잉태할 힘을 얻은 사라의 믿음 (히11:11-12)
서론
120년 전 이야기이다. 한국에 미국 선교사님이 와서 의료 선교를 하고 있었다. 하루는 몸에 종기가 심하게 난 환자가 찾아왔다. “선교사님 제 몸에 심한 종기가 났습니다. 선교사님에게 좋은 약이 있다는 얘기를 듣고 찾아왔습니다. 저를 도와주시고 치료해주세요.” 선교사님이 그 얘기를 듣고 페니실린을 그에게 주었다. 그러면서 “이것은 최근에 난 아주 좋은 약이니까 이것을 드시면 몸이 괜찮아질 것입니다” 하고 말했다. 이 사람은 그것을 받아들면서 물어봤다. “이 약 값이 얼마입니까.” 선교사님은 선교할 목적으로 생각하고 대답을 했다. “이 약은 공짜입니다. 그냥 집에가서 드세요” 하고 얘기했다. 이 사람이 그것을 들고나오면서 생각했다. ‘이 약을 공짜로 주는거 보니까 가짜가 틀림없을거야’ 하고 생각했다. 그 생각을 하고 이 사람은 길가에 가다가 그 귀한 약을 그냥 버렸다. 그 이후에 그 사람은 종기가 심각하게 되었다. 왜 그랬는가. 그 사람은 의사의 말을 듣지 못했기 때문이다. 다시 말씀드리면 의사의 말을 믿지 않았다. 믿는다는 것은 신뢰한다는 것을 나타내는데 의사의 말을 신뢰하고 따르지 않았다. 우리가 사람을 믿는다는 것은 그 사람이 나에게 중요한 이야기를 했을 때 그 사람의 말을 듣고 나에게 확신이 온다면 내게 있던 생각을 포기하고 그 사람 말을 받아들일 것이다. 그게 진짜 믿는 것이다. 우리 신앙에 있어서 가장 중요한 것이 믿음이다. 지난 시간에 제가 물어보았다. 말씀을 들을 때 말씀을 믿으려고 하십니까 안그러면 말씀이 믿어집니까 하고 물었다. 대단히 중요한 말씀이다. 이 중에서 내가 말씀을 믿으려고 한다는 것은 내가 노력을 해서 신앙생활을 하려고 하는 것이다. 믿어진다는 것은 하나님의 은혜 가운데 신앙생활을 하고 있다는 것이다. 우리가 신앙생활 하는 것은 은혜 가운데 믿어지는 것이다. 말씀을 누리면서 아 천국이 있구나, 지옥이 있구나 하는 것이 믿어지는 것이다. 보지 못해도 사단이 있구나 천사가 있구나 믿어지는 것이다. 믿음을 확실히 붙잡는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 모른다. 엡 2:8에 중요한 말씀이 나타난다.
1. 믿음의 사라
1) 믿음의 내용
엡 2:8 너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라
구원이라는 것은 하나님의 은혜요 선물이라고 이야기하고 있다. 그런데 이 구원이 어떻게 오냐하면 믿음으로 말미암아 온다고 말씀하고 있다. 이것을 조금 더 확실히 잡기 위해서는 영어 해석을 볼 수 있다. Through faith, 믿음을 통하여 구원을 얻는다고 나와있다. 구원의 방법이 무엇이냐. 믿음을 통해서 구원받는다. 이것은 나의 의지나 결단으로 구원을 얻는 것이 아니라 믿음으로 말미암아 된다는 것을 나타낸다. 알미니안들은 구원을 받기 위해서는 믿는 자 답게 삶을 살아야 구원을 받는다고 이야기한다. 그런데 우리는 그렇게 이야기하지 않는다. 그 이유를 말씀드리겠다. 여기 보게되면 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받는다고 이야기하고 있다. 구원이 뭐냐. 새 생명을 얻었다는 것이다. 새 생명이라는 것은 옛 생명이 죽은 결과로 나타나는 것이다. 옛 생명이 죽는 과정을 믿음이라고 한다. 옛 생명이 죽는다는 것은 내 노력으로 되는 것이 아니다. 이 믿음은 하나님께서 하시는 일이다. 하나님의 일이라는 것은 나의 옛 사람은 죽고 새 생명을 얻게 하는 일이다. 여기서 중요한 것은 새 새명을 얻는다 하는 것은 인간의 힘이 아니라 성령의 역사로만이 가능하다. 이것이 우리에게 어떻게 나타나고 있는가. 믿음이라는 것은 예수를 그리스도로 믿고 영접하는 과정을 나타낸다. 예수님을 그리스도로 믿고 영접한다는 것은 나의 옛 사람이 죽는 것을 나타낸다. 옛 사람이 죽는다는 것은 바로 죄로 인한 나의 저주와 재앙이 없어지고 지옥 배경이 무너지고 영원한 형벌인 지옥에서 완전히 해방되는 것이다. 이 모든 것이 믿음을 통해서 이루어진다. 그래서 영접하는 순간에 새 사람이 되는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 이 모든 것은 전적인 하나님의 은혜가 된다. 그것이 루디아를 통해서 찾아볼 수 있다.
행 16:14 두아디라 시에 있는 자색 옷감 장사로서 하나님을 섬기는 루디아라 하는 한 여자가 말을 듣고 있을 때 주께서 그 마음을 열어 바울의 말을 따르게 하신지라
예수님을 영접하게 한 것은 주께서 마음 문을 열어서 따르게 한 성령의 역사 때문에 이루어진 것이다. 이것은 인간의 노력이 아니라 하나님께서 하신 일이다. 오늘 본문에 보면 그 내용을 발견할 수 있다.
2) 믿음의 내용
히 11:11 믿음으로 사라 자신도 나이가 많아 단산하였으나 잉태할 수 있는 힘을 얻었으니 이는 약속하신 이를 미쁘신 줄 알았음이라
여기서 단산하였다는 것은 아기를 낳기 불가능한 상태라는 것이다. 그런데 믿음으로 잉태할 수 있는 힘을 얻었다고 나온다. 어떻게 잉태할 수 있는 힘을 얻었는가. 이는 약속하신 이를 미쁘신 줄 알았음이라 하고 말씀하고 있다. 약속을 지키시는 신실하신 하나님이라는 것은 믿는 순간에 역사가 나타났다는 것이다. 여기서 분명히 잡아야할 것은 이 사라는 아브라함과 마찬가지로 당시에는 믿음이 없던 사람이었다. 창 17:7 말씀에 보게되면 하나님께서 아브라함에게 사라로부터 아들을 주겠다고 말씀하셨다. 그런데 아브라함은 그 소리를 듣고 엎드려서 웃었다고 이야기한다..
창 17:17 아브라함이 엎드려 웃으며 마음속으로 이르되 백 세 된 사람이 어찌 자식을 낳을까 사라는 구십 세니 어찌 출산하리요 하고
‘아이고 하나님 농담도 잘하십니다. 지금 내 나이가 백 살, 부인 나이가 구십 살인데 어떻게 자식을 얻을 수 있겠습니까‘ 하고 웃은 것이다. 창 18:12에 그 말씀을 사라도 듣고 마음 속으로 웃었다.
창 18:12 사라가 속으로 웃고 이르되 내가 노쇠하였고 내 주인도 늙었으니 내게 무슨 즐거움이 있으리요
사라도 안믿었다는 말이다. 이 사람들의 믿음의 상태가 하나님이 말씀하시면 웃기만 했었다. 마음 속으로 웃는 그 모습을 보면서 하나님께서 말씀하셨다.
창 18:14-15 여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐 기한이 이를 때에 내가 네게로 돌아오리니 사라에게 아들이 있으리라 15 사라가 두려워서 부인하여 이르되 내가 웃지 아니하였나이다 이르시되 아니라 네가 웃었느니라
내가 너에게 자식을 주겠다고 말씀하셨다. 그러니까 15절 말씀에 사라가 두려워서 부인하여 이르되 내가 웃지 아니하였나이다 하니 하나님께서 아니다 네가 웃었느니라 말씀하셨다. 하나님께서 하신 말씀을 듣고 이제는 완전히 두려움에 떨면서 안웃었다고 말하는 내용이다. 이 이야기를 들은 사라는 깊은 깨달음을 얻은 것으로 나타난다. 바로 믿음의 역사이다. 그 깨달은 것이 오늘 본문에 나타난다. 사라는 약속하신 일을 미쁘신 줄 알았다고 이야기하고 있다. 그동안 하나님께서 약속하신 말씀을 성취하시는구나, 바로 창조하신 하나님이시구나 하는 확신이 확 들어온 것이다. 그래서 언약을 잡게된 것이다. 그래서 12절 말씀에 나타난다.
2. 믿음의 열매
1) 믿음의 후손
히 11:12 이러므로 죽은 자와 같은 한 사람으로 말미암아 하늘의 허다한 별과 또 해변의 무수한 모래와 같이 많은 후손이 생육하였느니라
많은 후손을 얻었다고 말씀하고 있다. 여기서 중요한 내용을 붙잡아야겠다. 사라가 아들을 약속을 받을 때는 사라가 믿음이 없을 때였다. 무슨 말씀이냐면 이삭이 태어난 것은 사라의 믿음의 행위 때문에 태어난 것이 아니라는 것이다. 그러면 어떻게해서 태어났는가. 하나님의 언약 때문에 태어난 것이다. 이것이 바로 성경이 말하고 있는 믿음이다. 믿음 없는 사라를 믿음의 세계로 불러들이셔서 잉태하는 축복을 주신 것이다. 그래서 사라로 하여금 언약의 대열 속의 축복을 누릴 수 있도록 하나님께서 인도하신 것이다. 그래서 허다한 후손을 얻게 된다. 여기서 많은 후손을 얻었다는 것은 육신의 후손만 말하는 것이 아니라 믿음의 후손, 영적인 후손도 말하는 것이다. 그러면 여기서 믿음을 다시 한 번 붙잡아야겠다. 믿음이란 무엇인가. 하나님께서 우리를 다스리고 붙드시는 방법이다. 믿음을 통해서 하나님의 언약을 이루어나가고 계신다. 그러므로 우리가 언약 속에 있다는 자체가 최고의 응답이고 축복이다. 이 사라나 아브라함이 축복 받은 것은 언약 속에 있었기 때문이다. 우리가 언약을 잡고 있다는 것이 얼마나 큰 축복인지 다시 한 번 붙잡으시기 바란다. 여러분들이 언약을 잡게된 동기가 내가 영적 문제가 많아서, 또 여러가지 고통 가운데서 헤매다가 언약을 붙잡게 되었을 수도 있다. 복음 안에 있는 사람들은 영적문제가 있다는 것이 부끄러운 것이 아니다. 그것 때문에 복음을 잡았다면 축복의 원인인 것이다. 분명한 것은 그리스도가 모든 문제의 답이라는 확신이 있는 것이다. 이것이 바로 최고의 응답이요 축복의 자리인 줄로 믿는다.
2) 믿음의 역사
그러면 언약 잡은 자에게는 어떤 믿음의 역사가 나타나는가. 눅 1:14에 마리아에 대한 이야기가 나온다. 마리아는 동정녀임에도 성령을 통해서 예수님을 잉태하는 축복을 받았다. 이 사라가 받은 축복이 바로 마리아와 같은 축복이다. 사라의 믿음과 마리아의 믿음이 비슷하게 시작되었던 것 같다. 그러나 마리아가 천사가 와서 전하는 하나님 말씀을 언약으로 확실히 붙잡았다. 주께서 하신 말씀이 반드시 이루어지라고 믿은 그 여자에게 복이 있도다 하고 말씀했다. 이것이 믿음의 역사이다. 그 때 마리아는 자기 모든 것을 포기한다. 모든 염려, 근심, 걱정을 맡기는 것이다. 처녀가 임신을 했다고 하면 돌에 맞아 죽는 상황에 처할 수도 있다. 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기고 말씀대로 이루어지리이다 했다. 여기서 큰 축복을 받게 된다. 뿐만 아니다. 마 10:51-52에 소경 바디매오 사건이 나타난다. 바디매오가 예수님 앞에 와서 엎드린다. 예수님께서 물으셨다. “네게 무엇을 해주기를 원하느냐.” 바디매오가 “선생님 내가 보기를 원합니다” 한다. 그 때 예수님께서 하신 말씀이다. “네 믿음이 너를 구원하였느니라.” 이 바디매오가 가진 믿음이 무엇인가. 언약의 주인공 되신 그리스도를 완전히 붙잡았다. 이 분을 붙잡으면 내가 새 삶을 살 수 있다는 확신이 있었던 것이다. 그래서 예수님께서 너를 부르신다 하는 제자들을 말을 들었을 때 겉 옷을 벗어 던져버렸다고 나온다. 나는 이제 새 삶을 살 것이니까 필요 없다는 것이다. 옛날에는 더듬거리며 걸을 수 밖에 없었다. 그런데 말씀을 보면 일어나서 뛰어갔다고 나온다. 확신을 가졌던 것이다. 과거를 완전히 버리고 새 생명을 얻었다는 확신을 가진 것이다. 여기서 바디매오는 엄청난 축복 속으로 들어간다. 다시 말씀드리면 우리가 온전한 믿음을 붙잡는다는 것은 옛 것을 완전히 버리는 것이다. 그럴 때 사라와 마리아의 축복을 받게되고 바디매오의 놀라운 역사가 여러분들에게 나타날 줄로 믿는다.
3. 믿음의 누림
1) 항상 누릴 축복
그러면 이 믿음을 갖고 우리는 어떻게 누려야겠는가. 우리는 메세지를 확실히 잡아야한다. 우리가 항상 누려야하는 축복을 붙잡아야한다. 보좌의 축복을 정말로 누려야한다.
왕하 19:35 이 밤에 여호와의 사자가 나와서 앗수르 진영에서 군사 십팔만 오천 명을 친지라 아침에 일찍이 일어나 보니 다 송장이 되었더라
우리는 자꾸만 내 기준으로 생각하지 말고 영적사실, 하나님 자녀에게 부여되는 엄청난 축복을 누리는 자리로 들어가야한다. 실질적으로 일어나고 있으니까. 이 축복을 정말 누리시기 바란다. 두번째 누려야할 것이 시공간을 초월하는 능력이다. 이 능력은 어디서 나타나는가. 바로 예수님의 이름의 능력을 통해 나타난다. 저는 틀림없이 예수 그리스도 이름으로 기도하면 눅 10:18 말씀이 이루어지는 것에 확신을 갖고있다. 제자들이 나와서 예수님 이름으로 외치니까 귀신들이 떠나가더이다 하고 얘기한다. 예수님께서 말씀하셨다.
눅 10:18 예수께서 이르시되 사탄이 하늘로부터 번개 같이 떨어지는 것을 내가 보았노라
이것은 예수님 이름을 선포할 때 틀림없이 일어나는 사건이다. 제가 한국에서 부교역자 생활을 할 때 어떤 집사님에 저에게 귀신들린 사람들 데리고 온 적이 있다. 저도 어떻게 해야할지 당황을 해서 일단은 방으로 데려가서 앉으라고 했다. 그래서 앉혀놓고 ‘성경에서 예수님 이름으로 기도하라고 했지’ 하고는 “예수님 이름으로 명하노니 더러운 귀신은 나가라” 하고 소리쳤다. 저는 믿음을 갖고 한 것도 아니고 성경에서 그렇게 했으니까 그냥 흉내낸 것이었다. 그런데 이게 왠일인가. 그 사람 입에서 얘기하기를 “내가 여기 들어온 것을 어떻게 알았지?” 했다. 그 소리를 하지마자 내가 머리가 번쩍 섰다. 나타났구나 싶어서 “예수 그리스도 이름으로 명하노니 더러운 귀신아 나가!”하고 더 크게 소리쳤다. 그러니까 “얘도 모르고 있었는데 어떻게 알았지?” 했다. 여러분 예수 그리스도 이름의 능력이 얼마나 쎈지 저는 처음 현장에서 체험했다. 예수 이름으로 계속 기도하니까 꼼짝 못하고 굴복했다. 믿음이 있느냐 없느냐 상관없다. 확신을 갖고 성경에 기록되어있으니까 기도해보시라. 틀림없이 역사가 나타난다. 우리 눈에 보이지 않아도 실질적으로 그런 역사가 나타나고 있다. 여기서 기도해도 한국에 있는 친척이나 동생이 어려움 당하고 있다면 기도하면 떨고 도망간다. 그 다음에 세번째 누릴 것은 237 빛의 축복이다. 왜 그런가. 예수님께서는 너희가 세상의 빛이다 하셨다.
사 60:2 보라 어둠이 땅을 덮을 것이며 캄캄함이 만민을 가리려니와 오직 여호와께서 네 위에 임하실 것이며 그의 영광이 네 위에 나타나리니
여러분들이 복음을 전하는 순간에 흑암의 권세들이 무너지는 것을 아시기 바란다. 우울증 환자, 조울증 환자, 아무 상관 없다. 복음을 전하시면 틀림없이 흑암이 무너지는 역사가 나타난다. 분명히 말씀하고 있다. 오직 여호와께서 네 위에 임하실 것이며 그의 영광이 네 위에 나타나리니. 그러면 우리가 확실히 먼저 누려야할 치유를 붙잡아야겠다.
2) 항상 누릴 치유
우리는 각인을 치유받고 치유하는 자리에 들어가야할 줄로 믿는다. 내게 각인된 것을 치유받고 치유하기 위해서 가장 좋은 말씀이 갈 2:20이다. 내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못박혔나니 이제 내가 사는 것이 아니라는 것이다. 지금까지 말씀드렸던 믿음의 행위가 이것이다. 내가 십자가에서 죽는 것이 내가 사는 길이고 축복받는 길이다. 이 복음이 각인되게되면 나에게 각인된 모든 쓴 뿌리들이 치유되는 역사가 나타날 줄로 믿는다. 두번째는 뿌리 치유이다. 깊이 뿌리박힌 것을 어떻게 치유하는가. 기도이다. 어떻게 기도하는가. 살전 5:16-18 말씀 잡고 기도하시라.
살전 5:16-18 항상 기뻐하라. 17 쉬지 말고 기도하라. 18 범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라
우리가 복음을 잡고 힘써 24시 기도하게 될 때 흑암이 무너지게 되어있다. 조금 전에 말씀드린 귀신을 쫓을 때 한 번으로 나가지 않았다. 예수님이 하시면 한 번에 나갈텐데 제가 하니까 한 번에 나가지 않았다. 자꾸만 나가라고 하니까 조금만 더 있다가 나가겠다고 했다. 여기가 내가 살기 제일 좋은데 인데 어디로 가라 하느냐면서 조금만 더 있게 해달라고 사정을 했다. 왜냐하면 그 귀신들은 바로처럼 끊질기게 붙어있기 때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 24시 기도가 되어야한다. 지쳐서 나가게 된다. 예수 그리스도 이름이라는 타격을 계속 받으면 지쳐서 권투할 때 쨉에 맞아서 K.O. 되듯이 지쳐서 나간다. 그리고 이제는 체질이 치유되는 축복을 받아야할 줄로 믿는다. 롬 16:3-4 말씀대로 브리스길라 아굴라는 믿음의 동역자의 삶을 살았다. 그는 이야기하기를 내가 복음 증거하는 자를 위해서는 생명도 아끼지 않겠다고 각오했던 사람들이다. 이 브리스길라 아굴라는 복음 전하는게 완전히 체질된 사람들이었다. 언약이 완전히 체질된 사람들이었다. 그래서 브리스길라 아굴라는 롬 16장에 이름이 적히는 축복을 받았다. 이 축복 속에 들어가시는 여러분 되시기를 예수 그리스도 이름으로 축원한다.
결론
얍 2:25-26 또 이와 같이 기생 라합이 사자들을 접대하여 다른 길로 나가게 할 때에 행함으로 의롭다 하심을 받은 것이 아니냐 영혼 없는 몸이 죽은 것 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이니라
알미니안들을 이것을 갖고 이야기한다. 여기서 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 믿음으라고 하는데 목사님은 무슨 말씀을 그렇게 하십니까 한다. 그 사람은 믿음에 대해서 잘 모르고있기 때문이다. 믿음이라는 것은 구원의 과정이다. 라합이 행함으로 축복을 받았던 원인이 이스라엘을 통해서 하나님이 역사하시는 것을 보고 자기 옛 사람, 자기 생각을 다 버렸다. 자기의 삶, 생각 다 버리고 하나님을 받아들였다. 자기에게 들어오는 소문을 확실히 언약으로 잡고 모든 것을 다 포기했다. 이 라합이 그 언약을 딱 잡으니까 하나님께서는 정탐꾼을 그에게로 보내셨다. 하나님을 믿는 믿음을 갖고 새 생명을 살 소망을 갖고있는 모습을 보면서 하나님께서는 정탐꾼을 그 집으로 들어가게 하셨다. 그럴 때 하나님께서는 라합에게 재창조의 놀라운 축복의 역사를 일으키셨다. 축복받는 여러분 되시기 바란다. 믿음으로 응답받는 여러분 되시기를 예수님 이름으로 축원한다.
The Faith of Sarah Who Received Strength to Conceive Seed (Hebrews 11:11-12)

“11 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.”
Introduction
There was a medical missionary who went to a mission trip and a patient came to get treatment for a severe boil on his skin. When the patient came to see the missionary, the patient said that she knew that this missionary was going to be able to heal him. The patient asked the missionary on how much this medication cost and the missionary answers, in hopes to sharing the gospel to this patient, it was free. When the patient heard this and received the medication, on his way home, the patient thought deeply and thought that the missionary was lying. The patient thought that since the missionary said the medication was free, the medication must be fake. So, the patient decided to not to take the medication and the patient ended up getting worse and his illness became very severe. Why did this happen? The patient did not listen to the words of the missionary. In other words, he didn’t believe in the words of the missionary. He didn’t trust and obey the words of the medical missionary. The patient decided to ignore the words of a healthcare provider. The fact that you don’t believe in the words of others, this means that you give up hope on the words of the people. This means that you don’t believe in this. The most important thing within our walk of faith is faith. Last week, I asked you, “When you listen to the word of God, do you try to listen or do you naturally believe?” This is a very important question and today's sermon is a very important message. Within this, the fact that you try to believe, this means that you are trying to live your walk of faith with effort and with your own works. If you naturally believe, this means that you are living your walk of faith in the midst of God’s grace. When you live your walk of faith, you are living it with believing in faith. When you listen to the word of God, you believe that there is heaven and hell. That is why holding onto faith is so important.
1. Sarah's Faith
1) The content of our faith
Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” - From here, you can see God’s grace and salvation in faith. Salvation comes from faith. I think the English translation of this Biblical passage explained it better and more clearly, it said that you have been saved through faith. What is the method of faith? You are saved through faith. You don’t believe with your own efforts and work, but you are able to believe through faith and God’s grace. For some individuals believe that salvation is obtained through good efforts and works. But that is not how it works. You have been saved through faith. Being saved means that you have gained new life. Having new life means that you are discarding your old self fully. Through discarding your old self and the process of Jesus’ death, this is called faith. Faith is something that God does. What is God’s work? It is allowing mankind to die and gain new life. From here, it is very important that when we gain new life, we have to understand that it is not through our own efforts but it is the work of the Holy Spirit. When you look at this, faith comes when you believe that Jesus is the Christ and accept Him into your heart. When you accept Christ and believe in Him, you are allowing your old self to die. When your old self dies, all of your fundamental sins and the fate of hell are completely broken down. We can see that everything is possible through faith. That is why when you accept Christ, you gain new life. This is God’s grace.
Acts 16:14 “Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.” - When Lydia heard the words of Paul, God allowed Lydia’s heart to open up. It was God who allowed Lydia’s heart to open up and receive God’s word from Paul. This was not man’s efforts, but it was the work of God.
2) The content of her faith
Verse 11 - She was past the age means that it was impossible for Sarah to bear a child. How did Sarah receive the strength to conceive a seed? The Bible said that Sarah believed in God’s promise. She believed that God was almighty and will absolutely keep His promise. From here, Sarah was someone who didn’t have any faith just like Abraham prior to this.
Genesis 17:17 “Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, 'Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?' ” - When Abraham heard this, Abraham laughed. He probably thought that God was joking because when he heard God’s promise, he was 100 years old and too old to bear a child. When Sarah heard God’s promise as well, she also laughed to herself. This means that Sarah didn’t believe as well. The state of their faith was that they looked down on God’s word and didn’t take God’s word sincerely. When God saw them laughing to themselves, God asked if they had any conscience?
Genesis 18:12, 14-15 “Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, 'After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.' 15 But Sarah denied it, saying, 'I did not laugh,' for she was afraid. And He said, 'No, but you did laugh!' ” - When God heard Sarah’s laugh, she became afraid and claimed that she didn’t laugh at all. When Sarah heard this, she realized something very deeply. This was the start of the process of her faith. Believing in this was seen in today’s Biblical passage. She was able to finally realize and have the assurance that God was the One who is the Creator and will absolutely keep His promise. At that moment, she held onto God’s promise.
2. The Fruit of Faith
1) Descendants of faith
Verse 12 - Abraham and Sarah were able to gain many descendants. It is very important here that when Sarah received the promise of a son, she received this promise when she did not have faith. This means that when Isaac was born, he was born during the period of time when Sarah lacked faith. Then, how was Isaac able to be born? Isaac was born because of God’s covenant. This is what the Bible speaks about regarding faith. Sarah who had no faith, God gave here the ability to conceive of His promised covenant. This means that God guided Sarah so that she can enjoy the blessings of His promise. That is why Sarah was able to bear a descendant. This means that they were able to bear descendants of faith. From here, we need to look at faith closely. What is faith? Faith is God’s way to take hold of us. Through faith, God is able to fulfill His covenant. The fact that we are in the midst of God's covenant, this is the greatest blessing. Sarah and Abraham were in the midst of blessings was because they were inside God’s covenant. The fact that you are in the covenant, this is a tremendous blessing. There are people who say that they are in the midst of hardships and conflicts. Those who are in the gospel, they may experience and have spiritual problems. If we are hold onto the gospel in the midst of all, this is a tremendous blessing. What is absolute is that Jesus Christ is the answer to all problems. From here, we can be in the mist of the greatest blessing and answer.
2) The work of faith
What is the work of faith of those who are in the God’s covenant?
Luke 1:14 “And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.” - It speaks about Mary. Mary was a virgin, but she received the blessing to conceive a child through God’s promise. The blessing that Sarah received, Mary also received the same blessing. We can see the start of process of faith for Mary and Sarah. Mary held onto the promise that the angel gave her and held onto God's promise. This is the work of faith. When the work of faith arose, Mary discarded all things and entrusted all things to God. She knew that she could be beaten to death because she was a virgin who conceived a child, but she entrusted all things to God and believed that God’s word will be absolutely fulfilled. From here, she received tremendous blessings.
Not only that but in Mark 10:51-52 “So Jesus answered and said to him, 'What do you want Me to do for you?' The blind man said to Him, 'Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.' 52 Then Jesus said to him, 'Go your way; your faith has made you well.' And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.” - Bartimaeus, the blind man, came before Jesus and knelt before Him. Jesus asked what Bartimaeus wanted from him and Bartimaeus replied that he wanted to see again since he was blind. At that time, Jesus said that Bartimaeus’ faith had saved him. What kind of faith did Bartimaeus have? Bartimaeus believed in Jesus who was the author of salvation. Bartimaeus had the assurance that if he held onto Jesus then he will gain new life. When Bartimaeus regained his vision, he threw away everything and realized that he gained new life. Before when he was blind, he had no choice but to struggle around when walking but after he gained his vision, he ran around. He had assurance that he gained new life. From here, we can see that tremendous blessings came to Bartimaeus. When it comes to faith, you must discard your old self. Then, you can gain blessings just like Sarah, Mary, and Bartimaeus. how can we enjoy this faith? This is the assurance that we must gain.
3. The Enjoyment of Faith
1) What to always enjoy
We must enjoy the blessings that we possess. We must enjoy the blessing of the throne.
The blessing of the Throne (2 Kings 19:35 “And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead.”) - We always think according to our own standards and ways, but we must enter the place of enjoying the blessings of being a child of God. These things are working realistically. Enjoy these blessings.
The power to transcend time and space (Luke 10:18 “And He said to them, 'I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’ ”) - Where does the power to transcend time and space come from? It comes from the authority of God. I truly believe that if we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, then great works will arise as seen throughout the Bible. When the disciples of Jesus commanded in the name of Jesus, all the demons fled. Jesus said in Luke 10:18 that Satan fell like lighting from the sky. This is the work that takes place when we proclaim in the name of Jesus Christ. When I was in Korea as an Assistant Pastor, there was someone who was bought before me who was demon possessed. When I saw this person, I was kind of taken aback but I remembered in the Bible said that if you speak and proclaim the name of Jesus Christ, the demons will flee so I commanded in the name of Jesus Christ. I didn’t say it much with faith and I just said what the Bible said for me to do but at that moment, the demon possessed person said, “How did you know I was in here?” When I heard those words, I got goose bumps and at that moment, I commanded that in the name of Jesus Christ, "You demon, flee!" The demon possessed person said, “This person next me to didn’t know I was in here but how did you know I was in here?” This was the first time I experienced the power and authority of the name of Jesus Christ. When I continued to pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the person couldn’t do anything. This doesn’t matter if you don’t believe but if you have assurance and hold onto what the Bible tells us and pray and command in the name of Jesus Christ then absolutely works will arise. You may not see it with your physical eyes, but spiritual works are taking place. Let us say that you are praying for someone who lives all the way in Korea, works will still take place.
The blessing of the light for the 237 nations (Isaiah 60:2 “For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.”) - Jesus said, you are the light of the world. The moment you relay the word of God, all darkness will flee. Patients who are mentally ill or depressed, then all darkness will flee. The Bible absolutely says that God’s glory will come upon you and the Lord will arise over you. Truly enjoy this. When you do this, then there is healing that you must enjoy.
2) Healing that must always be enjoyed
Healing of the imprint (Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”) - We must receive healing of our imprint. The message to hold onto to receive healing of your imprint is Galatians 2:20. This is the message of faith that we must hold onto. This is the message that shows us how to discard our old self and gain new life. When the gospel becomes imprinted in us, then all our rotten roots and imprints will become healed and uprooted.
Healing of the root (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”) - How can we receive healing of our deep roots? It is through prayer. How do you pray? When you pray with the gospel, then all darkness will flee and the power of Satan will be broken down. I told you about the demon possessed person I encountered, when I commanded the first time, the demon didn’t flee the first time. If it was Jesus, the demon would've left the first time, but it wasn’t the case for me. I commanded the demon to flee but the demon asked if he could stay a little better longer because this was a perfect place for the demon to live and the demon had nowhere else to go. This is because demons and evil spirits hold onto people like glue. That is why we must enter 24 hours. In order to make Satan exhausted, I commanded the evil spirit to flee, and I became so exhausted commanding this, but you must fight until you are exhausted.
Healing of nature (Romans 16:3-4 “Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.”) - Then, you will receive healing of your nature. Priscila and Aquila lived as people of faith. They staked their lives for evangelism. For Priscila and Aquila, they were completely imprinted with the gospel. Receive this blessing. Priscila and Aquila were able to enter tremendous blessings. Enjoy this blessing.
Conclusion
Hold onto James 2:25-26 “Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?” - The faith that struggles, what does this mean? This person didn’t know faith. The reason why Rahab received blessings was because she saw that God was at work and discarded all her thoughts. She discarded all of her thoughts and old self, and accepted God completely and entirely. All the rumors that she heard, they may have been just rumors but she held onto it as the covenant from God. We can see that it was all part of God's plan to send the spies to Rahab's house. Rahab had faith in God and held onto the hope for new life and this allowed the spies to enter Rahab’s house out all of the other houses they could’ve entered. When Rahab did this, God allowed the great work of recreation to come upon Rahab. Truly enjoy this blessing. Through faith, may you receive great blessings.
