“세상이 감당치 못하는 믿음"

“ (이런 사람은 세상이 감당치 못하도다) 저희가 광야와 산중과 암혈과 토굴에 유리하였느니라 이 사람들이 다 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았으나 약속을 받지 못하였으니 이는 하나님이 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비하셨은즉 우리가 아니면 저희로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이니라.”
(히브리서 11:38-40)
서론
옛날에 유대 나라에 한 청년이 사랑하는 처녀와 약혼을 했다고 한다. 그는 장사를 하러 떠나면서 약혼녀에게 이렇게 말했다고 한다, “내가 세상을 한바퀴 돌면서 돈을 많이 벌어올테니 돌아오면 성대한 결혼식을 합시다.” 두 사람은 행복한 미래를 꿈꾸며 굳게 서로에게 약속을 했다. 청년은 먼 지방에 도착하자 마자 약혼자 에게 편지를 썼다고 한다. 내가 잘 도착했습니다. 열심히 사업을 해서 돈을 벌어 행복한 가정 꾸리려 하니 그때까지만 참고 기다려달라 썼다. 그런데 그 청년은 사업이 잘못되어 가지고 있던 재산을 모두 날리게 되었다. 그래서 집으로 갈수도 없고 약혼녀에게 편지도 쓸수 없는 상황이 되어 많은 고생을 했다. 그렇게 10년이 지났다. 10년 후에 마침내 많은 고생끝에 성공을 하게 되었다. 10년만에 그렇게 고향에 돌아왔고 궁금해졌다. 과연 내 약혼녀가 아직까지도 기다리고 있을까. 희망을 가지고 약혼녀를 찾아갔다. 놀랍게도 그 약혼녀는 변함없이 그 청년을 기다리고 있었다고 한다. 이 청년은 너무나도 감격스러웠다. 그 약혼녀의 손을 잡고 물어봤다고 한다. 그동안 참으로 많은 어려움과 고통이 있었을텐데 어떻게 10년 동안 나를 기다릴수 있었소 물었다. 약혼녀가 들어가던 오래된 편지 한장을 가지고 나왔다. 이것은 10년전에 당신이 나에게 보낸 편지 입니다. 여기에 분명히 당신은 분명히 돌아가겠다고 나에게 약속을 했다. 나는 그 약속을 믿고 위로를 받으며 지금까지 당신을 기다려왔다. 그렇게 두사람은 행복한 삶을 살게 되었다. 참으로 아름다운 이야기이다. 결국은 믿음의 열매는 아름답다 라는것을 보여주는것같다. 가정에서도 서로간에 믿음이 있을때 아름다운 열매를 맺을수 있다. 하나님과 우리의 관계도 믿음을 통해 아름다운 관계를 가질수 있다.
본론
1. 구약 성도가 누린 믿음 Faith enjoyed by believers in the Old Testament
1) 보이지 않는 증거 The evidence of the unseen

우리가 지금까지 11-12장 믿음장에 대해서 배웠다. 많은 사람들이 이야기 하는 믿음의 영웅들 이라는 사람들에 대해 자세히 배웠다. 믿음장 중에서 결론에 해당되는 말씀이 오늘 말씀이다. 오늘 믿음장에 결론에 해당되는 이 말씀은 대단히 중요한 말씀이다. 38절 말씀 보게 되면 “이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못하느니라” 라고 말씀하고 있다. 그러면서 이야기 하기를 “그들이 광야와 산과 동굴과 토굴에 유리하였느니라” 라고 나와있다. 무슨 말씀인가. 이들은 믿음을 생명보다 더 귀한것으로 알고 여겼다는것이다. 39절, 이 사람들은 다 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았다 라고 하고있다. 이 모두가 말씀으로 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았다는거다. 참 중요한 이야기 이다. 말씀을 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받는데, 확실한 증거를 현장에서 받았다 이거다. 이것이 11장에 나타난 내용 이었다. 여기서 잡을것은, 히 11:1 에 보면, “믿음은 바라는것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는것들의 증거니” 라고 나와있다. 보이지는 않았지만 믿음으로 말미암아 약속하신것의 증거를 확실하게 잡았다 이 말이다. 그러면 보이지 않는 증거가 무엇인가 이것이다. 확실히 잡아야겠다. 이들이 보이지 않는 증거를 잡았다는 것은, 언약의 주인공 되신 예수 그리스도를 붙잡았다는거다. 이들이 잡은 언약의 주인공 되신 그리스도 때문에 생명까지도 아까지지 아니하고 이 믿음을 지켰다는거다.
2) 약속된 것 The promise

39절 마지막에 보게 되면 “믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았으나 약속된것을 받지 못했다고 나와있다. 많은 구약의 모든 영웅들이 증거를 받았음에도 불구하고 약속된것을 받지 못했다 이말이다. 그렇다면 약속된것이 무엇인가. 이것은 예수 그리스도 통해서 하나님께서 약속하신, 인간의 근본적인 문제를 해결해 주시겠다는 약속은 받지 못했다는거다. 다시 말씀 드리면, 믿음으로 만 살았고 구원의 완성은 그들이 받지 못했다는 말이다. 구약의 모든 성도들은 증거만을 받은 사람들이라 말씀 드렸다. 증거, 그러니까 그리스도만 받았다는 이야기다. 예를 들면 구약 시대 모든 성도들은 죄를 용서함 받기 위해서 성전에 제물을 가지고 가서 번제물, 희생제물을 드려야만 해결 받았다. 그런데 그 문제를 가지고 양을 잡음으로 순간적으로 문제가 해결 되지만 근본적으로는 그 문제가 해결되지 않는거다.
우리는 그리스도께서 직접 오셔서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가심으로 완전히 증거를 받았다. 히브리서 9:12에 보게 되면 우리가 받은것에 대해 정확하게 나와있다. “염소와 송아지의 피로 하지 아니하고 오직 자기의 피로 영원한 속죄를 이루사 단번에 성소에 들어가셨느니라.” 구약 시대에는 염소와 송아지를 가지고 제사를 지냄으로 죄를 용서함 받았지만 매번 죄를 지을때마다 짐승을 가져와서 제사를 드리고 용서함을 받아야 했던거다. 그런데 예수님께서 오셔서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가심으로 우리의 죄를 완전하게 해결하셨다. 참제사장으로 오셔서 완전히 우리 죄를 해결하시고 근본적인 죄문제 해결하신거다. 예수 그리스도 믿는 사람은 과거의 죄에 붙잡힐 필요하 전혀 없는거다. 히 10:12에 보면 “오직 그리스도는 죄를 위하여 한 영원한 제사를 드리시고 하나님 우편에 앉으사". 우리를 영원한 고통과 저주속에 있게한 죄를 완전히 사하시고 이제는 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉아계신다 이말이다. 예수님께서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가심으로 말미암아 모든 사망의 권세가 무너진거다. 부활 하셔서 하나님 보좌 우편에 왕으로 계시다 이말이다. 그리고 우리 문제 해결하신 그분이 하늘의 왕 되신다. 엡 1:13에 보면 “ 진리의 말씀 곧 너희의 구원의 복음을 듣고 그 안에서 또한 믿어 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았다" 라고 이야기 하고있다. 이 복음을 듣고 믿음으로 말미암아 하나님의 성령이 우리 안에 들어오시는거다. 그래서 우리를 평생 인도하신다는거다. 우리를 지켜주시는것이다. 그렇게 인간의 근본 문제가 완전히 해결 된거다. 약속된것 이라는 말은 그리스도 께서 오시고 십자가에 못박혀 죽으시고 부활하심으로 말미암아 인간의 근본문제가 해결된, 약속하신것을 이루신것을 말한다.
2. 신약 성도가 누리는 믿음 Faith that the believers of the New Testament enjoyed
1) 더 좋은 것 Something better for us

구약에 유명했던 모세 다윗 솔로몬 이런 대단한 사람들도 이것을 누리지 못했는데 지금 우리가 누리고 있다는거다. 우리는 놀라우신 은혜로 하나님께서 약속하신것을 직접 받았다. 그런데 40절에 놀라운 말씀 말하고있다. “이는 하나님이 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비 하셨은즉" 이라고 나왔다. 더 좋은것은 무엇을 의미 하는가 이말이다. 그것은 바로 예수그리스도 그 자체를 나타내는것이다. 약속된것을 받을때, 그리스도께서 십자가에서 우리의 모든 문제 완전히 해결 하셨지만 그 문제도 해결받았지만 이제는 그리스도 자체를 받게 되었다는거다. 이것을 알기 위해서는 마 11:11에 나타나는 세례요한의 기록을 보면 알수가있다. 예수님께서 말씀 하시기를 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르로니 여자가 낳은 자 중에 세례 요한보다 큰 이가 일어남이 없도다. 그러나 천국에서는 극히 작은 자라도 그보다 크니라. 어떻게 보면 이해할수 없는 말을 예수님이 하신거다. 세례요한이 얼마나 크길래 모세, 다윗왕, 여호수아 그들보다 더 대단하다고 하시는거다. 그런데 예수님께서 분명히 말씀 하시기를 세례 요한보다 큰 이가 일어남이 없도다. 라고 하셨다. 무슨 말씀인가 하니, 그 사람들은 증거를 가지고 있었지만 세례 요한은 친히 예수님이 오신것을 직접 본 사람인것이다. 천지를 창조하신 말씀되신 하나님이 육신을 입고 이땅에 오신것을, 그 거룩하신 분을 본 사람이니 이 만한 큰 자가 없다 이말이다. 구약의 많은 사람들보다 더 큰 은혜를 세례 요한이 받았다는 말이다. 놀라운 이야기가 또 나온다. “그러나 천국에서는 극히 작은 자라도 그보다 크니라". 천국에 가게 되면 세례 요한이 크지만 극히 작은자가 그보다 더 크다는거다. 세례요한은 예수님을 직접 보는 어마어마한 축복과 은혜를 본 사람이지만 예수님께서 죽으심과 부활하심으로 사역을 하신것을 누리지 못했다는거다. 극히 작은자 라고 나온것은 우리를 의미한다. 우리가 천국 가면 세례요한보다 훨씬 더 크다는거다. 어마어마한 축복 가운데 있다는거다. 왜 그렇냐는거다. 고전 3:16에 나온다. “너희는 너희가 하나님의 성전인 것과 하나님의 성령이 너희안에 계신것을 알지 못하느냐." 세례요한은 큰자로 칭함을 받았지만 성령이 그의 안에 들어가는 축복을 받지는 못했다. 우리는 예수 그리스도를 영접하면서 하나님의 성령이 우리 안에 그 순간에 들어오시게 된다. 분명히 이야기 하고 있다. 너희가 하나님의 성전인것과 하나님의 성령이 너희 안에 계신것을 알지 못하느냐. 여러분 우리 안에 계신분은 하나님의 성령이다. 지난 시간에 이사야를 통해 하나님 보좌의 놀라운 영광을 바라보았다. 그분이 영으로 우리 안에 들어와 계시다는거다. 믿으시나. 어마어마한 영광 가운데 우리가 있는것이다. 우리가 힘없고 언약하게 있지만 그럴 존재가 아니다 우리는. 천지를 창조하시고 온세상 주관 하시는 그분의 영이 내 안에 계시다 이 말이다. 그렇게 더 좋은것을 우리가 받았다 이 말이다. 믿으시나. 이것을 정말 누려야겠다. 우리가 보통 존재가 아닌것을 확실하게 누리고 자존감 가지고 살아야한다.
2) 온전한 믿음 Perfect faith
히 Hebrews 10:14
행 Acts 1:8
이것으로 끝나지 않는다, 40절에 마지막에 보게 되면, “우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라". 여기서 “우리” 와 “그들” 이 나온다. “그들" 이라 함은 구약의 모든 성도들을 말한다. 이 사람들은 창 3:15의 여자의 후손 에 대한 언약을 확실히 붙잡고 있던 사람이다. 그분에 대한 약속을 분명히 붙잡고 그런 믿음을 통해서 그들이 승리 할수 있었다. 우리들은 어떻나, 그분 되신 예수님께서 십자가에서 성취함으로 성공하신 그리스도의 언약 잡은자들 이라는거다. 히 10:14, 놀라운 말씀 말하고 있다. “그가 거룩하게 된 자들을 한번의 제사로 영원히 온전하게 하였느니라". 여기서 “그가 거룩하게 된 자들” 이 누구를 말하나, 지금까지 복음을 통해서 말씀을 들음으로 거룩하게 된 구약의 모든 성도들을 나타낸다. 그들이 예수 그리스도 통해서 영원히 온전함을 받았다 이말이다. 십자가의 구원 통해 온전함을 받은 우리가 되었다. 마찬가지로 그들도 똑같이 믿음과 십자가의 구원 통해서 온전함을 받았다. 구약의 모든 사람들은 십자가의 완성으로 통해서 그들도 구원받게 되고 우리도 받았다 이말이다. 그들은 증거만 가지고 있었지만 실현된것을 이제야 받게 되었다는거다. 그런데 다시한번 보게 되면, “우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라” 라고 되어있다. 우리가 아니면 안되는 일이 또 있다는거다. 그것은 바로 행1:8 이다. “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 땅끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라" 하는 말씀이다. 그 사람들은 이미 생이 끝나버려서 미래에 대한것은 어떻게 할수가 없다. 그러나 땅끝까지 복음이 증거되어야만이 예수님이 오시게 되고 새하늘과 새땅이 이땅에 임하게 되는거다. 새하늘과 새땅, 주님께서 오시는 재림을 맞이하기 위해서는 우리가 그리 해야 한다는거다. 하늘의 성령을 받은 우리가 가서 복음을 증거함을 통해서 새 하늘과 새 땅을 이룰수 있는 그 일을 우리가 할수 있게 되었다는것 이다. 이 축복이 저희들에게 주어졌다. 그래서 우리가 받은 축복이 어마어마 하다. 그 이유로 세례요한에 대해서 천국에서는 극히 작은자가 너보다 크다 하는거다.
3. 우리가 누릴 믿음 Faith that we must enjoy
1) 성삼위 하나님 The Triune God
성부 하나님: 창 Genesis 3:15, 욜 Joel 2:28-29
성자 하나님: 요 John 19:30, 롬 Romans 10:10
성령 하나님: 행 Acts 2:1-4, 막 Mark 16:20
그렇다면 이것을 어떻게 우리가 믿음으로 누리고 확실히 잡을것인가 이거다. 우리가 올해는 미스바 기도 운동을 통해 축복과 응답을 받아야 겠다고 년초부터 이야기 하고있다. 호흡마다 항상 기도 하라고 선포 되었다. 하나님이여 그리스도의 영으로 충만하게 허락 하시고 아홉가지 보좌의 축복을 누리게 하옵소서. 이것을 위해 먼저 잡을것은 성삼위 하나님을 확실히 잡아야한다. 먼저 성부 하나님을 잡아야겠다. 성부 하나님은 우리에게 말씀을 주셨다. 말씀을 주셨는데 가장 중요한 말씀 두가지만 예를 들면, 첫번째는 창3:15의 여자의 후손 이라는 말씀 주셨다. 두번째 중요한 말씀이 요엘서 2:28-29에 성령을 보내주시겠다는 약속이다. 우리 구원은 그리스도를 통해 이루어 지고 세계복음화는 성령을 통해 이루어지는거다. 그 말씀을 하나님께서 약속 하신거다. 그래서 성자 하나님께서 예수님으로 오셔서 이루신거다. 인간의 모든 문제를 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가심으로 다 이루었다라고 말씀하신거다. 그리고 롬 10:10에 누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 얻게 될것이라 하신거다. 성령께서 지금 역사 하신다. 예수 그리스도를 믿고 영접 하는 자마다 함께 역사 하시며 능력으로 역사 하신다. 그리고 마가복음 16:20에 함께, 복음을 증거하는 자 마다 표적을 주시겠다 했다. 이것을 우리가 말씀으로만 듣고 생각만 하지 말고 정말로 누려야겠다. 성삼위 하나님은 상징적으로 아는 하나님이 아니라 실질적으로 나와 함께 하시는 하나님이라는 사실을 분명히 잡고 그분과 교제가 이루어져야 한다. 그렇기 때문에 우리가 기도할때, “하나님, 그리스도의 영으로 충만하게 저에게 임하게 해주옵소서" 이렇게 기도 하시라는거다.
2) 5력 Five powers
영력 Spiritual power: 요 John 1:12, 14:14, 눅 Luke 10:17
지력 Intellectual power: 사 Isaiah 50:4
체력 Physical power: 사 Isaiah 40:31
경제력 Financial power: 신 Deuteronomy 28:12
인력 Manpower: 행 Acts 16:1
이 그리스도를 누리게 되면 우리가 당연히 누릴 다섯가지 힘을 얻게 된다. 성삼위 하나님 붙잡으면 오력을 받는다. 첫번째, 영력, 영의 힘을 받게된다. 먼저 영력은 무엇인가, “영접하는자 곧 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니" 했다. 어마어마한 보좌에 계신 그분의 자녀된 신분과 권세를 우리가 이땅에서 누리게 되었다 이말이다. 어떤 문제이든지 예수 그리스도 이름으로 기도만 하면 주님께서 친히 내가 이루리라 라고 말씀 하셨다. 믿고 기도하는 순간에 역사가 나타날줄 믿는다. 나에게 어떻게 그런 역사가 일어날까 생각하지 말고 정말로 믿어보시라, 그러면 나타난다. 하나님의 자녀이기 때문에 눅10:17 말씀과 마찬가지로, 예수 이름 잡고 기도할때 하늘에서 사단이 번개처럼 떨어진다고 나와있다. 우리가 성삼위 하나님을 계속 누리며 기도하게 되면 우리에게 지혜를 주실것이다. 이사야 50:4에 말씀하고 있다. “주 여호와께서 학자들의 혀를 내게 주사 나로 곤고한 자를 말로 어떻게 도와 줄줄을 알게 하시고 아침마다 깨우치시되 나의 귀를 깨우치사 학자들 같이 알아듣게 하시도다." 사람을 살릴수 있는 지혜와 복음을 알아들을수 있는 귀를 열게 해주시는 축복을 받게 하신다는거다. 세번째 하나님께서 주시는 약속은 체력 이다. 사 40:31 말씀이다. “여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새힘을 얻게된다” 라고 하셨다. “앙망” 하는것은 날마다 기도 하는것을 말한다. 그러면 새 힘을 주신다고 하셨다. “독수리의 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비치 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤치 아니 하리로다." 정말 이 힘을 얻으시는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 이 힘은 기도를 통해 이루어 진다는거다. 뿐만 아니다, 하나님께서는 또 경제의 축복 주신다고 하셨다. 경제 또한 하나님께서 주장 하신다. 신명기 28:12에 우리가 그리스도 잡고 언약 잡는 순간에 “여호와께서 너를 위하여 하늘의 아름다운 보고를 여시사 네 땅에 때를 따라 비를 내리시고 네 손으로 하는 모든 일에 복을 주시리니 네가 많은 민족에게 꾸어줄지라도 너는 꾸지 아니할것이요.” 세상 사람들이 전혀 모르고 이해 못하는 말이다. 그러나 이것은 하나님의 약속이다. 우리가 하나님 언약잡고 정말 기도 할때 하나님께서 “너를 위하여 모든 최고의 축복을 허락해 주겠다 이말이다. 그 뿐만 아니라 인력 까지 주시겠다고 하셨다. 다시 말씀드리면 사람을 붙여주시겠다 하시는거다. 행 16:1 이다. “바울이 더베와 루스드라에도 이르매 거기 디모데라 하는 제자가 있으니 어머니는 믿는 유대의 여자요 아버지는 헬라인이라" 라고 나와있다. 바울이 복음을 전하러 가는데 하나님께서는 미리 디모데라는 자를 예비 해놓고 계셨다는 말이다. 이것이 무슨 말인가, 우리가 그리스도 잡고 언약 잡게 되면 하나님께서는 내가 일을 할수 있도록 모든 문을 열으시고 사람을 붙여주신다는 거다. 어려움 당하는 중에 계시나. 내가 사람을 찾아다니는게 아니라, 내가 그리스도 붙잡을때 주님께서 해결할 사람을 붙여주신다 이 말이다. 얼마나 좋은 방법인가. 얼마나 쉬운 방법인가. 이걸 모르고 사람들은 눈을 붉히고 사람을 찾아다니다가 사기 당하고 어려움 당한다. 하나님께서는 가장 확실한 사람 붙여주실줄 믿는다. 응답 받으시는 여러분 되시기를 바란다.
결론 Conclusion
히 Hebrews 13:8
말씀 맺겠다. 히 13:8 말씀이다. 예수 그리스도는 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하시다. 예수 그리스도는 구약시대 모세가 있을때나 예수님 이땅에 계셨을때나 지금이나 항상 똑같이 역사하신다. 창조하신분이 바로 예수님이셨고 심판하러 오실분이 또 예수님 이시다. 우리를 지켜주시는 분이 예수님 이시다. 여러분들이 오직 그리스도만 붙잡게 되면 영원한 해답, 완전한 해답을 붙잡게 될줄을 믿는다. 이 언약 잡고 완전한 해답을 받게되는 여러분 될줄을 믿는다. 이 언약 잡고 한주간 큰 응답받는 여러분 되시기를 예수님 이름으로 축원한다.
Faith of Whom the World Was Not Worthy (Hebrews 11:38-40)

“38 Of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. 39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
Introduction
There was a man who got engaged to a woman that he loved in a Jewish land. Before their marriage, the man told his fiancé that he is going to travel the world, make a lot of money, and promised a grand wedding. They promised each other for a happy marriage and wedding, and the man left a letter for his fiancé before he went to set up his business. In the letter, the man wrote that he arrived well and safe, and promised to make a lot of money from his business so requested for his fiancé to wait for him. He promised that when he returns, they will get married and live a happy life together. But something went wrong with the man’s business and he ended up losing everything. With this result, the man felt that he couldn’t return home nor write to his fiancé about what had happened. The man suffered a lot and after 10 years passed, he finally succeeded. He returned back to his homeland after 10 years and he was curious about his fiancé if she was still waiting for him. With his hope, he went to go visit his fiancé and surprisingly, without any change, she was still waiting for him. The man was so moved and held her hand, and asked her, despite all of the hardships and suffering that probably came to her; how did she wait to wait for him for 10 years? The fiancé came back to him with the letter that he wrote her 10 years ago and said that this was the letter he wrote her 10 years ago. In this letter, the man promised her that he will absolutely come back. She believed in that promise and received comfort from that letter, and that was how she waited for him for 10 years. In the end, they were able to live a happy life. This is a very beautiful story. This shows how beautiful our fruits of our faith are. In our families, when we have faith, you may bear beautiful fruit of faith. In our relationship with God and with our faith, we are able to bear a beautiful relationship and fruits of faith with God. Hebrew 11 talks about faith as well as the heroes of faith in the Bible. Today’s scripture talks about the conclusion of the heroes of faith in the book of Hebrews. This is a very important message.

1) The evidence of the unseen
Verses 38-39 - They saw their faith as the most precious thing in their lives. Verse 39 - Everyone received a good testimony of their faith. With what? They received a good testimony through God’s word. This is very important. With faith and God’s word, they were able to have good testimony of their faith and obtained assurance in their fields.
This is the answer that was seen in Hebrews 11.
We must hold onto Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” - We may not see it but through faith in God’s word, we are able to obtain absolute assurance. If that is so, what are the invisible things that they weren’t able to see? We must hold onto this. The invisible things that they weren’t able to see and evidence of faith is referring to holding onto Jesus Christ. By holding onto Jesus Christ, the core of their faith, they were to protect their faith and receive life.
Verse 39 - The main figures of faith in the Old Testament, they were not able to receive the promise as written in this Biblical passage. What does that mean? God promised Jesus Christ who will solve the fundamental problems of mankind. They were not able to receive this promise. In other words, they were in a time period where they could only live through their faith in God. But that also means that they were not able to receive and experience the absolute fulfillment of salvation. Those who are people of God, they received good testimony, this is referring to the promise of Jesus Christ.
2) The promise
In the Old Testament, in order to receive forgiveness of their sins, they had to bring a blood sacrifice to the temple and shed its blood. Even though they brought the blood sacrifice to receive forgiveness of their sins, they were not able to receive absolute and fundamental forgiveness of their sins. But for us, Jesus Christ came to Earth, died on the cross while bearing all of our sins, and gave us complete redemption of our sins once and for all.
Hebrews 9:12 “Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” - Every time they sinned in the Old Testament, they had to bring a blood sacrifice to receive forgiveness of their sins. When Jesus Christ came to Earth, He bore all of our sins, died on the cross for us. As the True Priest, He completely forgave our sins. He forgave our sins fundamentally. Those who believe in Jesus Christ, there is no need for us to hold onto and be bound by our old past of sins and curses anymore.
Hebrews 10:12 “But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.” - All of our curses and disasters that made us fall into the fate and destiny of death, through Jesus’ coming, He completely abolished the law of death. Jesus Christ came and bore all our sins, died on the cross, and forgave our sins once and for all. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He completely abolished the law of the fate and destiny of death. Now, Jesus Christ resurrected and is sitting at the right hand of God. Jesus Christ solved all of our problems and is sitting on the royal throne of heaven as the True King.
Ephesians 1:13 “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” - When the gospel is preached to us, we receive the promise of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. The Holy Spirit will guide and protect us forever. This means that our fundamental problems of mankind have been solved. What has been promised means that Jesus Christ came down to Earth, died on the cross, and resurrected. This means that through the death of Jesus and the event of the cross, Jesus solved the fundamental problems of mankind once and for all. All of the main and famous figures in the Bible, like Abraham, David, and Daniel couldn’t enjoy this fulfillment of Jesus Christ because they didn’t get to experience it directly. But, we have received God’s promise directly.
2. Faith that the Believers of the New Testament Enjoyed
1) Something better for us
Verse 40 - What is something better prepared for us that was given by God? That was Jesus Christ. The promised Jesus Christ came down to Earth, solved all of our sins on the cross, and as a result, we have received Jesus Christ into our lives directly. He entered our lives directly.
In order to know this, we must look at Matthew 11:11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” - This is what Jesus Christ said. If you look at this, Jesus Christ said something that didn’t make sense. How great was John the Baptist that he was someone who was considered greater than Moses, Abraham, and Joshua in the eyes of Jesus? But Jesus said that John the Baptist is greater than them. This is because those great figures in the Bible had evidence of faith but John the Baptist saw Jesus Christ directly in front of him. He saw Jesus Christ coming down to Earth, the Creator, before Him. That is why no one was considered greater than John the Baptist. That is why many people say that John the Baptist received the greatest blessing in the New Testament. What is more astounding than this is that when you go to heaven, John the Baptist is considered great on Earth but there is someone greater in heaven. John the Baptist may have received great grace from God because he directly met Jesus Christ on Earth but he couldn’t enjoy and see the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ nor the descent of the Holy Spirit into man. The ones who are considered greater in heaven than John the Baptist are referring to us. We are greater than John the Baptist in heaven. This is a great blessing. We are in the midst of a great blessing.
This is because, as it is written in 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” - John the Baptist saw Jesus Christ directly but he wasn’t able to see the day when mankind received the Holy Spirit. The moment we accept Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes inside of us. We become a temple of God. This Bible verse absolutely tells us that we are a temple of God and the Holy Spirit dwells in us. The being inside of us is the Spirit of God. Last week, we spoke about the great glory of God spoken through prophet Isaiah and Isaiah was able to see the heavenly throne of God. The royal throne of God is inside of you. Do you believe in this? You are in the midst of great glory. We are not lacking and weak beings, this is a great misunderstanding. The Creator God who created the heaven and Earth is inside of us. Jesus is saying that we have received the greatest thing. Do you believe in this? We must enjoy this. We are not just mere, ordinary beings. We need to enjoy the great blessings that we received as children of God. It doesn’t end here.
2) Perfect faith
Verse 40 - This is a very astounding message. Without us, there is no perfection. They should not be made perfect apart from us. “They” is referring to the people in the Old Testament. They held onto the covenant of Genesis 3:15. They held onto God’s promise and had faith in God’s promise. What about us? We are enjoying Jesus Christ who died on the cross and gave us life.
Hebrews 10:14 “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” - We have been sanctified through Jesus Christ. We have been perfected forever because of Jesus Christ. Through the event of the cross, we have been perfected. In the same way, through faith and cross, they have received complete salvation. So if you look at this, in the Old Testament, they received salvation by believing in the hope of the cross of Jesus Christ and we have also received salvation because of the event of the cross. It is written, they shouldn’t be made perfect apart from us in verse 40. What does this mean?
That is Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. ” - They couldn’t do anything regarding the future. Jesus Christ would come again once the whole Earth receives the gospel and the new world will come. In order for the new world to come and for Jesus Christ to come, we must testify the gospel to all people in this world. We who have received the filling of the Holy Spirit, we now have the role to do the work of sharing the gospel. This blessing has been given to us. The blessing given to us is tremendous. That is why John the Baptist is considered less than us. Then, how can we enjoy this faith and blessing? Through the Mizpah Movement, we must do the prayer movement. Whenever we breathe, we should pray. We should pray for God to fill us with His Spirit and pray for the 9 blessings of the heavenly throne to be upon you. From this, we must hold onto the Triune God.
3. Faith that We Must Enjoy
1) The Triune God
Hold onto the Triune God. Triune God gave us the word of God. There were two important messages that God gave us and the first important message is Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”. And the second important message is the promise of the Holy Spirit in Joel 2:28-29 “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.”. Through Jesus Christ, we received salvation and we can complete the work of world evangelism through the Holy Spirit. This is what God fulfilled in our lives.
When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He said that He finished all things in John 19:30 “So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”. Also, it is written in Romans 10:10 “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”.
Acts 2:1-4 “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” - The Holy Spirit is working right now. The Holy Spirit works in those who are saved. The Holy Spirit works with power.
Mark 16:20 “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.” - It is written that God will show us signs. We shouldn’t just think of these as words written in the Bible but we should truly enjoy them. We must hold onto the triune God and enjoy His presence. When we pray to God, may the filling of the Holy Spirit come upon us. When we ask the Holy Spirit to come inside of us, then we can receive the 5 powers.
2) Five powers
Spiritual power: John 1:12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” - The blessing and authority as a child of God. We can enjoy the authority as a child of God because God, the Creator, has given us this source of power.
If we pray anything in God’s name, He promised us that He will answer us as it is written in John 14:14 “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”. The moment we pray, great authority and answers will be given to us. Don’t just end with praying, we must pray with faith and with the authority that we possess.
Luke 10:17 “Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, 'Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.' ” -When we pray, the great power of Satan is destroyed and has no choice but to fall down on his knees. When we pray with the triune God, God will give us wisdom.
Intellectual power: Isaiah 50:4 “The Lord God has given Me the tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned.” - God has given us the wisdom to save others and to share the gospel.
Physical power: Isaiah 40:31 “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” - The third power that God promised to give us is physical power. What does it mean to wait on the Lord? It means to pray. When we do this, then God promised us power. Obtain this power. We can receive this power from prayer.
Financial power: Deuteronomy 28:12 “The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.” - Not only that but God promised great financial power. God is the one who gives us the blessings of finance. Many people of the world don’t know this fact but this is God’s promise to His children. When we hold onto God’s covenant and pray, then for us, God promised us the greatest blessings.
Manpower: Acts 16:1 “Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek.” - God promised us manpower. In other words, God promised that He will send us people and workers. When Paul went to go share the gospel in the field, God prepared a disciple, Timothy. When we hold out Christ and His covenant, then God will attach us workers who can help us to do God’s work. Do you have any hardships? You don’t need to go and try to find people to help you but God will attach you people who you need and will help you. Then, this is so easy. This is such a helpful way. But what do we do? We go searching for people to help us. That is why people receive more hardships and end up getting scammed. When God attaches you to people, it will give you absolute assurance. May you receive answers.
Conclusion
Hold onto Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” - In the Old Testament, in the time of Moses and even now, Jesus Christ is the same. Jesus Christ was the one who created the world and is also the same Jesus who will return for His second coming. He is protecting us even now. When you hold onto only Jesus Christ, then you will receive all answers and blessings. May you receive great answers and blessings throughout this week in the name of Jesus Christ.
