믿음은 보이지 않는 것의 증거(히11:1-3)
서론
몇 년 전에 인도에서 지진이 발생해서 큰 쓰나미가 일어났었다. 수십만명이 죽었다. 또 몇 년 전에는 일본에서도 지진으로 쓰나미가 일어나서 수천명이 생명을 잃고 재산을 잃었다. 그런데 놀라운 것은 나중에 조사결과에 나왔다. 사람들이 많이 죽었지만 그 가운데 야생 동물은 한 마리도 죽지 않았다는 사실이다. 왜 그런가. 야생 동물은 지진이 일어나기 전에 느끼고 피했다는 것이다. 그런데 인간은 매우 지혜롭고 똑똑한 것 같은데 오히려 짐승보다 못한 결과가 나타났다. 새나 쥐 같은 짐승들은 미리 감지를 하고 다 도망갔다고 한다. 그럼 사람들은 왜 그런가. 사람들은 눈에 보이는 것만 믿다가 큰 재앙을 당하고 죽고 어려움을 당한다. 저는 그것을 생각해보았다. 만약 짐승들이 이 사실을 안다면 어떨까. 인간들아 참 한심하다 어찌 보는 것 만 믿고 앉았냐 하고 웃을 것이다. 우리 인간은 굉장히 똑똑한 것 같은데 보이지 않으면 믿지 않고 무시해버리는 것을 보게된다. 그런 의미에서 오늘 본문 말씀은 대단히 중요한 의미를 부여하고 있다.
1. 믿음의 실상
1) 믿음의 종류
오늘부터 볼 히 11장은 믿음장이라고도 이야기한다. 이것은 지난 시간에 이야기했던 히 10:39에 나오는 말씀, 오직 영혼을 구원함에 이르는 믿음에 대한 이야기를 자세하게 설명하고 있다. 믿음에 대해서 25번이나 나오고 있다는 것은 믿음에 대해서 아주 자세하게 설명하고 있는 것을 발견해야할 줄로 믿는다. 믿음장을 보기 전에 먼저 믿음의 종류가 어떤 것이 있는지 점검해보아야겠다. 믿음의 종류를 본다면 크게 네 가지로 나누어볼 수 있다. 금방 말씀드린 것과 마찬가지로 보이는 것만 믿는 믿음이 있다. 인간에게 어떻게 이런 믿음이 오게 되었는가. 창 3:6 인간의 타락 이후에 눈에 보이는게 너무나 탐스럽고 그것만 쳐다보다가 보이는 것만 믿는 믿음이 된 것 같다. 두번째는 영적 존재를 아는 믿음이 있다. 세상 뿐만 아니라 귀신도 알게되고 악령도 알게되고 사탄, 천사, 하나님의 존재도 알고 믿는다. 모든 종교인들이 여기에 속한다고 볼 수 있다. 무당들도 귀신에 대해서 알고 천사에 대해서 알고 하나님에 대해서도 알고있다. 뿐만 아니라 불교에서도 알고 힌두교에서도 귀신과 천사의 존재에 대해 알고있다. 이슬람에서도 알고있다. 그런데 그 다음 하나는 하나님의 말씀을 믿는 믿음이다. 구원받은 우리 성도들을 이야기한다. 예수님의 십자가를 믿는다. 영접을 믿는다. 천국과 지옥을 믿는다. 예수님께서 재림하실 것도 믿는다. 그런데 한 단계가 더 있다. 언약 속에 있는 믿음이 있다. 바로 언약 성취를 위해서 쓰임받는 사람들이 있다. 하나님의 계획 속에 있는 사람들이다. 사명자, 전도자가 갖고 있는 믿음이다. 그러면 그 중에서 말씀을 믿는 믿음은 어떤 것인가.
2) 말씀을 믿는 믿음
히 11:1 믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거니
믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이라는 말은 약속된 말씀을 믿는 믿음이다. 그러면 이 믿음이 바라는 것들의 실상이라는 것은 실제 모습을 안다는 말이다. 무엇을 통해서 아는가. 말씀을 통해서 안다.
창 3:15 내가 너로 여자와 원수가 되게 하고 네 후손도 여자의 후손과 원수가 되게 하리니 여자의 후손은 네 머리를 상하게 할 것이요 너는 그의 발꿈치를 상하게 할 것이니라 하시고
이 말씀을 나의 말씀으로 받게되면 ‘아, 그렇구나. 여자의 후손을 통해서 우리를 속였던 사단의 머리가 박살이 나는구나’ 하고 믿어지게 된다. 이것을 믿는 사람은 반드시 여자의 후손이 오셔서 사단의 머리를 박살내실 것을 믿는다.
사 7:14 그러므로 주께서 친히 징조를 너희에게 주실 것이라 보라 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그의 이름을 임마누엘이라 하리라
이 말씀을 보게되면 처녀를 통해서 아들을 낳는 사건이 일어날텐데 바로 하나님의 아들이 오시는구나 하는 것이 믿어진다. 이것이 실현이 안됬을지라도 앞으로 분명히 이런 일이 생길 것이라는 확신을 갖고있다. 뿐만 아니라 출 3:18에 하나님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.
출 3:18 그들이 네 말을 들으리니 너는 그들의 장로들과 함께 애굽 왕에게 이르기를 히브리 사람의 하나님 여호와께서 우리에게 임하셨은즉 우리가 우리 하나님 여호와께 제사를 드리려 하오니 사흘길쯤 광야로 가도록 허락하소서 하라
여기서 여호와께 제사를 드리러 간다는 것은 피제사를 드리러간다는 것이다. 바로 인간의 죄 문제를 해결할 수 있는 피제사를 통해서 내 백성을 거룩한 백성으로 만들 것이다, 이것을 허락하라는 말이다. 이렇게 구약에서 모든 약속의 말씀을 주셨는데 실질적으로 십자가 상에서 성취되었다. 예수님께서 오셔서 요 19:30에 보면 돌아가시면서 다 이루었다 하신다.
요 19:30 예수께서 신 포도주를 받으신 후에 이르시되 다 이루었다 하시고 머리를 숙이니 영혼이 떠나가시니라
바로 너희들이 바라고 바랐던 여자의 후손, 처녀가 잉태하여 낳은 아들 임마누엘된 하나님의 아들이 나타나서 실질적으로 문제가 해결되었다는 것을 말씀하시는 것이다. 약속된 말씀을 믿으면 실질적으로 모든 것이 성취되어나간다. 바로 이것이 믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이다 하는 말씀이다. 그러면 여기서 우리가 믿음의 요소가 무엇인지 정확하게 붙잡고 넘어가야겠다.
2. 믿음의 증거
1) 믿음의 요소
오늘 말씀에 보이지 않는 것들의 증거라고 말씀하고 있다. 믿음을 통해서 보이지 않는 증거가 나타난 것은 무엇을 의미하는가.
벧전 1:9 믿음의 결국 곧 영혼의 구원을 받음이라
우리가 증거를 받는 것은 영혼 구원의 증거이다. 여기서 한가지 꼭 생각하고 넘어가야겠다. 믿음의 요소를 분명히 잡기 위해서는 한가지 점검할 것이 있다.
얍 2:19 네가 하나님은 한 분이신 줄을 믿느냐 잘하는도다 귀신들도 믿고 떠느니라
귀신도 예수님이 하나님의 아들이신 것을 믿고 예수님이 그리스도 되신 사실을 믿고있다. 분명히 예수님이 인간의 모든 문제를 해결하러오신 그리스도이신 것을 믿는데 왜 귀신은 구원받지 못하는가. 이유는 한 가지이다. 알고 있음에도 불구하고 복음을 거부했기 때문이다. 십자가에서 못박혀 돌아가셨지만 자기와는 아무 상관이 없었던 것이다. 귀신이나 악령들 보다도 사람들도 그리스도인 줄 알고도 그 말씀을 나의 복음으로 받아들이지 않게 되면 아무 소용이 없다는 것이다. 십자가의 복음이 나의 것이 되야 구원이 된다. 이게 바로 축복이다. 그러면 어떤 믿음을 가져야할 것인가.
얍 2:21-22 우리 조상 아브라함이 그 아들 이삭을 제단에 바칠 때에 행함으로 의롭다 하심을 받은 것이 아니냐 22 네가 보거니와 믿음이 그의 행함과 함께 일하고 행함으로 믿음이 온전하게 되었느니라
어떤 믿음을 가져야하는지 아느냐 하는 것을 말씀해주시고 있다. 아브라함이 100세에 낳은 너무나 귀한 아들을 하나님께서 바치라고 하셨다. 그 때 아브라함은 아무소리 않고 자기 아들을 데리고 모리아산에 올라갔다. 결박을 해서 묶어서 제단에 올려놓았다. 오늘 그것을 말씀하고 계신다. 제단에 바칠 때 행함으로 의롭다함을 받은 것이 아니냐는 말이다. 아브라함과 이삭이 응답받는 원인을 말하고 있다. 22절에 중요한 말씀을 하고있다. 네가 보거니와 믿음이 그의 행함과 함께 일하고 행함으로 믿음이 온전하게 되었느니라. 믿음이라는 것은 행함을 통해서 그것이 함께 일하게 될 때 비로소 믿음이 온전하게 된다는 것이다. 그러면 믿음이 행함과 함께 일한다는 것이 무엇이냐. 하나님 말씀에 절대 복종을 하는 믿음이다. 이것을 통해서 이 믿음, 절대 복종하는 믿음을 받으시고 이제야 네 믿음을 알았다 하고 축복을 주셨다. 믿음의 요소 세번째이다. 누가복음 17:17-19 말씀이다. 예수님이 지나가시는데 문둥병 걸린 열 사람이 와서 문둥병을 고쳐달라고 예수님 앞에 기도했었따. 예수님께서 한 마디 말씀으로 치유해주신다. 가는 도중에 보니까 자기 몸이 깨끗하게 나았다. 그 때 아홉명은 기쁘다 하고 가버렸는데 한 명에 예수님께 다시 찾아왔다. 그것을 보시고 예수님께서 하신 말씀이다.
눅 17:17-19 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 열 사람이 다 깨끗함을 받지 아니하였느냐 그 아홉은 어디 있느냐 18 이 이방인 외에는 하나님께 영광을 돌리러 돌아온 자가 없느냐 하시고 19 그에게 이르시되 일어나 가라 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였느니라 하시더라
아주 중요한 믿음을 우리에게 보여주고 계신 것이다. 주님 앞에 기도해서 다 같은 응답을 받았다. 응답 받은 사람들이 다 구원받은 것이 아니다. 그 중에 한 명이 구원받았다. 이 이방인 외에는 하나님께 영광을 돌리러 온 자가 없느냐 하시고 그에게 이르시되 일어나 가라 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였느니라. 믿음의 요소 가운데 가장 중요한 것이 하나님께 영광돌리는 것이다. 이 세가지를 꼭 붙잡으시기 바란다.
2) 선진들의 증거
히 11:2 선진들이 이로써 증거를 얻었느니라
믿음의 조상들도 똑같은 증거를 받았다. 같은 믿음의 요소로 응답받는 것을 찾아볼 수 있다.
창 15:5-6 그를 이끌고 밖으로 나가 이르시되 하늘을 우러러 뭇별을 셀 수 있나 보라 또 그에게 이르시되 네 자손이 이와 같으리라 6 아브람이 여호와를 믿으니 여호와께서 이를 그의 의로 여기시고
이 사건은 아마 아브라함이 가나안 땅 간지 10년 정도 지난 85세 때 일어난 일이 아닌가 측정한다. 처음에 부르실 때 분명히 자식을 주겠다고 약속하셨는데 10년이 지나도 응답이 없었다. 그 때 하나님께서 하신 약속이 바로 이 말씀이다. 아브라함은 하나님을 원망하지 않았다. 10년 동안 응답을 받지 못했음에도 하나님께서 나타나셔서 네 자손이 별 처럼 많을 것이다 하는 말씀을 듣고 믿었다고 나온다. 믿으시는 그 모습을 보고 하나님께서는 그를 의로 여기셨다. 그것은 아브라함이 조금도 하나님 말씀을 의심하지 않았다는 것이다. 주신 말씀을 그대로 받아들이는 것이다. 말씀을 그대로 받아들이는 것이다. 참 이것이 중요하다. 이것이 구원받은 자의 특징이다. 하나님 받은 말씀이 그대로 믿어진다. 만일 그렇다면 당신은 진정한 하나님의 자녀이다. 말씀이 분명히 그렇게 되지 하고 믿으지면 벌써 그것은 나는 축복 받은 사람이구나 하고 확신하시면 된다. 구약 시대에 있던 모든 믿음의 영웅들이 말씀을 그대로 믿었다. 단 3:17-18은 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고의 이야기이다. 우상에게 절하라고 강요를 했다. 그 때 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 셋이 합쳐서 똑같은 답을 했다.
단 3:17-18 왕이여 우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 18 그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도 왕이여 우리가 왕의 신들을 섬기지도 아니하고 왕이 세우신 금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서
지금 네가 금신상에 절하지 않으면 너를 풀무불에 집어넣어서 태워 죽이겠다고 선포된 상태였다. 그 때 한 이야기가 우리는 만일 던져진다고 하더라도 하나님이 건져주실 것이고 그리 아니실지라도 절하지 않겠다는 것이다. 이 때 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 붙잡은 말씀이 무엇인가. 바로 두번째 계명이다. 하나님 말씀에 절대로 우상을 만들지 말고 절하지 말고 섬기지 말라고 했으니까 나는 안하겠다는 것이다. 내가 풀무불 속에 들어간다고 할지라도 안하겠다는 것이다. 하나님께서는 이것을 보시고 살려주셨다. 절대 말씀에 복종함으로 말씀을 지킨 것이다. 이것이 두번째이다. 세번째는 단 6:10 말씀이다. 마찬가지이다. 금상을 만들어 놓고 절하지 않으면 사자 굴에 집어넣겠다고 했다. 그 때 다니엘의 모습을 기록한 것이 단 6:10 말씀이다.
단 6:10 다니엘이 이 조서에 왕의 도장이 찍힌 것을 알고도 자기 집에 돌아가서는 윗방에 올라가 예루살렘으로 향한 창문을 열고 전에 하던 대로 하루 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하며 그의 하나님께 감사하였더라
놀라운 사건이다. 조금 있으면 자기가 기도하는 것을 이야기만 하면 사자굴 속에 들어갈 것이다. 그런데 창문을 열고 기도하면서 하나님께 감사했다. 하나님께 모든 영광을 돌리는 모습이다. 하나님께서는 그것을 보고 감동 하셨겠습니까 안하셨겠습니까. 하나님께서는 천사를 보내서 사자의 입을 막아버렸다. 이것이 바로 믿음의 조상들이 가졌던 믿음이다. 이것 하나님께서 우리에게 원하시는 믿음의 요소들이다. 저는 분명히 여러분들이 이 믿음의 요소를 갖고계신 줄로 믿는다. 정말 이것을 붙잡고 승리하야할 줄로 믿는다.
3. 믿음의 능력
1) 말씀의 능력
히 11:3 믿음으로 모든 세계가 하나님의 말씀으로 지어진 줄을 우리가 아나니 보이는 것은 나타난 것으로 말미암아 된 것이 아니니라
3절부터 31절까지는 16문장으로 나타나는데 그 제일 처음에는 ‘믿음으로, 믿음으로, 믿음으로’ 하고 기록하고 있다. 믿음에 대한 자세한 내용을 설명한 것이다. 그 중에 가장 먼저 나오는 믿음이 하나님께서 말씀을 세계를 창조하셨다는 사실을 믿는 것이다. 모든 믿음의 시작은 하나님께서 말씀으로 세계를 창조하셨다는 사실이다. 여기서부터 모든 믿음이 시작된다. 그런데 그냥 하는 것이 아니라 보이는 것은 나타난 것을 말미암아 된 것이 아니라는 사실을 분명히 믿으라는 것이다. 무슨 말씀인가. 이 세상에 있는 모든 만물은 세상이 생기기 전 어떤 물질을 통해서 만들어진 것이 아니라는 말이다. 왜 이런 말씀을 기록하고 있는가. 히브리서를 기록할 당시에 가장 유행했던 것이 헬라 철학에서 플라톤과 필라가 주장했던 우주론이 아주 기독교인들 가운데 파고들었기 때문에 이야기한 것이다. 로마 전체 사고방식이 전부다 헬라 철학에 영향을 다 받고있기 때문에 기독교인들도 영향을 다 받고있었다. 기독교 인들이 자꾸 헬라 철학에 영향을 받아서 해석을 하려고 한다. 거기서 뭐라고 이야기했는가. 헬라 철학에 의하면 태초에 혼돈 상태가 있었는데 어떤 물질, 전문 용어로 이데아가 있었다. 어떤 원인이 되는 존재가 있었는데 창조주가 그것을 이용해서 보이는 우주를 만들었다는 것이다. 다시 말씀드리면 아무것도 없는데서 만들어낸 것이 아니라 어떤 물질이 있었는데 그것을 이용해서 창조주가 우주를 만들었다는 것이다. 이것을 지금 과학자들도 주장하고있다. 과학자들이 말하는 빅뱅이 있다. 우주가 생기기 전에 어떤 원인에 의해서 폭발이 일어났다는 것이다. 그래서 우주가 생기면서 확장되면서 모든 것이 생겨났다는 것이다. 그런데 그 빅뱅이론이 너무나 당연한 것 처럼 이야기하고 있다. 그 사람들이 해결하지 못하는 한 가지가 있다. 처음에 폭발했던 그것의 원인이 무엇이냐 하면 대답을 못한다. 오늘 말씀에 보이는 것은 나타난 것으로 말미암아 된 것이 아니니라 하고 있다. 다시 말씀드리면 창조 이전에는 아무것도, 어떤 물질도 존재도 없었다는 것이다. 다시 말씀드리면 완전 허공, 완전 무에서 말씀으로 천지가 창조되었다는 것이다. 그들은 상상할 수 없는 일이다. 하나님이 있으라 하시니까 산소라던지 불소라던지 전혀 없는 상태에서 생기기 시작한 것이다. 바로 이것이 하나님의 능력이요 창조의 능력이다. 어떻게해서 이런 일이 생겼는가. 그는 하나님이시니까. 하나님의 능력은 아무것도 없는 상태에서 모든 것을 만드신 능력이다. 그 분이 바로 우리 아버지되신다. 얼마나 감사한가. 우리 언약 잡은 자는 더군다나 붙잡을 것이 있다. 그 완전 무에서 이 세상 모든 것을 창조하신 하나님이 지금 어디 계신가. 영으로 내 안에 계신다. 믿으시는가. 그러므로 천지를 창조하신 하나님의 능력의 역사를 통해서 우리가 재창조의 역사를 이룰 수 있다. 정말 믿는다면 언약가진 한 사람을 통해서 세상을 바꿀 수 있다.
2) 언약 잡은 자의 능력
언약가진 한 사람, 요셉 한 명을 통해서 가문이 살고 애굽이 살고 세계가 다 살아났다. 그 역사가 어떻게 일어나는가. 그 안에 하나님이 계시니까. 요셉의 안에 계셨던 하나님이 저와 여러분에게 똑같이 계신다. 언약을 가지면 창조의 역사는 못 이루어도 하나님과 함께 재창조의 역사를 이룰 수 있다. 출 14장 말씀을 보게되면 언약 잡은 모세 한 명을 통해서 이스라엘 살리고 홍해가 갈라지고 애굽 군데가 수장되는 놀라운 역사가 나타났다. 한 명을 통해서 그랬다. 미디안 광야에서 모세를 부르셔서 내가 너를 통해서 이스라엘 백성을 구원시키겠다 이 말씀 한마디를 통해서 이루어진 것이다. 여러분을 통해서 언약 잡은 확신을 가지면 다 살릴 수 있다. 수 10:12-13에는 언약잡은 여호수아가 하나님께 기도하니까 해와 달과 별이 멈춰버렸다. 이것은 실제적으로 있었던 역사적 사실이다. 창조의 능력을 가지신 하나님에서 스톱을 시켜버렸다. 이 능력이 여러분들에게 있는 줄로 믿는다. 확신을 가지시라. 정말 우리는 믿는다. 행 19:21 말씀에 이 언약을 사도바울이 잡았다.
행 19:21 이 일이 있은 후에 바울이 마게도냐와 아가야를 거쳐 예루살렘에 가기로 작정하여 이르되 내가 거기 갔다가 후에 로마도 보아야 하리라 하고
말씀을 잡으니까 하나님께서는 바울을 통해서 세계를 살리는 역사를 일으키셨다. 재창조를 일으키는 하나님의 말씀이 오늘 예배를 통해서 받는 언약의 말씀이다. 이 예배를 통해서 언약잡고 하나님 주신 말씀이 성취될 줄 믿습니다 하는 믿음으로 받게되면 하나님께서 나를 통해서 세계를 살리는 역사가 나타날 줄로 믿는다. 왜냐하면 말씀은 분명히 성취되니까. 제가 분명히 설교하는 도중에 겔 37 말씀에 마른 뼈가 말씀을 통해서 강한 군대가 되는 역사가 나타난다는 확신을 갖고있다. 왜냐하면 말씀에 기록되었기 때문에. 이 언약 잡으시기 바란다. 여러분 통해서 여러분 가문과, 지역이 살아난다. 고통 받는 자를 살릴 수 있다. 왜냐하면 우리는 세상 살릴 주인공이기 때문이다. 언약 잡은 자에게는 하나님 계획을 성취시키는 놀라운 뜻이 들어있다. 요셉, 모세, 여호수아, 바울이 받은 응답이 바로 우리가 받을 응답인 줄로 믿는다. 우리에게 주신 믿음의 요소 3가지를 붙잡고 승리하는 여러분 되시기 바란다.
결론
언약 잡은 여러분들에게 앞으로 나타날 말씀이다.
막 16:17-18 믿는 자들에게는 이런 표적이 따르리니 곧 그들이 내 이름으로 귀신을 쫓아내며 새 방언을 말하며. 18 뱀을 집어올리며 무슨 독을 마실지라도 해를 받지 아니하며 병든 사람에게 손을 얹은즉 나으리라 하시더라
이 말씀을 믿는 여러분들에게 분명히 이 증거가 나타나게될 줄로 믿는다. 하나님께서는 여러분들을 통해서 재창조의 역사를 이루시기를 기다리고 계시다. 누리시는 여러분 되시기를 예수 그리스도 이름으로 축원한다.

“1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”
Introduction
There was a huge earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean and thousands of people died because of that. We also know that there was a huge tsunami in Japan and it also killed many people as well. But later on, they conducted a research and it showed shocking news. Even though many people died, not one wild animal were affected. Why was that? Wild animals they are able to see and sense that a something was going to happen so they were avoid it but humans who are considered more intelligent, they were not able to avoid the problems even before animals. All of the wild animals were able to sense the earth problems. Why about humans then? Only mankind is able to see the catastrophes only before them and they cannot avoid the problem. I thought about this, what if we were animals? i would have pity and scoff at humans and think that they are nothing because they cannot believe what is in front of them. There are so many mankind who cannot see what is before them and cannot even believe what is before them. That is why today’s pulpit Biblical passage is really important. From here we will see the substance of faith from the biblical passage.
1. The Substance of Faith
1) Types of faith
Today’s Biblical passage is piggybacking off what was spoken from last week’s sermon in Hebrews 10:39 “But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” - The word of faith was spoken of 25 times in the book fo Hebrews which means that they were speaking very detailed regarding faith. before we speak about people of faith, we need to speak about the different types of faith. There are four types of faith. The first type of faith is believing in what we see. How have we obtained this faith? It is shown in Genesis 3:6 “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” - Mankind fell into temptation and sin, and they were tempted and believed in what was in front of them. They were tempted and believed in the fruit of evil that led tot he corruption of mankind. Secondly, the faith to believe in spiritual existence. Not only worldly things but when we become aware of spiritual existence, we are Abel to see the existence of God, Satan, demons, angels, and evil spirits. All religions believe in some sort of spiritual world. Even shamans believe in the existence of evil spirits. Also in buddhism and Hinduism also believe in some sort of spiritual existence such as evil spirit. It also applies to Islam. The third type of faith is the faith to believe in God’s word. Those who are believed, we are talking about. Those who believe in the cross of Jesus Christ. We believe in salvation and acceptance. We believe sin hell and heaven. We also believe that Jesus Christ resurrected and will come for a second coming. But there is a more advanced level of faith beyond that. That is the faith of those who are within the covenant. Those who are used for the fulfillment of the covenant. Sea r talking about those who are within the plan of God. They have the mission of God and have the faith of evangelists. Then, what about the faith that believes in the word of God?
2) Faith to believe in the Word
Verse 1 - Faith is believing in God’s word, that is believing in the substance. How can we know this? We can know through the word of God.
Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” - When this message becomes your message, then you are able to have faith that God sent us the offspring of woman to crush the head of the serpent. You are able to believe in this when you do this. Those who believe in this, they believe that the offspring of women did come and did crush the head of the serpent.
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” - When you look at the message, you are able to see that great works arose through the offspring of the woman which was it all took place through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Even though you may not realistically believe in it at that exact moment because it didn’t happen yet, you still believe and have absolute faith that this will happen in the future.
Exodus 3:18 “Then they will heed your voice; and you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, ‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us; and now, please, let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ ” - This was what God was telling Moses. God told Moses to tell pharaoh that they must go to the wilderness to give sacrifice to God. From here, to give sacrifice is meaning to give a blood sacrifice. This means that they were giving the blood sacrifice to save mankind. God gave this promise and we know that this was fulfilled on the cross. When Jesus Christ came, we can see in John 19:30 “So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” - The offspring of the woman that you were waiting for, Jesus Chirst, the promised Immanuel did come and did answer the problems of mankind. When you believe in the word of God and hold onto it, then that promise will absolutely be fulfilled. This is shows that faith is the substance of things that we hope for.
2. The Evidence of Faith
1) Elements of faith
When we continue to look at today’s Biblical passage, it says, “Evidence not seen” in verse 1. There is evidence of faith that we cannot see, what is that?
That is seen in 1 Peter 1:9 “Receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.” - Faith will also you receive salvation of your souls. Receiving evidence means that you will receive faith of your salvation. There is something that we must think about here. In order to find the dement of faith, there I something that we must remember.
James 2:19, 21-22 “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?” - Even demons believe that Jesus is the Son of God and believe in the truth of Jesus. What is absolute is that Jesus Christ did come as the Christ to solve the problems of mankind but why demons believe in that Jesus is the Son of God, then why can they not be saved? There is one reason why. They know the gospel but they have rejected the gospel. Even though Jesus Christ died on the cross, that had nothing to do with them. There are demons and evil sprigs who do that but there are even mankind have heard the gospel but there are some people who still reject the gospel. The cross fo the gospel becomes yours, then that is when you become saved. This is the blessing. Then what kind of faith must we have?
James 2:21-22 - The faith that we must have was written here. To Abraham, Issac was so precious and important to him but God ordered him to sacrifice Issac. Abraham didn’t question God’s command at all, he went to the mountain to sacrifice his son. He tied up his son and put him on the altar. This is what we are talking about today.
James 2:22 - “Do you see that faith was working together with his works?” - This shows how Abraham was able to sacrifice his son. Faith happens through your actions and when you have faith with your actions, that is when faith will show works and evidences. Then, what works alongside faith? It is the faith in and obedience of the word of God. God will take this perfect faith of yours and accept it.
The third element of faith is Luke 17:17-19 “So Jesus answered and said, 'Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?' 19 And He said to him, 'Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.' ” - This was when a leper person came to Jesus to heal him. Jesus did heal him with one word but all 10 of them were healed. 9 out of the 10 said they were healed and left Jesus but only one came back to Jesus. The words that Jesus spoke to the one person who came back to him was written in Luke 17:17-19 - We are talking about extremely important type of faith. All 10 of them prayed to Jesus and they were all healed. Just because you received answers to your propel that you have received salvation. Only one of them received salvation.
Luke 17:18-19 - The greatest thing within faith is to give glory to God. This shows how important faith is.
2) The testimony of the forefathers of faith
Verse 2 - Even our forefathers of faith also received evidences for their faith.
God called Abraham forward and gave him a message in Genesis 15:5-6 “Then He brought him outside and said, 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.' And He said to him, 'So shall your descendants be.' ” - This incident was what happened when Abraham arrived in the land of Canaan. God promised Abraham that he will give him a son but even after 10 years, the answer of a son was still not giving him a son. At that time, God gave him this message. From here, Abraham didn’t resent or complain to God for Him not giving him an answer. Even though he did’t receive an answer for 10 years, Abraham did believed that God will bless his generations and inheritance as numerous as the stars in the sky. When God saw Abraham’s faith, God called Abraham faith without faith and accredited as righteous. This was because Abraham had no doubt within God’s words. He took and hold of God’s word as it was and exactly as it was. This is very important. This is the characteristics between those who believe. They believe in the word exactly as it is. If you do this, then you are sincerely as a child of God. If you believe that it will happen exactly according to the word of God, then you are truly a blessed child of God. The forefathers of faith in the Bible all had this commonality.
Daniel 3:17-18 “If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.” - this was regarding Daniel’s three friends. They were ordered and commanded to bow and worship down to the idols. But all Daniel’s three friends all responded with the same response. If they don’t bow down to the idols, they were threatened that they will thrown into he furnace and burned alive. But at that time, they responded that they won’t bow down to the idols even if that is their fate. At that time, Daniel’s three friends held onto the word of the two commandments. They held onto the commandments of not worshipping idols and to not make any idols other than God. They obeyed God’s commandments even though they will face the fate of the death of fire. This is was the word of God that they held onto and kept.
Daniel 6:10 “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.” - At that time, this was an astounding event. If he told people that he was praying, he would’ve be thrown into he lions’ den but he continued to open his windows and prayed to God. This was giving glory to God. Do you think God was touched by this or not? God sent an angel that shut the lions’ mouth shut. This was the testimonies of our forefathers in faith. This is the faith that they had. I believe that we also possess this type of faith. We need to hold onto faith and be victorious. There is something else that is important, which is shown in verse 3.
3. The Power of Faith
1) The power of the Word
Verse 3 - The words that were continuously repeated in the book of Hebrews in chapter 11 was the word “by faith”. This shows the exact description of what faith is. The faith that we must believe in the world as created by God. The start of all faith starts with believing that God created the heavens and earth by the word of God. We are not just knowing of this fact but “so that this things…” - what does it mean it were not by the things who are visible? When the world was created, it was not created by blankness and nothingness. Why was is this important? At that time when the book fo Hebrews was written, the cosmology of great philosophy was a really popular idea back then. It even influenced the christians and the world at that time. With that philosophy, they tried to explain their faith in God.
According to the Hellenistic philosophy, that there was something else that already existed and through that “existence”, it created the world and the entire universe. In other words, it means that the world wasn’t created by nothingness but it was created by something that already existed. Even many philosophers and scientists still believe in this theory. Many scholars believe in the Big Bang theory. They believe that the world and the entire universe as create by a huge explosion. Earth was created, mankind and all living things were created through that “huge explosion.” Many people even still believe in this, the Big Bang theory as the truth. But there is something that they cannot solve and acknowledge even till this day. The question they can’t solve is, Who and what caused that explosion from the start? No one can explain that.
If you look at today’s message, “things wee seen were not made….” - Before creation, there were no living things. In other words, out of nothingness, God created Earth and the entire universe by the word of God. This is something that is unimaginable. The moment God commanded, “Let there be light and let there be…”, all things were created at that instant by His one command. This shows God’s power and the power of creation. How was this possible? This is possible because God is God. God is the God with the power of creation who created all things out of nothingness. He is our Father. How thankful should we be for this? If that is so, there is something that we must hold onto. There is something we as believers must hold onto.
2) The power of those who take hold of the covenant
Where is God who created the heavens and the Earth? He is within us. Do you believe in this? With that, we must hold onto the power of God who is the Creator. Do you believe in this? If we truly believe int his, then with the covenant, one person with the covenant can change and save the entire world. One person with the covenant, Joseph who hd the covenant, he saved his entire family line, the nation, and the entire world. Who made this possible? It was through God, the Creator. God who was with Joseph is within us now. If we hold onto the covenant, then tremendous works of power and the power of recreation will take place through you.
Exodus 14:14 “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” - Through Moses, God split the Red Sea and saved Israelites. It was all done through one person, Moses. God said that He will use Moses, the one person and that was all what God told Moses. If we hold onto the sure covenant, then we can save the en tire world. We must remember this.
Joshua 10:12-13 “Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: 'Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.' 13 So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.” - When Joshua prayed to God, God stopped the sun and the moon. This actually happened. Through one person’s prayer, God poured down the power of creation. This power is within us. Believe in this. Truly hold onto this.
Acts 19:21 “When these things were accomplished, Paul purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, 'After I have been there, I must also see Rome.' ” - Paul also held onto gods’ covenant. What did he hold onto? He held onto the covenant that he must go to Rome. When he held onto this covenant, God used Paul to save the entire world. God’s word that has the power of recreation, we are able to receive this same power through the Sunday pulpit message. With this covenant, pray and hold onto that the word will be fulfilled in your life. When you pray and hold onto this covenants hen God will use you to save the entire world. This is because God’s word will absolutely be fulfilled. Whenever I give sermon, I truly believe that the bones will come back to life just like it was proclaimed and spoken in Ezekiel 37. This is because it is recorded int he word of God, the Bible. Truly hold onto this covenant. Through you, your family line will be saved. Through you, your regions will be saved. Through you, people who are suffering will be saved. This is because sea re the main figures to save the world. We who have the covenant, God will fulfill his plans through you. The answer that the 7 remnants received wil become ours. We ned to hold onto the three elements of faith and take hold On It as our covenant.
Conclusion
We who have the covenant, the word will be fulfilled in our lives is written in Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” - Those who hold onto the word God, the same works will take place. God wants to show you great evidences and powers within your life. Let us enter into payer once again. Let us place our hands over our weaknesses once again and enter into prayer.
