“부활을 확인한 사르밧 과부"

“여자들은 자기의 죽은자들을 부활로 받아들이기도 하며 또어떤이들은 더 좋은 부활을 얻고자 하여 심한 고문을 받되 구차히 풀려나기를 원하지 아니하였으며.” (히브리서 11:35)
서론
지난주에 뉴스를 봤다. 미국 캔사스주를 비롯해 그 주변에 엄청난 토네이도 때문에 수많은 피해를 입었다는 뉴스였다. 어떤 사람은 토네이도에 쓸려가 100M 넘게 떨어진 곳에 추락해 죽었다고 한다. AP 통신 기사에 의하면 과학자들은 인간으로 인해 일어난 기후 변화로 앞으로 지구 온난화 문제가 더욱 더 심해져 많은 어려움을 겪을것이다 라고 했다. 저는 우리가 살아있다는 자체가 기적같다 느껴진다. 이것을 보면서 하나님께서 우리 생명을 지켜주시지 않으시면 언제든지 우리가 어려움을 당할수밖에 없구나 하는것을 느꼈다. 지금 세계 곳곳에서는 지진과 기근, 질병, 전쟁, 전염병, 많은것으로 사람들이 고통 받고있다. 이것을 영적으로 본다면 하나님께서 분명 이런 사건을 통해서 우리에게 귀중한 메시지를 주시고 계신다 알수있다. 그래서 일어났던 1년의 사건들을 통해 하나님의 음성을 듣는것이 참 중요하다. 일어나는 이 모든 사건들에는 분명 그 원인이 있고 하나님의 안타까운 메시지가 들어 있다는 것을 알아야한다. 우리가 세상을 보면 너무나도 쉽게 죽는 사람들이 많다. 그런데 어떤 분을 보면 하나님이 지켜주셔서 어떤 위험한 상황 속에서도 결코 죽지아니하고 반드시 승리 하고있는 모습을 볼수가 있다. 중요한것은 우리가 살아가는데 있어서 하나님께서 나를 도와주시고 계시느냐 도와주고 계시지 않느냐 이 여부가 대단히 중요하다. 그렇다면 하나님이 누구를 도와주시냐 하는거다. 성경에 보면 하나님의 계획속에 있는 사람은 어떤 일이 있더라해도 붙들어주시고 보호해주신다는 것을 알수가 있다. 성경에 보면 그 사건과 문제 통해서 하나님이 분명히 영광 받고 계시다는것을 발견 할수가 있다.
1. 하나님의 은혜
1) 사렙다 과부 - 왕상 1:17:9, 12
오늘 성경의 말씀도 그와 같다. 32절 읽었는데 여기에 죽은 자들을 부활로 받아드리는 사람들이 있었다 라고 했다. 구약에서 죽었다가 살아난것을 체험한 사람이 두명이 있는데 그중 한명이 오늘 말씀 드린 사렙다 과부 이었다. 이 여인은 죽을수밖에 없던 상황에서 하나님께서 은혜를 베푸셔서 이 사람을 살려내시는 모습을 알수가 있다. 왕상 17:9 보면 하나님께서 엘리야에게 명령을 내리신다. “너는 일어나 시돈에 속한 사르밧으로 가서 거기 머물라 내가 그 곳 과부에게 명령하여 네게 음식을 주게 하였느니라”. 시돈 이라는 곳은 이스라엘 땅이 아닌 우상숭배하는곳 이었다. 이스라엘에 와서 바알신과 앗세라 신을 섬기게 해서 이스라엘로 하여금 망하게 만들었던 이세벨이 오랫동안 살던 나라가 시돈 이었다는것이다. 그런데 하나님께서 엘리야에게 그 나라에 가라고 하는거다. 그 나라에 과부를 준비해 놨으니 거기로 가서 살라고 하시는거다. 하나님께서 명령하시니 엘리야는 시돈땅을 찾아간다.
2) 하나님 말씀을 전달 - 왕상 1:17:13-15
그 마을에 들어가니 웬 여자가 나무를 줍고 있는것을 보았다. 엘리야가 그를 보고 하나님께서 말씀 하시던 여인이 저 사람이구나 하고 내게 물을 한잔 줄수 있겠나 말을 걸었다. 그 여인이 알겠습니다 하고 물을 뜨러 들어가는데 엘리야가 다시 한가지를 더 부탁한다. 내가 먼길을 와서 배가 고픈데 먹을 빵을 좀 달라고 했다. 그러니 그 여인이 내가 빵은 하나도 없고 빵가루가 조금 있는것으로 만들어서 먹고 내 아들과 죽으려고 하려던 참이다 라고 했다. 그러니까 이 여자가 어떤 상태냐, 죽기로 작정한 상태인거다. 이미 삶을 포기한 상태인 여자였다. 그런 사람을 찾아가서 그 집에 가서 머물라고 하나님께서 명령 하신거다. 하나님께서는 누구도 의지할데 없고 살 희망 이나 여력도 없는 불쌍한 여인을 보시고 엘리야를 보내 그를 살리게 하시려는 계획 이셨다. 여러분은 여기서 하나님의 중요하고 크신 은혜를 보셔야한다. 사르밧 과부는 이스라엘 백성도 아니었다. 하나님 섬기던 사람도 아니고 우상숭배하던 불신자 였다. 그런데 이 사람이 너무 불쌍해서 불신자 이지만 인생을 포기하려는 모습을 안타깝게 보시고 그냥 두지 않으시고 엘리야를 보내신거다. 이것을 잡으셔야 한다. 세상의 불신자이든 신자이든 누구든지 하나님은 그들을 사랑하시고 모든 사정을 알고 계시다는 사실이다. 곧 죽을것이라 하는 이야기를 들은 엘리야가 하나님께서 그래서 나를 보내셨구나 이해 하며 그렇게 복음을 전하게 된거다. 두려워말라, 너는 먼저 그 가루를 가지고 와서 빵을 만들어서 그것을 먼저 나에게 주고 거기서 나온 가루로 다시 빵을 만들어 너도 먹고 네 아들 까지 같이 먹으라고 했다. 가만 들어보면 이상한 말씀이다. 마지막 얼마 남지 않은것을 먹고 죽으려는 사람에게 먹고 힘내라 그 말이 아니라 일단 나머지 가루로 빵을 만들어 내게 달라, 그러면 하나님께서 가루를 줄테니까 그것을 가지고 네가 만들어 먹으면 된다 이렇게 말했다. 그러면서 또 하나님 말씀을 전한다. 하나님께서 뭐라 말씀하셨나, 나 여호와가 비를 이 땅에 다시 내리기 까지 너희 집에 빵가루와 기름이 결코 떨어지지 아니하게 지켜주실것이다 하고 말씀 하셨느니라 하고 말씀을 전한거다. 이 과부는 중요한 선택의 기로에 놓인거다. 이 사람 말을 듣고 만들어서 줄것이냐 아니면 그냥 우리가 먹고 죽을것이냐. 놀랍게도 이 사르밧 과부는 엘리야가 한 말을 그대로 믿기로 한다. 마지막 남은 빵가루 조금 가지고 정성껏 빵을 만들어 엘리야에게 바친다. 하나님의 말씀을 믿는 그 순간에 빵가루가 생기기 시작한거다. 왕상 17:15에, 그가 가서 엘리야의 말대로 하였더니 그와 엘리야와 그 식구가 여러날 먹었다고 나와있다. 하나님의 말씀이 그대로 성취가 된거다. 아주 중요한 메시지 이다. 불신자라고 하더라도 하나님의 말씀을 그대로 믿고 그대로 따르게 되면 그대로 하나님께서 살아서 역사 하신다는 말이다. 믿으시나. 대단히 중요한거다. 하나님 말씀이 반드시 이루어진다는 확신을 가지고 붙잡게 되면 불신자라 해도 하나님께서는 증거를 주시는거다. 불신자가 그러한데, 하물며 신자, 하나님의 자녀가 그 말씀을 믿게 되면 얼마나 큰 증거가 나오겠느냐 하는거다. 어떠한 일이 일어난다해도 전혀 걱정할 이유가 없다는거다. 말씀만 붙잡으면 되니까. 그래서 잘 먹고 지내게 된다.
2. 하나님의 구원
1) 과부에게 나타난 위기 - 왕상 17:17-18
그런데 과부에게 갑자기 문제가 생긴거다. 편안히 먹을것 걱정 없이 살수 있겠다 생각 하니 갑자기 또 문제가 생긴거다. 그런데 그 문제가 보통 문제가 아니라 아들이 병에 걸려 앓다가 죽어버린거다. 얼마나 충격 이었겠나. 유일한 가족이자 소망인 아들이 죽었으니 살 이유가 없어진거다. 그대로 엘리야에게 찾아가 원망한다. 당신이 하나님 사람 이라고 하지 않았냐, 당신이 와서 우리 아들을 죽게 하려고 온것이냐 원망했다. [c]여기서 중요한것을 붙잡으셔야한다. 하나님을 믿는데 우리에게 왜 문제가 오냐 하는 것이다. 우리가 여기서 항상 복음적으로 모든 사건을 해결 하는것이 중요하다는것을 알아야한다. 하나님 믿는 우리가 문제를 만나게 되면 하나님이 불행을 주기 위해서 그것을 주시겠느냐 이거다. 아들이 죽은 상황이다. 인간적으로 보면 어마어마한 큰 재앙이지만 결코 하나님의 뜻은 재앙과 저주가 아니라는거다. 그것은 그 여자와 그 아이를 축복하시기 위해 허락하신 일이다 라는것이다. 그 축복의 말씀을 성경에서 찾아보면, 열왕기상 17:18절에 하나님이여 당신이 나와 무슨 상관 있기로 내 죄를 생각나게 하셨느냐 하는 말씀이 나온다. 이 죄를 깨닫게 하셨다는 자체가 무엇이냐면 하나님의 은혜가 시작 되었다는거다. 이 사르밧 과부는 우상숭배하는, 바알과 아세라 신을 섬기는 사람이었던거다. 하나님을 섬기는 사람과 같이 빵가루를 먹으며 지내는데 내가 계속 우상을 섬겨도 될까 하며 자신의 죄가 떠올 랐다는거다. 깨달아지게 된것은 자기를 이제껏 붙잡고 어렵게 만들었던 죄의 사슬이 깨어졌다는거다.
2) 엘리야의 중보기도 - 왕상 17:21-22
엘리야는 그 말을 듣고 아이를 내게 달라 하고 아이를 붙잡고 그 아이를 위해 하나님께 중보기도 하기 시작한다. 열왕기상 17:21 말씀에 보면 “그 아이 위에 몸을 세 번 펴서 엎드리고 여호와께 부르짖어 이르되 내 하나님 여호와여 원하건대 이 아이의 혼으로 그의 몸에 돌아오게 하옵소서 하니” 하며 엘리야가 부르짖으며 기도하는 부분이 나온다. 놀라운 기도 아닌가, 아이가 죽었는데 선지자가 죽었던 이 아이의 혼을 다시 돌아올수있게 부르짖으며 기도한것이다. 여태까지 이렇게 기도한 선지자들이 단한명도 없었다.
3. 부활에 나타난 의미
1) 죄와 율법에서 해방 - 왕상 17:21
그런데 이 말씀이 10:22에 여호와께서 엘리야의 소리를 들으심으로 아이의 혼이 몸으로 돌아와서 살았다 라고 나와있다. 아이의 몸에서 떠났던 영혼이 기도를 통해서 아이의 몸에 다시 돌아왔다 하는거다. 상상을 초월하고 시공간 초월하는 어마어마한 부활의 역사가 일어난 상황이다. 이것이 어떻게 기도로 통해 가능했나. 여러분 문제 있으시면 기도하시기를 바란다. 엘리야는 죽은자도 살렸다. 기도하면 어떠한 문제도 문제 되지 않는다 깨달으시기 바란다. 열왕기상 17:21에 “그 아이의 몸을 세번 펴서 엎드리고 여호와께 부르짖어 이르되 내 하나님 여호와여 원하건대 이 아이의 혼으로 그의 몸에 돌아오게 하옵소서 하니," 이렇게 부르짖으며 기도 했다는거다. 그런데 중요한것은 율법에 보면 죽은자를 만진 자는 부정한 자라고 나와있다. 부정한자 라는 말은 죄인 이라는거다. 그런데 이 시체에 엘리야가 엎드렸으니 그가 죄인이라는거다. 엘리야가 그걸 모르고 엎드렸나. 율법을 너무 잘 아는 사람이다. 그것은 그 아이와 그의 생명을 위해서 그 아이를 위해 죄인이 되는것을 자처한거다. 하나님, 내 생명 을 거둬가 주세요, 내 생명을 드립니다, 죽어도 좋습니다 하면서 이 아이를 살려주세요 기도한거다. 한번이 아니라 세번을 그렇게 했다는거다. 그 기도가 응답될때까지 한거다. 드디어 하나님께서는 그 기도를 들으시고 그 아이를 살리신다.
2) 사망에서 해방 - 왕상 17:22, 눅 8:55, 23:46, 롬 8:11
이 어린아이가 살아났다는것은 부정한 자가 깨끗한 자가 된것을 의미한다. 다시 말씀드리면 엘리야가 부정한 자가 깨끗하게 죄 문제가 해결되는 축복 속에 들어간것을 나타낸거다. 그 기도와 부활을 통해 죄와 율법에서 완전히 해방받는 체험을 한거다. 예수님께서 우리 죄인을 위해서 모든 죄와 저주를 짊어지시고 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가셨다. 우리 죄를 위해서 예수님께서 생명까지 내놓으신거다. 그가 부활하셨다. 그러므로 우리도 죄에서 해방되고 부활했다는 말이다. 사망에서 해방되는 축복이 부활을 통해 나타난것이다. 22절 말씀에 보게 되면 여호와께서 엘리야의 소리를 들으심으로 그 아이의 혼이 다시 들어와서 살았다 라고 나와있다. 성경에 나타난 최초의 부활사건이다. 그런데 이것은 무엇을 의미하나. 반대로 말하면 사람은 죽어도 영혼은 절대 죽지 않는다는 증거다. 혼이 돌아왔다고 한다. 혼은 히브리 말로 네페쉬 라고 한다. 그런데 누가복음 8:50 에 보면 예수님께서 야엘의 딸을 살리실때 그 아이의 영이 다시 돌아왔다고 나와있다. 그래서 우리가 혼과 영은 다르다고 생각하는데 같이 사용 된다고 생각하면 된다. 눅 23:43에 보면 예수님께서도 돌아가시기 전에 하나님 앞에 기도하는 내용이 나온다. 아버지여 내 영혼을 아버지 손에 부탁합니다 하면서 돌아가셨다. 그것또한 역시 영혼으로 해석된다. 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 짊어지시고 돌아가셨다. 롬 8:11에 보게되면 “예수를 죽은자 가운데서 살리신 이의 영이 너희 안에 거하시면 그리스도 예수를 죽은자 가운데서 살리신 이가 너희 안에 거하시는 그의 영으로 말미암아 너희 죽을 몸도 살리시리라.” 라고 나와있다. 엘리야가 어린 아이를 살린것은 예수님께서 우리를 구하실것을 의미 하고 있는것이다.
3) 하나님 말씀의 성취 - 왕상 17:14, 24
우리가 마지막으로 잡을것이 있다. 하나님의 말씀은 반드시 성취된다는거다. 사르밧 과부에게 가서 엘리야가 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 내용이 나온다, “이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 말씀이 나 여호와가 비를 지면에 내리는 날까지 그 통의 가루가 떨어지지 아니하고 그 병의 기름이 없어지지 아니하리라 하셨느니라." 비를 지면에 내리는 날까지 너희를 지켜주신다고 한거다. 아직 비가 오지 않았는데 아이가 죽은거다. 그 아이가 죽으니 부모도 살 소망이 없어 죽으려고 하는거다. 다시 살림으로 아, 하나님께서 약속 하신것은 틀림이 없구나 하는것을 알수가 있다. 자기 아이가 산것을 보고 왕상 10:24에 보면 “여인이 엘리야에게 이르되 내가 이제야 당신은 하나님의 사람 이시오 당신 입에 있는 여호와의 말씀이 진실함을 아노라" 라고 고백한다. 기름과 빵가루가 계속 떨어지지 않고 그것을 먹었음에도 불구하고 믿음이 완전히 들어오지 않고 반신반의 하며 믿을까 말까 하는 상태였다는거다. 그런데 자기 아들이 부활 하는것을 보고 아, 정말 하나님께서 살아계시는구나 느끼게 되는거다. 오늘 꼭 붙잡으시기를 바란다. 하나님 말씀 붙잡고 기도 하면 반드시 성취된다는거다. 왜 그렇나. 하나님은 지금도 살아계시는 하나님이시다. 지금 우리가 생각하고 마음 먹은 모든것 우리의 모든 사정을 다 알고 계신다. 그러므로 말씀잡고 우리가 기도할때 반드시 당신이 살아계신 증거를 주실줄을 믿는다. 이 응답 받으시는 여러분 되기를 바란다. 말씀을 마치겠다.
결론 - 약 5:17-18
약 5:17-18, 꼭 잡으시기를 바란다. 17 “엘리야는 우리와 성정이 같은 사람이로되 그가 비가 오지 않기를 간절히 기도한즉 삼년 육개월동안 땅에 비가 오지 아니하고 18 다시 기도하니 하늘이 비를 주고 땅이 열매를 맺었느니라.” 오늘 기도해서 죽었던 아이를 살려낸 엘리야이다. 오늘 말씀 보니 그가 기도하니까 3여년 동안 비가 오지 않았다. 다시 기도하니 또 비가 다시 오기 시작했다. 그 사람은 아마 특별한 사람이니까 그렇게 되었겠지 우리가 생각할것이다. 그러나 성경에서 말씀하고있다. “엘리야는 우리와 성정이 똑같은 사람이었다” 고 이야기 한다. 그 말인즉슨 우리도 똑같이 믿음을 가지고 이야기 하면 이런 기적은 똑같이 반드시 일어난다 라는거다. 엘리야때 계셨던 그 하나님이 똑같이 지금도 살아계시고 우리와 함께 계신다. 그 응답 받는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 이 한주간에 어떤 일이 생길지 모른다 그러나 이 언약 잡으면 하나님께서 해결해 주시기 시작 하실것이다. 승리 하시기를 바란다.
The Widow in Zarephath Who Witnessed Resurrection (Hebrews 11:35)

“Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.”
Introduction
Last week, we saw the news that there was a huge tornado in Kansas and many people were killed. I saw this in the news that there was a lot of mortality. Some people were thrown into the air inside the tornado and thrown meters across, and were killed that way. Due to the tornado, it caused many problems. In the news, the reporters, scientists, and meteorologists predicted that many more climate disasters will arise in the future. I think the fact that we are alive is a miracle. When I saw this in the news, I saw that if God doesn’t protect us, then we can face problems and hardships at any time. Throughout the world, there are many natural disasters, wars, and diseases spreading and occurring. When I look at this spiritually, I see that through these events, God is wanting to relay us a message. Through this crisis and disaster, I realized that it is very important to listen to God’s voice. Through these disasters and events, we need to hold onto the fact that God is wanting to relay us a message. When we look at the world, people are dying so quickly and easily but if God protects us, no matter what hardships and danger comes to us, God will protect us. What is important is that when we live our lives, we need to ask ourselves, “Is God helping us or not?” That is important. Then who does God help? When you look at the Bible, when you are within God’s plan, it shows that God will protect you no matter whatever happens to you. When you look at the Bible throughout events of crisis and incidents, God received glory through them because we were within God’s plan. When you look at the Biblical scripture today, that is what it explains. There were people who were resurrected in today’s scripture. In the Old Testament, there were some people who experienced resurrection and there were two people, and one of the people was explained in today’s scripture.
1. God's Grace
1) The widow in Zarephath
Zarephath was a woman who was in a situation where she had no choice but to face death but she received God’s grace and was able to experience the work of resurrection.
1 Kings 17:9, 12 “ 'Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.' 12 So she said, 'As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.' ” - God gave Elijah a command. Sidon was not a land of Israel but it was a land of idolatry. They were worshiping idols and caused Israelites to experience destruction. But God commanded Elijah to go to Sidon and to save the widow, Zarephath. Since God commanded this, Elijah went to Sidon. But there was a woman who appeared before him who was picking up sticks and branches in Sidon and knew that this was the woman that God commanded him to meet. So, he asked her to bring him some water and when he asked her that, she agreed and Elijah requested another thing. Elijah requested Zarephath to give him food since he came from a long journey. But the widow, Zarephath replied that she had no bread left and was making the last bit of bread she had left right now, and was making that bread to give her to son. Zarephath was in a state where she was about to die due to starvation and she was about to give up on life but God commanded Elijah to meet this woman who was basically a beggar. But for God, He saw the pitiful woman who had no money and food and sent Elijah to meet her. From here, we can see God’s great grace. Zarephath was not even an Israelite and she was someone who was also a nonbeliever who worshiped idols. But God saw her as so pitiful and someone who was about to give up on life, and commanded Elijah to go to Sidon to save this woman. This is what we must hold onto. Even if you are nonbeliever or believer, God loves you so much and God wants to help you, and knows what you are going through in life. Elijah, who saw this woman who was about to die, understood why God sent him to Sidon to meet this woman.
2) Receiving God's Word
1 Kings 17:13-15 “And Elijah said to her, 'Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son.' 14 For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ 15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days.” - It was strange what Elijah said. Elijah did not just encourage and comfort Zarephath but commanded her to give all of the bread she had left to him and promised her that God will give her more flour to make more bread.
Then Elijah gave her God’s word of 1 Kings 17:14 - This was an important time of decision for the widow because she needed to decide if she wanted to give all of the bread to Elijah or to her son. This was astounding because Zarephath believed in the promise of God that Elijah told her. All of the remaining flour and bread that she had, she gave it all to Elijah. The moment she believed in God’s word, more bread and flour ended up coming to her and household.
1 Kings 17:15 - God’s word was fulfilled in Zarephath’s life. This is an important message. Even if you are a nonbeliever, the moment you believe and obey God’s word, then God’s word will be fulfilled. Do you believe in this? This is very important. If we hold onto the fact that God’s word will be fulfilled, even if you have unbelief or is a nonbeliever, then God’s word will be fulfilled. If a nonbeliever believes like this, then what would happen if a believer believed and obeyed God’s word? No matter what happens, there is no need for you to worry or fear as well as no need for you to be disappointed. That is why Zarephath was able to eat until she was full. But what happened? A problem arose.
2. God's Salvation
1) The crisis of the widow
1 Kings 17:17-18 “Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. And his sickness was so serious that there was no breath left in him. 18 So she said to Elijah, 'What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?' ” - Zarephath thought that she had all of the food that she needed but a crisis occurred. Her son ended up passing away. For this widow, it was such a shock. Her one and only son ended up passing away so there was no reason for her to live anymore. Elijah comes and comforts her but Zarephath grumbles and complains to Elijah. Zarephath was complaining to Elijah and saying that he came to her with the promise of God’s word but her son needed dying. This is something that we must see here. We are children of God but we ask why we still have problems or problems keep coming to us. We need to see all things in the eyes of the gospel. When a problem comes to us, do you think God gives you problems to torment you? Zarephath’s son died and when you look at it in a worldly perspective, God didn’t kill her son to give Zarephath suffering or a crisis in her life. But through this incident, God gave this crisis to bless Zarephath and her son.
To give her this blessing, it is written in 1 Kings 17:18 - To realize sin and realize you are sinning means that God’s grace has started to pour upon you. For Zarephath and her son, they were idol worshippers, and she realized that she was worshiping idols while Elijah was a believer of God. When Zarephath realized her sin, all of her curses was being broken apart at that moment. When Elijah heard this, he commanded Zarephath to give him her dead son. At that time, Elijah started praying for Zarephath’s son to God.
2) Elijah's intercessory prayer
1 Kings 17:21-22 “And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, 'O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.' 22 Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.” - Elijah started calling out to God and asked God to bring the soul back to the son of Zarephath. This was an astounding prayer. This child was dead but he was begging and pleading to God to bring his soul back to the dead child’s body. There were no prophets in the Bible who prayed like this.
But something amazing happened in 1 Kings 17:22 - Through Elijah’s prayer, the soul was returned back to the dead child. Something that we couldn’t imagine, and the work of transcending time and space took place. This all happened through prayer. Do you have a problem? Pray. Elijah was able to bring a dead person back to life. When you pray, no matter what problems you have, it is not a problem. Hold onto this message. Then, the meaning of resurrection is important.
3. The Meaning Behind the Resurrection
1) Deliverance from sin and the law
1 Kings 17:21 - How did Elijah call out to God? He stretched over the child three times and prayed out to God. He covered the entire body of the child and cried out to God to save this child from death. The important thing is when you look at the law, it is written that you shouldn’t touch a dead corpse and if you touch a dead corpse, you would be committing a sin and was considered a sin. So this means that sin was coming upon Elijah. Do you think Elijah was not aware of this? Elijah understood the law very well. This means that for this child, for the sake of life, Elijah was becoming the sacrifice for this child. In other words, Elijah was asking God to take his life on the behalf of this child. He didn’t do this once but did this three times. He did this until he received an answer from God. When God heard this, He heard Elijah’s prayer and answered him, and resurrected the child. The fact that this child was saved, this means that as a sinner, as an unclean person, he became cleansed. In other words, an unclean person became saved and forgiven of sin through Elijah’s act. Through this resurrection, this child was completely freed from sin and curses. Jesus Christ took all of our sins and died on the cross for us. For our sins, Jesus Christ gave up His life. Jesus Christ was resurrected and through this, this means that we have been saved from our sins and curses. Through resurrection, it also means that we have been delivered from death.
2) Deliverance from death
1 Kings 17:22 - This was the first act of resurrection that took place in the Bible. What does this show? Even if a person dies, their souls never die. This said that the soul returned, in Hebrew, soul is “Nephesh.”
Luke 8:55, 23:46 “Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, 'Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ Having said this, He breathed His last. ” - When Jesus saved Jairus’ daughter and resurrected her back to life, it was written that her spirit returned. Soul and spirit in the Bible means the same thing.
Luke 23:46 - When Jesus was dying, He was praying to God. Here it says, “Spirit.” When Jesus Christ died, He took all our sins and died on the cross.
Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” - Elijah saving this child was foreshadowing Jesus Christ saving our souls when He died on the cross. We must hold onto that God’s word will absolutely be fulfilled.
3) Fulfillment of God's Word
1 Kings 17:14*, 24 “Then the woman said to Elijah, 'Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.' ” - We can see that the word of God was fulfilled to Zarephath. It wasn’t raining but the child died. Since the child died, there was no reason for Zarephath to continue to live so she wanted to die. But God resurrected her child so she understood that God will protect and keep His word, and God’s word will be fulfilled.
1 Kings 17:24 - Even though she ate to her full, her child ended up dead but when her dead child returned back to life, Zarephath was able to realize that God’s word was the truth. She understood and was able to believe that God is alive. Hold onto this today. Hold onto God’s word and pray, then God’s word will absolutely be fulfilled. Why is that? God is still alive today. Just thinking and sitting here, God knows everything. He knows all of our thoughts as we are sitting here. When we hold onto God’s word and pray, then God will show His absolute evidence in your life. May you become people who receive answers.
Conclusion
Hold onto James 5:17-18 “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.” - Elijah prayed and he was able to resurrect a dead child. When he prayed for no rain, there was no rain for three years and 6 months but when he prayed again for rain, rain started again. When you read this, you may think that Elijah is a special person but the Bible said that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours. This means that we have the same faith as Elijah, then this means that we will receive the same answers and works in our lives. The same God that worked in Elijah’s life is with us and is working in our lives. May you receive answers. Throughout this week, I am not sure what will happen but if you hold onto God’s word, then answers will absolutely come to your life. May you be victorious.
