘 말씀하신다. 내가 네게 응답하겠다고 하신다. 뿐만 아니라 네가 알지 못하고 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라. 성취되는 축복의 역사가 일어나길 바란다.
The Light of God's Glory (Hebrews 1:3)

“Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”
<Introduction>
Today we are looking at one Biblical scripture. It is a very important message. May you receive great answers. This week I was looking at this scripture and I meditated on 1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, 'You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.' ” - This was the message that King David confessed. When David approached Goliath, he confessed that he is going before Goliath with the name of God while Goliath came before him with a sword. When Goliath came to battle, he came with a large sword and spear but David said that he came with the name of the Lord, God. Think about this. What do you need when you go out to battle? When you go to battle, what you need the most is a sword and spear. But, David who believed in God, this wasn’t the case and necessity for him. He said that he will go to war with the name of the Lord, God. Right now people of this world, we are talking about the methods of the people of this world. The way for people of this world is to solve their problems with swords and spears. If you look at this, in one sense, this may look logical but the problem is that even for believers when problems come, they go out with swords and spears. Even for the Israelites and king Saul who said the they believed in God, what they depended on were swords and spears. But David used a completely different method. He said that he will go out with the name of the Lord, God. For King Saul and the Israelites, who said the they believed in God, their spiritual eyes were not opened when they went out to war. We are in the midst of the pandemic with the Coronavirus and if you contract the virus, there is no current cure. Those who have contracted the virus, naturally they will fall into fear and worries. Even people who are healthy, they are bound by fear, worries, and anxiety that they end up dying due to anxiety. We can see so many people dying from this virus. But from there, we need to hold onto something important. There is a reality that we must see. We need to know that there is a spiritual reality that is unseen to our eyes. The spiritual world is in God’s control. Whether you live or die, that completely depends on God. Even when you attend church, if you are not able to see the spiritual reality, then you have no choice but to live depending on your own wisdom and knowledge. And you have no choice but to fight and win with your own will. Let us look at the perspective of David. If you truly believe in God, what must you do? You should pray. If problems come, you should pray. From here, there is an important message that we must hold onto. From previous weeks we read regarding how Apostle Paul got bit by a viper on the island of Malta and was supposed to die but nothing ended up happening to him. How was this possible? God allowed Paul not to die. This was because there was something God wanted Paul to do and complete. After he got bit by the viper, this incident turned into a blessing for him to meet an absolute disciple, Publius. What does this mean? For us people of God, through problems, God has prepared answers. We must hold onto this truth. Through problems, Paul was able to receive greater spiritual blessings. If that is so, that is why it is so important for us to open our spiritual eyes. It is just one Biblical scripture today but we must hold onto the spiritual facts today. It is just one scripture but it contains the content regarding the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
1. God's Son
1) The light of His glory
Verse 3 - Jesus is the light of God’s glory. What does this mean? The light of glory, radiance translates to “apaugasma” in Hebrew. This means the glow that comes from the presence of glory. This means that Jesus is the source of light. Just like how the light from the sun reflects off the moon, this light is coming the sun. This light is referring to the light of life in John 1:4 “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Jesus is the light of life. This means that He has the power to save the dead and bring life. This means that He is the Son of God. This being is with us and is our Lord, Savior Jesus Christ. That is why we must hold onto only Jesus Christ. The being that is with us is not an ordinary being but He contains the light of life that gives us life.
2) Express image of His person
Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” - Jesus Christ is the firstborn over all creation. In Greek, it contains the meaning of, “Visible appearance of the visible body.” This means Jesus is the visible appearance and the visible body that God revealed. In other words, He is image of God. Who is Jesus Christ? He is God who was visible to man, to us.
Deacon Philip said this to Jesus in John 14:9 “Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” - And, Jesus replies through this scripture. Jesus is asking why Philip was trying to find God when Jesus was in front of him. Many people say that they want to see God but, Jesus is the reflection and image of God. We need to hold onto the meaning of the image of God. What does it mean to be an image of God? Being an image of God means that we are a complete reflection of God.
What we must hold onto from here is Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” When God created Adam and Eve, it said that He created man in His image. Through Adam and Eve, God’s image was shown. But after mankind’s corruption, the image of God was lost. But through Jesus Christ, we were able to restore the image of God. There is something that we must hold onto here. When we look at ourselves, we can see the image of God. Examine this. When people look at you, are they able to see God and the image of God through you? But not many people are able to say this about believers. Even though we received everything through Christ, we are not able to enjoy any of that. What is the reason for this? We need to discover Christ once again. Through today’s main Biblical scripture, we were able to see the three offices of Christ.
2. The Three Offices of Christ
1) The Prophet (The Mediator)
Verse 3 - “Upholding all things by the word of His power” means that God is guiding us. How is God guiding us? He is guiding us through His Word by fulfilling His role as the True Prophet. When Jesus fulfilled His role as the prophet, He was able to become a mediator for us. “Upholding all things”, this is speaking about how from Old Testament to New Testament, Jesus fulfilled His role as the mediator by performing the work of the True Prophet. He sustained all things. Jesus Christ saw the entire process from Genesis to Revelations in all one view and all at once. In mankind, we have a timeline on how things operate and move but for Jesus, He was able to see everything all at once and is guiding us throughout the whole process all at once. He is leading and upholding it all at once. But mankind with the image of God, what are we doing? God sees everything even the small insects on the ground. If that is so, we who have the image of God, how does God see us? He is guiding us with the Word of God. We must hold onto this. This Christ is our mediator.
The role of Jesus Christ as the mediator is explained in 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” - There is one Lord and one mediator. This means that there is only one mediator between God and man. The one who can solve the problems of mankind is only one being and that is Jesus Christ alone.
Ephesians 2:16 “And that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.” - He completed the role as the mediator. What does it mean to be a mediator? This means that He mediated God and mankind to meet us once again. Through the cross, Jesus has made God and man one and together once again. Christ, who holds the role as the mediator, not only did He show us the way back to meet God but made us one with God once again. We, mankind, who disobeyed God’s Word and sinned against Him, Jesus came as the mediator and allowed us to come together with God once again to become one.
Job 16:19 “Surely even now my witness is in heaven, And my evidence is on high.” - Job lived for a long time. He said this when he opened his spiritual eyes. He witnessed heaven. He confessed that his evidence and intercessor is on high above in heaven. Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God in heaven. He is guiding and watching you in everything that you do. He is listening to every one of your prayers that you are praying. This Jesus is our one and true mediator.
2) The Priest (The Redeemer)
Jesus is the one who purifies our sin, which means that Jesus is our True Priest. That is why we call Him as our redeemer. How did He purify our sins? By dying on the cross. The original word for ransom was when you would sell yourself to slavery and sell all of your inheritance due to lack of money to pay back your sins or debt. But later on you are able to pay back what you owe.
1 Timothy 2:6 “Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” - As mankind who sinned against God, we were suppose to die in destruction but Jesus Christ came down to earth in human flesh to bear all of our sins on the cross by giving Himself as a ransom.
Job 19:25 “For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth.” - Job discovered the redeemer. Redeemer in Hebrew means, “Goel”, which means to restore the rights of a person and avenge the wrongdoings of a person, on their behalf.
In Ruth 4, Naomi bought her sons to the land of Moab and took in her daughter-in-law, Ruth but her two sons ended up dying there. Since Naomi couldn’t afford to live in Moab anymore, she took her daughter-in-law and they went together to Bethlehem. When Ruth arrived in Bethlehem, she met a man named Boas. Boas was in the same bloodline as her previous husband so she married Boas to restore her previous husband’s bloodline. In Old Testament, when an older son dies, the older son’s wife would marry the younger son to restore the family’s inheritance. But if there is no one else to receive this inheritance, then it would be given to someone else in the family. This is to preserve a family line and to prevent a family line from cutting off or being destroyed. That person would play the role to restore the lost family line as well as the family’s lost inheritance. This law would restore the bloodline and family line. This is the word, “Goel.” Jesus is redeemer. Why would Jesus be referred as the redeemer as well as “Goel?” This is because Jesus Christ saved mankind who were bound by the powers and destruction of Satan. Through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, He completely bore all of the sins of mankind. He would restore the sinless state of mankind before we committed sin. This means that Jesus Christ would bring restoration to mankind as the redeemer. The one who restored the greatest blessing was Ruth. Through her marriage with Boas, Ruth was able to restore the blessing of the restoration of her family line and lineage where the Messiah would be born into. In other words, no matter how cursed our family line may be, if we hold onto Christ then we can restore our family line of blessings. This is because Jesus Christ is our redeemer who restores all things.
3) The King (The Heir)
Mark 16:19 “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God.” - Jesus Christ died for all our problems on the cross and sat at the right hand of God. Jesus Christ finished all of His Work on the cross, resurrected, and sat the right hand of God. He was able to receive all the glory of God. This means that He was able to receive the heir of the throne. To what extent did He receive this amazing glory?
Philippians 2:9-10 “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.” - Jesus Christ who took on the cross and died, He resurrected and sat at the right hand of God as the heir, who has the power and authority over all things. He received all glory from God. This is talking about Jesus Christ who is the True Heir.
What is more astounding is what is written in Ephesians 2:6 “And raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” - What does this mean? The moment you accept Christ, then you restore the blessings of becoming a child of God. You are able to receive the blessing of sitting together with Jesus at the right hand of God. We are able to receive the blessing to sit beside Jesus at the right hand of God.
Hold onto Romans 8:17 “And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” - The moment we become a child of God, we become an heir of God. Just like how Christ became an heir, we have also became an heir. Whenever we pray to God, we call him, “Father”. Spiritually speaking, our surnames are not Kim’s, Lee’s, or Cho’s but we are heirs of God. We have entered into the heir of God. This is an astounding blessing that we cannot simply explain. Then we can enjoy these blessings realistically when we pray with faith.
3. Prayer of Faith
1) Faith in spiritual facts
1 Samuel 17:47 “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.” - There is an important thing that we must hold onto here. Not everything that happens to us is determined by visible facts. Your problems and incidents that you go through does not determine your fate. Goliath was bigger and stronger than David but that did not determine David’s fate. This all was determined by God. Whether you live or die, this all determined by God alone. Your fate is not dependent on the world or even from this current virus but it is completely controlled by God. When problems come, don’t look at worldly methods but look at it with spiritual eyes. There are spiritual blessings within it.
Hebrews 1:14 “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” - We are heirs of God so God will send us tremendous forces of the armies of angels. These angels will protect us.
Matthew 21:22 “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” - When you pray, there is something important that you must hold onto. Don’t just pray mindlessly but pray with faith. Pray believing in the spiritual reality and truth. Through faith alone David was able to be victorious against Goliath. You are heirs of God. Truly receive answers. Whatever problem you may have, pray. What kind of prayer must we have? The reason why Paul survived through the different incidents and tribulations, and even from the viper, was because there was a covenant for him to fulfill.
2) The covenantal prayer
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” - The reason why we were created was because there was God’s will for us. In other words, we were created for God’s good works. And, God said that He prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. For each one of us, God has a special plan for us. As we live on this Earth, we must hold onto God’s mission for us. We are not living like nonbelievers, we need to find and hold onto God’s work for us.
For Paul, the reason why he received tremendous blessings was because of his confession of Acts 20:24 “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” - As you pray, find God’s mission for you. Pray about this. Through this prayer, if you are able to find God’s mission then run towards this race. When we stake our lives for God who controls life and death, then God will take complete responsibility over our lives.
Mark 16:15 “He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.' ” - God’s greatest and last covenant for us is world evangelism. Hold onto this covenant. No matter what happens and no matter how big or small a problem you may face, enter into prayer. Even if you are in the midst of death, enter into prayer. Go with faith. Then God will hold onto and sustain you. Make this resolution and vow before God. Pray that God will take hold of you and that you can discover God’s mission for you. When you pray this prayer then God will answer you. Great works will arise in your life.
<Conclusion>
Hold onto once again of Jeremiah 33:2-3 “This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is his name: 3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ ” - This was our 2020 New Year’s message. The One who forms all things was God as well as the One who established all things. God has a plan for all things and everything. When you discover that plan and mission, then call out to God. God is giving you the promise that He will answer you when you call out to Him. Not only that but God promised that He will show you great and unexpected things which you do not know. May you receive this covenant of fulfillment.
