“여호와의 남은 자"

1 그 날에 일곱 여자가 한 남자를 붙잡고 말하기를 우리가 우리 떡을 먹으며 우리 옷을 입으리니 다만 당신의 이름으로 우리를 부르게 하여 우리가 수치를 면하게 하라 하리라
2 그 날에 여호와의 싹이 아름답고 영화로울 것이요 그 땅의 소산은 이스라엘의 피난한 자를 위하여 영화롭고 아름다울 것이며
3 시온에 남아 있는 자, 예루살렘에 머물러 있는 자 곧 예루살렘 안에 생존한 자 중 기록된 모든 사람은 거룩하다 칭함을 얻으리니
4 이는 주께서 심판하는 영과 소멸하는 영으로 시온의 딸들의 더러움을 씻기시며 예루살렘의 피를 그 중에서 청결하게 하실 때가 됨이라
5 여호와께서 거하시는 온 시온 산과 모든 집회 위에 낮이면 구름과 연기, 밤이면 화염의 빛을 만드시고 그 모든 영광 위에 덮개를 두시며
6 또 초막이 있어서 낮에는 더위를 피하는 그늘을 지으며 또 풍우를 피하여 숨는 곳이 되리라
서론 Intro
어떤분 에게서 재밌는 칼럼 하나를 받았다. 스웨덴에 제니 린드 이라는 오페라 가수가 있었다. 그 사람은 지금으로부터 약 200년 전인 1820년에 태어난 세계적으로 유명한 성악가 였다. 그 사람이 하도 유명해 지니 미국에서 초청해 뉴욕으로 오게 되었다. 그녀가 뉴욕에 처음 도착했을때가 1850년 8월 이었다. 그 당시는 비행기가 없어서 배를 타고 뉴욕에 가게 된것이다. 항구에 도착한 그녀를 보기 위해 30만명 내지는 40만명 정도가 모였다고 한다. 그 정도로 유명한 사람이었다. 그러다 그녀는 뉴욕에 한 교회에 예배를 드리기 위해 참석했고 거기서 처음으로 복음을 듣게 된다. 그렇게 복음을 듣고 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접해 크리스천이 되었다고 한다. 그녀의 인기는 시간이 갈수록 계속 더해져가 그녀의 노래를 듣기위해 표가 경매에 까지 붙여졌다고 한다. 그렇게 그녀가 가는 곳곳 마다 사람들이 몰려들었고 많은 공연을 했다. 그러던 어느날 그 사람이 은퇴를 선언했다. 이유를 물었더니 그분이 이렇게 대답했다고 한다, 하루하루 지날수록 무대에 오르는 일 때문에 성경을 묵상할 시간을 갖지 못하고 있다. 이 세상 너머에 있는 하나님의 나라에 대해 생각할 시간이 전혀 없다. 내가 이것 말고 무엇을 더 원하겠나 라고 대답했다고 한다. 이 대답을 들었을때 참 올바른 신앙생활을 한 사람이구나 생각되었다. 지금 우리 교회도 말씀 통해 보좌의 축복 놓고 40일 동안 집중으로 묵상시간 갖고자 하고있다. 내가 원하는 기도제목 가지고 기도하는것 보다 말씀 그 자체를 가지고 묵상을 할때 깊은 기도가 되어진다. 말씀을 가지고 묵상할때 거기서 하나님의 음성을 들을수 있다. 그렇게 되면 거기서 하나님의 뜻을 발견할수 있다. 그래서 성경에 다윗도 그렇고 공통점이 묵상을 했다는것이다. 우리가 기도하는 모든 방향은 묵상 이기 때문에 그것 통해 얼마나 큰 응답 받을수 있는지 모른다. 그래서 말씀 드렸지만 묵상하는 시간은 천국을 누리는 시간이다. 여러분들도 그런 축복의 시간을 정말 가지시기를 바란다. 이 제니 린드 라는 사람이 그 축복을 누렸던것이다. 이것을 듣고 깜짝 놀랐다, 이 옛날에도 이렇게 올바른 기도하는 사람이 있었구나 놀라웠다.
1. 여호와의 싹 The Branch of the Lord
1) 유대멸망의 결과 The result of the destruction of Judah
사 Isaiah 4:1
습 Zephaniah 3:14
1절 말씀에 재밌는 말이 나온다,
“그 날에” 하나님의 멸망의 심판의 때를 이야기 한다, “일곱 여자가 한 남자를 붙잡고 말하기를 우리가 우리 떡을 먹으며 우리 옷을 입으리니 다만 당신의 이름으로 우리를 부르게 하여 우리가 수치를 면하게 하라” 하고 여자들이 말한다고 한다. 전쟁으로 인해 남자들은 다 죽고 여자들만 남겨진 상황을 말하는 것이다. 많은 여자들이 와서 우리가 당신을 남편으로 섬기고 먹을것도 다 해줄테니 와서 결혼만 해달라 하는것이다. 자식을 낳을수 있도록 남편만 되어달라 하는것이다. 여러분, 당시에는 자식을 낳지 못하는것을 수치로 여겼다. 여기서 이야기 하는것은 단순히 자기 배우자를 찾기 위한 외침이 아니라 중요한 메시지가 들어있다. 여기서 말하는 “이스라엘에 있는 딸” 은 누구를 의미하나? 스바냐서 3:14 말씀 보면 “시온의 딸아 노래할지어다 이스라엘아 기쁘게 부를지어다" 라고 나온다. 여기서 이스라엘 딸 이라는것은 이스라엘 나라를 의미 하는것이다. 이 전쟁으로 인해 많은 사람들이 죽게 되니 이스라엘에 심각한 문제가 온것이다. 모든 사람이 죽게 되니 이스라엘에 주신 언약이 끊기는 상황이다. 창3:15 부터 내려온 언약의 후손의 축복의 계보가 끊어질 위기에 처한것이다.
2) 여호와의 싹 The Branch of the Lord
사 Isaiah 4:2
이러한 심각한 위기에 빠진 때에 주신 말씀이다. 그 상황을 2절에 다시 이야기 한다, “그 날에 여호와의 싹이 아름답고 영화로울 것이요 그 땅의 소산은 이스라엘의 피난한 자를 위하여 영화롭고 아름다울 것이며". 하나님께서 여호와의 싹이 있다 라고 말씀하시는것이다. 여호와의 “싹”은 히브리어로 체마흐 (צֶמַח / tsemach) 로 sprout, branch 라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 이것은 무엇을 의미하냐면, 엄동설한에 얼어붙은 땅을 뚫고 나온 새싹 이라는 의미가 있다. 또한 죽은것과 같던 마른 가지에서 나온 새싹 이라는 의미도 있다. 그렇다면 여호와의 싹이 정확히 무엇을 의미 하는건가 이말이다. 어떤 사람들은 이 새싹이 메시야, 그리스도를 의미 한다고 말한다. 칼빈이나 다른 신학자들은 그리스도를 의미하는것이 아니다 라고 주장한다. 그렇다면 이것이 무엇을 의미하나. 여호와의 싹 이라는 것은 바로 남은자를 이야기 하고 있는것이다. 지금 이스라엘이 완전히 멸망당한 상황이다. 그런 상황에도 하나님 께서는 싹을 준비하고 계시다는것이다. 오늘 이야기 하고 있다, 다 멸망해도 여호와의 싹은 아름답고 영화로울것 이라는것이다. 그런데 그 싹이 누구냐, 말씀에 보면 그 땅에 솟아난 이스라엘에 피난한 자 를 말하는것이다. 지난 시간에도 역사를 이야기 했지만 기원전 BC 606년에 1차로 포로들이 잡혀갔고 그 때에 다니엘과 세친구가 잡혀간것이다. 이들이 처음 돌아온것이 그 이후로 딱 70년이 지난 BC 526 년에 고레스를 통해 1차 귀환이 된것이다. 그때 4만9천명 거의 5만명 가량 돌아온다. 수많은 사람들이 붙잡혀 갔지만 약 5만명밖에 돌아오지 못했다. 그 후에 2차 귀환은 BC 458년에 일어나는데 추가로 5,000 명 밖에 돌아오지 않는다. 출애굽할때 이스라엘 백성중 장정만 60만명 된다고 기록되어 있다. 그러니 그에 비하면 아주 적은 인원만 돌아온것이다. 그런데 그 돌아온 사람들이 아름답고 영화로운 모습이다 이 말씀 인것이다. 말씀에, “그 땅의 소산은 이스라엘에 피난한 자를 위하여 영화롭고 아름다울 것이며" 라고 나온다. 그 땅에 소산 이라 함은 그들이 와서 맺은 열매를 의미한다. BC 586년에 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕이 와서 성전을 완전히 파괴시킨다. 하나님의 언약의 말씀이 너무나 정확한것이, 성전이 파괴된지 딱 70년만인 BC 516년에 제2성전이 완공 하게 된다. 돌아왔던 사람들이 제일 먼저 한것이 성전을 다시 짓는것이다. 이 성전이 메시야 자신을 이야기 하는것이다. 하나님께서는 그걸 보고 말씀 하시는것이다, “그들의 소산은 이스라엘의 피난한 자를 위하여 영화롭고 아름다울 것이며”. 그들의 수고한 모든 믿음을 기뻐 하시면서 영광 받으시는것이다.
2. 하나님의 남은 자 The remnant of the Lord
1) 하나님이 준비 God's preparation

왕상 1 Kings 19:18
롬 Romans 11:5
3절에 보면 남은자들에 대한 이야기가 계속 나온다, “시온에 남아있는자 예루살렘에 머물러 있는 자 곧 예루살렘안에 생존한 자 중 기록된 모든 사람은 거룩하다 칭함을 얻으리니”. 그 성전에 남아 건축에 참여한 모든 사람들은 거룩하다 라고 칭함 받게 된것이다. 기록된 모든 사람들을 다 거룩하다 칭함받았다고 한다. 옛날에도 성에 들어와 있는 사람들의 이름을 등록하는 일종의 주민등록이 있었다. 우리나라도 한국 주민등록증이 있듯이 그들도 다 가지고 있었다. 그런데 그들이 전부 거룩하다 라는 말은 이 사람들이 모두 다 천국에 생명책에 기록된 사람들 이라는것이다. 하나님께서는 그들의 믿음을 모두 받으셨다는 말이다. 하나님의 남은자들이 와서 맺은 열매를 보고 하나님이 그들의 믿음을 받으시고 영광 받으신것이다. 여기서 우리가 남은자 라는 말을 꼭 붙잡으셔야 한다. 왕상 19:18 보면 엘리야가 모두 다 죽고 나 혼자 남았습니다 할때 하나님께서 그에게 하신 말씀이다. “내가 이스라엘 가운데에 칠천 명을 남기리니 다 바알에게 무릎을 굻지 아니하고 다 바알에게 입맞추지 아니한 자니라". 이 말씀 보게 되면 하나님께서 엘리야에게 너만 의롭다고 생각 하느냐, 너와 같은 믿음 가진 자가 7,000명이 있다, 하시는것이다. 이 사람들은 어떠한 믿음을 가졌나? 바알에게 무릎 꿇지도, 입 맞추지도 않은 7,000 명 이다. 이런 사람들이 남은자 렘넌트 들이다. 하나님께서는 이런 사람들을 준비 하셨다고 한다. 오직 그리스도 언약만 붙잡고 하나님만 바라보는 자 7,000 명을 남겨두셨다는 것이다. 잘못 생각하면 그냥 남은자, 젊은 사람들은 다 렘넌트야 라고 생각하기 쉬운데 성경에 나타나는 렘넌트들은 이 복음에 생명을 건 자들을 말한다. 롬 11:5에 사도바울이 이야기 한다, “그런즉 이와 같이 지금도 은혜로 택하심을 따라 남은 자가 있느니라." 지금도 오직 복음을 위해 생명 건 자들이 남아있다 이 말이다. 바로 그들이 남은자 라는 것이다.
2) 정결케 하심 Purged by the blood
사 Isaiah 4:4
하나님께서 예루살렘으로 돌아온 남은자들을 그냥 두지 않으시고 4절에 정결케 하시는것을 볼수가 있다, “이는 주께서 심판 하는 영과 소멸하는 영으로 시온의 딸들의 더러움을 씻기시며 이스라엘의 피를 그 중에서 정결케 하실 때가 됨이라." 심판하는 영은 악을 없애는 영을 말하고 소멸하는 영은 죄, 불신앙을 태워버리는것을 나타낸다. 왜 이러한 심판하는 영과 소멸하는 영을 보내시나 이 말이다. 그 이유는 이들로 오직 하나님, 오직 언약, 오직 말씀 속으로 들어가게 하시기 위해서 그렇다 이 말이다. 시온의 딸들의 더러움을 씻기며 예루살렘의 피를 그 중에서 정결하게 하실 때가 됨이라” 하나님께서 남은자로 오직의 신앙 가질수 있도록 인도 하신다는 말이다. 아브라함 생각하시기 바란다. 아브라함을 불러서 가나안땅으로 왔지만 하나님께서 처음부터 아브라함을 쓰신것은 아니다. 부르심을 받은지 25년이 지나고 난 다음에 아들을 바치시는 모습을 보고 이제야 네가 믿음 가진줄을 알았다 하신것이다. 오직 여호와 하나님 앞에 설때, 붙잡을때 그제야 네가 렘넌트다 말씀 하시는것이다. 이것이 하나님이 원하시는것이다, 오직 신앙이다. 우리 몸을 가지고 예를 들어보겠다. 우리 몸에 불필요한것이 있다 해보자. 예를 들어 암이 있다, 암은 우리 몸에 불필요 한것이다. 이 암세포가 우리 몸에 자라고 있다는 것은 무섭고 해로운 것이다. 이 암은 그런데 우리 몸에 영양분을 먹고 붙어 산다. 나와 함께 있고 내 몸에 붙어있는 이 암세포라는 일부가 결국 나를 죽게 할것이니 이것을 빨리 떼어 내어야 하는것이다. 내가 살기 위해서는 이것을 수술로 떼어내어야 한다. 이 암세포가 무엇이냐, 그것이 바로 우리 삶의 불신앙이다. 내가 살기 위해서는 빨리 이 불신앙을 떼어내어야 하는것이다. 그래서 오늘 말씀은 심판의 영, 소멸하는 영, 성령의 능력 통해 이것들을 제거 하시겠다는 것이다.
3. 남은 자의 축복 The blessing of those who remain
1) 정결케 된 자의 축복 The blessings of those who have been purged
사 Isaiah 4:5-6
출 Exodus 14:19-20
시 Psalm 121:6-7
성경에 나타나는 모든 렘넌트들은 바로 이러한 신앙을 가진 사람들 이었다. 그냥 적당히 신앙 가진 사람들이 아니었다는 것이다. 이러한 신앙 가진 렘넌트 들에게 어떠한 축복 주시느냐가 5-6절 말씀이다. “여호와께서 거하시는 온 시온 산과 모든 집회 위에 낮이면 구름과 연기, 밤이면 화염의 빛을 만드시고 그 모든 영광 위에 덮개를 두시며”. 하나님께서 어떠한 축복 주시나, “여호와께서 거하시는 온 시온산” 이라 함은 돌아온 사람들이 거하는 곳 이고 그곳에 하나님께서 함께 하신다는것이다. “모든 집회”라 함은 그들이 드리는 모든 예배 위에 함께 하시는것이다. 그곳에 불기둥 구름기둥으로 똑같이 역사 하시겠다 이것이다. 구름기둥과 불 기둥이 어떤 역사를 일으켰나. 출14:19-20에 “이스라엘 진 앞에 가던 하나님의 사자가 그들의 뒤로 옮겨 가매
구름 기둥도 앞에서 그 뒤로 옮겨”. 애굽 군대들이 쫓아오니 여호와의 사자가 구름기둥을 뒤로 옮겨 지켜 주는 모습이다. 그렇게 흑암이 틈타지 못하게 중간에 장벽을 친것이다. 20절 말씀 보면, “애굽 진과 이스라엘 진 사이에 이르러 서니 저쪽에는 구름과 흑암이 있고 이쪽에는 밤이 밝으므로 밤새도록 저쪽이 이쪽에 가까이 못하였더라”. 성경에 보면 남은자 렘넌트가 위험에 처할때 마다 하나님께서는 반드시 지키시고 인도 하신것을 볼수가 있다. 이 불기둥과 구름 기둥은 성전이 완성되고 난 뒤에는 성전 위에 항상 머물러 있었다고 나온다. 오늘 말씀 보게 되면 그 모든 영광위에 덮개를 두셨다고 했다. 하나님의 영광으로 완전히 덮힌것이다. 6절 말씀에 나온다, “ 6 또 초막이 있어서 낮에는 더위를 피하는 그늘을 지으며 또 풍우를 피하여 숨는 곳이 되리라.” 이렇듯 완전하게 지켜주시는것을 볼수가 있다. 시편 121:6-7 말씀 보면, “낮의 해가 너를 상하게 하지 아니하며 밤의 달도 너를 해치지 아니하리로다 여호와께서 너를 지켜 모든 환난을 면하게 하시며 네 영혼을 지키시리로다”. 다윗이나 시편 기자들은 이것을 체험 한것이다. 남은자들에게는 체험 할수 있는 축복을 주신다 이 말이다. 여기서 우리가 위기에 처하게 되면 시공간을 초월하는 축복의 역사가 나오게 되어있다. 다시 말씀 드리면 오직의 신앙을 갖게 되는 남은자의 축복 속에 들어가면 하나님께서 철저하게 지켜주시고 완벽하게 보호해 주신다. 어떻게 해서 이렇게 할수가 있나. 우리가 보좌의 축복 누리고만 있으면 이 속으로 들어갈수 있다. 이번 기회에 이러한 축복 정말로 받으시는 여러분 되시기를 바란다.
2) 우리를 부르신 이유 The reason God called us
막 Mark 3:13-15
행 Acts 1:14
롬 Romans 14:8
여기서 마지막으로 잡을것이 있다. 그렇다면 하나님께서 우리를 왜 남은자로 부르셨나 그 말이다. 마가복음 3:13-15에 부르신 이유가 나온다, “또 산에 오르사 자기가 원하는 자들을 부르시니 나아온지라 이에 열둘을 세우셨으니 이는 자기와 함께 있게 하시고 또 보내사 전도도 하며 귀신을 내쫓는 권능도 가지게 하려 하심이러라”. 이 언약 꼭 잡으시기를 바란다. 여러분들이 어떻게 부르심 받았나, 그 이유가 뭐냐. 하나님께서 여러분들을 원하셔서 그렇다. 하나님께서 여러분과 함께 하고 싶으셔서 그렇다. 그 뿐만이 아니라 전도도 하고 귀신을 내어 쫒는 권능을 주시기 위해 부르셨다 한다. 이 이유를 정확하게 알고 누리는 자가 남은자 이고 렘넌트 이다. 두번째 사도행전 1:14 이다. 마음을 같이 하여 오직 기도에 힘썼다고 한다. 오직 그리스도 위해 보좌의 축복 속으로 계속 들어가 누리는 자. 오직 복음 누리는 자. 보좌의 축복 누리는 자. 여기에 모든 축복이 나타나있다. 세번째는 로마서 14:8 이다, “우리가 살아도 주를 위하여 살고 죽어도 주를 위하여 죽나니 그러므로 사나 죽으나 우리가 주의 것이로다.” 우리의 삶의 목적은 오직 그리스도이다. 밥을 먹는것도 사업을 하는것도 공부 하는것도 오직 그리스도 때문이다. 이런 사람이 렘넌트다. 이러한 사람에게 엄청난 축복 있을줄을 믿는다.
결론 Conclusion
창 Genesis 28:15
말씀 맺겠다. 창 28:15 말씀 붙잡으시기를 바란다, “내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키며 너를 이끌어 이 땅으로 돌아오게 할지라 내가 네게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라 하신지라.” 저는 3,9,3 보좌의 기도와 묵상할때 얼마나 힘나는지 모른다. 하나님꼐서 나와 함께 하시고 너를 지키고 인도 하겠다. 그리고 너를 돌아오게 하겠다 하셨다. 네게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라 하셨다. 네가 이땅에서 해야 할 사명이 있는데 그것을 다할때 까지 결코 네 곁에서 떠나지 않고 항상 함께하겠다 하시는것이다. 얼마나 신나는 말인가. 나를 부르신 이유가 하나님의 뜻을 이루게 하기 위해서 인데 그것을 다 이룰때 까지 결코 내 곁에서 떠나지 아니하겠다 하시는것이다. 아, 나는 결국은 열매를 맺을수 밖에 없는 그런 축복 받은 사람이구나, 여러분들이 그런줄 믿는다. 여러분들에게 복음받게 하신 이유가 하나님께서 당신의 세우신 뜻을 이루게 하기 위해 이 축복의 자리에 앉히신것이다. 분명히 오늘 약속하신 말씀처럼 하나님이 우리에게 허락하신것 다 이루실때까지 우리를 떠나지 않으실것이다. 미안하지만 이렇게 될때까지는 절대 우리 마음대로 죽지도 망하지도 못할것이다. 왜냐, 그 뜻을 이루어야 하기 때문에. 이 사실 붙잡고 승리하시는 여러분 되시기를 축원한다.
The Remnant of the Lord (Isaiah 4:1-6)

“1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, 'We will eat our own food and wear our own apparel; Only let us be called by your name, To take away our reproach.' The Renewal of Zion 2 In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious; And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing For those of Israel who have escaped. 3 And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem. 4 When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning, 5 then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering. 6 And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.”
Introduction
There was a woman, Jenny Lind, who was a famous opera vocalist in the 1820s and he became so famous that America recruited him. She came to New York and when she first arrived, it was August 1850 and there were no airplanes so she had to arrive to New York on a ship. When she arrived at the harbor, there were 200 people who came to greet and see her. When she came to America, she participated in a worship service at a church and ended up hearing the gospel. She accepted Jesus Christ in her heart at that time and she became a complete Christian. At that time, her fame and popularity ended up growing more and more. People were wanting to see her concert so much that her tickets were all sold out and her tickets had to be auditioned. So many people gathered around wherever she went. But one day, she decided to retire and left the life of a singer. When people asked her why she retired she answered, “After many days passed, I don’t have time to meditate on the Bible while living as a singer. I don’t have time to think about the kingdom of God beyond this world. What more can I do?” So she retired. Lind’s confession truly shows the life of an upright life as a Christian. Right now, we have been speaking about the heavenly throne and the importance of the time of meditation. More than praying about your personal prayer topics, praying with the pulpit message and the word of God, you can enter into deep meditation. When you meditate on God’s word, then you can hear God’s voice. You can discover God’s plan from there. The people in the Bible, David always meditated on the word of God. Our entire focus on prayer is meditation so this is so important. I am sure I told you this but as I meditated on God’s word, I meditated on the kingdom of God. As you enter into deep meditation, you are able to experience heaven. May you experience this as well. This signer, Jenny Lim was able to experience this. I was so surprised to hear this person’s confession. There were people who had an upright Christian walk of faith. Today God has given us an important message.
1. The Branch of the Lord
1) The result of the destruction of Judah
Verse 1 - This was referring to the Day of the Judgment. Only women were left behind after the war because all of the men died. All of the women came and said that they will serve the remaining men as their husbands so they can bear children. When women didn’t have children back then, it was considered a shame. Back then, the women were referring to seeking after a spouse Biblically speaking. This scripture is very important. Who were the daughters of Israel referring to?
Zephaniah 3:14 “Sing, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!” - The daughters of Israel were referring to the nation of Jerusalem. At that time, during the war, many people died and put the land of Israel into great crisis. So many people died that the flow of the covenant of God was being cut off. The covenant of Genesis 3:15 needed to be passed onto generations to generations but people were dying so the covenant was being cut off too. During the crisis of a war, this message was given.
2) The Branch of the Lord
Verse 2 - God was speaking. The branch of the Lord is referring to the sprout of the Lord. What does this mean? The cold, hard floor of a ground during winter, a sprout will grow out of this hard, cold ground. This was what it was referring to. A new sprout from the ground was blossoming. What does the branch of the Lord refer to? All people refer to the branch of the Lord as the coming of the Messiah. But John Calvin was interpreting it as not the coming of the Messiah. Then what does it represent? The branch of the Lord is referring to the remaining ones. All of the Israelites were destroyed at that time. But at that time, God was preparing the branch of the Lord, the sprouts. Even if all perished and are destroyed, the branch of the Lord will be glorious and beautiful. What is the branch? It is referring to the people needed in, the refuge of Israel. It is referring to the refuge of Israel.
There was a captivity that happened in BC 606, Daniel and his three friends were captured. The return of the people of Israel started in 536 BC. 50,000 Israelites were able to return back to the land of Israel. The second return, only 5,000 Israelites were able to return. Within Israel, 600,000 soldiers were able to return back. It may seem like a lot but it was not a lot. The people who returned were considered beautiful and glorious to God.
Verse 2 - The fruit of the earth is referring to the fruit that they will bear. King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed all the temples but God’s word was so accurate, exactly 70 years later, the reconstruction of the temple took place. This showed the completion of God’s prophecy. The first thing that Israelites did after their return was to reconstruct the temple. They understood that the temple of God was God, the Messiah. That is why God called the remaining ones as beautiful and glorious.
2. The Remnant of the Lord
1) God's preparation
Verse 3 - God is receiving his glory after their return to Israel. It is speaking about those who remained in verse 3. All of those who participated in the reconstruction of the temple were considered holy by God and their names were recorded. Everyone who is recorded were considered as holy. When you look in the temple, you can see the names written on the wall. When you become a citizen of a nation, your name is registered within that nation. This was the same thing for the resurrection of the temple. The names of the people who were considered holy in the temple, they were considered as people who became citizens in heaven. God was acknowledging their citizenship in heaven. Their action and participation in the reconstruction of the temple was considered holy and glorious before God.
1 Kings 19:18 “Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” - When Elijah said that everyone was martyred and the only one who remained who believed in God, he was yelling out to God. This was hw God responded to Elijah. God was telling Elijah that he wasn’t the only one who remained, God said that He left 7,000 disciples and prepared in the fields. What kind of faith ddi these 7,000 disciples have? They did not bow down to the idol, Baal and never kissed this idol. These are the ones who remained as the remnants. God said that He prepared them. They held onto only the gospel and God's covenant and only looked up to God. These were 7,000 disciples left in the field. If you look at this incorrectly, you may interpret only the younger generation but remnants are considered as people who remain for God alone and keep hold of God’s covenant.
Romans 11:5 “Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” - Those who staked for the gospel, there are remnants like these in the field. These are people who are called remnants. These remnants, God did not leave them alone but God allowed the great works to arise to allow them to become holy and glorious before Him.
2) Purged by the blood
Verse 4 - The spirit of judgment is God’s wrath and to cast out evilness. Why would God send out the spirit of judgment and burning? So that people of God could turn to only God’s word and His covenant. God was guiding them with the spirit so that they can live for God alone. Think about Abraham. Abraham went to the land of Canaan but God did not use Abraham from the beginning. Even after calling him 25 years earlier, God started only using him after God commanded Abram to sacrifice his son, Isaac and Abraham was willing to satiric his son. When Abraham did this, God was able to see that Abraham was willing to seek after rGod alone. God wants your only devotion and sacrifice. Let us use our body as an example. If there is something harmful in our body like cancer, then our cancer cells will grow and multiply, which is very dangerous and scary. Then, it will feed off our nutrients within our body. Since it is part of our body, it will pose harm and threat to our body then we need to get rid of those cancer cells. What does this mean? This is referring to our unbelief. In order to survive, we must get rid of and discard our unbelief. That is why today’s sermon says that we can discard our unbelief through the spirit of burning and judgment. The remnants had this kind of faith. They didn’t have a light state of faith. In order to become a remnant, what kind of blessings did God give to His remnants?
3. The Blessing of Those Who Remain
1) The blessings of those who have been purged
Verse 5 - The blessings that God gave was preparing the land of Zion, where all of the remnants who gathered and came together. That is where God is. God promised that he will be with us through worship services. God will continue to work through us through the pillars of clouds and fire. What does the pillars of fire and clouds mean?
Exodus 14:19-20 “And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.” - When the Egyptian army was chasing after them, the pillars of fire and clouds came behind the Israelites to protect them. When you look at the Bible, whenever remnants experienced times of crises, God always protected them. God’s glory was completely covering the remnants.
Verse 6 - God completely protects you.
Psalm 121:6-7 “The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.” - For David and the remnants in the Bible, they experienced this. The remnants experienced this great blessing and we as remnants can enjoy this blessing. From here, even in crises, we possess the blessing to transcend time and space. When we possess the faith of only and stand as remnant, then God will completely protect and guide you. Then, how can we know of this? God has given us something precious. If we just enjoy the heavenly throne, then God will give you these answers. May you receive these blessings and answers.
2) The reason God called us
Then, why did God call us remnants?
The reason is written in Mark 3:13-15 “And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons.” - Hold onto this covenant firmly. What is the reason why God called you? God called you because He wanted you. God wanted to be with you so that is why He called you. He also called you to give you the power to preach and to cast out darkness. If we know these reasons then we can enjoy this and enjoy the life of a remnant.
Acts 1:14 “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.” - Enjoy only Christ and the kingdom of God. Enjoy only the gospel. Enjoy only the heavenly throne. All blessings come from here.
Romans 14:8 “For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” - Our focus and purpose of our life is for Christ alone. We eat for Christ. We live for Christ alone. We do our business for Christ alone. We study for only Christ. A type of person who lives like this is a remnant. May you receive tremendous blessings.
Conclusion
Hold onto Genesis 28:15 “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” - Whenever I meditate on this biblical scripture during our 40-day challenge, I receive so much grace and I am so happy. God promised that He will be with us and be with us wherever we go. God promised that He will never leave us until He has completed His mission within us. This is God’s promise to us. This is such a strengthening scripture. God called us to fulfill His mission but God promised that He will never us until His mission is fulfilled. Then, we have no choice but to bear great fruits. This is the blessing that we possess. I truly believe that you possess this great blessing. The fact that you possess the gospel, it is so that we can experience God’s great blessings. Just like today’s scripture and message, God promised that He will never us. Until then, we cannot die, I am sorry to say that. We can never perish and be destroyed until God’s mission is fulfilled. May you be victorious in the name of Jesus Christ.
