“수넴여인 아들의 부활의미”

“여자들은 자기의 죽은 자들을 부활로 받아들이기도 하며 또 어떤 이들은 더 좋은 부활을 얻고자 하여 심한 고문을 받되 구차히 풀려나기를 원하지 아니햐였으며.” (히11:35)
서론
미국의 유명한 소설가 펄 벅 (Pearl Buck) 에 대한 이야기를 봤다. 그 사람은 1933년도에 < 대지 > 라는 소설로 노벨상을 받았던 사람이다. 이 사람이 1960년도에 한국에 방문 하였다고 한다. 그 사람이 한국에 방문해 경주로 가는 도중에 길에서 이상한 광경을 본거다. 한 농부가 소 달구지를 끌고 가는 모습을 본거다. 그 소 달구지 위에는 작은 볏집이 얹어져있었다고 한다. 그런데 그옆에 농부가 함께 걸어가는데 자기 지게에도 볏집을 지고 가는거다. 펄 벅은 그것을 보고 참 이상한 광경이다 생각하며 통역사를 통해 물어보기로 했다. 당신은 소 달구지가 있는데 거기에 타지도 않고 왜 굳이 무겁게 볏집을 몸에 지고 있느냐 물었다. 그 농부가 대답을 했다, 내가 어떻게 그럴수가 있겠습니까, 저도 일을 했지만, 저 소도 하루종일 힘들게 일 했으니 짐을 서로가 나눠 가져야지요. 펄 벅은 생각지도 못한 농부의 대답을 듣고 너무나 감탄 했다고 한다. 나는 저 장면 하나로 한국에서 보고싶은것을 다 보았다, 농부가 소의 짐을 거들어 주는것을 보고 한국의 위대함을 볼수가 있었다, 라고 말했다고 한다. 그렇게 미국에 돌아간 이후에 이런 이야기 했다고 한다, 한국에서 본 그 모습은 세상에서 제일 아름다운 모습 이었다 라고. 우리는 그런 모습을 봐도 딱히 크게 와닿지 않는다. 흔히 우리에게 볼수 있는 광경 이기 때문에 그렇기도하다. 그런데 펄 벅의 눈에는 이해할수 없이 희안한 광경 인거다. 그것은 한국 사람이 가지고 있는 ‘정' 이라는 것을 몰라서 그런것 같다. 상대방을 배려하고 사랑하며 생각하는 마음이 근본적으로 깔려 있는것을 알수가 있다.
1. 수넴여인의 믿음
1) 하나님을 사랑한 여인 - 왕하 2 Kings 4:8-10
지난 시간에는 우리가 사르밧 과부에 대해서 보았다. 그 과부의 아들이 죽었다가 엘리야의 기도를 통해 다시 살아나는것을 보았다. 오늘은 구약에 죽었다 살아난 또 다른 사람, 엘리사를 통해서 살게된 수넴 여인의 아들에 대한 이야기다.
오늘 말씀은 열왕기하 4:8-37 에 걸쳐 나오는 내용이다. 왕하 4:8절에 보면, “하루는 엘리사가 수넴에 이르렀더니 거기에 한 귀한 여인이 그를 간권하여 음식을 먹게 하였으므로 엘리사가 그 곳을 지날때마다 음식을 먹으러 그리로 들어갔더라” 라고 기록하고 있다. 엘리사는 그의 스승 엘리야가 갈멜산에서 엄청난 기적을 일으킨것을 보고 시간을 맞춰 자기 스승 엘리야가 있었던 그 갈멜산에 가서 기도를 드리고 있었던거다. 엘리사가 그 먼길을 걸어가는것을 보고있던 수넴 이라는 동네에 사는 여인 그를 보고, 아 저분이 하나님의 종인데 너무나 수고하시는구나 생각해 지나가는 엘리사에게 우리집에 들러 식사좀 하고 가세요 권한거다. 한번이 아니라 지나갈때 마다 문앞에 서서 들어오셔서 식사좀 하고 가세요 하고 대접을 한것이다. 엘리사를 사랑하는 마음도 있지만 사실은 하나님을 사랑하는 뜨거운 마음 가지고 하나님의 종을 정성껏 모시려 한거다. 수넴 여인은 거기서 끝나지 아니하고 자기 남편하게 이야기해 하나님의 종 엘리사가 피곤 하니 갈때 쉬기도 하고 묵상하고 기도도 할수 있는 방을 하나 준비해서 침상과 책상을 두어 그가 언제든 쉬고 갈수 있게 합시다 한거다. 그러니 엘리사가 와서 피곤할때 마다 와서 잠도 자고 쉬고 묵상도 하고 기도도 하고 책도 보면서 편안한 시간을 가질수 있었다.
2) 부름받은 수넴여인 - 왕하 2 Kings 4:13-16, 19
엘리사가 그렇게 대접 받다 보니 너무나 감사한 마음이 든거다. 그래서 어느날 그 집에 가서 수넴 여인을 부른다. 왕하 4:13에 보면, 지금 우리를 위해 세심하게 배려를 하고 있는데, 내가 당신을 위해 무엇을 하기를 원하는가, 왕이든지 장군 에게든지 누구에게든 내가 부탁할수 있으니 나한테 이야기만 해라 그러면 내가 도와주겠다 말한거다. 그러니 이 여인이 뭐라고 대답 하나, 저는 제 백성중에 거하고 있습니다, 쉽게 말하면 저는 그저 평범 하게 살고있습니다, 괜찮습니다 하며 거절 한거다. 참 진심 어린 이야기를 하니 엘리사가 더욱 더 감동을 해서 자신의 종 게하시 에게 물어 저 사람을을 도와줄 방법이 없을까 물은거다. 정성껏 하는 모습을 보고 얼마나 감동을 받았는지, 그냥 넘어가지 않고 보답을 하고 싶었던거다. 그러니까 게하시가 이야기 한다, 내가 알기로는 저 여자분은 아들이 없고 남편이 너무 늙어서 아이를 가질수가 없는것으로 압니다. 엘리사가 그 이야기 듣고 얼마나 기뻤겠나, 하나님앞에 이들에게 응답 달라고 간절히 기도 한거다. 생명은 하나님께서 주시는것 아닌가, 그렇게 하나님께 응답을 받아 엘리사가 종을 통해 수넴 여인을 부른다. 그렇게 엘리사가 수넴 여인에게 이야기 하기를 내년 이맘때쯤에는 너에게 아들이 있게 될것이다 하고 이야기 한다. 그러니 이 여자가 그 말을 듣고 엘리사님, 저를 속이지 마세요, 그것은 있을수 없는일 입니다 라고 답한다. 믿지도 않았는데, 한 해가 지나 그 때가 되니 정말로 아들을 낳게 된거다. 아들을 낳으니 얼마나 기뻤겠나. 생전 소망 이었던 자식을 얻으니 얼마나 감사하겠나. 그렇게 행복하게 살고 있는데 또 문제가 온거다. 이 아이가 조금 자라서 아버지가 밖에 곡식추수하는 곳에 따라가 구경하는데 갑자기 머리가 아파온거다. 그러니 그 아버지가 사람들을 시켜서 이 아이를 속히 어미에게 데려가라 한거다. 그렇게 그 엄마가 자기 아들을 안고 있는데 그대로 그 품에서 죽어버린거다. 얼마나 큰 충격 이었겠나. 우리에게도 이러한 경우가 있다. 우리는 신앙 생활 잘하고 더 잘하려 하는데 더 큰 문제가 닥쳐오는 경우 말이다. 이때에 어떻게 반응하느냐 하는것이 가장 중요한 관건 이다.
2. 하나님의 응답
1) 수넴여인의 믿음 - 왕하 2 Kings 4:22-23, 28
이 수넴여인의 경우 그 면에서 보통 사람들과 완전히 달랐다는것을 볼수가 있다. 아들이 죽었다고 통곡하며 동네방네 소문내는 대신 그 아이를 안고 엘리사를 모셨던 그 방에 데려가 일단 눕힌거다. 그 뒤에 남편에게 말해 사람을 한명 보내 나귀를 준비해 달라, 내가 하나님의 사람 엘리사를 보러 가야겠습니다. 자기 남편은 아무것도 모르는 상황 인거다, 아들이 죽은지도 몰랐다. 남편이 왜 갑자기 갈멜산에 가려고 하나 연유를 물었다. 뭐라고 답하나, 평안합니다 라고 대답했다. 다시 말씀드리면 별거 아닙니다 라는 우리 식으로 말한거다. 아들이 죽자마자 자기는 하나님의 사람, 주의 종을 만나러 가야겠다 하는거다. 왜냐하면 그녀에게는 믿음이 있었다. 내가 구하지도 않은 자녀를 하나님께서 주셨는데 하나님께서 그냥 데려갈 일이 없다는거다. 하나님의 특별한 계획이 있으니 하나님의 종을 만나 이 문제를 해결 해야겠다 한거다. 그래서 사람을 데리고 멈추지 말고 곧장 달려가라 하면서 엘리사에게 간거다. 갈멜산에서 엘리사가 내려다 보니 수넴 여인이 나귀를 타고 자신에게 달려오는거다. 무슨 일이 있구나 느끼고 자기 종 게하시를 보내어 무슨 일인지 알아봐라 묻게 했다. 혹시 남편에게 아니면 아들이나 당신에게 무슨 일이 생기셨습니까 종이 물었다. 그러니 이 여자가 아들이 죽었어요 라고 하는게 아니라, 괜찮아요, 별 문제 없어요, 평안 합니다 하고 대답을 하는거다. 참 믿음이 대단한거다. 그렇게 갈멜산에 가서 엘리사 앞에 마침내 오게된거다. 27절에 산에 이르러 하나님의 사람에게 나가아서 그 발을 안았다 라고 이야기 하고있다. 하나님의 종의 발을 안는거다. 옆에 있던 종 게하시가 왜 이러십니까 말리려고 하니 엘리사가 그 영혼이 괴로워 하는것이 있으니 가만 두라, 무슨 일인지 알아보자 한거다. 그제서야 비로소 엘리사에게 자기 사정을 이야기 한다. 28절에 “내가 내 주께 아들을 구하더이까 나를 속이지 말라고 내가 말하지 아니하더이까 하니", 라고 물은것이다. 내가 언제 자식을 달라고 했습니까, 다시 데려갈 자식이면 왜 죽였습니까 한거다. 이 말인즉슨 하나님께서 주신 아들이 아닙니까? 이 이야기 이다. 하나님의 종이 하나님께 기도해 응답받은 하나님이 주신 아들인데 왜 죽었습니까? 하나님 뜻이 무엇입니까, 물은거다. 그 수넴 여인의 믿음은 하나님 께서 주신 선물은 반드시 하나님께서 지켜 주실거다 하는 확신을 가지고 이야기 한거다.
2) 엘리사의 집중기도 - 왕하 2 Kings 4:29-30, 33-35
그 이야기를 들은 엘리사는 게하시에게 빨리, 그 아무도 만나지 말고 누구와 이야기 하지말고 내 지팡이를 그 아들에 얼굴에 가져다 얹어놓아라 명령한거다. 엘리사는 그렇게 자기 역할이 끝났다고 생각한거다. 그런데 수넴 여인은 거기서 끝내지 않는다. 30절 말씀에 보면, “아이의 어머니가 이르되 여호와께서 살아계심과 당신의 영혼이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세 하노니 내가 당신을 떠나지 아니하리이다” 라고 이야기한다. 당신 기도로 태어난 아들이니 당신이 직접 가서 해주시라 하는 말이다. 엘리사의 스승인 엘리야도 직접 그 아이 위에 엎드려 기도해 했는데, 당신도 그 기도 해달라는 바로 그 간구 이다. 이 믿음에 엘리사는 그 여인을 따라 집을 나선다.
집에 도착하니 먼저 뛰어갔던 게하시가 아이 얼굴에 지팡이를 올려놨는데 아무런 효과가 없습니다 한거다. 엘리사는 자기 방 침실에 뉘여져있는 그 아들을 보고 들어가 문을 닫고 아무도 들어오지 말라 그렇게 둘이 마주한거다. 그렇게 하나님 앞에 기도하기 시작했다. 이 기도는 자기 스승 엘리야가 했던 기도를 그대로 하기 시작한거다. 왕하 4:34에 나타나고 있다, “아이 위에 올라 엎드려 자기 입을 그의 입에 자기 눈을 그의 눈에 자기 손을 그의 손에 대고 그의 몸에 엎드리니 아이의 살이 차차 따듯하더라.” 지난 시간에 말씀 드렸지만, 죽은 시체를 만지고 그 위에 엎드리는것은 자기가 부정한 것을 만짐으로 저주속에 들어가는것을 자처하는 모습임을 알수가 있다. 입에 입 대고 눈에 눈 대고 손을 맞잡고 하는 것은 완전히 내가 이 아이의 죽음 속에 동참 합니다 동참 합니다 하는 의미이다. 율법에 시체를 만지면 저주받을것이다 하는 것은 아무 상관 없을 정도로 내가 이 아이를 위해서 죽겠습니다 하는 말이다. 하나님 종의 목숨을 내어 죽음에 동참하는 그런 간절한 기도 인것이다. 그 간절한 기도를 하는데 아이의 몸이 점점 따듯하게 되는것이 느껴지는거다. 성령께서 역사 하신것이다. 그래도 아직 완전히 돌아오지 않으니 다시 일어나서 방을 도는거다. 그냥 돌아다니는것이 아니라 지속적으로 간절히 하나님께 기도 드린거다. 그리고 다시 엎드려 기도한다. 마침내 35절 말씀에 보면, 아이가 일곱번 재채기를 하고 눈을 떴다 하고 나와있다. 이것이 바로 기도의 능력이다. 혹시 문제 있으신가, 기도 하시기 바란다. 그냥 기도가 아니라 집중으로 하시기를 바란다. 하나님은 살아계신 하나님이시다. 살아계신 하나님께서는 우리 기도를 반드시 듣고 계신다. 이것을 우리가 꼭 붙잡아야 되겠다. 어떤 문제라도 문제될것이 없다 이거다. 전능하신 하나님께서 붙잡기만 하시면 그 문제는 순식간에 해결되는것 이다. 죽은 자를 살리는 그 기적의 역사가 사람의 기도를 통해서 이루어졌는데 하나님의 자녀가 기도하는데 왜 응답을 안해주시겠나. 응답 받는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 이 사실을 우리가 하나님의 언약적인 측면에서 볼때 이 말씀을 다시 한번 붙잡을수 있다.
3. 하나님의 메시지
1) 아브라함의 축복을 누림 - 창 Genesis 18:10, 12
수넴 여인의 축복은 아브라함의 가정이 누렸던 그 축복과 아주 깊은 관계가 있는것을 알수가 있다. 창 18 말씀을 보면 아브라함이 100세가 되고 아내 사라가 100세에 가까운 나이가 되었는데 어느날 천사가 나타나 네 아내에게 아들이 있을것이라 하거 이야기 한다. 그때에 아브라함은 그 말을 믿지 않았다고 나와있다. 창 18:12 사라도 그 이야기를 듣고 웃었다고 나와있다. 그런데 그 사람들에게 결국 자식이 생긴거다. 전혀 기대하지 못했던 자식이다. 심지어 수넴여인은 자신을 속이지 말라고 했다. 전혀 믿지 않았던거다. 그런데도 하나님께서 주신거다. 여기서 이 기적이 어떻게 해서 일어났느냐 이것부터 우리가 찾아보아야 한다. 아브라함이 그 소리를 듣게 된것은 찾아온 나그네에게 아주 대접을 잘 해주었던것을 알수가 있다. 하나님의 사랑을 계속 나타낸것이다. 피곤하니까 쉬다 가시라고 하면서 빵도 만들어주고 송아지를 잡아 고기를 만들어 대접까지 했다. 대접을 잘 받은 그 나그네가 너에게 자식이 있게 될것이다 말한거다. 수넴 여인도 마찬가지로 엘리사를 잘 대접 한거다, 그가 원하지도 않았는데 말이다. 그렇게 아들을 선물 받은거다.
2) 새 생명의 축복 - 고후 2 Corinthians 5:17
공통점은 여기서 끝나지 않는다. 아브라함 에게 주셨던 이삭 또한 죽음 가운데서 살아난 모습을 볼수가 있다. 이삭이 모리야 산에서 제물로 드려진거다. 번제물로 드린다는 의미는 죽음을 당하게 될것 이라는 말이다. 죽어서 피를 뿌려야 하는거다. 그런데 어떻게 살아나나. 희생양 때문에 살아나게 됐다. 희생양이 뭔가. 그걸 통해 아하, 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 돌아가시는구나 하는것을 알게 하시기 위해서 그런 사건이 있었다는거다. 이 수넴여인의 아들이 죽었다. 선지자 되는 엘리사는 그 아들의 죽음에 동참한다. 이 선지자가 그 아이의 죽음에 동참 하는거다. 그 죽음을 통해서 이 아이가 부활하게 된것이다. 아이가 부활한것은 무엇을 의미하나. 사망의 권세, 죽음의 권세가 무너졌다 라는것을 말한다. 이것은 무엇을 의미하나. 예수님 통해 하나님을 붙잡게 되면 사망의 권세가 완전히 무너질것이다 라는것을 의미한다. 바로 이것은 새 생명을 의미한다. 그리스도도 같은 방법으로 오셨다는 사실을 우리가 기억해야한다. 하나님의 아들은 원래 이 땅에 없던 분이다. 우리가 원하지도 않았는데 하나님께서 이 땅에 그의 아들을 보내신거다. 이삭도 그렇게왔고 수넴 여인의 아들도 마찬가지로 그렇게 온거다. 놀라운 공통점이다. 다시 말씀드리면 이삭이 살게 됨으로 말미암아 산 이삭이 아버지의 품속으로 들어오게 된거다. 수넴 여인의 아들이 죽음에서 부활 하게 하심으로 통해 새로운 생명을 수넴 여인의 품에 안기신것이다. 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 짊어지고 돌아가셨다. 주님께서 그를 다시 살리셨다. 이제 우리는 그 주님을 받아 들이기만 하면 되는거다. 영접만 하면 되는거다. 진심으로 내 마음속에 영접 하게 되면 그 아들의 생명이 우리 속에 들어오는것을 나타내고 있다. 우리 속에 들어옴으로써 영원히 우리와 함께 하시계시는것을 나타내고 있다. 그 능력의 영이 영원히 우리와 함께 하시는것이다. 하나님 자녀 된 우리는 연약하게 살 필요가 전혀 없다. 나는 비록 연약하고 부족하지만 나와 함께 하시는 이는 천지를 창조하신 하나님이다. 당당히 믿음을 가지고 나가면 모든 흑암은 무너지게 되어있다. 분명히 기억 하시기를 바란다. 하나님의 자녀가 가는곳은 하나님의 천군천사가 동원되고 항상 우리를 보호 하시고 지켜주시며 인도하신다. 옛날의 우리가 아니고 새로운 피조물이 되었기 때문이다. 부활하신 그 영이 내 안에 들어오셨기때문에 새 영이 된것이다. 고후 5:17 이다, “그런즉, 누구든지 그리스도 예수 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다.” 하나님 자녀된 자긍심을 가지고 사시기를 바란다. 이 믿음 가지고 살때 죽었다 살아나는 수넴여인의 역사가 여러분에게 나타나게 될줄을 믿는다.
결론 - 요 John 14:27
말씀 맺겠다. 요 14:27 말씀이다, “평안을 너희에게 끼치노니 곧 나의 평안을 두려워너희에게 주노라, 내가 너희에게 주는 것은 세상이 주는 것과 같지 아니하니라. 너희는 마음에 근심하지도 말고 두려워하지도 말라." 구원의 확신 있으신가? 주의 성령께서 내 안에 함께 하시는것을 믿으시는가? 그렇다면 하지도 말고 근심 하지도 마시라. 오직 하나님이 주시는 평안만을 누리시기를 바란다. 이 한주간에도 큰 응답 받는 여러분 되시기를 축원한다.
The Meaning of the Resurrection of the Shunammite Woman's Son (Hebrews 11:35)

“Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.”
Introduction
In America, there is a famous novelist named Pearl S. Buck and she wrote a novel called, “The Good Earth” that won a Nobel Prize for Literature. She visited Korea in the 1960s and when she visited there, she was on the way to Gwangju where she saw a strange event. She saw a farmer dragging an oxen cart with small straws of rice on top of it and thought this was very strange. So, she stopped her driver and asked the farmer why the farmer was dragging the oxen cart when he had an ox? The farmer responded, “How can I do that? I also worked hard but that cow also worked all day, so I need to share the burdens and load with the cow today.” Pearl said that she heard a response that she never expected and was so moved. When Pearl heard this response, she answered that she saw everything that she needed to see in Korea with this one farmer and saw the great hope of Korea. When she returned to America, she said that what she saw in Korea was the most beautiful thing that she had ever seen in the whole world. When we look at that, we may think that there is nothing special about this because we see it often. But, in the novelist’s view, it was very beautiful and charming. She saw the image of consideration and compassion in Koreans. The actions of love and consideration towards others, she saw that in Koreans. Last week, we spoke about the widow, Zarephath and how her son died but through Elijah’s prayers, her son was resurrected. In today's sermon, it speaks about a person being resurrected through Elisha’s prayer, a Shunammite woman’s son in today’s scripture.
1. The Faith of the Shunammite Woman
1) A woman who loved the Lord
This event was about the scripture in 2 Kings 4:8-10 “Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. 9 And she said to her husband, 'Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly. 10 Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.' ” - Elisha saw the great works of his teacher, Elijah on Mount Carmel and continued to visit Mount Carmel. A Shunammite woman saw Elisha on his journey to Mount Carmel and saw that he was a precious person of God and provided Elisha with food. She didn’t do this once but every time she saw Elisha, she asked him to come dine with her. She didn’t do this because she loved Elisha but because she loved God and loved God’s disciples and people. It didn’t end here but she told her husband that Elisha was a precious man of God and asked her husband to prepare a room, a bed, and desk for Elisha to rest in when he comes to visit Mount Carmel. Elisha was able to rest on his way to Mount Carmel because he had a place to rest, meditate, and pray in this woman’s house. Elisah was so moved by and grateful for the woman’s actions that he called the woman forward.
2) The Shunammite woman received her calling
2 Kings 4:13-16, 19 “And he said to him, 'Say now to her, ‘Look, you have been concerned for us with all this care. What can I do for you? Do you want me to speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ ' She answered, 'I dwell among my own people.' 14 So he said, 'What then is to be done for her?' And Gehazi answered, ''Actually, she has no son, and her husband is old.' 15 So he said, 'Call her.' When he had called her, she stood in the doorway. 16 Then he said, 'About this time next year you shall embrace a son.' And she said, 'No, my lord. Man of God, do not lie to your maidservant!' 19 And he said to his father, 'My head, my head!' So he said to a servant, 'Carry him to his mother.' ” - Elisha saw how the woman was being so considerate towards him and asked the woman to tell him whatever she wanted. The woman responded that she just wanted to live an ordinary life and didn’t want anything from Elisha. This was an earnest answer from the woman and when Elisha heard that, he was so moved but still wanted to help her so he asked her servant what the woman and her husband needed. He was so moved by the woman’s genuineness and hospitality, so he sincerely wanted to give and help the woman. The servant responded that the woman didn't have any children and her husband was old in age so they could not have children. When Elisha heard this, he was so happy and prayed to God to allow the woman to bear a child. God is the one who grants life so when Elisha prayed this prayer, Elisha called the woman forward. Elisha told the woman that at the same time next year, the woman will bear a son. When the woman heard this, the woman told Elisha to stop lying to her in 2 Kings 4:16. The woman didn’t believe in this at all but when that time came around, the woman ended up bearing a son. Since she had a son, she was so happy. This woman who had no hope of having children, she ended up having a son and she became so happy. She was so happy and living a happy life, but a problem arose. What ended up happening was that when the father was in the field working with their son, the son started yelling out that his head was hurting so they all ran towards the mother in 2 Kings 4:19. The woman was embracing her son, but the son ended up dying in her arms and she was so shocked. We may be in this situation. You may live a good Chrisitan walk of faith, but things get worse, and nothing is working out for you. How you respond in those situations is so important. But this Shunammite woman was different from other people.
2. God's Answer
1) The faith of the Shunammite woman
2 Kings 4:22-23, 28 “Then she called to her husband, and said, 'Please send me one of the young men and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and come back.' 23 So he said, 'Why are you going to him today? It is neither the New Moon nor the Sabbath.' And she said, 'It is well.' 28 So she said, 'Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me’?' ” - She didn’t yell out to her neighbors or people around her to help her, but she carried her dead son to Elisha's bedroom in her house and told her husband to send for some men and donkeys because she needed to run to Elisha. At this point, the husband didn’t know their son was dead and the husband was wondering why the woman was reacting in panic at this time. The woman didn’t tell her husband that their son was dead but she responded to her husband saying, “Everything is peaceful.” In other words, she told her husband that nothing is wrong in 2 Kings 4:23. When her son died, she said that she had to go meet the servant of God, Elisha. This was because the Shunammite woman had faith. The way that the Shunammite woman thought was, if it was God who granted her, her son then God will grant her answer and save her son. She knew that there was a special plan of God so she knew that she had to say to meet the servant of God so that she can find out God’s plan. That is why she hurriedly went with her servants and donkey to meet Elisha. Elisha ended up seeing the woman and her servant coming towards him and asked his servant to go out to the woman to figure out what was happening. When the servant of Elisha went to the woman, he asked if something happened to her or her husband? The woman didn’t respond that her son was dead but she said, everything is well. This shows how tremendous the woman’s faith was.
Elisha ended up coming to Mount Carmel with the woman in 2 Kings 4:27 "Now when she came to the man of God at the hill, she caught him by the feet, but Gehazi came near to push her away. But the man of God said, 'Let her alone; for her soul is in deep distress, and the Lord has hidden it from me, and has not told me.' "- She hugged the feet of the servant of God, Elisha and while she was doing this, the servant of Elisha tried to stop her. But when Elisha saw this, he knew that something was tormenting the woman and stopped the servant from stopping the woman.
After this happened, the woman finally told Elisha what happened in 2 Kings 4:28. She told Elisha that she never asked for a son but why did God kill her son if God was going to kill her son anyways? In other words, she was saying that God gave her a son for a reason, and it was God who granted this answer to her. The servant of God prayed for a son for her but why did God kill the son that the servant of God prayed for? This was what the woman was asking Elisha. The faith that the woman had, she had the absolute faith that God granted her a son so she knew that there was an absolute plan of God and had absolute faith God will save her son as well.
2) Elijah's concentrated prayer
2 Kings 4:29-30, 33-35 “29 Then he said to Gehazi, 'Get yourself ready, and take my staff in your hand, and be on your way. If you meet anyone, do not greet him; and if anyone greets you, do not answer him; but lay my staff on the face of the child.' 30 And the mother of the child said, 'As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.' So he arose and followed her. 33 He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. 34 And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. 35 He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.” - When Elisha heard this, he demanded his servant to take his staff and to place the staff on the son’s face but the woman didn’t stop there.
2 Kings 4:30 - She told Elisha since it was Elisha who prayed for this child for Elisha to come directly to her son and to pray for him. Elisha’s servant was praying for her son, but she was asking Elisha to go directly and pray for her son. When Elisha saw the woman’s faith, he went to her house. When Elisha arrived at her house, the servant had placed his staff on the son’s face, but nothing had happened, and he was still dead. Elisha saw the son who was on his bed and closed the door and asked no one to enter so it was just the child and him.
He started praying for the son and prayed the same prayer that Elijah, his teacher, prayed in 2 Kings 4:34. Last week we spoke about how touching a dead corpse meant you were covering yourself with sin. The fact that he was placing his body and hands over the dead corpse, this means that he was also placing himself in a place of death just like the dead corpse. The law in the Old Testament, it was written that it was considered a sin if you touch a dead corpse but none of that mattered to Elisha. Before God, Elisha was giving up his life to God when he was doing this. Through his sincere prayer, the son’s flesh started feeling warm, the Holy Spirit started working. Since the boy still didn’t resurrect back to life even after Elisha covered his body, Elisha started going around the room and started praying in concentration before God at this point. Then, he covered the son again and prayed.
2 Kings 4:35 - This is the power of prayer. Do you have a problem? Pray. Don’t just pray but pray in concentration. God is alive. God who is alive, He is listening to our prayers. Hold onto this. No matter what problem it is, it is not a problem at all. God is almighty, if God takes hold of your problem, then that problem will become solved immediately. If prayer has the power to revive a dead person, if a person of God prays, wouldn’t God answer your prayers? Truly be people who receive answers. This message, we must hold onto as God’s covenantal message.
3. God's Message
1) Enjoyment of Abraham's blessing
When we look at the blessing of the Shunammite woman, it was the same blessing that Abraham experienced.
Genesis 18:10, 12 “And He said, 'I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.' 12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, 'After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?' ” - Abraham reached the age of 100 and his wife was 99 years old, and at that time, the angel of God told them that they will have a child. When Abraham heard this, he didn’t believe in this at all and even Sarah who heard this, she laughed. She couldn’t believe what the angel told her because it didn’t make any sense for an old woman like her to bear a child. But she did end up bearing a child. It was a child that they didn't even expect at all. Even the Shunammite woman told Elisha not to deceive her and couldn’t believe in Elisha. But God granted her a child. We need to see the foundation of how these miracles worked.
If you look at the commonality of Abraham and the Shunammite woman, they both greeted the servants of God well. They both showed the love of God. Shunammite woman devoted and prepared food for Elisha on his journey to Mount Caramel. Since Abraham devoted and served the angels of God well, the angel of God told Abraham and Sarah that they will have a son. This was the same thing for Shunammite woman, she served Elisha well without anyone telling her to do so. The gift of a son was granted to her. This commonality didn’t end here for these two people. Isaac also experienced death but was resurrected back to life. He was given as a living sacrifice to God. This means that he was going to experience death and his blood was going to be given as a sacrifice to God. But how did he overcome that death? A ram was given as a sacrifice on his behalf. This ram was provided to show that Jesus Christ will come as the ultimate sacrifice for mankind.
The woman’s son died. Elisha who was a person of God, he also participated in the death of her son when he saw that her son died. They were participating in death. Through her son’s death… what does this mean? The death's power has been overcome and freed from. What does this mean? If you hold onto Jesus, then the power of death will be completely broken. This is talking about new life.
2) The blessing of new life
This was the same method on how Jesus Christ came to Earth. We didn’t ask for Jesus to come to Earth but God sent His son. This was the same way that Isaac and the woman's sons were born. This is an astounding commonality. In other words, just how Isaac lived, he entered the bosom of his father. Also just like the Shunammite's son experienced death, he experienced life again through a resurrection. When Jesus Christ died, He bore all our sins, but God raised Him up again. We just need to accept Christ and accept Him in our hearts. When we sincerely accept Christ in our hearts, then the life of Jesus will enter our lives. When the life of Christ comes inside of us, He will be with us forever. The power of the Spirit of God is in us forever. We who are children of God, there is no need for us to live so powerlessly. We may be lacking but God who is inside of us is the creator of the heavens and earth. If we go out with boldness and confidence, then the power of darkness has no choice but to break down. We must remember this. Wherever children of God go, the heavenly forces and heavenly background are with us. Why is that? Our old self is not part of us anymore. We are a new creation. Jesus Christ who has resurrected is inside of us, so we are now a new creation.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” - We must live with pride as children of God. When we live with this faith, then the same work of resurrection that the Shunammite woman experienced will be upon us as well.
Conclusion
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - Do you have assurance of salvation? Do you believe that the Spirit of God is inside of you? Then don’t fear nor be troubled. Experience and enjoy the peace that God has given to you.
