언약을 이루시는 하나님 (행25:13-22)
서론
중국에서 40년을 선교했던 헨리 포펜이라는 선교사님 간증을 들었다. 이것은 실화이다. 그 분이 중국에서 선교사로 40년을 선교했던 그 때에 체포되어 재판을 받게 되었다. 여러가지 제목 중에서 제일 무서운 죄가 국가 반역죄였다. 복음 전하는 선교사를 국가 반역죄로 감옥에 집어넣었다. 감옥에 들어간 선교사님은 너무나 힘들었다. 그를 집어넣은 감옥소 방이 너무나 조그매서 누울 수도 없었다. 다리를 펴고 잘 수도 없는 입장이고 쭈구려 앉아있는데 너무나 힘들었다. 너무나 힘들어서 저녁 때 하나님께 기도를 했다. 하나님 지금까지 하나님을 위해 살았습니다 이제 제 목숨을 거두어가주세요 하고 기도했다. 기도를 하고난 다음에 잠이 들었다. 그런데 갑자기 덜커덕 하면서 문여는 소리가 들렸다. 그러더니 한 사람이 나를 따라오라고 했다. 내가 누군지 묻지 말아달라고 하며 하나님께서 당신을 위해서 보낸 사람이라고 했다. 포핀 박사는 그 사람 말만 듣고 따라나섰다. 깜깜한 밤에 밤공기가 차가웠다. 자갈밭을 한참을 걸어가다보니 항구가 보였다. 앞서가던 사람이 “저기 배가 보이죠. 가서 빨리 타십시오. 저 배는 홍콩으로 가는 뱁니다. 홍콩에 도착하시게 되면 자유롭게 당신 나라로 갈 수 있습니다.” 했다. 포펜 박사는 그 순간까지 꿈을 꾸는 줄 알았다. 시키는 그대로 배에 올라탔다. 배가 출발했다. 중국 땅이 멀어지는 그 모습을 보면서 정말로 중국을 떠나는구나 하는 마음이 들었다. 그 때 생각이 하나님게서 천사를 보내셔서 나를 구출하셨구나 하는 마음이 들었다. 그래서 그는 엎드려서 하나님께 깊이 감사기도를 했다. 이 분은 이 간증을 많이 하고 다녔다. 분명한 것은 우리가 눈에 보지 못하는 영적세계는 존재한다. 분명히 하나님은 살아계시다. 예수님도 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가셨다가 부활하셔서 지금 살아계시다. 천사들도 있다. 물론 사단도 있다. 이 선교사님 하나님 앞에 간절히 기도한 기도 내용을 하나님께서 듣고 계셨다. 그 상황을 다 알고계셨다는 사실이다. 그것을 들으시고 상황을 아시는 하나님께서 천사를 보내셔서 구출하셨다.
1. 헤롯 아그립바왕의 가문
1) 아그립바 1세
오늘 우리가 본문에 아그립바 왕이 나타난다. 아그립바 왕 가문에도 하나님의 사자가 나타났던 것이 성경에도 나타나있다. 이 사람은 아그립바 2세인데 이 사람의 아버지되는 아그립바 1세가 하나님이 보낸 천사를 만난 사람이다. 그런데 이 선교사님은 천사가 나타나서 선교사를 구원해주는 일을 했는데 아그립바 1세는 그 반대이다. 행 12장 보게되면 아그립바 1세는 교회를 핍박했던 사람이다. 사도 요한의 형 되는 야고보 사도를 죽였던 사람이다. 그리고 베드로 사도를 감옥에 투옥시켰던 사람이다. 이 사람이 이것으로 끝나지 않았었다.
행 12:23 헤롯이 영광을 하나님께로 돌리지 아니하므로 주의 사자가 곧 치니 벌레에게 먹혀 죽으니라
역사가의 기록에 의하면 이 아그립바 왕은 축제를 벌였다. 그 축제가 황제를 위한 특별한 축제였다. 많은 귀족들과 백성들이 원형 극장에 모였다. 축제 두번째날에 아그립바 왕이 순은으로 만은 멋진 왕복을 입고 군중앞에 나타난다. 은으로 된 왕복을 입으니까 햇빛이 비출 때 신비한 빛이 반짝 거렸다. 많은 사람들이 감탄했다. 그 사람들 중에 아첨꾼들이 왕에게 이야기를 했다. 요세푸스라는 역사가가 기록한 내용이 나타난다. “우리에게 호의를 베풀어주셔서 지금까지는 한 인간으로 당신을 존경해 왔으나 지금부터는 그 이상의 존재로 존경하겠습니다.” 인간이 아니라 하나님과같은 존재로 존경하겠다는 이야기 아니겠는가. 아그립바 1세는 성경에 헤롯왕으로 나타나는데 헤롯왕은 이스라엘의 왕이다. 이스라엘은 하나님을 존경하고 영광돌리는 백성의 왕이다. 하나님의 백성이라면 모든 영광을 하나님께 돌리기 원하는 백성들이다. 그 왕이라면 “마땅히 무슨 얘기를 하느냐. 하나님께 영광을 돌려야지.” 하면서 막아야했다. 그런데 왕은 그 소리가 너무나 좋아서 가만히 끄덕끄덕하고 있었다. 선교사의 기도를 듣고 그 모습을 봤던 하나님이 역시 아그립바 왕의 모습을 다 보고계신다. 자기를 막 추켜세우는 것을 보고 기분이 좋아서 고개를 치켜세웠다. 딱 들어보니까 위에 줄이 있는데 줄에 올빼미가 앉아있었다. 그런데 올뺴미를 보자마자 불길한 예감이 들었다고 한다. 그 순간에 마음에 칼로 찌르는 것 같은 고통을 느끼기 시작했다. 그 순간에 왕은 갑자기 고통을 느끼면서 그냥 넘어졌다. 많은 사람들이 놀라서 쳐다보았다. 들어누운 상태에서 많은 사람들이 그 모습을 보면서 눈물을 흘리면서 자신을 깨닫게 되는 것이다. 5일동안 극심한 복통을 앓다가 54세라는 나이로 죽게된다. 왕이 된지 7년이 되는 해에 죽게된다. 하나님께 저주를 받은 것이다. 이 사람에게는 하나님이 없었던 것이다. 하나님이 분명히 살아계시는데 자신이 영광을 받으려다가 순간적으로 그 앞에서 쓰러진 것이다. 오늘 본문에 나오는 아그립바는 그 아들이다.
2) 아그립바 2세
이 아들은 사실 저주받은 아버지의 아들이다. 자기가 하나님처럼 행동하다가 저주를 받은 자의 아들이다. 그렇다면 성경에서는 마땅히 3-4대까지 저주를 받아야한다고 나와있다. 그런데 성경을 보게되면 이 저주받은 사람의 아들을 사도바울을 만나게해주는 것을 볼 수 있다. 물론 베스도 때문에 만나게되지만 하나님이 허락하셔야지만 만나는 것이다. 확실한 언약을 가진 사도바울을 만나게 해주셨다. 저는 이것을 보면서 하나님의 사랑은 극진하시다는 것을 깨달았다. 이 가문이 저주받은 가문인데 하나님께서 다시 회복할 수 있는 기회를 주시는 것이다. 사도바울은 만나서 정확한 복음을 통해서 가문이 치유받는 기회를 가져라 하신 것이다.
딤전2:4 하나님은 모든 사람이 구원을 받으며 진리를 아는 데에 이르기를 원하시느니라
나중에 또 보겠습니다만 사도바울은 아그립바왕과 베스도 앞에서 정확한 복음을 증거한다. 참 하나님의 크신 사랑을 다시 발견할 수 있다. 하나님은 누구든지 멸망하는 것을 원하시지 않는다. 누구든지 복음을 들었으면 하신다. 아그립바 2세는 중요한 왕이다. 성경 역사상, 세계 역사상, 유대인 역사상 마지막 왕으로 기록된 사람이다. 로마의 디도 장군에 의해서 이스라엘이 점령당하는데 그 때 있었던 왕이 이 아그립바 왕이다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘이 멸망받기 이 전에 사도바울을 보내서 다시 한 번 기회를 마련하는 것이다. 자기 아버지가 저주받은 것은 상관이 없는 것이다. 왜 그런가. 복음만 잡으면 되니까. 아그립바 왕이 복음만 잡게되면 이스라엘 백성이 다 축복받을 수 있으니까 그 기회를 주시는 것이다. 복음만 잡으면 된다. 그래서 언약은 복음에서 모든 것이 시작된다.
2. 언약의 사람
1) 복음을 가진자
롬1:16 내가 복음을 부끄러워하지 아니하노니 이 복음은 모든 믿는 자에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력이 됨이라 먼저는 유대인에게요 그리고 헬라인에게로다
모든 믿는 자라고 헀다. 그 조상이 아무리 저주 받아도 괜찮다. 우상을 아무리 섬겼어도 괜찮다. 이 사람이 복음을 받게되면 살아난다. 무엇을 통해선가. 복음을 통해서이다. 모든 믿는 자들에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력이 있다. 바로 이것이 복음의 능력이다. 왜 그런가.
창3:15 내가 복음을 부끄러워하지 아니하노니 이 복음은 모든 믿는 자에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력이 됨이라 먼저는 유대인에게요 그리고 헬라인에게로다
예수님께서 오셔서 십자가에 돌아가심으로서 사단의 머리를 완전히 박살내셨다. 그 사실을 믿으면 된다. 뿐만 아니다. 창세기 22장 13절 말씀을 보게되면 아브라함이 이삭을 제물로 하나님께 바치는 내용이 나타난다. 하나님께서 자기 아들 이삭을 아브라함을 통해서 바치라고 명령하신 것이다. 아브라함이 자기 아들을 데리고가서 단에 올리고 바치려고 칼을 들었다. 그 때 하나님께서 아브라함이 손대지 말라 하고 말씀하셨다. 그러면서 앞을 보니까 수풀에 양이 걸려있었다.
창 22:13 아브라함이 눈을 들어 살펴본즉 한 숫양이 뒤에 있는데 뿔이 수풀에 걸려 있는지라 아브라함이 가서 그 숫양을 가져다가 아들을 대신하여 번제로 드렸더라
이삭은 양 때문에 살아난 것이다. 이삭이 왜 죽어야만 했나. 아무 죄도 없는 사람인데 죽이라고 했다. 자기는 아무 죄를 안지었는지 몰라도 원죄가 있기 때문이 이 죄가 해결되지 않으면 누구든지 죽는다. 그런데 그 죄를 해결하실 수 있는 분이 예수 그리스도였다. 예수 그리스도께서 죽으심으로 우리의 모든 죄를 담당하셨다. 우리 모든 죄를 완전히 해결하셨다. 그 분만 모시게되면 어떤 죄도 용서받는다. 원죄 자범죄 조상죄까지도 완전히 해결받는다. 아그립바 왕에게 이 기회를 허락하신 것이다.
히 10:19 그러므로 형제들아 우리가 예수의 피를 힘입어 성소에 들어갈 담력을 얻었나니
예수님께서 우리를 위해서 대신 돌아가심을 통해서 하나님을 만날 수 있는 기회가 생겼다. 하나님 만날 수 있는 참 선지자 되신 그리스도를 나타낸다. 누구든지 이 사실만 알면 구원을 얻는다. 이것이 얼마나 귀중한지 모른다. 우리가 이 사실을 정말로 알고 나의 것으로 누리게되면 어마어마한 축복이 우리에게 임한다. 천국에 가는 것 뿐 아니다. 이 땅에서도 하나님 자녀된 축복을 누리면서 살 수 있다.
2) 언약을 누리는 자
창 13:9에 아브라함과 롯 사건이 기록되어있다. 가나안 땅에 온 아브라함이 조카 롯하고 재산 싸움이 벌어졌다. 재산 싸움이 벌어졌다는 것은 언약을 놓치는 그 순간에 재산으로 싸움질을 할 수 밖에 없는 것이다. 아브라함이 드디어 깨닫는다. 이건 아니다. 그래서 아브라함이 조카 롯을 불러서 말한다.
창 13:9 네 앞에 온 땅이 있지 아니하냐 나를 떠나가라 네가 좌하면 나는 우하고 네가 우하면 나는 좌하리라
이렇게 얘기했다는 것은 아브라함이 물질이 중요하지 않고 하나님의 언약이 중요하다는 것을 다시 잡았다는 것이다. 이 때 롯은 아주 아름답고 좋은 소돔과 고모라 땅을 택한다. 아브라함이 모든 것을 다 놓고 산으로 들어간다. 모든 것을 다 놔버린 것이다. 그런데 이게 왠일인가. 하나님께서는 아브라함을 불러서 축복해주신다. 네가 좌우로 다 쳐다보라는 것이다. 네가 보는 모든 땅을 너에게 주겠다고 하셨다. 그리고 가병 318명 이라는 어마어마한 축복을 주셨다. 언약 때문에 모든 것을 놓친것 같은데 사실 놓고나니까 하나님께서 어마어마한 축복을 예비해놓으셨다. 이것이 이면계약의 축복이다. 또 이삭에게 나타난 축복이 있다. 이삭이 아버지가 돌아가시고 사는데 흉년이 들어서 먹을 것이 없어진다. 그래서 애굽에 나일강도 있고 풍부하니까 애굽으로 내려가려고 한다. 그 때 하나님께서 말씀하신다.
창26:2 여호와께서 이삭에게 나타나 이르시되 애굽으로 내려가지 말고 내가 네게 지시하는 땅에 거주하라
가뭄 때문에 먹고 살 것이 없어서 가려는 것이다. 그대로 있으면 굶어죽는다. 그런데 하나님께서는 가지 말고 있으라는 것이다. 그 때 이삭은 자기 육신을 쫓지 않고 하나님 말씀을 따르게된다. 이 상황이 간단한게 아니다. 먹을게 없는 상황이다. 그 때 불평하지 않고 알겠습니다 하고 굶어죽으면 죽으리라 하는 마음으로 기다렸던 것이다. 하나님께서는 어떤 축복을 주셨는가.
창 26:12 이삭이 그 땅에서 농사하여 그 해에 백 배나 얻었고 여호와께서 복을 주시므로
그냥 한 해 농사가 아니라 백 배의 농사를 지었다. 이삭은 생전 농사를 지어본 적도 없다. 양만 치던 사람이 농사를 졌는데 백 배의 결과를 맺었다. 언약이 이 처럼 중요하다. 언약 붙잡은 자에게 주시는 축복이 어마어마하다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 살아계시기 때문이다. 하나님 말씀을 틀림없기 때문이다.
요삼1:2 사랑하는 자여 네 영혼이 잘됨 같이 네가 범사에 잘되고 강건하기를 내가 간구하노라
우리가 하나님 앞에 바로서게 되면 하나님께서는 내 모든 것을 책임져주신다.
3. 교회의 축복
1) 예배의 축복
하나님께서는 언약의 백성들이 모인 교회를 축복하시게 되어있다. 이 축복 가운데 가장 큰 축복이 예배의 축복이다.
고전3:16 너희는 너희가 하나님의 성전인 것과 하나님의 성령이 너희 안에 계시는 것을 알지 못하느냐
하나님이 계신 곳이 교회이다. 우리 안에 주님께서 오셨다는 것은 내가 하나님께 예배를 드리는 존재라는 것이다. 이 세상에서 내가 받은 가장 큰 축복이 하나님께 예배를 드릴 수 있는 자격이 생겼다는 것이다. 하나님의 자녀가 아니면 이 축복을 누릴 수 없다. 그러므로 우리가 하나님 자녀된 축복을 누리는 것이 가장 중요하다.
마18:20 두세 사람이 내 이름으로 모인 곳에는 나도 그들 중에 있느니라
내가 하나님께 예배를 드릴 수 있는 존재가 됬는데 두 사람만 모이게 되면 하나님께서 함께 있다고 얘기하고 있다. 하나님의 자녀들이 예배드리는 장소에는 항상 하나님께서 함께하시다. 그러니까 예배는 축복을 받을 수 받게 없는 장소와 시간이다.
행1:14 여자들과 예수의 어머니 마리아와 예수의 아우들과 더불어 마음을 같이하여 오로지 기도에 힘쓰더라
120명이 모여서 함께 기도했다. 그 때 행 2:1-4 성령충만한 역사가 일어났다. 교회에서 함께 기도하게 되면 성령의 놀라운 능력의 역사가 나타난다는 것이다. 우리가 교회에 와서 찬양하고 예배를 드리는 순간에 성령의 놀라우신 능력의 역사가 일어나는 순간이다. 예배를 통해서 힘을 얻게되는 것이다. 세상이 주는 힘과는 전혀 다른 영적인 힘을 얻게된다. 또 예배는 무엇인가.
빌3:20 그러나 우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있는지라 거기로부터 구원하는 자 곧 주 예수 그리스도를 기다리노니
교회를 통해서 천국을 이 땅에서 누리는 것이다. 하늘 배경을 누리는 것이다. 이 순간에 수많은 천군천사가 함께 예배를 드리고 있다. 이 예배를 정말로 누리시기 바란다. 그 모든 것을 생각하고 예배를 드리게되면 어마어마한 축복이 임하게 되어있다. 이 모든 배경을 갖고 예배를 드린다면 하나님께서는 절대 응답 5가지를 주신다.
2) 교회에 주시는 절대 응답
지금 이 시간에 나타나는 응답이다. 오직 복음(롬1:17)의 응답이 나타난다.
롬 1:17 복음에는 하나님의 의가 나타나서 믿음으로 믿음에 이르게 하나니 기록된 바 오직 의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라 함과 같으니라
예배를 통해서 복음을 듣는 순간에 믿음으로 믿음에 이르는 역사가 일어난다. 예배를 통해서 자꾸만 믿음이 자라는 것이다. 이 믿음으로 살아야되는구나 하는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 이것이 예배를 통해 나타난다. 두번째는 오직 기도(마18:18) 이다.
마 18:18 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 무엇이든지 너희가 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이요 무엇이든지 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀리리라
오늘 집사님이 대표기도를 하셨다. 또 같이 기도했다. 오늘 말씀에 교회에서 하는 기도내용을 말하고 있는 것이다. 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 무엇이든지 너희가 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매인다고 했다. 이 메는게 무엇인가. 이 땅에서 우리가 결박기도를 한다. 흑암이 떠나가게 하옵소서. 결박받고 떠나가게 하옵소서. 기도하는 그 순간에 하늘에서 역사가 일어난다. 무엇이든지 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서 풀릴 것이라. 하나님께서는 풀어주신다. 흑암의 권세에서 해방시켜주신다. 모든 가문의 저주에서 해방시켜 주신다. 모든 갈등에서 해방시켜주신다. 이 축복이 예배를 통해서 나타난다. 세번째가 오직 말씀(요6:63) 이다.
요 6:63 살리는 것은 영이니 육은 무익하니라 내가 너희에게 이른 말은 영이요 생명이라
오늘 예배를 통해서 말씀이 선포되고 있다. 이 말씀은 무슨 역할을 하는가. 살리고 있다. 뭘 살리는가. 영을 살린다. 그러므로 너희에게 이르는 말이 영이요 생명이라고 하셨다. 말씀을 들을때 함다 영이 힘을 얻게된다. 우리가 힘이 없다가도 말씀을 듣는 순간에 힘이 올라온다. 예배를 통해서 또 오직 전도의 축복이 나타난다.
행1:8 오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라
성령이 임하게되면 권능을 받는다. 우리가 예배를 통해서 권능을 받게된다. 우리가 우리 자신이 살 뿐 아니라 다른 사람을 살릴 수 있게된다. 고통받는 자를 해방시켜줄 수 있다. 많은 사람들이 우울증 조울증 공황증으로 고통받고있다. 그들에게 살 수 있는 길을 가르쳐준다. 그 증인으로 삼으시겠다는 것이다. 마지막으로 오직 교회(엡1:23)이다.
엡 1:23 교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만하게 하시는 이의 충만함이니라
이 교회가 무엇인가. 그의 몸이다. 예수님의 몸이다. 그렇기 때문에 교회가 중요하다. 우리의 모든 헌신은 우리를 위해 하는 것이 아니라 주님을 위해서 하는 것이다. 왜냐하면 이 교회를 통해 최고의 충만함이 있기 때문이다. 모든 만물을 충만하게 하시는 역사가 교회에 나타난다. 교회를 위해서 헌신 봉사 수고하시는 사람 치고 축복 안해주시는 사람이 없다. 왜 그런가. 주님 자신의 몸을 섬기고 있기 때문에 축복해주시는 것이다. 우리가 애쓰고 힘쓰는거 같지만 주님이 보시기에는 기뻐하시는 것이다. 그래서 류목사님이 우리의 제 1순위는 교회라고 얘기하신다. 오늘 우리가 같이 청소를 하게된다. 주님께서 하나하나 다 보고 계신다. 그 손길, 마음 먹는 것 까지 다 보고 계신다. 예배 안에서 축복을 마음껏 베풀어주실 줄로 믿는다.
결론
빌 4:6 아무 것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라
근심 걱정 있으신가. 전혀 하지 말라고 하신다. 감사함으로 하나님께 기도하라고 했다. 왜냐하면 우리에게 주시는 응답은 어마어마하기 때문이다. 왜그런가.
빌 4:7 그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라
믿음으로 받는 그 순간에 하나님의 평강을 부어주실 줄로 믿는다. 여러분들이 평강을 느끼는 순간에 모든 것이 끝나는 것이다. 응답받는 여러분 되시기 바란다.
God Who Fulfills the Covenant (Acts 25:13-22)

Scripture: “ 13 And after some days King Agrippa and Bernice came to Caesarea to greet Festus. 14 When they had been there many days, Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying: 'There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix, 15 about whom the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, when I was in Jerusalem, asking for a judgment against him. 16 To them I answered, ‘It is not the custom of the Romans to deliver any man to destruction before the accused meets the accusers face to face, and has opportunity to answer for himself concerning the charge against him.’ 17 Therefore when they had come together, without any delay, the next day I sat on the judgment seat and commanded the man to be brought in. 18 When the accusers stood up, they brought no accusation against him of such things as I supposed, 19 but had some questions against him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, who had died, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. 20 And because I was uncertain of such questions, I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalem and there be judged concerning these matters. 21 But when Paul appealed to be reserved for the decision of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I could send him to Caesar.' 22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, 'I also would like to hear the man myself.' 'Tomorrow,' he said, 'you shall hear him.' ”
<Introduction>
I listened to a testimony of a missionary in China named Henry Pope and he was a missionary in China for 40 years. While he was doing mission work in China, he got caught and faced trial. What was really scary about this was that they accused this missionary of treason against China. Since he was accused of treason, he was put in prison and while he was in prison, he was having a hard time. The prison cell that he was put into, it was very small and very uncomfortable to the point where he couldn’t even stretch out his legs and body. Since he was having a hard time, he prayed to God in prison, “I lived a life a good life for you, God, please take my life.” After he prayed that prayer, he fell asleep but during his sleep, he woke up to hear his prison cell door opening and someone told him to follow him. And, this person said not to question who this person was but to just follow him because he was sent by God. So, this missionary followed him outside through the field, and after a while, the missionary came to a port and was told to ride a boat to Hong Kong. He was told that if he rode that boat, he can go to Hong Kong then go back to his country. While all of this was happening, the missionary was wondering if he was dreaming the whole time but he followed the directions. While the boat was traveling farther into the water and away from the land of China, he realized that he wasn’t dreaming and was escaping from China. At that moment, the missionary realized that God sent him an angel to free him and he gave thanksgiving to God. This was a testimony that this missionary shared. What is absolute is that the spiritual world is at work and exists around us. What is absolute is that God is alive. What is absolute is that Jesus Christ died on the cross, resurrected, and is alive now. What is absolute is that angels and Satan exist. What was also absolute was that God listened the content of the prayer of the missionary and God knew everything that was happening within this missionary’s life. Because He knew what was happening in this missionary’s life, God sent an angel to save him.
1. The Family Line of King Agrippa
1) Agrippa I:
It is written in today’s scripture, which speaks about King Agrippa and an angel appeared before this king’s family line. An angel appeared before king Agrippa’s father but, just like we discussed in the introduction, the missionary was saved by an angel but for king Agrippa, it was the opposite. This reason is told in Acts 12:1-3, 23 (“Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. 2 Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also. Now it was during the Days of Unleavened Bread. 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died. ”) - King Agrippa’s father, King Agrippa I persecuted the church, sent Peter to prison, and killed James as well. In history, it was written that King Agrippa I held a festival for Caesar and so many people and citizens of Rome gathered for that festival. The second day of the festival, king Agrippa I appeared before the people wearing a shiny, silver robe. Since he was wearing this shiny, silver robe, it was shining very brightly that he looked like “god”, and so many people were awed by this and started seeing him as a “god”. A historian came before King Agrippa I and told him, “I have respected you as a human being but now I will respect you as more than a human being.” This means that people started seeing him as a god. King Agrippa I was also mentioned as Herod, which means that he was the king of Israel at that time which meant that he was the king of the chosen people of God, the Israelites. He should’ve led his people to worship and give glory to God but instead what did this king do? This king grew jealous of God and told the people to give worship to him and not to God. He should’ve told the people of God, the Israelites, to worship God and return their glory to God but instead, he grew greed for fame from the people who saw him as a “god”. Just like we discussed in the introduction that God sees everything, God saw everything that was happening to King Agrippa I’s heart who grew proud in his own fame. When he was feeling proud of himself, he looked up and saw an owl but the moment he saw that owl, he felt this ominous feeling and great pain seized him. And, right then and there, he fell down in pain and many people grew alarmed by this. He fell sick in bed and passed away at the age of 54. He was only a king for 10 years and died. This also meant that he was cursed by God. There was no God for king Agrippa I because he wanted to be worshipped by people as a “god”. But in today’s scripture, it talks about king Agrippa but this King Agrippa II was the son of King Agrippa I.
2) Agrippa II:
Verse 13 - King Agrippa II saw how his father died and what happened to his father. He was the son of the father who didn’t acknowledge God and made himself like a “god”. the Bible tells us if you are cursed by God, the curse will go down to the third and fourth generations and I think this is true and rightful. If you look in the Bible, King Agrippa I was cursed by God but God allowed his son, King Agrippa II to meet Apostle Paul. God allowed King Agrippa II to meet an evangelist, Paul who had the accurate gospel. When I read this, I realized how much love and grace God has for this world and the people. This means that God was trying to restore the family line of King Agrippa and was giving them another chance. The fact that King Agrippa II met Paul meant that God was giving him a chance to receive the gospel and save his family line.
1 Timothy 2:4 (“Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”) - We will see later but Paul was able to stand before King Agrippa II and Festus, and proclaimed the true, accurate gospel to them. Through this, we can see once gain the great love of God. God does not want anyone to suffer and wants all people to receive salvation. King Agrippa II, especially was an important king during that time. He was recorded as the last king of Israel. He was the last king of Israel because Rome ended up destroying Israel. Before Israel was destroyed by Rome, God was giving King Agrippa II the last chance to restore the land of Israel and the gospel. Even though his father, King Agrippa I lost hold of the gospel, God was giving him the chance to restore the gospel. This is because God knows that the gospel is everything. All you have to do is receive the gospel. We can see that God’s covenant starts from the gospel.
2. People of the Covenant
1) Those who have the gospel:
Romans 1:16 (“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”) - It says for everyone. It doesn’t matter how much you suffered, what kind of sins you have committed, or how much you worshipped idols in the past but if you just receive the gospel then you will be saved. Those who believe, they will receive the power of God to salvation. Why is that? It is because of the covenant of Genesis 3:15 (“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”) - When Jesus Christ came and died on the cross, He broke the power of Satan completely. You must believe in this.
Genesis 22:13 (“Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.”) - This scripture talks about how Abraham had to sacrifice his son, Isaac. God commanded for Abraham to sacrifice his one and only son, Isaac to Him. Then, Abraham rose the knife and was about to kill Isaac but at that moment, God stopped Abraham and provided him a sacrifice on Isaac’s behalf. So, Abraham took the sacrifice that was caught in the thicket and sacrificed it on Isaac’s behalf. Isaac was saved because of that sacrifice prepared by God. Why did Isaac had to die even though he had no sin? Even though Isaac may not have done anything wrong, he still had original sin. If you cannot solve your original sin, you have to die to solve that sin. The only way to solve that sin is only through Christ alone. Only Christ was able to bear the sin of original sin once and for all through His work on the cross. Only when you take Christ as your master and savior, then your sins of original sin and ancestral sins are forgiven once and for all. This was the chance that God was giving King Agrippa II.
Hebrews 10:19 (“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus.”) - When Jesus Christ died on the cross for us, He opened the way for us to meet and be with God once again. As Christ as the True Prophet showed us the way back to meet God. This was why it says that it is the power of God to salvation. When we realize this, then great blessings will come upon us.
2) Those who enjoy the covenant:
Not only will we go to heaven when we pass away but we can enjoy blessings on this earth. One example is written in Genesis 13:9 (“Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.”) - Abraham and his nephew, Lot had to fight for land territory and inheritance. This meant that they lost hold of the covenant. If you don’t have God, then you fight over unnecessary things. But Abraham finally realizes his wrongdoing and calls his nephew forward, and spoke of Genesis 13:9. The fact that he said this, this meant that he realized the importance of God’s covenant. At this time, Lot looks at the abundant land of Sodom and Gomorrah and chooses that land. But Abraham choice the least abundant land, the mountains and went there. But what happened? God called Abraham and blessed him. God told Abraham that God will give all of the land before him and poured down tremendous blessings to Abraham. It may seem like he was losing everything but God prepared tremendous blessings for him. This is the blessing of the dual mandate covenantal contract.
Genesis 26:2, 12 (“Then the Lord appeared to him and said: 'Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.' 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.”) - This is the blessing that was poured upon Isaac. Before that, a famine arose and there was nothing to eat, and he realized that he should go down to Egypt to live there. But God came before Isaac and commanded him not to go to Egypt but to go the land that God prepared for him. Isaac needed food during this time of famine and he needed to go to Egypt for food but God commanded him not to go there. But during this time, Isaac did not choose his own gain and selfish motives but followed after God’s Word and command. Even though he could starve since there was no food, he did not complain before God but waited for God to move and work. But what kind of blessings came to Isaac? Genesis 26:12 - It said that God blessed him a hundredfold. Isaac started farming but this farming was growing hundredfold. He never farmed before in his life and only had experienced as a shepherd but God blessed him hundredfold. This shows how important the covenant is. The blessings and answer that you receive when you hold onto God’s covenant is tremendous. This is because God is absolute and His covenant is absolute. This is because God is absolutely alive and His Word is absolute. That is why it is written in 3 John 1:2 (“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”) - When we stand upright before God and entrust all things to Him, then He will take full responsibility over your life. Then, what must you hold onto?
3. The Blessing of the Church
1) The blessing of the worship:
God wants to bless His people of His covenant and the greatest blessing is restoring worship.
1 Corinthians 3:16 (“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”) - The place where God is, is the church. God’s presence is within the church, where He dwells. The greatest place of blessing is giving worship to God. If you are not a child of God, then you cannot enjoy the blessings God has prepared. So enjoying the blessings that God has prepared for His children is the greatest blessing.
Matthew 18:20 (“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”) - We are able to come before God as worshippers and when come together to worship God, then God promised that He is with us at that time. This means that God is always with us and His presence is with us when we gather as a church. That is why the place of worship is the most blessed place.
Acts 1:14 (“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.”) - This verse talks about the gathering of the Early Church at Mark’s Upper Room. The result of their gathering, the power of the Holy Spirit was at work. In other words, when a church comes together and prays, then the power of Holy Spirit is at work and is manifested. When we come to church, give praise to God and pray, then the power of Holy Spirit is at work. That is why when we give worship to God, we have no choice but to receive spiritual strength. We are able to gain spiritual strength that is nothing compared to the strength and power of this world. This power is different from the power of this world.
Philippians 3:20 (“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”) - It is enjoying heaven on earth. We are enjoying the background of heaven. When we give worship, the heavenly armies are mobilized and is present. May you truly enjoy this. When we realize this when we give worship to God, then great blessings will come upon you. When we give worship with this background, then God will give you five absolute answers.
2) Absolute answers given to the church:
These are the answers that come upon when we give worship to God.
Only the gospel (Romans 1:17) (“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”) - You realize only the gospel. Think about this. Through worship, as we hear the gospel, we are able to grow in faith. When you keep giving worship to God, then your faith grows. Then you realize that you must live by faith. This is the answer that comes to us.
Only prayer (Matthew 18:18) (“Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”) - We listened to the prayer of Deacon Ha and he prayed with the content of the church’s prayer topics. In this scripture, it said that whatever we bind on earth will be bound in heaven. What is bound? On this earth, we do the bounding prayer against the forces of darkness. We pray for the forces of darkness to depart. The moment we pray this prayer, works arise in heaven. Whatever is loose on earth will be loosed in heaven - We are praying for God to solve our problems on earth. Then, God will loosen us of our problems. He will break down the forces of darkness. He will break us free from the problems of our family line. He will break us free from all conflicts and tribulations. This blessing will be manifested upon your life.
Only the Word (John 6:63) (“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”) - There is something that is proclaimed when we give worship. What happens when the Word of God is proclaimed? Life is given to us. It is reviving our soul. It says that the Word of God is life and gives life. That is why when we receive God’s Word, then we receive strength and our soul prospers. We may feel lacking but the moment we listen to God’s Word, we become revived and power comes upon us.
Only evangelism (Acts 1:8) (“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”) - When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, power is upon us. When we give worship, we receive power. Not only do you receive strength but you receive the strength to revive and save others around you. There are so many people around us who are suffering from so many problems and mental afflictions. We are providing with the answer and the way to save them. We are standing as a witness of this.
Only the church (Ephesians 1:23) (“Which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”) - What is the church? It says that the church is the body of Jesus. The church is the body of Jesus Christ. If that is so, the church is very important. The devotions that we do for the church, we are devoting for God. This is because all of the greatest blessings that are within the church. Through the church, His fullness is present. Give me an example or a time when someone wasn’t blessed after they devoted their lives for the church. Why is that? Because imagine how happy God must be when you devote and serve for the sake of His body. You may be working really hard for the church but when God sees your devotion and servitude, He can see that you think of His body as really precious. That is why Rev. Kwang-su Ryu said that the church is God’s top priority. Today we will have the cleaning day for the church and God will see your devotions today, and He will see your heart today. May God’s great blessings be upon you.
<Conclusion>
Hold onto Philippians 4:6-7 (“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”) - Do you have any worries or problems? God commands us not to worry but to pray with thanksgiving. Because the answers that God has prepared for us is tremendous. This is because the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. When you believe in this, God’s peace will come upon you. When you find peace in Christ, then it is all finished. When you feel peace in problems, then that problem is finished. May you receive answers.
