언약을 깨닫지 못하는 자(히3:7-11)
서론
지난주간에 1부예배 가운데서 간증을 들은 것을 기억하실 것이다. 그 중 하나가 집사님의 딸이 정신적으로 어려움을 당하고 있었다고 했다. 이상한 소리를 질러서 심방을 했는데 가서 앉혀놓고 예배를 드렸다. 예배를 다 드렸는데 전혀 변화가 없었다. 이상한 분위기가 있었는데 집사님의 권유로 집에 돌아왔다. 돌아오는 과정 가운데 마음에 확신이 왔다. 분명히 주님께서는 들으시고 마귀도 들었을 것이라는 확신이 왔다. 그래서 그 확신이 와서 전화를 걸어서 어떻게 되었는지 물었다. 그랬더니 더 심해졌다고 했다. 조금 있다가 전화가 오더니 목사님이 더 심해져서 정신병원에 데리고 가야겠다고 이야기했다. 그럴 때 조금 더 기다려봐라 하고 이야기했다. 정신병원에 가지 않고 조금 더 기다렸는데 다시 연락이 왔다. 깨끗하게 치유가 되었다고 연락이 왔다. 그러면서 귀신이 나가면서 뭐라고 얘기를 하고 나갔다고 했다. 왜 나한테 그리스도 이야기를 하느냐고 소리를 지르며 나갔다고 한다. 어떤 사람이 들으면 도저히 믿기지 못할 일이 생긴 것이다. 그런데 저는 이것을 분명히 믿는다. 저도 이런 경험이 있기 때문이다. 한국에서 친구 분인이 우울증에 걸려서 고통을 당하고 있었다. 그런데 그에게 그리스도만 정확하게 증거했는데 우울증이 치료가 되었다. 분명히 그것은 내 능력과는 상관이 없었다. 사모님도 그런 경험이 있다. 지금 옛날에 한 집사님의 부인이 우울증을 심하게 앓았었다. 복음을 전해서 예수님을 영접시켰다. 그 순간에 치유가 되어서 밤에 문열고 청소도 하고 했었다. 이것이 무엇을 의미한느가. 이것은 그리스도께서는 실질적으로 선포되는 순간에 역사가 이루어진다. 남들이 보면 도저히 이해가되지 않지만 선포하는 순간에 그를 장악하고 있는 흑암의 권세를 물러갈 수 밖에 없다. 하나님 말씀은 살아있고 실질적으로 능력이 있다. 오늘 말씀에도 중요한 말씀이 나타난다.
1. 성령의 음성
1) 성경의 사건
히 3:7 그러므로 성령이 이르신 바와 같이 오늘 너희가 그의 음성을 듣거든
여기서 성령이 이르신 바와 같이 라는 것은 성경에 기록된 것과 마찬가지로 하는 의미를 갖고있다. 성경은 성령에 의해서 기록된 것이기 때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 성령께서 이르셨다는 것은 하나님이 지금 나에게 주신 음성이라는 것이다.
고전 10:11 그들에게 일어난 이런 일은 본보기가 되고 또한 말세를 만난 우리를 깨우치기 위하여 기록되었느니라
구약에 기록된 모든 사건은 우리에게 본보기가 되기 위해서 주셨다는 것이다. 우리를 깨우치기 위함이라는 것이다. 그 말씀이 그대로 똑같이 성취된다는 것이다. 오늘 너희가 그의 음성을 듣거든 하면서 말씀이 나오고 있다. 이 말씀은 히브리서를 쓰는 당시에 저자가 유대인출신 그리스도인에게 하는 말씀이다. 그냥 말씀하는 것이 아니라 1500년 전 광야 시절에 일어났던 사건을 오늘 너희에게 주시는 하나님의 음성이라고 말하는 것이다. 그렇다면 1500년 전에 히브리서 기자가 쓰던 사건과 그 때 쓰던 그 말씀도 2천년이 지난 지금도 똑같이 적용이 된다는 것이다. 대단히 중요한 의미를 갖고있다. 사건에는 분명히 시작이 있고 끝이 있다. 결과가 있었다. 그러면 같은 문제가 생긴다면 그에 대한 답은 분명히 성경에 있다는 것이다. 말씀을 잡게되면 그에 대한 답은 잡고 시작할 수 있다는 것이다. 그러므로 우리가 이 마음으로 말씀을 잡게되면 살아있는 말씀으로 나에게 적용될 줄로 믿는다. 그러면서 유대출신 기독교인들에게 말한다.
2) 완고한 신앙
히 3:8 광야에서 시험하던 날에 거역하던 것 같이 너희 마음을 완고하게 하지 말라
지금 유대출신의 기독교인들이 마음을 완고하게 해서 하나님을 떠나려는 사람이 었었던 것이다. 그래서 광야시절에 출 17:7 말씀을 인용하여 말씀하고 있는 것이다.
출 17:7 –그들이 여호와를 시험하여 이르기를 여호와께서 우리 중에 계신가 안 계신가 하였음이더라
모세에게 그 때 광야에 있었던 사람들이 다투면서 물을 달라고 했다. 하나님이 살아계시다면 물을 만들어내라 하면서 하나님을 시험했다. 모세나 하나님 앞에서는 기가막힌 사건이 일어났었다. 얼마나 기가 막혔던지 오늘 10절 말씀이 항상 마음이 미혹되었다고 나온다.
히 3:10 그러므로 내가 이 세대에게 노하여 이르기를 그들이 항상 마음이 미혹되어 내 길을 알지 못하는도다 하였고
항상이라는 것은 사사건건 일이 생길때 마다 마음이 미혹되었다는 것이다. 내 길을 알지 못하는도다. 그럴 때 마다 하나님은 계속 참으시면서 인내와 사랑으로 답을 주셨다. 응답을 받고있음에도 불구하고 계속 불평, 원망을 이야기했다. 그래서 하나님께서 너무 화가 나셔서 말씀하셨다.
히 3:11 내가 노하여 맹세한 바와 같이 그들은 내 안식에 들어오지 못하리라 하였다 하였느니라
민수기 14:30 말씀이 그대로 적용된 것이다.
민 14:30 –내가 맹세하여 너희에게 살게 하리라 한 땅에 결단코 들어가지 못하리라
이 말씀대로 실제 열 정탐꾼을 따라갔던 모든 사람들은 다 광야에서 죽고 여호수아와 갈렙만 들어간 것을 알고있다. 여기서 우리가 중요한 것을 잡아야겠다. 왜 이사람들이 그랬는가. 신앙생활에 뭔가 착각을 하고 있다. 하나님께서 왜 이스라엘 백성들은 애굽에서 광야로 인도하셨는가. 엄청난 열가지 재앙을 일으켜가시면서 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성을 인도하셨다. 이스라엘 백성들이 똑똑하고 뛰어나서 그랬는가? 그들을 인도했던 것을 하나님께서 아브라함과 맺었던 그리스도의 언약 때문에 그렇게 인도하신 것이다. 하나님께서 그 언약을 성취하시기 위해서 그렇게 이스라엘 백성들을 건져내신 것이다. 우리가 항상 잡아야할 것은 하나님의 절대언약이 있다는 것이다. 하나님께서 아브라함과 맺은 절대언약, 그리스도의 언약이 있었던 것이다.
2. 하나님의 언약
1) 하나님의 절대언약
창 22:13 보게되면 아브라함이 자기 아들 이삭을 번제로 바치기 위해서 제단위에 올려놓았었다.
창 22:13 아브라함이 눈을 들어 살펴본즉 한 숫양이 뒤에 있는데 뿔이 수풀에 걸려 있는지라 아브라함이 가서 그 숫양을 가져다가 아들을 대신하여 번제로 드렸더라
하나님께서는 그 순간에 아브라함와 네 아들을 손대지 마라 하고 말리셨다. 그리고 그 소리를 듣지마자 주위를 살펴보니 숫양이 뿔이 수풀에 걸려있었다. 그래서 이 아브라함은 그 숫양을 가져다가 아들을 대신해서 번제를 드렸다. 이것은 놀라운 언약을 우리에게 전달해주신 것이다. 대속의 언약을 심어주신 것이다. 인간 대신해 어린양되신 그리스도께서 오셔서 죽으실 것을 가르치신 것이다. 이것을 아브라함에게 약속하셨다. 두번째 보면 22장 14절 말씀이 나타난다.
창 22:14 아브라함이 그 땅 이름을 여호와 이레라 하였으므로 오늘날까지 사람들이 이르기를 여호와의 산에서 준비되리라 하더라
여기서 여호와 이레라는 말씀이 나타난다. 하나님께서 준비하셨다는 것이다. 무엇을 준비하셨는가. 그 땅의 이름을 여호와 이레라고 했다. 인간의 근본 문제를 해결하실 땅을 준비하셨다는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 하나님께서는 이삭을 위해서 양을 준비하셨다. 여호와의 산에서 준비되리라 하더라 하고 말하고 있다. 인간의 근본문제를 해결할 제물을 준비하셨다는 것이다. 앞으로 그리스도께서 오셔서 우리 문제를 해결하실 거라는 것이다. 바로 가나안 땅에 준비되었다는 것이다.
창 22:17 –네 씨가 그 대적의 성문을 차지하리라
네 씨라 하는 것은 그리스도를 나타낸다. 그리스도가 사단의 성을 무너뜨릴 것이라는 말씀이다. 다시 말씀드리면 창 3:15을 성취하실 것이라는 말이다. 여자의 후손이 뱀의 머리를 깰 것이라는 말씀이 예수 그리스도의 죽음을 통해서 성취될 것이라는 말이다. 하나님의 절대언약이다. 하나님의 모든 관심은 절대언약에 있다. 그런데 이스라엘 백성들이 이것을 깨닫지 못했다. 왜 가나안 땅에 가려고 하는지, 왜 거룩한 성도 입장에서 깨끗한 신앙을 갖고 가야하는지를 모르는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 가나안 땅 가는 것은 하나님의 절대계획이다.
2) 하나님의 절대계획
민 14:22 내 영광과 애굽과 광야에서 행한 내 이적을 보고서도 이같이 열 번이나 나를 시험하고 내 목소리를 청종하지 아니한 그 사람들은
무슨 사건만 생기면 불평, 불만, 원망만 하고 있었다. 증거를 보여주고 물을 달라면 물을 주고 고기를 달라면 고기를 줬는데 사건만 생기면 불평했다. 우리도 도와주는데도 항상 불평 원망만 하면 정말 화가난다. 하나님도 그랬을 것 같다. 너무나 화가 나셔서 출 32:10에 모세에게 말씀하신다.
출 32:10 그런즉 내가 하는 대로 두라 내가 그들에게 진노하여 그들을 진멸하고 너를 큰 나라가 되게 하리라
하나님께서 그냥 모세보고 너를 통해 강한 나라를 세우리라 하신 말씀을 두 번이나 하셨다.
민 14:12 내가 전염병으로 그들을 쳐서 멸하고 네게 그들보다 크고 강한 나라를 이루게 하리라
너무나 화가 나셔서 하나님께서 말씀하셨다. 화가 나신 이유를 보겠다.
3. 언약의 여정
1) 전도자의 기도
출 32장에 나타나는 것은 모세가 시내산에 올라간 사이에 이스라엘 백성들이 금송아지로 신을 만들었었다. 금송아지를 만들어서 경배하면서 춤을 추면서 이것이 우리 신이다 하고 예배를 드렸다. 하나님께서 너무나 화가 나셨다. 하나님을 멸시하는 행위이다. 그렇게 인도하여주셨음에도 경배하고 영광돌릴 생각은 안하고 우상을 만들어서 절하고 있다. 우상을 숭배하는 모습을 보면서 내가 다 저를 멸해버리고 너를 통해서 다시 하겠다는 것이다. 또 민 14장에 나타나는 말씀은 정탐꾼 중에 열 명이 돌아와서 말했다. 가나안은 너무나 장대하고 커서 우리가 상대할 수 없다. 우리가 가면 칼에 맞아죽는다. 우리 차라리 애굽으로 돌아가자고 했다. 하나님께서는 너무나 화가 나셨다. 가나안 땅 가는 것이 하나님의 계획인데 애굽으로 다시 돌아가자는 것이다. 언약을 대적하는 것이다. 언약을 가로막고 있는 것이다. 그러니까 내가 그들을 다 멸해버리고 너를 통해서 큰 나라를 만들겠다 하시는 것이다. 이것은 순종하지 아니하는 이스라엘 백성들이 없으면 일이 안되는가? 없다하더라도 언제든지 새롭게 시작할 수 있는 분이라는 것이다. 그래서 하나님께서는 모세에게 너하고 나하고 다시 시작하자고 말씀하셨다. 이 이야기를 했을 때 모세가 어떻게 반응했는가. 저는 이 말씀을 보면서 모세가 하나님 앞에 사랑 받았던 이유를 알 수 있었다. 모세의 기도가 나온다. 우리 전도자가 이런 기도를 할 수 있어야겠다는 마음이 들었다.
출 32:32 그러나 이제 그들의 죄를 사하시옵소서 그렇지 아니하시오면 원하건대 주께서 기록하신 책에서 내 이름을 지워 버려 주옵소서
참 놀라운 기도이다. 상상할 수 없는 기도이다. 내가 너를 통해 큰 나라를 만들겠다 했을 때 하나님 뜻대로 하옵소서 한 것이 아니라 저들을 용서해주세요 그렇지 아니하시려면 천국에 있는 생명책에서 내 이름을 지워주세요 했다. 모세가 백성들의 영혼을 향한 뜨거운 사랑을 느낄 수 있다. 이것은 우리 전도자가 꼭 가져야할 마음인 줄로 믿는다.
민 14:19 구하옵나니 주의 인자의 광대하심을 따라 이 백성의 죄악을 사하시되 애굽에서부터 지금까지 이 백성을 사하신 것 같이 사하시옵소서
하나님께서는 탄식하면서 하신 말씀이 열 번이나 증거를 줬는데 내 말을 거역하고 불평 불만을 하고 있지 않느냐 하셨다. 하나님께서 그들이 원하는 것을 다 채워주셨었다. 이것이 하나님의 사랑이었다. 기도하는 그것을 다 받으시면서 다 응답해주셨다. 아무리 못되도 기도하면 다 응답하시는 하나님의 놀라운 사랑을 발견할 수 있다. 모세는 그것을 붙잡은 것이다. 지금까지 그렇게 응답해주시지 않으셨습니까. 그러니 이 백성들을 다시 한 번 용서해주세요 하고 기도하는 것이다. 이 한 사람의 중보기도를 통해서 그것도 응답해주시는 하나님이 자비하심을 발견할 수 있다. 더군다나 영혼을 사랑하는 기도는 하나님께서 외면하지 못하신다. 하나님께서는 모세에게 마음껏 맡기시고 쓰기는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 모세와 같은 기도를 신약에 보면 사도바울도 했다.
롬 9:3 나의 형제 곧 골육의 친척을 위하여 내 자신이 저주를 받아 그리스도에게서 끊어질지라도 원하는 바로라
사도바울이 자기 동족들이 멸망을 받는 모습을 바라보면서 내가 저주를 받아서 그리스도께서 끊어진다고 하더라도 저들이 구원받기 원합니다 하고 말하는 것이다. 그렇구나 사도바울이 이렇게 영혼을 사랑하는 뜨거운 마음이 있었기 때문이 크게 쓰셨구나 하는 것을 생각해보았다. 왜 이렇게 모세나 사도바울은 뜨거운 마음으로 하나님께 간구하는가? 언약을 깨닫지 못한 사람들에게 내리는 어마어마한 어려움을 너무나 알기 때문에 안타까운 마음으로 기도하고 있는 것이다. 우리가 가장 중요한 것은 언약을 어떻게 잡느냐이다. 어떤 응답보다도 올바른 언약을 잡았느냐 아니냐는 너무 중요하다. 이스라엘 백성들이 많은 응답을 받았지만 사실 그 응답은 하나님이 원하시는 응답이 아니었다. 하나님께서 진정 원하시는 응답은 언약을 성취하는 현장에 있었다. 그래서 지금 우리가 다시 한 번 언약의 여정을 붙잡아야겠다.
2) 언약의 여정
저는 언약의 여정 CVDIP를 항상 놓고 기도하고 있다. 내 언약을 갈 2:20이다.
갈 2:20 내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라 이제 내가 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 사랑하사 나를 위하여 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이라
나는 예수 그리스도를 영접했기 때문에 이제 하나님의 자녀다. 나를 그동안에 지배했던 사단의 권세는 떠났다. 과거의 나의 삶은 죽어버렸다. 이제 사는 것은 과거의 내가 아니요 이제는 그리스도께서 사시는 것이다. 이제 내 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 위하여 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이다. 나를 위하여 십자가에서 삼직을 행하신 그리스도를 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이다. 나의 비전은 롬 12:1-2이다.
롬 12:1-2 그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라 2 너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라
우리는 예배를 드릴 때에 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 산제물로 나를 드려야겠다. 제물이라는 것은 죄인들의 죄를 대신 짊어지시고 책임지는 것이다. 힘들어하고 고통받고 죄에 빠진 자들을 위해서 힘써 기도하는 것에 모든 방향을 맞춘 삶을 나타낸다. 그 제물은 하나님께 향기가 된다. 그것은 하나님께 영광돌리는 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 목숨을 다하여 하나님을 사랑하는 마음으로 예배를 드리는 것이다. 이것 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 영적예배이다. 나의 드림이다.
행 20:24 내가 달려갈 길과 주 예수께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치려 함에는 나의 생명조차 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니하노라
하나님께서 놀랍게 우리에게 복음을 전할 수 있는 사명을 주셨다. 이 복음을 증언하는데 있어서는 내 생명조차 조금도 아끼지 아니하고 하나님께 영광돌리길 원한다. 이미지이다.
롬 14:8 우리가 살아도 주를 위하여 살고 죽어도 주를 위하여 죽나니 그러므로 사나 죽으나 우리가 주의 것이로다
우리는 이미 과거가 죽었기 때문에 우리의 생명은 이미 주님 것이다. 나의 생명을 주님것이 될 수 있도록 축복하셨으니 감사를 드린다. 앞으로의 삶이 주를 위해서 살고 주를 위해서 죽을 수 있도록 축복하옵소서. 나의 작품이다.
렘 33:2-3 일을 행하시는 여호와, 그것을 만들며 성취하시는 여호와, 그의 이름을 여호와라 하는 이가 이와 같이 이르시도다. 3 너는 내게 부르짖으라 내가 네게 응답하겠고 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라
우리가 하나님 앞에 가장 기다리는 응답이 무엇인가. 방금 말씀드린 갈 2:20, 롬 12:1-2, 행 20:24, 렘 33:2-3이 성취되는 응답을 기다리는 것이다. 이것을 놓고 우리는 부르짖어야할 줄로 믿는다. 하나님께서는 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라고 하셨다. 이 말씀이 그대로 성취되는 축복의 역사가 나에게 작품으로 나타날 줄로 믿는다.
결론
우리는 최고의 응답이 무엇인가 점검해보아야겠다. 세상 사람들은 세상 성공하는 것, 재벌이 되는 것을 성공이라고 말한다. 그것이 되면 최고 응답을 받았다고 좋아한다. 우리가 원하는 것은 그것이 아니다. 우리가 원하는 것은 여호와께서 나와 함께하시는 응답을 받는 것이다. 이것을 놓고 기도하는 것이다. 어떤 어려움도 과정에 지나지 않는다. 언약을 이루어가는 과정에 이런 일, 저런 일이 생길 수 있다. 우리에게 가장 큰 응답은 하나님께서 함께하시는 것이다. 창 39:3 축복을 받는 여러분 되시기 바란다.
창 39:3 그 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통케 하심을 보았더라
이 축복의 역사가 여러분들에게 나타나기를 원한다. 범사에 이 축복 누리는 여러분 되시기를 축원한다.
Those Who Do Not Realize the Covenant (Hebrews 3:7-11)

“ 7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, 9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10 Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ 11 So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
Introduction
There was a testimony I heard regarding a deacon’s daughter who was experiencing difficulties and a mental illness. The daughter was hearing strange voices and was requested by the family for the pastor to come see her their daughter. The pastor came to the house to give worship services but even though the pastor kept coming to the house to visit the daughter and family, there were no changes taking place. The deacon just requested for the pastor to leave the house since no change was taking place but as the pastor was driving home, he felt assurance that God was hearing the worship services as well as Satan. With that assurance, he called the family and deacon back again, and asked how her daughter was. The deacon stated that her daughter was getting worse to the point where she wanted to admit her to the mental hospital. But, the pastor recommended the deacon to wait a little bit before she decided to take her daughter to the mental hospital. The deacon decided to follow the pastor’s words and waited, and called the pastor again later to tell him that her daughter was completely healed. When the demon was departing from the daughter, the demon said something, “Why are you telling me about Jesus Christ?!” and yelled out and left the daughter. When I heard this, I truly believed that this was a real event because I have had personal experiences of this myself. I had a friend and my friend’s wife was experiencing severe depression and all I did was testify of the name of Jesus Christ to her correctly, and her depression was completely healed. None of this happened due to my own powers. I am sure that the pastor experienced this. There was another deacon that I knew who also was suffering from severe depression but when she accepted Christ, at that moment, she was healed instantly and able to start her life anew. What does all of this mean? This means that the moment the name of Jesus Christ is proclaimed, works and healing takes place. This is something that nonbelievers can’t understand but when the gospel is proclaimed, the darkness has no choice but to flee at that moment. This is a very important message. This shows that God’s Words are alive, active, and working. Today’s scripture is as important.
1. The Voice of the Holy Spirit
1) The incident in the Bible
Verse 7 - What does this verse mean? This means as the Scripture, the Word of God says. This is because the Bible was written through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This means that the Words of God is the voice of God. We need to hold onto this message very well.
1 Corinthians 10:11 (“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”) - The reason why the Word of God was written in the Old Testament was not just written with no purpose and reasoning at all but it was all written so that the works that took place in the Old Testament can be repeated and take place within our lives. The Word of God was written to wake us up. What does this mean? This means that the Word of God will absolutely be fulfilled.
Verse 7 - “Today, if you will hear His voice” - This Word was written during the time when the book of Hebrews was written but this Word was directed towards the Jewish Christians. The author of this scripture was saying that the Words of God that were spoken 1,500 years ago was not the Words of the past but it is the Word of God that is being proclaimed to them at that moment, to the Jewish Christians. If that is so, the Words of God that were spoken and proclaimed 1,500 years ago is still being fulfilled today. This means that this is very important. With all incidents and events, there is a beginning and an end. If we have problems, then there is an answer in the Bible. If we look at the Bible, then we can find answers and hold onto those answers. With that, we need to take the Word of God within our hearts and when we do that, then we can experience the living Word being fulfilled within our lives.
2) Hardened faith
Verses 8-11 - This was the message that was given to the Jewish Christians. The Jewish Christians were about to leave God and had hardened their faiths while in the wilderness after they left Egypt.
Exodus 17:7 (“So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, 'Is the Lord among us or not?' ”) - The people in the wilderness asked for water from Moses and were complaining. They said that If God was alive, then they would be given water so they were demanding water from Moses. God and Moses were so flabbergasted when they heard the constant grumblings and complaints from the Israelites.
Verse 10 - They were always being deceived when they faced problems and tribulations. They didn’t know God’s ways and didn’t keep His ways. God always gave them answers and His love during times of problems. Even though they were experiencing answers and received everything that they needed, they kept on complaining and grumbling.
God was so angry with their actions and behaviors that He forbade them from entering His rest, and God’s resolution of this was written in Numbers 14:30 (“Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.”) - According to this Word, everyone who tried to enter the land of Canaan all died in the wilderness and only Caleb and Joshua were able to enter into the land of Canaan. We need to look at this carefully. Why were they like this? They had misunderstandings regarding their walk of faith. Why did God lead the Israelites from Egypt into the land of Canaan? God led the Israelites out of Egypt and allowed them to experience the 10 miracles so that they could go to the land of Canaan. Did God do this because the Israelites were intelligent or great people? It was because God was fulfilling the promise and covenant that He made between Abraham. In order to fulfill His promise, God brought the Israelites out of suffering. What we need to hold onto always is that there is always an absolute plan and covenant of God in everything.
2. God's Covenant
1) God's absolute covenant
Just like God who gave Abraham the absolute covenant, we also need to find God’s absolute covenant.
Genesis 22:13, 14, 17 (“Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, 'In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.' 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.”) - Abraham laid Isaac on the rock to sacrifice him but before Abraham almost killed Isaac, God commanded Abraham to not harm or kill his son. At that moment, God provided Abraham a ram to be sacrificed on the behalf of Isaac. This is a very important covenant that was relayed to us. This is the mystery of the ramson. This would foreshadow Jesus Christ who would die for us, die on our behalf on the cross. This was what God promised Abraham.
The second covenant given to Abraham was Genesis 22:14 - It said here, “The Lord Will Provide”, this means that God will provide. What did God provide? It said in Genesis 22:14 that, “Abraham called the name of the place, the Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, ‘In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’ ” - God provided the land that will solve the fundamental problems of mankind. Not only that but God provided the sacrifice on the behalf of Isaac.
“ ‘In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’ ” - In order to solve our fundamental problems, God provided a sacrifice, which was Jesus Christ who would solve our fundamental problems. This was prepared in the land of Canaan.
Genesis 22:17 - “Nissi” is referring to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ will destroy the powers and kingdom of Satan. In other words, this is saying that it will fulfill the covenant of Genesis 3:15 (“And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”). This is referring to the covenant that the offspring of the woman will crush the head of the serpent. It will fulfill this covenant. Jesus Christ will fulfill this covenant. This was God’s absolute plan. Where is God’s concern? It is towards His absolute covenant. This was what the Israelites failed to understand and see. They didn’t understand why they had to go into the land of Canaan. They didn’t know why they had to have a clear, pure heart and faith when they entered the land of Canaan. Within the land of Canaan, there was God’s absolute covenant of the cross but they failed to see this.
2) God's absolute plan
Numbers 14:22 (“Because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice.”) - Whenever problems arose, all the Israelites did was just complain and grumble. Even though God gave them water and food when they asked for it, they still continued to complain and grumble. There are people who continue to complain and grumble even though you help them out, imagine how frustrated you may feel when they act so ungrateful like that. I am sure God felt the same way.
God was so angry that He said in Exodus 32:10 (“Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.”) - God promised that He would raise up Moses to become a great nation and said this two times.
The second time was shown in Numbers 14:12 (“I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they. ”) - God was so angry that He said this two times. Why was God so angry? Let us look at the reason.
Whenever Moses went to the mountain to talk to God, the Israelites made a golden calf and started worshipping it as their god. When God saw this, He was so angry that the Israelites made an idol instead of worshipping and glorifying Him when it was Him who was the one who provided everything for them. When God saw them worshipping the golden calf, God said that He will destroy and kill everyone and just spare Moses’ life.
The 10 spies out of the 12 spies said that they couldn’t conquer the land of Canaan and that they would all die if they entered the land of Canaan, and said that they should just return back to Egypt. And again, God was so angry when He heard this. It was part of God’s plan for them to enter into the land of Canaan but the Israelites were disobeying God’s Words. They did not believe in His Words and did not want to enter into the land of Canaan, and wanted to return back to Egypt. They were ignoring God’s covenant, they were blocking God’s covenant from being fulfilled. That is why God said that He will destroy and kill all of the Israelites and only spare Moses’ life, and make him a great nation. What does this mean? Do you think God will not be able to work without the Israelites who were disobedient towards Him? Do you think God needed the Israelites to fulfill His plan? Without the Israelites, He was very capable of fulfilling His plan. But looking at Moses, He wanted to start all over again by killing off the Israelites and starting anew with Moses. But how did Moss respond to God’s anger?
3. The Covenant Journey
1) The prayers of the evangelist
I think this is the reason why God truly cherished and loved Moses, and we can see the reason in Exodus 32:32 (“Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”) - This is a prayer of a true evangelist. When God said that He was going to destroy all of the Israelites and spare only Moses, he responded to God and pleaded in Exodus 32:32. This is a very amazing prayer. This is an imaginable prayer. Moses could’ve allowed and said for God to do it according to His will and desire but instead Moses pleaded God to forgive Israelites. And Moses said if God couldn’t forgive then he demanded for God to take his name out of the book that God has written in heaven. This showed how much Moses loved his people. This is the heart that evangelists must have.
Numbers 14:19 (“Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”) - God continued to give His Words and answers even despite the fact that the Israelites were continuing to complain and grumble. No matter how wicked we may be, God continues to love and answer us. Moses held onto this. Until now, Moses reminded God that God continued to answer them even in times when they were grumbling and complaining, and asked God to forgive them one more time. When God heard Moses’ plea, God answered his prayers once again. This is how important one person’s intercession of prayer is. Moses who prayed with a burning heart of love towards his people, God saw Moses’ heart and love and answered his prayers. Due to this reason, God continued to use and bless Moses. Apostle Paul was also like this.
Romans 9:3 (“For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh.”) - When Paul’s fellow brethren were going into the ways of corruption, he asked for his brethren to be spared and forgiven as well. This shows Paul’s great love for his people and because of Paul’s great heart, God continued to use him. How was Moses and Paul able to have such great love? This was possible because they held onto God’s absolute covenant. They knew what it felt like to not have the covenant. Then, how do we hold onto the covenant?
2) The covenant journey
What is more important than receiving answers is to hold onto the correct covenant. The Israelites received many answers but that was not the answer that God wanted them to hold onto. The answer that God wanted them to hold onto was the covenant that will be fulfilled within their field. We need to hold onto the covenant of our covenant journey once again. I am continuing to hold onto the five points of the CVDIP (covenant, vision, dream, image, and practice).
Galatians 2:20 (“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”) - I am continuing to hold onto this covenant. I have accepted Christ into my heart so I am child of God. Until now, there has been curses and darkness upon my life but all of that has fled from my life. My old self has died but what is living now is not my old, past self but it is Christ who lives within me. I am not living for my physical life anymore but I am living for Jesus Christ who died for me. I am holding onto the faith of Jesus Christ who died on the cross for me.
My vision is Romans 12:1-2 (“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”) - When we give worship to God, we need to give it with happiness of sacrificing ourselves to God. A sacrifice ends up bearing all of the sins of a person and dying or taking complete responsibility for that person, on their behalf. It is talking about a person who is capable of devoting everything to pray for those who are weak, have fallen into sins and curses, and is suffering. A sacrifice is able to become holy and acceptable to God. When we give worship, we need to give worship by giving our whole heart of love and life towards God. This is the type of worship that God is pleased with.
Acts 20:24 (“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”) - God has given us life and the gospel so that we can proclaim to others and world. When we share the gospel, we must put it as our only aim within our lives and stake our entire lives on it.
Romans 14:8 (“For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.”) - Our past has already died so our lives belong to God. We need to pray that we give thanksgiving and be able to give our lives to God with a thankful heart. We need to pray so that we can live for God, and be able to confess that whether we live or die, we belong to God.
My masterpiece and practice is Jeremiah 33:2-3 (“This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is his name: 3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ ”) - The answer that God wants from us the most and is pleased with is having and holding onto the scriptures of Galatians 2:20, Romans 12:1-2, Acts 20:24, and Romans 14:8. And, then the words of Jeremiah 33:2-3 will be fulfilled within our lives. We need to call upon God while holding onto these scriptures. When we do this, then God promised us that He will give us great and unsearchable things we do not know. If we do this, then God will grant us our masterpiece.
Conclusion
What we need to hold onto is finding what is the greatest answer? People think that becoming wealthy and making a lot of money is the definition of success. They think that this is the greatest answer and they will become so happy with this answer but this is truly not what we want or need. What we want to receive is the answer that God is with us. We need to pray with this. All probelms are a process towards answers. Everything takes places so that it will lead us to fulfill God’s covenant. The greatest answer is that God is with us.
May we receive the blessing of Genesis 39:3 (“When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did.”) - This was the answer that God gave to Joseph. May we receive this blessing in our lives. May we enjoy this blessing and answer.
