Jesus Who is More Worthy Than Moses (Hebrews 3:1-6)

“ 1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. 3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. 5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. ”
Introduction
There was a story that I heard from a pastor and there was an elder who had a son, and this son lived a very faithful life just like his father. The son received a lot of grace and said to his father that he wanted to become a pastor. The father approved so the son attended a seminary school and became a pastor. After he became a pastor, he raised up his own church but the church wasn’t doing really well. He was already praying a lot but he made a resolution to enter into a 40 day fasting prayer. The pastor gave up everything and entered into a 40 day fasting prayer. However, while doing fasting prayer, he ended up passing away. Many people who see this may ask why did this pastor end up passing away? He is a servant of God and he was investing in a time of prayer but why would he die? Isn’t God happy when we pray to Him? Also, when we do fasting prayer, God is pleased but why would God allow this pastor to pass away? Many people may have a lot of speculations regarding this but even before I came to America, many pastors participated in fasting prayer in South Korea. The reason why is because many pastors had difficulties with their pastoral ministry so they would enter into fasting prayer for 40 days to ask God for help. But those who entered into fasting prayer, many of them did succeed but some of the pastors would end up losing their lives. At least 30 pastors in Korea per year who have participated in fasting prayer have passed away. I am not sure if they are continuing to do this even now but I am sure there are pastors who are continuing to pass away while doing 40 day fasting prayer. Why would a pastor die while doing a fasting prayer? They are doing the work of God but why would this happen? We need to hold onto something important here. Even if you are pastor, if you don’t have the gospel, then you will be attacked. But, how can a pastor not have the gospel? Just because you know the Bible doesn’t mean you know the gospel. You need to know and believe in the gospel. In other words, we need to know and believe that Jesus Christ finished everything on the cross. The most important thing is to hold onto Acts 1:1, 3, 8 which is Jesus Christ, the kingdom of God, and the Holy Spirit; we need to enjoy this. We need to know, believe, and enjoy Jesus Christ, the kingdom of God, and Holy Spirit then answers will rightfully come to us. That is why we must hold onto the gospel and covenant as we listen to today’s message. We should not listen to the message to just entertain our ears but we must take the message as the covenant of God and the gospel. The title for today’s sermon is about the worthiness of Jesus Christ.
1. Moses' Faithfulness
1) Moses' faithfulness
Verse 2 - It is recorded in the Bible that Moses was faithful. Through today’s message, it shows that Moses was a faithful servant of God. To what extent was he faithful? When I think about Moses, the part in the Bible that I receive most grace regarding Moses was the event of the 12 spies entering into the land of Canaan. The 12 spies returned back from the land of Canaan but 10 out of 12 spies were in disbelief and stated that they could not conquer this land because they were too weak and wanted to return back to Egypt. But, when God heard the words of the Israelites, He became very angry.
God was so angry that He told Moses that He will kill everyone and just raise up Moses in Numbers 14:12, 19-20 (“I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they. 19 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. 20 Then the Lord said: “I have pardoned, according to your word.”) - Moses was not content that God was just happy with him alone and pleaded for God to forgive the Israelites as seen in Numbers 14:19-20. Moses truly loved his people and prayed earnestly for them before God. When God heard Moses’ plea, God said that He heard Moses’ words and had pardoned them because of Moses. Through Moses’ earnest prayer, God’s heart was eased and He forgave the Israelites.
That is why it was written in Numbers 12:3 (“Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.”) - If you look at Moses’ entire life, rather than praying for himself, he would pray more for his people. Even though the Israelites were complaining and grumbling to him, Moses continued to accept all of that and prayed for them. And, through this, God was glorified.
2) Moses' blessings
Verse 3 - Moses received glory but there was someone who received more glory than him. Jesus Christ received a lot of glory but Moses also received a lot of glory as well. What was the reason why Moses received glory?
The reason is written in Exodus 33:11 (“So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.”) - This is the blessing that I envy Moses most of. Moses would talk to God as if God was his friend. This is a great blessing that Moses received and enjoyed. Moses enjoyed 24 hour deep prayer with God. He would converse with God as if He was his friend. May you receive this blessing as well.
Moses received a lot of glory and another reason is written in Exodus 34:29 (“Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.”) - He was in such a deep conversation with God that his face shone so brightly that when he came down from the mountain after talking to God, there was so much of God’s glory shining from Moses’ face. When the people saw Moses’ face, it was shining so brightly that they couldn’t bear to stare at Moses’ face. What was the reason why this happened to Moses? This was because he was conversing with God. This is the blessing of prayer. When we have deep prayer with God and have deep communication with Him, then God’s glory will be upon us. When you have deep conversation with God, then the result is 25 hours. That is why Moses received tremendous blessings and glory. There is no one else in the Bible who shined as brightly as Moses did to the point where his face had to be covered and people couldn’t stare at his face. Moses was one of few people in the Bible who received God’s greatest glory.
2. Jesus' Superiority
1) Jesus' greatness
Verse 1 - “Apostle” is referring to the prophet. What is a prophet? A prophet is someone that God directly raises up. It is also says high priest. High priest means he is raised up before men for God. Then, what is a king? A king is raised up to specifically fight against Satan. This is what Jesus Christ. We need to think deeply about this. Why do we need to think deeply? There are all answers within this. We must find the answers within this. That is why in today’s scripture, it was comparing Jesus Christ with Moses in verses 3-6. This comparison was not comparing the commonality between Jesus and Moses but the comparison was between the gospel and the law. There are three main sections that we could look at.
2) Comparison to Moses
Verses 3-6 - We spoke about how Moses received God’s glory to the point where his face was shining so brightly but this light disappeared once he stopped praying but what about Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ is the light. He is the source of light. It also says that Moses was faithful in the house of God, which means the Church. When we are referring to the Church, we are referring to the congregation (the believers). If Moses is considered faithful in the house of God, then what about Jesus? He is the one who built the house of God, or the church, and He is the Creator. In other words, Moses also received salvation through his faithfulness to Jesus Christ. It is said in this Scripture that Moses was faithful in the house of God. This house of God in which Moses served according to this scripture was referring to the Church in the wilderness. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the One who built that House of God.
Verse 5 - “For a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward” - The testimony is referring to the prophecy of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. When we look at the works of the servant, Moses, we can see that he participated in many works such as building the tabernacle, conducted blood sacrifices, and relayed the 10 commandments to the people. But all of this law and everything that he did was pointing towards Jesus Christ. Moses was used so that He could show the work of Jesus Christ. This was all referring to Jesus Christ. We can see that Moses was used preciously for the sake of the gospel and the name of Jesus Christ. What is Judaism? It began to pave the way for Christianity. In the same way, the law started for the sake of the gospel. What is the conclusion of the Bible? It is Jesus Christ, the gospel. If we hold onto Jesus Christ, then everything is finished just like it was mentioned in the introduction.
3. Moses' Family Line
1) The Levite lineage
When I was reading today’s passage, I started thinking deeply about the family line of Moses. I received a lot of grace while reading about Moses.
Exodus 2:1 (“And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi.”) - When Moses was born, it said that he was born through a father who as a Levi as well as mother who was a daughter of a Levi. What we need to understand from this, when Moses was born, the Levite lineage was not a lineage of blessings but rather it was lineage that was cursed. Why was the Levite lineage cursed? When Jacob returned from the land of Haran after his dream, his daughter was wondering around and got raped by the men of Shechem by a man named Shechem. After Dinah was raped, she ran to her father, Jacob, crying telling them what happened so he gathered all of his family to hold a family meeting to discuss what happened and the solutions for this matter. Jacob told his family that Dinah got raped and asked his family what they must do about this. But Dinah’s brothers became so angry stating that this has brought shame to their family and were filled with fury. But the man who raped Dinah said that the reasons and excuse for his behavior was that he thought Dinah was so beautiful and wanted to marry her. Shechem begged for Jacob’s approval and stated that he will do anything to marry Dinah. However, Jacob at first did not approve for this marriage but under one condition, Jacob agreed that if all of the household of Shechem get circumcised then Jacob will approve of this marriage. Shechem was so happy to hear this so he returned back to his household and ordered for all the males to be circumcised.
Genesis 34:25 (“Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.”) - But Jacob’s sons took advantage of this and ended up murdering all of the men while they were recovering from the circumcision. They killed all of the men within this household. Not only that but they stole all of their possessions and belongings. Jacob became so angry when he heard this.
That is why it is written why Jacob cursed his sons in Genesis 49:5, 7 (“ 'Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; And their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob And scatter them in Israel.' ”) - This was the prophecy of curses that Jacob relayed to his sons as spoken by God to Jacob. Jacob cursed his sons, Simeon and Levi twice. And, it happened exactly as it was prophesied. The lineage of Levi became cursed due to this.
2) Jochebed's faith
But at that time, Jochebed bore a son named Moses. The fact that Jochebed had a son, that means that she had a son within a cursed family line as well as during the most detrimental time when it was commanded for all the sons born in Egypt who were a descendant of Israel to be killed. If they disobeyed the law then the whole entire family will be killed. But when Jochebed had a son, she loved him so much that she hid him instead of killing him. But when Moses became 3 months old, she couldn’t hide Moses anymore so she made a resolution to put Moses in a basin in the river.
Exodus 2:3-4, 10 (“But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. So she called his name Moses, saying, 'Because I drew him out of the water.' ”) - The thing that you must understand is that Jochebed made an ark. She remembered the ark during Noah’s time. During Noah’s time, anyone who entered into the ark, they all lived and she remembered this. Therefore, she believed that if she put Moses, her son in this ark then God will save Moses just like how God saved the people in Noah’s ark. She entrusted everything to God and put Moses inside the ark. She knew of the event of the ark of the covenant as told in the Bible so well. She held onto the covenant that anyone who entered into the ark, they will live. She held onto the covenant that if anyone who holds onto Christ the ark, they will live. But God poured down His answer to Jochebed according to her faith. She built the ark, placed Moses in there, and released it into the river bank. But during that perfect time, the princess of Egypt was taking a bath in this specific river and while she was taking a bath, she discovered Moses in the river and grew pity for him. But also that perfect time, Moses’ sister was following Moses in the ark as he was going through the river to see what would happen to Moses. But, when the princess held onto Moses, Miriam recommended a nanny to Moses to which the princess approved. That is why Jochebed became Moses’ nanny until the age of five, until his breastfeeding years at the palace. During that time in the palace, Moses became the son of the princess of Egypt. Jochebed raised Moses for five years as his nanny and during this time, she did something very important to Moses. She made sure to imprint the gospel to Moses during this time.
To what extent? It is written in Hebrews 11:26 (“Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.”) - Even though Moses possessed many great possessions and riches within the palace, what was greater all of that was being imprinted with the gospel. There is something that we must hold onto here. During this short period of five years, what did Jochebed do to allow Moses to harvest such great faith? Jochebed lived a life of great faith that she relayed to her son. Moses was completely imprinted within the gospel. During those five years, she imprinted the gospel so much to the point that Moses was able to memorize the entire events of Genesis and was able to write the book of Genesis. I think this is possible. There is an old movie called Roots and there was a man who lived in Africa but became enslaved to America. During his journey to America as a slave, he remembered the stories of his family that were told by his family but even after many months and days passed, he still remembered the stories of his family. This was how stories were told in the past. I am sure this was how Jochebed shared the gospel in the Bible to Moses. In order to imprint the gospel to Moses, she did everything possible. As a result, Moses was used greatly by God. We can see that the fruit of Jochebed’s faith showed through Moses.
3) The fruit of faith
In order to help Moses, God attached Aaron, Moses’ brother to him. When Moses said that he couldn’t do the work of God by himself, God said that He has attached Aaron, his brother, to help him.
Exodus 4:14 (“So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said: 'Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And look, he is also coming out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.' ”) - This gladness is referring to spiritual gladness. This showed that Aaron also possessed great faith. Not only did Jochebed imprint the gospel to Moses but also to his siblings, Aaron and Miriam. That is why when you look at the Bible, we can see that Aaron, Miriam, and Moses were all used greatly by God. This was all because of Jochebed’s faith and the way she raised them up in faith. Because of Jochebed’s faith, she was able to save her entire family line as well as the land of Egypt. Jochebed’s devotion did not end there.
Numbers 3:45 (“Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. The Levites shall be Mine: I am the Lord.”) - Not only did God decide to bless Moses, Aaron, and Miriam but promised blessings upon the entire Levite lineage. As you know, the Levite lineage was a cursed lineage but through one person, Jochebed, the entire lineage was saved and became blessed. The Levite lineage were able to receive eternal blessings and became God’s servants as a lineage of priests. Through Jochebed’s devotion and faith, the Israelites were able to receive the blessing to enter into the promised land, the land of Canaan, through Moses’ guidance as well as great blessings came upon the Levite lineage. Through your faith and devotion alone, it will not only save and bless you and your family but it will save and bless your entire family line and generations to come. We need to hold onto Jochebed’s faith. These are the great blessings that come from your acts of faith.
Conclusion
Hebrews 12:2 (“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”) - No matter what problems may come, the answer is Christ alone. Jochebed held onto Jesus Christ and this covenant and saved not only her children but her entire family line and the nation of the Israelites. May you receive blessings in the name of Jesus Christ.
모세보다 우월하신 예수님(히3:1-6)
서론
제가 한 목사님의 이야기를 들었다. 한 신실한 장로님이 아들이 있었다. 그 아들은 장로님을 닮아서 아주 신실한 신앙생활을 하고 있었다. 이 아들이 은혜를 받아서 목회를 해야겠다고 결단을 했다. 아버지가 그를 허락해서 신학교에 가서 열심히 공부하고 훈련을 받아서 목사님이 되었다. 목사님이 되고난 다음에 교회를 개척했다. 그런데 교회가 잘 되지 않았다. 기도해도 뭐가 잘 되지 않았다. 그래서 이 목사님이40일 금식기도를 들어가기로 결단했다. 그래서 이 목사님이 모든 것을 접어놓고 40일 금식기도에 들어갔다. 그런데 금식기도를 하던 도중에 이 목사님이 돌아가셨다. 많은 사람들은 그 분을 보고 왜 죽었을까 했다. 하나님의 신실한 종인데 왜 기도 도중에 죽었을까. 하나님은 기도를 기뻐하시는게 아닌가. 더군다나 금식기도를 제일 기뻐하시는 것으로 알고있는데 어떻게 금식기도를 하는데 하나님께서 돌봐주시지 않고 돌아가셨는가. 많은 사람이 이렇게 의심을 가질 수 있다. 제가 미국에 1992년도에 왔는데 그 이전만 해도 많은 목사님들이 40일 금식기도를 했다. 그 이유가 목회가 너무 힘들고 안되니까 하나님께 부르짖아서 응답을 받아야겠다는 일념으로 했던 것이다. 그런데 기도에 들어간 사람들을 보게되면 많은 사람들이 목숨을 잃는 경우가 많이 있었다. 매년 30명 이상되는 한국의 목사님들이 금식기도를 하다가 목숨을 잃었다. 요즘은 어떤지 모르겠다. 아마 지금도 금식기도를 하다가 목숨을 잃는 분들이 간혹 있을 줄로 믿는다. 왜 이런 일을 당하는가. 더군다나 목사님이 주의 일을 하기 위해서 하나님께 생명을 걸고 기도하는데 이런 일이 생기는가. 여기서 우리는 중요한 것을 잡아야한다. 누구든지 목사님이라 하더라도 복음이 없으면 당하고 만다. 목사님들이 얼마나 성경도 많이 알고 신실한 신앙생활을 하는데 복음이 없다니 무슨 말씀입니까. 중요한 것은 성경을 아는 것이 복음을 갖는 것이 아니다. 우리는 복음을 알아야한다. 복음을 믿어야한다. 그리스도께서 십자가에서 다 끝내셨다는 사실을 분명히 알고 믿어야한다. 가장 중요한 것은 사도행전 1장 1, 3, 8절, 그리스도, 하나님나라, 성령충만함을 누리는 사람이 되어야한다. 우리가 정말로 그리스도를 알고 믿고 하나님 나라를 누리고 성령충만함을 누리게되면 이 때부터는 되어지는 응답이 시작된다. 오늘도 말씀 가운데서 언약을 붙잡고 복음을 붙잡는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 모르겠다. 그냥 지식적으로 알아듣거나 귀만 즐거운 것이 아닌 나의 언약으로 잡는 시간이 되어야할 줄로 믿는다. 오늘 제목은 모세보다 우우러하신 예수님에 대해서 말씀을 받기를 원한다.
1. 모세의 신실함
1) 모세의 신실함
모세는 신실한 사람이었다고 성경에 기록되어있다.
히 3:2 그는 자기를 세우신 이에게 신실하시기를 모세가 하나님의 온 집에서 한 것과 같이 하셨으니
이 말씀을 보게되면 모세는 아주 신실하고 충성된 종이라는 것을 나타내고있다. 어느 정도인가. 모세의 참 모습에 은혜를 받았던 것은 가데스 바네아에서 일어난 정탐꾼 사건이었다. 12명이 가서 돌아왔는데 10명이 불신앙을 이야기했다. 우리는 거길 점령할 수 없다, 성도 워낙 크고 사람들도 크고 튼튼해서 우리가 메뚜기에 지나지 않는다고 이야기했다. 그래서 차라리 지도자를 세워서 돌아가자고 이야기했다. 이 이야기를 들으신 하나님께서 진노하셨다.
민 14:12 내가 전염병으로 그들을 쳐서 멸하고 네게 그들보다 크고 강한 나라를 이루게 하리라
모세는 이야기를 듣고 정말로 하나님께서 나를 인정하시고 기뻐하시는구나 에서 만족하는 것이 아니라 말씀을 거절한다. 정말 저들의 죄를 용서해달라고 이야기한다.
민 14:19-20 구하옵나니 주의 인자의 광대하심을 따라 이 백성의 죄악을 사하시되 애굽에서부터 지금까지 이 백성을 사하신 것 같이 사하시옵소서 여호와께서 이르시되 내가 네 말대로 사하노라
모세는 자기 백성을 사랑하는 뜨거운 마음으로 하나님께 간절히 기도하는 모습을 발견할 수 있다. 하나님께서는 내가 네 말대로 저들의 죄를 사하노라 하시면서 진노를 푸셨다. 모세는 참 대단한 사람이다. 하나님의 진노하심으로 심판하겠다 하시는 것을 간절한 기도를 통해서 용서함 받는 내용이다.
민 12:3 이 사람 모세는 온유함이 지면의 모든 사람보다 더하더라
모세의 평생을 보게되면, 특히 이 40년 동안의 삶을 보게되면, 자기 자신을 위해서 기도하는 것 보다는 오히려 항상 백성들을 위해서 기도하고 헌신하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 모세에게 불평 원망하면서 공격하는데도 다 받아들이면서 하나님께 기도하면서 응답 받아내는 것을 많이 본다. 하나님께서는 이 모세의 모습을 보시면서 큰 축복과 영광까지도 주신다. 3절 말씀에도 모세의 영광을 기록하고있다.
2) 모세가 받은 축복
히 3:3 그는 모세보다 더욱 영광을 받을 만한 것이 마치 집 지은 자가 그 집보다 더욱 존귀함 같으니라
예수님도 큰 영광을 받으셨지만 모세도 영광을 많이 받았다. 모세가 영광받은 이유가 무엇인가.
출 33:11 사람이 자기의 친구와 이야기함 같이 여호와께서는 모세와 대면하여 말씀하시며—
저는 모세가 받은 축복 가운데 가장 부러운 축복이 이것이다. 모세와 하나님은 서로 친구처럼 이야기했다는 것이다. 얼마나 큰 축복인가. 모세는 바로 24시의 깊은 기도를 누리고 있었던 것이다. 늘 친구처럼 대화하는 것이다. 이 축복을 여러분이 받으시기 바란다. 뿐만 아니라 모세가 언약궤 돌판을 갖고 내려올 때 모습을 이야기하고 있다.
출 34:29 모세가 그 증거의 두 판을 모세의 손에 들고 시내 산에서 내려오니 그 산에서 내려올 때에 모세는 자기가 여호와와 말하였음으로 말미암아 얼굴 피부에 광채가 나나 깨닫지 못하였더라
모세는 자기가 여호와와 말하였음으로 말미암아 얼굴 피부에 광채가 났다. 하나님과 깊은 교제를 하니까 하나님의 영광이 비춰서 얼굴에서 광채가 나는 것이다. 얼굴에 하나님의 영광이 나타났다. 많은 사람들이 모세의 얼굴을 보고 두려웠다. 모세는 사람들과 이야기하기 위해서 수건으로 얼굴을 가려야했다. 그 이유가 무엇인가. 자기가 여호와와 말하였기 때문이다. 하나님과 깊은 교제를 하게되면 하나님께서 하나님의 영광을 우리에게 나타내신다. 하나님과 깊은 교제를 하면 되어지는 것이 25시의 축복이다. 그래서 이 모세는 아주 큰 축복과 영광을 많이 받았던 사람이다. 아마 모세 말고 얼굴이 빛나서 가려야할 정도였던 사람은 성경에 없다. 아마 모세가 제일 큰 영광과 축복을 받은 한 사람이 아니었나 싶다. 그런데 오늘 성경에 보게되면 예수님은 참으로 그 위대하심은 모세와 비교할 바가 안된다고 이야기하고 있다.
2. 예수님의 우월성
1) 예수님의 위대하심
히 3:1 그러므로 함께 하늘의 부르심을 받은 거룩한 형제들아 우리가 믿는 도리의 사도이시며 대제사장이신 예수를 깊이 생각하라
사도이시라는 말이 나온다. 이 사도라는 것은 선지자라는 의미를 갖고있다. 선지자가 무엇인가. 하나님께서 인간을 향해서 특별히 세우신 분이다. 또 예수님이 제사장이라고 이야기하고 있다. 인간을 위해서 하나님을 향해 세우신 분이다. 그러면 왕은 무엇인가. 인간을 위해서 사단을 멸하시기 위해서 세우신 분이다. 예수님이 바로 그 분이다. 그래서 예수님을 깊이 생각해보라는 것이다. 왜 깊이 생각하라고 하는가. 여기에 모든 답이 다있다. 여기서 답을 찾으라는 것이다. 오늘 본문에 모세와 그리스도를 비교한다.
2) 모세와의 비교
이 비교는 모세와 그리스도와의 단순한 비교가 아니라 유대교와 복음과의 차이를 기록한 것을 찾아볼 수 있다. 세가지로 크게 기록하고 있다.
히 3:3-6 그는 모세보다 더욱 영광을 받을 만한 것이 마치 집 지은 자가 그 집보다 더욱 존귀함 같으니라 4집마다 지은 이가 있으니 만물을 지으신 이는 하나님이시라. 5 또한 모세는 장래에 말할 것을 증언하기 위하여 하나님의 온 집에서 종으로서 신실하였고. 6 그리스도는 하나님의 집을 맡은 아들로서 그와 같이 하셨으니 우리가 소망의 확신과 자랑을 끝까지 굳게 잡고 있으면 우리는 그의 집이라.
모세가 영광을 받아서 얼굴에 빛이 비추었다. 그런데 그 빛은 기도 안 할때는 없어지는 빛이었다. 그런데 예수님은 누구신가. 그리스도는 빛의 광채 자체시다. 빛의 근원되신 분이다. 또 모세는 하나님의 집이라고 이야기하고 있다. 집이라는 것은 교회를 나타낸다. 교회를 성도를 가르킨다. 모세가 하나님의 성도라면 그리스도는 그 집을 지으신 창조주이시다. 모세는 그리스도를 통해서 구원받은 자인 것이다. 또 모세는 하나님의 온 집의 종으로 봉사했다고 나온다. 하나님의 온 집이라는 것은 광야교회 자체를 나타낸다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들로서 바로 그 집을 지으신 분이다. 그래서 모세는 장래의 말할 것을 증언했다고 나온다. 장래의 증언할 것은 바로 그리스도를 나타낸다. 종으로서 모세가 한 일을 보게되면 성막을 만들었고 제사제도를 일으켰고 율법까지도 정했다. 그런데 그가 했던 성막이라던지 제사제도라던지 율법은 전부 다 그리스도를 나타내는 것이다. 모세는 그리스도를 위해서 귀하게 쓰임받은 종인 것이다. 유대교는 무엇인가. 바로 기독교를 위해서 시작된 것이다. 마찬가지로 율법도 복음을 위해서 시작된 것이다. 바로 이 성경의 결론이 복음이요 그리스도인 것을 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 우리가 여기서 그리스도를 분명히 잡게되면 서론에서 말씀드린 것과 마찬가지로 모든 문제가 끝이다. 저는 오늘 말씀을 보면서 모세의 가문에 대해서 깊이 생각해보았다.
3. 모세의 가문
1) 레위의 가문
이 모세의 가문을 통해서 제가 큰 은혜를 받았다. 우리가 잘 아는 바와 마찬가지로 출 2:1에 나오는 것과 마찬가지로 레위 가족 중 한 사람이 레위 여자에게 장가들어서 난 자가 모세이다.

그런데 이것을 분명히 알아야할 것은 모세가 태어날 당시의 레위가문이라는 것은 축복받은 예배의 가문이 아니라 사실은 저주받은 가문이었다. 저주라니 무슨 말씀인가. 저주받은 가문인 이유가 야곱이 하란 땅에서 세겜성으로 돌아왔었다. 돌아왔을 때 딸 디나가 세겜성에서 다니다가 성주 세겜에게 강간을 당한다. 그래서 디나는 강간을 당한 후에 울면서 돌아와서 아버지 야곱에게 이야기한다. 야곱은 기다렸다가 모든 자녀들이 모인 후에 회의를 한다. 디나가 강간을 당했다, 어찌했으면 좋겠느냐. 그랬더니 남자 형제들이 분이 가득차서 도저히 참을 수 없다고 한다. 그 때 마침 성주 하몰과 그 아들 세겜이 찾아온다. 세겜이 와서 이야기하기를 디나를 정말 사랑한다면서 결혼을 허락해달라고 한다. 이 때 우리는 결혼 시킬 수 없다고 한다. 무엇이든지 원하는데로 하겠다 결혼만 시켜달라고 한다. 그 때 조건을 내린다. 너희들과 너희 성에 있는 모든 남자들이 다 할례를 받게되면 결혼을 허락해주겠다. 이 얘기를 듣고 기뻐서 성에있는 모든 사람들에게 할례를 받아 한 가족이 되자고 권유한다. 그럴 때 다 순종하면서 할례를 행했다. 그런데 이 때를 노리고 아들 가운데 시몬과 레위가 칼을 들고 할례로 인해서 고통받고 있는 사람들을 다 죽여버린다. 하몰도 죽이고 아들도 죽이고 그 성에 있는 모든 남자를 다 죽여버린다. 뿐만 아니라 가축을 다 훔치고 집안 물건도 다 훔친다. 야곱이 진노를 했다. 그래서 창 49:5-7 말씀을 보게되면 레위와 시몬이 저주받는 내용이 나온다.
창 49:5, 7 시므온과 레위는 형제요 그들의 칼은 폭력의 도구로다 7그 노여움이 혹독하니 저주를 받을 것이요 분기가 맹렬하니 저주를 받을 것이라 내가 그들을 야곱 중에서 나누며 이스라엘 중에서 흩으리로다
야곱이 죽을 때 하나님께서 주신 말씀을 받아서 자녀들에게 예언을 하는데 그 예언 가운데 나온 말씀이다. 여기서 이야기하기를 저주를 받을 것이다 하는게 두 번 나타난다. 그리고 야곱 중에 나누며 이스라엘 중에서 흩어버리겠다고 이야기한다. 이들은 실질적으로 땅의 기업을 받지 못한다. 저주받은 민족이 레위 족속이었다. 이 때 요게벳이 모세를 임신하게 된다.
2) 요게벳의 신앙
요게벳이 아들을 나을 때 상황은 아주 저주받은 가문에서 저주받은 환경 가운데 낳게된다. 그 시대 상황은 아이를 낳으면 죽여야되는데 남자는 강에다 버리라고했다. 만일에 명령을 어기게되면 그 가족까지도 전체가 위험해지는 지경에 빠지게된다. 요게벳은 아들은 낳는다. 그런데 너무나 사랑스러워서 죽게 놔둘 수 없었다. 그래서 숨겨서 키우게 된다. 그런데 3개월이 되니까 너무나 목소리가 커서 발각이 되어서 화가 미칠 수 있다. 그래서 요게벳이 한 결단이 갈대상자에 역청을 바르고 나무 진을 칠해서 아기를 담그고 나일강에 띄우게된다. 여기서 생각해볼 것이 있다. 나무 상자에 역청과 나무 진을 칠했다. 이것은 요게벳이 옛날에 방주 사건 때 방주를 생각한 것이다. 노아시대에 방주에 들어간 사람은 다 살지 않았냐. 그러면 내 아들도 이 방주처럼 갈대상자에 역청을 칠해서 가라앉지 않도록 만들어서 집어넣게 되면 하나님께서 틀림없이 노아 방주처럼 우리 아들을 살려주실 것이다. 모든 것은 하나님께 맡기고 방주에 넣고 띄운 것이다. 이 요게벳은 성경에 대해서 너무나 잘 알고있는 사람이었다. 방주안에 들어가면 산다는 언약이 바로 그리스도 안에 들어가면 산다는 언약을 잡는 것이다. 하나님께서 방주 언약 그대로 요게벳에게 응답을 주셨다. 갈대상자를 갈대 숲에다 넣었다. 하나님께서 그 믿음을 받으시고 바로의 공주가 그 장소에 찾아오게 된다. 열어보니까 히브리 남자아이가 울고있다. 불쌍한 마음이 들었다고 나온다. 그 순간에 모세의 누나가 미리암이 멀리서 하나님이 행하시는 일을 기다리고 있었다. 공주가 모세를 붙잡는 것을 보고 얼른 쫓아가서 이야기한다. 이 아이를 위해서 유모를 붙여드릴까요 한다. 그러니까 공주가 붙여라 하고 허락을 한다. 그래서 다섯살이 될 때까지 모세의 집에서 자란다.
출 2:10 그 아기가 자라매 바로의 딸에게로 데려가니 그가 그의 아들이 되니라—
다섯살 때까지 요게벳이 데리고 키웠다는 것이다. 그런데 이 5년이라는 기간 동안에 요게벳이 엄청난 일을 했다. 이 때 복음을 확실히 심었던 것이다. 어느정도냐.
히 11:26 그리스도를 위하여 받는 수모를 애굽의 모든 보화보다 더 큰 재물로 여겼으니 이는 상 주심을 바라봄이라
애굽 왕국의 어마어마한 보호와 재물보다도 그리스도를 위하여 수모를 받는 것이 더 좋았다는 것이다. 여기서 우리가 잡아야할 것이 있다. 그 짧은 기간 동안에 아이에게 어떻게 했길래 이런 신앙을 가질 수 있는가. 궁에 들어갔을때는 이미 확실한 언약의 신앙을 확실히 잡고갔다는 것이다. 어린 아이에게는 말씀 각인이 완전히 되었던 것이다. 그 5년 동안에 얼만큼 말씀을 각인시켰느냐. 창세기를 기록할 정도로 각인되었었다. 창세기 그 방대한 양을 요게벳이 모세에게 각인시키고 암송할 정도로 만들었다. 저는 이것이 가능하다고 본다. 언제인지 몰라도 루트, 뿌리라는 영화가 있었다. 감비아라는 아프리카 나라에서 살았던 쿤타킨테라는 사람이 미국에서 노예살이를 하는 내용이다. 그 영화가 몇대에 걸쳐서 기록을 한 것을 볼 수 있다. 아프리카에서 올 때 어떤 기억을 가지고 있는게 아니었다. 할아버지의 할아버지의 할아버지의 할아버지로부터 전해들은 내용이 대대로 내려왔던 것이다. 몇대가 지났는데도 몇대 조상이 어디서 무엇을 했는지를 붙잡고 있는 것이 었다. 옛날에는 그런 식으로 전해져내려왔다. 아마 모세의 어머니 요게벳도 그런 식으로 말씀을 각인시키지 않았나 한다.
3) 신앙의 열매
요게벳은 복음을 심어주면서 전심을 다했다. 그 결과로 모세가 하나님 앞에 쓰임받는 귀한 종으로, 위대한 지도자로서 삶을 살게된다. 엄청난 요게벳의 신앙의 열매가 자식에게 나타났다. 출 4:14 말씀을 보게되면 모세를 도와주기 위해서 아론을 붙여주는 내용이 나온다. 모세가 내가 말이 둔해서 혼자 일을 할 수 없습니다 하니까 네 형 아론이 말을 잘하는자다 하면서 추천을 한다. 동역자를 붙여주셨다. 그런데 14절 마지막 말씀이 중요하다.
출 4:14 —그가 너를 볼 때에 그의 마음에 기쁨이 있을 것이라
여기서 기쁨이라는 것은 영적인 기쁨이 있을 것이라는 의미를 갖고있다. 아론도 이미 확실한 복음과 언약을 갖고있었다는 것이다. 이것을 보게되면 요게벳이 모세에게만 말씀을 각인시킨 것이 아니라 형 아론, 누나 미리암까지도 복음을 각인시켜서 시대적으로 쓰임받을 수 있도록 준비한 것이다. 그래서 성경을 보게되면 모세 3남매가 아주 귀하게 쓰임받는다. 그것이 바로 요게벳의 신앙교육 때문이었다. 요게벳의 결단이 엄청난 열매를 맺어서 가문을 살리는 역사가 나타난다. 그런데 요게벳의 헌신이 그것으로 끝나지 않는다.
민 3:45 이스라엘 자손 중 모든 처음 태어난 자 대신에 레위인을 취하고 또 그들의 가축 대신에 레위인의 가축을 취하라 레위인은 내 것이라 나는 여호와니라
하나님께서 모세와 아론과 미리암만 택한 것이 아니라 레위 족속 전체를 축복으로 인도하신다. 레위족속은 원래 저주받았던 민족이었다. 저주받은 족속이 한 사람 요게벳의 헌신을 통해서 완전히 축복을 받는다. 레위족속은 하나님 앞에 귀하게 쓰임받는 제사 직분을 감당하는 영원한 축복 속에 들어간 족속으로 나타난다. 요게벳의 헌신적인 신앙을 통해서 모세를 통해서 이스라엘 백성 전체가 가나안 땅으로 들어갔을 뿐 아니라 가문까지 살아나는 역사가 나타난 것을 볼 수 있다. 내가 왜 이 말씀을 드리는가. 여러분의 신앙의 결단 하나로 가진 복음의 언약 하나로 여러분 자신 뿐 아니라 여러분 후손 뿐 아니라 여러분 가문이 대대로 축복받는 역사가 나타날 줄로 믿는다. 우리는 요게벳이 잡았던 신앙을 잡게되면 된다. 언약잡고 결단만 하게되면 되어지는 축복이 나타난다.
결론
히 12:2 믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사 부끄러움을 개의치 아니하시더니 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨느니라
모든 문제, 어떤 사건이라 하더라도 해답은 믿음의 주요 그리스도인 줄로 믿는다. 요게벳은 복음, 그리스도 언약을 잡음으로서 완전히 자기 자신 뿐 아니라 이스라엘 백성 자체도 살리는 축복의 역사가 나타난 줄로 믿는다. 이 축복 받는 여러분 되시기를 예수 그리스도 이름으로 축원한다.
